4 Local Life
My friends and family will laugh at this, but
I’m a big believer in using the New Year
as a natural point to self-improvement.
I’m happy to admit that the oft used ‘New Year, New
You’ mantra, so loved by the print media as a way of
filling up space in January issues, wholly resonates
with me.
No-one is perfect, we can all improve one aspect or
another of our lives, so why should we let the hardbitten
pessimists pour cold water on our desire to
better ourselves? So whether your aim this year is
to lose weight and look better, stop smoking, be
kinder to others less fortunate than ourselves, to
get fit or any other resolution you may pursue, I
wish you the best of luck in your endeavours.
If you haven’t yet nailed down any firm
commitments on your to-do list, there is plenty
in this magazine to inspire you. Just focus on one
thing at a time and don’t beat yourself up if you slip.
All the very best wishes for 2020,
Chris Pearce, Publisher
Winstanley’s Sporting Success
It’s been a busy yet successful few weeks for
Winstanley College’s sports teams competing in the
AOC Sport Regionals.
Women’s Volleyball won their regional competition
with a strongly fought, high quality contest,
defeating a talented Xaverian College side 2
sets to 1. They are now through to the National
Championships.
College Sport Enrichment Officer, Ben Rutherford,
said: ‘Each and every student has done superbly
well. The girls (in Volleyball) did fantastically,
especially considering they lost to Xaverian in the
group stage. They showed great character and
played some outstanding volleyball in the final. It
was a pleasure to watch and I can't wait to see how
they get on in Nottingham for the Nationals.’
Threads of History
Billinge-born visual artist
Stephanie Fry is investigating
the better-kept secrets of the
village in her latest community
art project.
Though Stephanie moved to
Caernarfon in North Wales in
her childhood, Billinge remained
close to her heart; this was where
she spent the holidays with her
grandfather, reminiscing about
days gone by. It was perhaps
one of these conversations that
inspired Stephanie’s latest venture: specifically, a
passing mention of the old cinema on Main Street.
Affectionately referred to by locals as the ‘Tin Can’,
the cinema was a touchstone of the community
between the 1920s and 1960s, and was located
where Billinge Library stands today. When a cricket
match was played next door, the sound of the ball
bouncing onto the corrugated iron walls of the
cinema building could be heard over whatever film
was playing!
Delving into these secrets inspired Stephanie to
search for more around the village – and it didn’t
disappoint. Atop Billinge Hill lies an abandoned
underground bunker harking back to the Cold War.
Constructed in the 1960s, the bunker is 9-feet deep
and was in continuous use for seven years, when
the threat of a nuclear war loomed. A network of
1563 similar sites existed across the UK, operated by
the Royal Observer Corps, and would have aimed to
warn the UK military and civilian authorities of an
impending attack. The Billinge site closed in 1968,
but parts of the surface structure can still be seen
today.
photo: Gary Rodgers on Geograph
Now Stephanie is looking for any more information
and anecdotes about either of the two sites to
assist in her project. If you have direct experience
of working for the ROC, or if you visited Billinge
Cinema in its heyday, she wants to hear from you!
She can be contacted at s.a.fry@hotmail.co.uk
An exhibition of ‘Billinge: Threads of History’ will
take place at Billinge Library from March 12th for
two weeks, comprised of a reconstructed bunker
room, paintings, collages, photographs and an
audio-visual look at the landscape of Billinge Hill
and its Cold War heritage.

Pupils from Roby Mill Primary School have created
a memorial flame to commemorate the 75th
anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
More than 300 groups nationwide registered to
take part in a competition to create a flame, with
selected artworks featuring as part of a national
exhibition displayed in London. 75 were chosen in
total, one to represent each year since the camp’s
liberation, and an unveiling ceremony will take
place on Holocaust Memorial Day (January 27th).
Head of School Nicola Grand said: ‘As part of our
topic on war, we learnt about the Holocaust and the
events of WWII. Our children were shocked at the
treatment of people and felt strongly about being
involved in the Memorial Day.’
‘Our ‘Flame of Hope’ includes quotes from Anne
Frank’s diary and buttons to create a mosaic effect,’
she continued. ‘The children were overjoyed when
they were told that their work will be part of the
Artwork Awarded
national exhibition in London.’
Judging panellists for the competition included
Sarah Donaldson, arts editor at The Observer;
Nick Sharratt, renowned illustrator; and Kathleen
Soriano, Chair of the Liverpool Biennial.
