Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Truman Thuente
Thuente is a junior on
the Lake Forest wrestling
team.
How did you get
started wrestling?
My dad wrestled in high
school for Highland Park.
I figured I may as well try
it out, I started wrestling at
Deer Path Middle School
when I was in fifth grade.
What’s your favorite
part of wrestling?
It’s the intensity, it’s an
individual sport and it’s
a team sport at the same
time. I like that we can go
in there and just beat each
other up for three hours
every day and still come
out as friends.
What’s the most
challenging part of
wrestling?
It’s the same stuff, you
get beat up by your teammates
for three hours everyday.
Making weight
too, making weight is always
an issue. We work
really hard, it’s not for everybody.
What’s the best
coaching advice you’ve
ever gotten?
I use to wrestle for Mike
Poeta at Poeta Training
Center. One day I came
to him because I felt like
I wasn’t seeing any progress.
He told me that when
you boil pasta, you don’t
really notice it’s boiling
until the water is going
over the sides. You just
got to wait and keep doing
what you’re doing, and
then it will all overflow.
Do you have any
pre-game rituals or
superstitions?
Normally when I walk
out on the mat, I stomp my
left foot twice, my right
foot twice, I’ll run over to
the side, I’ll touch the mat
and then make a cross on
my chest.
If you could play
another sport besides
wrestling, what would
it be?
Jujutsu has always been
interesting. I like combat
sports, it appeals to me.
What’s your favorite
place to eat?
Poeta’s Food Market in

Highwood. I’ve worked
there for a long time, I love
the food there.
Who is your favorite
athlete?
I’m going to have to go
with [former NFL linebacker]
Ray Lewis. The
guy is a complete animal,
he works hard all day and
it worked out for him.
Who is the class clown
of the wrestling team?
Jade Khater 100 percent.
The first person to pop into
my head, he’s a funny kid.
If you won the lottery,
what’s the first thing
you would buy?
It’d be a 1972 Chevrolet
K20. It’s an old pickup
truck, I think it’s pretty
sweet.

the game, Summerville
converted a traditional
3-point play, then Trkla
made a tough basket from
the post. A free throw
from Molly Fisher and
two more from Trkla extended
the Scouts lead to
60-56 with 1:18 left.
The Wildcats were
forced to then play the
foul game, and free
throws from Douglass and
First Quarter

Summerville sealed the
victory.
It was the first true test
for the Scouts, who have
state title aspirations after
reaching the Class 4A super-sectional
last season.
Coming away victorious
in this conference battle
should bring a big boost
to the team’s confidence
and morale.
“We hadn’t really faced
any adversity this far in a
tight environment,” Wilhelm
said. “To get exposure
to that is good, hopefully
this propels us going
forward.”
