COLUMN.........................Lizzie EnfieldNotes from North Village‘It’s not a party, it’s a gathering’ is the familiarmantra of teenage children, planning to invite‘a few friends’ over, when you’re out, or away,despite explicit instructions that they are notto have a party because you have: just had thehouse redecorated; just finished fixing all thethings that were broken the last time they had aparty; still not been forgiven by the neighbourwhose pampas grass caught fire or the one whomay or may not have called the police or theone who found drugs in their recycling boxthe next day, or the one who was kept awakethe night before they were due to have heartsurgery.Disclaimer: not all of the above incidentsrelate to my own children but they are all realincidents and all broadly representative of thekind of thing that happens when teenagersdecide to have a party – or gathering as they’vetaken to euphemistically, trying-to-pullthe-wool-over-your-eyes-ily,calling comingtogethers of significant numbers of friends.The definition of a gathering appears to be ameeting involving numbers which are morethan two and less than absolutely everyonethey know – in reality and virtually – whichleaves plenty of scope for fairly multitudinousevents by any name.I know this because my daughter explainedthat for a recent reasonably significantbirthday she didn’t want a ‘party’ becauseshe would have to invite all the friends whoknow all the friends who know all the friendsthat know all her friends. So, she was justgoing to have a gathering and limit it to heractual friends which seemed to mean about70 people.“In my book that’s a party.”“Yes but old people think a few friends and afew bits of food is a party.”“That’s a dinner party,” I agreed.“Strictly speaking, it’s a dinner gathering,”corrected my son, less of a party person butdefinitely one for a gathering.I recently found myself with said two childrenon a very tough journalistic assignmentreviewing the utterly magnificent hotel/restaurant/entertainments venue that is theAssembly House in Norwich.After a weekend spent mooching around thecity and relaxing in the Georgian splendourof its surroundings, we got to chatting aboutits origins.At the same time, we checked out theafternoon tea, a sumptuous triple-tieredsandwich, scone, and cake and pastry affair inthe heritage-hued crystal-chandeliered GrandHall. Tea at the Assembly House is a big thingin Norwich. They do up to 1000 a day andwhat with the play, wedding party and babyshower going on elsewhere in the building, itwas buzzing.So when I began to bore them with theorigins of the building: “It was where theGeorgian gentry used to gather for drinkingand dancing” I saw the complicit look theygave each other as they looked around, thenumber calculations going on in their headsas they noodled towards the assembled hordesand mouthed “a gathering…”Illustration by Joda (@joda_art)....41....