Planning Ahead
What image does the word ‘funeral’ conjure up for
you? A fleet of sleek, black limousines, a horse-drawn
carriage and mourners grouped around a marble
headstone? Or do you simply see friends and relatives
gathered together in a woodland spot, scattering
ashes from an urn?
While it’s easy to focus on the emotional and
ceremonial aspects of a funeral, we don’t always
think about the costs. According to the Money
Advice Service, the average price of a funeral,
even without optional items such as flowers and
catering, is around £4,300.
That’s not exactly small change for most people,
and it’s an unfortunate fact that if you don’t make
some kind of financial provision for your funeral,
your children or close relatives may have to foot the
bill when you die. Not only does this put financial
pressure on your nearest and dearest at a difficult
time, it can also mean that the final send-off you
receive doesn’t match up to the one you had
envisaged.
You can leave instructions in your will as to the type
of funeral you would like, but
if there isn’t enough in your
estate to fund your wishes,
those left in charge of the
arrangements are under no
legal obligation to carry them
out, or even arrange a funeral
at all.
a more natural option, but that also costs between
a few hundred to several thousands of pounds,
depending upon location. Cremation is cheaper,
costing from £1,400 without a ceremony and
approximately £3,750 when a funeral is arranged.
If you don’t believe there will be enough money
in your estate to pay for a funeral when you die,
and your relatives can’t afford to chip in, there are
several options open to you.
Sign up to a prepaid funeral plan
With a prepaid plan, you will choose the type of
funeral you want (so long as it’s in the UK) then
pay the funeral director or plan provider either in
a lump sum, or in weekly instalments. The costs will
be frozen at today’s prices from the moment the
plan takes effect, which means the costs won’t be
subject to inflation, but you should be aware that
your plan may not provide everything you want –
for instance, it may not cover the cost of a burial
plot, flowers or catering. It’s advisable to check the
details of your plan carefully before you agree to
buy it.
If you choose a church burial
you could pay anything from
£800 (as a resident of a small,
rural community) to £8,000 if
you are a non-resident asking
to be buried in a city area. Your
relatives will also need to pay
ongoing maintenance fees for
the grave. A woodland burial is

19
Over 50s plans
Although this is a form of insurance, there’s no
requirement for medical underwriting. That means
if you are in poor health at the time of drawing up
the plan it won’t affect the payout, provided you
survive beyond the first two years of the plan’s start
date. On the down side, once you’ve paid the money
in, you won’t get it back and you risk losing all your
money – including any costs towards your funeral –
if you don’t keep up to date with payments.
Life Insurance
According to the consumer association Which?, life
insurance could potentially pay out 40% more than
an Over 50s plan. However the lump sum provided
by life insurance can take several weeks to come
through. The Association of British Insurers says
that payments generally take about a month to
arrive after a death, but they can take longer if the
death needs investigation.
Government-funded funeral payments
If the person responsible for arranging your funeral
is receiving certain benefits, they can apply to the
government for a Funeral Expenses Payment. The
money offered will cover things such as cremation
fees or the cost of a particular burial plot, death
certificates and other documents, but it is unlikely
to cover the full cost of a funeral.
Save up with a bank account
You can always set up a separate bank account to
pay for your funeral, paying in gradually to build
up the amount you need. However that’s not risk
free, as there’s a chance you might die before you
have accumulated your target sum. At your death,
the money you’ve saved will be considered part
of your estate, which means it won’t be released
immediately to pay for your funeral costs.
If you’ve been concerned about how you will
pay for your funeral, the five options listed above
should provide some comfort. Fortunately there’s
lots more advice available from organisations such
as the Money Advice Service and Citizens Advice.
Finally, it always helps to discuss your plans with
your family or close friends, as any arrangements
made now could save them a lot of worry in future.
There are loads of ways to plan ahead in your
financial life in 2020. If you’re pre-planning a
funeral, why not tackle these ‘big picture’ jobs while
you’re at it?
Check your state pension forecast
Checking how much state pension you might
receive provides a clearer picture of how your
financial situation could look in retirement. It also
allows you to see if there are any gaps in your
National Insurance record.
This is important, as you might be eligible to pay
voluntary NI contributions to fill those gaps and
complete your NI record before you retire. You need
to make full contributions for 35 years to be eligible
for the new state pension, so it’s definitely worth
investigating.
You should factor in the figure from your state
pension forecast with any occupational pensions,
savings or investments you hold. You’ll discover
whether you’re on track for the lifestyle you want,
or if you need to put some more money away prior
to retirement.
