LF woman creates pop-up business in Market Square
Peter Kaspari, Editor
A Lake Forest woman
has created a pop-up store
in Market Square, with the
ultimate goal of helping
female fashion designers
go global with their products.
Karen Anderson recently
launched the U.S. arm
of the global jewelry brand
Caprice Decadent, which
she is calling Caprice Decadent
U.S.
Through Dec. 14, Anderson
has a pop-up store
in Market Square.
She said her business is
focused on helping women
fashion designers penetrate
the U.S. market so
they can help build their
brands.
Right now she’s working
with a Norwegian
jewelry designer who uses
a family of artisans in
Greece to hand-make all
of the designs.
“The designer has been
a student of art history, art
colors, for decades,” Anderson
said. “It’s been a
big passion of hers.”
The jewelry features “a
lot of art deco influence.
You see a lot of Greek
history, the Ottoman era,
strong female characters in
history. All of these things
contribute to the look of
her jewelry.”
Anderson has a background
in corporate strategy,
with a recent focus on
national strategy.
She took a few years off
to raise her children, and
now that they’re older,
she wanted to get back to
work. Initially she wasn’t
sure what she wanted to
do, but she was interested
in strategy.
It was a meeting at Authentico
in Lake Forest
with a neighbor that made
Anderson realize what she
wanted to do.
Her neighbor was from
Oslo, Norway, and knew
that the designer was interested
in bringing their
products to the states.
After doing research
into Caprice Decadent,
Anderson said she felt
this was the perfect opportunity
for her. She also
spoke with the designer in
Greece, who was also excited
about the opportunity
to expand to the U.S.
“I love it. Absolutely
love it,” Anderson said.
“It’s been about nine
months since I’ve done it.”
The first six months were
mainly focused on getting
THE GLENVIEW LANTERN
Glenview man dies from
self-inflicted gunshot
during standoff with police
A Glenview resident
shot and killed himself
during a five-hour standoff
with local and regional
police, according to the
Glenview Police Department.
Glenview police responded
to an apartment
building in the 4100 block
of Cove Lane around 8:30
p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, after
a resident in the building
said a neighbor pointed a
handgun at them in a stairwell,
according to the department.
the brand to wholesalers.
According to Anderson,
Caprice Decadent U.S.
is now available in select
boutiques in Florida, New
York and Massachusetts.
She even has a showroom
in her Lake Forest
home for private shoppers.
“But having this popup
in Market Square was
the initiative to start in the
local community and Chicago
as a whole,” she said.
“Letting people know that
Caprice Decadent U.S.,
the jewelry, is here. This is
what it looks like.”
The pop-up has given
her the chance to talk to
people about Caprice Decadent
U.S. and the story
behind it.
And she’s already got
plans for expansion, both
within the U.S. and internationally.
Anderson
hopes to expand out west,
and has been exploring
possibly starting up in the
South.
A friend of hers who
lives in London has also
expressed interest in
bringing the jewelry to
the United Kingdom, and
a former Lake Forest resident
Anderson knows who
now lives in Switzerland
plans on bringing Caprice
Decadent to that country
as well.
Anderson said she wanted
to focus on promoting
women largely due to her
Police evacuated and
secured the building while
trying to contact Stephano
Woo, 40, in his apartment,
said Glenview police Sgt.
Jim Foley. After receiving
no answer, police requested
support from the Northern
Illinois Police Alarm
System, a multijurisdictional
task force trained
with special weapons and
tactics, Foley said.
More than five hours
after the initial report, NI-
PAS officers entered the
building and found Woo
dead in his apartment, according
to police. He was
pronounced dead at 2:30
a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4,
by the Cook County Medical
Examiner’s Office,
which ruled his death a
suicide from a self-inflicted
gunshot wound to the
head.
The task force also discovered
three handguns,
two rifles and 2,100 rounds
of ammunition in Woo’s
apartment, where he lived
alone. All of the weapons
were legally owned, and
Woo had no prior criminal
record, according to
police.
No other residents or officers
were injured, Foley
said.
