INSIDE LEFT: GOLDSTONE LANE, DECEMBER 1911.......................................................................................Until the late 1950s a full round of footballfixtures was played on Christmas Day, and in thisphoto, taken by Thomas Wiles, we can see thecrowds flooding down Goldstone Lane after thematch between Brighton and Hove Albion andNorthampton Town, at the Goldstone Ground inHove, on December 25th, 1911.There is no record of how big the attendanceswere in those days, but you can see from thecrowded nature of the street that there must havebeen at least a few thousand. The Albion movedto the Goldstone in 1902, and soon built a newstand capable of seating 1,800 fans behind thesouth goal, to complement the open-air woodenseating opposite, and the ramshackle West Stand, which remained in place till 1958. Most of thespectators stood on mud banks on the east sideof the ground – the ‘chicken run’ - behind picketfences. There was a pond behind the north goal, into which all the rainwater from the Old ShorehamRoad used to drain. It’s interesting to see the well-dressed nature ofthe crowd, with a smattering of (middle-class)bowler hats among the flat caps favoured byworking men. Then, as now, it’s mostly grownmen in attendance, though two women are prominent, one of whom is leading two small childrenby the hand. I wonder how many are going backto a turkey supper. In those days Brighton were playing in the SouthernLeague First Division, in effect the third tierof the footballing pyramid. They were enjoying agood season, and eventually finished a creditablefifth out of 20. The crowd will be happy, becausethe Albion, according to the Dec 29th, 1911edition of the Sussex Express, ‘won by two goalsto one, Goodwin and Smith scoring, the latterfrom a penalty’. It was customary to play the sameopposition on Boxing Day, and the Albion playershad to travel all the way up to Northampton onthe 26th, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat. The Albion played their football at the GoldstoneGround until 1997 when, shamefully, it was soldoff by majority shareholder, Bill Archer. It wasdemolished and an ugly retail park was built inits place. It wasn’t until 2011/12 that the clubregained a permanent home at the splendid AmexStadium in Falmer.