Make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)
A Lasting Power of Attorney is an official document
whereby you appoint one or more attorneys to
help you make financial or health-related decisions,
or to make them on your behalf if you lose mental
capacity in the future.
You need to be over the age of 18 to make an LPA,
and have the mental capacity at the time to make
your own decisions. It costs £82 to register an LPA
unless you’re eligible for a reduction or exemption,
and you can make a new one at any time.
Drawing up a Lasting Power of Attorney is often
regarded as unnecessary until later life, but it’s well
worth considering at any time – after all, you never
know what’s around the corner. It’s possible to make
a Lasting Power of Attorney without professional
assistance via the gov.uk website. Citizens Advice
may also be able to help, but if you’re unsure of
your wishes or the process in general it’s advisable
to seek help from a solicitor.
21
Write a will
Making a will ensures your assets are passed down
according to your wishes when you die, and with
today’s complex family structures it can prevent a
great deal of stress for those left behind.
These assets should be weighed up against any
debts owed, including mortgages, bank overdrafts,
credit card balances and loans.
It’s advisable to seek professional assistance when
making a will, particularly if you have a young
family or your circumstances aren’t straightforward.
You might need to consider who would care for
your children if you weren’t around, for example, or
think about how you’d incorporate children from a
previous marriage into your will.
It’s worth knowing that March is free wills month,
when you might be able to save on legal costs if
you make a will during March. This is usually only
applicable to simple wills, however, where the
instructions are relatively straightforward.
Take out ‘life event’ insurance
Adverse life events such as chronic illness or a
serious accident can derail your plans for the future.
You may not be able to work or function in the way
you used to, for instance, but if you’ve taken out
appropriate insurance it can reduce some of the
financial impact for yourself and your family.
Critical illness and life insurance cover provides
a financial buffer that can help you cope with
unexpected life circumstances, and help your loved
ones adjust to a new situation without the fear of
financial difficulty.
It’s important to find out more about the insurance
policies available and choose the best one for you.
Football for Everyone
Rainford Rangers FC host regular inclusive football
sessions for any players with a disability - and
they’re looking for new players to get involved.
The sessions were set up as a way for the community
football club to expand its presence in the local area
and to provide a space for people to play sports
who might not otherwise have had the chance
to. Organiser Andrew Castle says it’s important for
the club to be able to support families and their
children with disabilities, and is intending to keep
sessions free for as long as possible.
Rainford Rangers JFC were recognised by the
Liverpool FA in September 2019, receiving a
Football Service Award for Disability Project of the
Year at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Act Now for a
2020 Sale
You might be under the impression that the UK
housing market is quiet in January and February, as
prospective house buyers stay home under the duvet
and don’t venture out into the cold to search for their
dream home.
Back in those pre-internet days, you’d be spot on,
the housing market used to start moving when
spring started but times have changed. While most
of us are still recovering from the lingering excesses
of the festive season though, many people have
used the festive holidays to make plans to move
this year.
And thanks to the internet, you can do all this whilst
keeping warm under the duvet.
According to the UK’s leading property portal Right
Move, the period between Boxing Day and New
Year’s Eve will see a huge surge in the amount of
people visiting their site and these high numbers
continue into the New Year. In fact, Rightmove have
stated that eight out of the top ten busiest days in
2019 were in January and February, and there is no
reason to think that this trend won’t be repeated in
2020.
So, what drives prospective house buyers to think
about the changes they want to make at this time
of year?
Relationships
Some have just spent an entire fortnight with their
partner, and quite frankly, can’t face spending
another Christmas with them. First thing on this to-
do list (after contacting the solicitor) is to search for
a new home.
Family
Spending time with all the family at Christmas,
it’s apparent that they need a bigger home for a
growing family, or a smaller one now that the kids
have flown the nest. Other prospective buyers
enjoyed time with family over Christmas and have
realised how much they miss them and want to
move to be nearer to loved ones.
FOMO
Christmas is a time when people visit friends and
families, making those inevitable comparisons.
That FOMO feeling sets in when their current home
doesn’t quite match up to lifestyle standards set by
others.
So, if you want to sell your home this year then
don’t wait until spring. It is now that serious buyers
enter the market. It is now that the people most
motivated to change where they live actually get
moving and start looking with serious intent.
readers of our Local Life Magazine a Very Happy
New Year.
We bring you the latest trends in
the UK’s housing market, with a
detailed focus on Wigan.
House prices
At £234,370 property prices across the UK in
September are just £3,000 (1.3%) higher than
a year ago. Month on month, property prices
remained static or fell marginally in all regions
except the South East.
Economy
Base rates were held at 0.75% in November
although two members of the committee
voted for a decrease which is the first split
vote since June 2018. The latest report has
raised the possibility that rates could be cut in
coming months if Brexit uncertainty persists.
Transactions
The HMRC report sales levels in October
were 4.3% higher than a year ago, and at
their highest monthly level since March 2017.
However, in recent months sales volumes
have been revised downwards in subsequent
data revisions. Sales in September are now
reported to be lower than a year ago.

Orrell’s youngest
entrepreneur
A Winstanley College student from Orrell has been
successful in launching her own business.
16-year-old Thea Hardman launched Thea’s Gifts of
Love in November last year, and has since attracted
orders from as far as Doncaster and Birmingham!
Her enterprise, which offers a vast range of gifts and
decorations for around the home, was inspired by
her mum’s love of gift-giving.
‘We loved just seeing the smiles on people’s faces,’
Thea says. ‘And one day I just thought “I could do
this as a business!” We started looking for suppliers
and began ordering from a few small sources to
perform quality checks.’
‘I did think at first “can I really do this, can I start a
business?” Everything happened really fast from
having the idea to the launch around two weeks
later,’ she continues.
Of course, the venture hasn’t been
with running the business in her spare
website, packaging and sending out
she’s determined to make it a success,
and with customers already flocking
to her website, the future is looking
Cosy up your
Home
Spring may still be a while off, but there are ways to
make your interior more inviting, even in the midst of
winter.
Make long, dark nights and chilly mornings more
bearable with some clever thinking. To start,
make sure your lighting is up to scratch. A welldesigned
lighting scheme reinforces a sense of
security, comfort and vitality, and making dramatic
improvements could be as simple as adding a floor
lamp in a dark corner or a reading lamp next to a
favourite armchair. For the best effect, layer lighting
so that it comes from a variety of sources and
directions. If on a budget, replace main light switches
with dimmers, and plug in a selection of table or
floor lamps at strategic points. Check that your bulbs
give off the correct amount of illumination for the
task at hand, and where appropriate are a ‘warm’
white in colour rather than ‘cool’. Add the leaping
flames of a log burner or a few pretty tea lights or
candles for an atmospheric evening in.
Colour can make all the difference to a room’s feel,
and a quick paint job – perhaps just on one wall –
can be transformative. Earthy or spicy colours such
as claret, mustard, ochre or chocolate are great
choices, while navy or dark grey are more neutral
and perhaps easier to live with all year round.
Don’t be afraid of trying darker shades – not only
are they very on-trend, but they are really effective
at creating a feeling of cocooning comfort. Think
about the other main colours and textures in each
room. For warmth underfoot use a deep pile rug or
two to add extra softness, and consider swapping
sheer, pale, lightweight curtains or blinds for
something heavier and in a bolder shade – think
wool, tweed, velvet, even felt, denim or mohair.
In the bedroom, replace pale linens with sheets or
a duvet cover in a deeper shade, piling on quilts,
eiderdowns, bedcovers, throws and blankets,
combining colours, patterns and fabrics for a
glorious, sumptuous mixture. And in the living
room, pile up cushions on sofas and armchairs for
a sense of cosy luxury, then add some generously
sized throws over the back: great for snuggling
under. You could use a length of tweed edged with
velvet ribbon, chunky knitting or crochet, fake fur or
soft fleece. Draw the curtains, light the fire, pull on
some fluffy socks, make a mug of hot chocolate and
settle down with a good book or a favourite box set
– baby it may be cold outside, but inside it’s warm,
cosy and welcoming.

10 things to do
in 2020
With New Year comes the usual wealth of resolutions – most of which inevitably end up broken
when you realise the leftover chocolate from Christmas just won’t eat itself. Sometimes the
best way to stick to those tricky promises is to break the process down into more manageable
chunks: try tackling one of these tasks per month, and you’ll have a productive 2020!
Go vegan 3
Ditch the meat and dairy for a more eco- and
animal-friendly diet by trying veganism, which not
only introduces you to a new way of understanding
and enjoying food, but has multiple health benefits.
A vegan diet can help lower blood pressure, reduce
the risk of diabetes and heart disease, and halve
your greenhouse gas emissions.
The Wigan Vegan Community provides a
social space for vegans to share food, ideas
and resources, meeting at Beech Hill Bookcycle.
As well as hosting regular vegan-friendly social
events, the community campaigns against
animal cruelty and shares tips for making tasty
vegan meals. They also encourage people
to grow their own produce and promote the
positive environmental and health implications
of a vegan diet. More info at
www.wiganvegancommunity.org.uk
Vegan North is a cookbook that compiles delicious
vegan recipes with profiles of some of the tastiest
vegan restaurants in the north of England. We have
a copy to give away free on our Facebook page –
don’t forget to give our page a like to stay updated
on future competitions.
Learn a new skill 3
Life has a way of becoming dreary when we’re
confined to the same 9-5 routine. Why not spice
things up a bit by picking up a new hobby or
learning a skill? Pick up a camera for the first time
and get out snapping photos of the local landscape
or wildlife, try a craft class, or learn to code –
whatever you choose, you’ll likely meet new friends
in the process and spark some creativity outside of
the drudgery of daily life.
Joining a club or society is a great way to get
started and meet likeminded people; alternatively,
why not enrol in an adult learning course?
There are some great free courses online too –
www.futurelearn.com is a great place to start.

could be time for a career change. It’s important
anything out.
Wigan Council offer CV and cover letter
Create a
Garden Getaway3
According to Local Life columnist Angie Barker:
‘Your garden is an opportunity to bring you joy.
Whatever challenges it poses, whether it is small,
an awkward shape, north facing, shaded by trees or
over looked, there is always a design solution which
can turn your outdoor space into a relaxing haven.
Life is hectic and we all need a space where we can
sit and relax, and whether your dream garden is
a pretty cottage garden or a sleek contemporary
outdoor room, with the right plants and the right
approach in terms of design, you can achieve your
dream garden.
‘Think of your garden as another room in your house
and suddenly you open up the possibilities. Even if
you do not consider yourself a gardener, or you have
limited time for maintenance, solutions are there
for you to create an outdoor space in which you will
want to spend time in and which brings you joy.’

Make a will 3
No-one likes to think about death, but
making a will is a great way to get some
peace of mind about the future, and
getting it sorted early leaves you free to
concentrate on happier things!
Karen at McHale Baker says:
Making a Will makes things much easier for
your family to deal with things when you die and
ensures that your wishes, rather than the standard
way defined by law, are carried out exactly as you
choose. Professional advice in this area is very
important as your Will can be a vehicle to saving
inheritance tax, safeguarding the inheritance of
children from previous relationships and protecting
against expensive long term care costs.
Fundraise
for a charity 3
Start upcycling
3
Fed up of the same old tired furniture lying around
your home? Why not try upcycling? The art of
upcycling refers to the process of transforming
used products or furniture into something of value
– people have even turned old oil drums into stylish
chairs, or basketballs into hanging baskets.
Upcycling reduces the need to send items to landfill
and helps reduce your eco-footprint along the way.
Have some old cassette tape boxes? Why not add
a layer of felt or sponge to the bottom and use it
to hold earrings? Old windows can be transformed
into rustic display cabinets for ornaments or
photos, while used mascara brushes are great for
cleaning in the nooks and crannies of jewellery or
keyboards.
Whether you’re hosting a bake sale or making a vow
of sponsored silence, there are plenty of fundraising
opportunities out there to help fund vital causes.
Uniting for a common goal is a great way to get
friends and family together too.
National causes like Cancer Research, The
Alzheimer’s Society and the RSPCA always
benefit from your support, but your efforts will
really help local causes like Wigan & Leigh
Hospice or The Brick which are supported
entirely through donations.
The Brick gives unloved furniture a shabby chic
look, helping to restore unwanted goods for resale
to raise money for local people living in poverty.
You can find them at The Brick Works on Arcade
Street (WN3 4EN), or by calling 01942 417290.

The colour of theYear
Tranquil Dawn, a soft shade of greyish-green, is paint
company Dulux’s colour of the year. It’s a calm, restful colour
that’s very easy to introduce into your interior.
One of four
colour palettes
based around
Dulux’s Tranquil
Dawn colour,
‘Meaning’
includes simple,
serene colours.
The gently curving shade of this pendant ticks all the boxes
when it comes to minimal Scandi style
Using Tranquil Dawn at Home
• This pale grey-green is inspired by the dawn horizon.
It’s a soft and easy-going natural and, as such, could be
employed to paint all your walls, providing you with a
delightfully calming and contemplative space. It also
looks good added in the form of window treatments,
upholstery, rugs or smaller accessories.
• Dulux has produced four colour palettes, each
consisting of ten colours, to demonstrate how to
combine Tranquil Dawn in different ways and create
a variety of effects. The ‘Care’ palette includes pale
pinks and blues, and is soft and airy for a soothing
atmosphere; the ‘Play’ palette uses bolder colours such
as citrus and crimson to create a sense of energy and
vibrancy; the ‘Meaning’ palette employs subtle greys
for a still, quiet space; and the ‘Creativity’ palette, with
sapphire, garnet and chocolate, is more moody and
intense. Take your pick according to your home style.
• Although this delicate shade looks gorgeous with
natural materials such as wood, leather, linen, stone and
wicker, it can also be teamed with sleek, shiny metallics
and plastics for a more chic, contemporary look, while
adding rich textures such as velvet or sheepskin will
give a sense of natural luxury.
Streamlined elegance characterises this sofa by
renowned Scandinavian design duo Anderson & Voll.
Outline Studio sofa, £2,195; Outline Studio chair,
New Year New Book
From poetry to decorating, we’ve got a pretty mixed bag of books for you this month…
A Year of Reading Aloud –
Georgina Rodgers (editor)
If you love poetry, try this
collection of ‘52 poems to
learn and love’, where you’ll
find well-known names such
as Sylvia Plath, E.E Cummings,
William Blake and Maya Angelou
alongside newer poets. Most of
the poems are short enough to learn, and they’re
accompanied by a paragraph about the poet. Take
up the challenge of learning one each week.
365 Days of Creativity – Lorna
Scobie
As the blurb says, “Creativity
is not just about making your
mark on the paper. It’s about
looking at the world a little
differently.” The daily artistic
challenges are split into how
they help you feel, so you can choose one based on
whether you want to feel calm, inspired, energetic
or reflective. They range from drawing patterns on
a snake to capturing the view through a doorway.
Grow Cook Eat Diary 2020 –
Sarah Raven
If you love gardening and
cooking this could be the diary
for you. Each month has a short
list of what to sow, plant and
harvest in your garden, along
with other garden-related tasks
and a simple recipe using in-season produce. Dishes
range from Cauliflower and Chickpea Curry to Beef
Carpaccio with Fennel Flowers. There are plenty of
stunning flower photographs throughout the diary,
with one image for each week.
A Year of Living Thankfully –
Lois Blyth
Can being more grateful
change your life? According
to this book it can, and Lois
Blyth is on a mission to show
you how. Each week, you’ll
work through an activity
to help you embrace gratitude and take pleasure
in the little things. There’s guidance on turning
negative thoughts around, learning to appreciate
what you have and not letting others spoil your
mood.
Farrow & Ball Recipes
for Decorating – Joa
Studholme
Planning to redecorate
this year? This book
might help you come
up with a plan. There are
thirteen case studies,
from city centre apartments to a classic Georgian
house, as well as tips and tricks for decorating each
room of your home. There’s also plenty of advice
on decorating in general, including making small
rooms look bigger and using colour to make an
impact.
Booker Prize Shortlist 2019 – Various
Looking for a new fiction book to lose yourself in
on a long winter’s night? Fancy trying something
a bit different to your usual genre? Treat yourself
to the six novels from the Booker Prize shortlist.
Stories range from Chigozie Obioma’s An Orchestra
of Minorities to Elif Shalak’s 10 Minutes 38 Seconds
in This Strange World. Read them all to see whether
you agree with the judges’ final decision.

Workplace Injury
If you are unfortunate to have sustained an
injury at work due to the negligence of your
employer or a co-worker, you may be entitled
to claim for damages for your pain and
suffering and any financial losses you have
suffered as a result.
Employers have a duty to their employees
to ensure their safety at work by making the
workplace as safe as possible. They must
also make sure that you have adequate
training, your equipment is safe and provide
appropriate personal protective equipment
where needed. Not only is it compulsory for health
and safety rules to be in place but these rules must
be adhered to by every employer.
Accidents in the workplace vary from slipping or
tripping, injuries caused by falling objects, a fall
from a height, falling down holes, crush injuries,
forklift truck accidents, defective equipment,
injuries caused by heavy lifting, exposure to fumes
or chemicals, repetitive strain injuries, or being the
victim of an assault at work.
Under the reporting of injuries, disease and
dangerous occurrences regulations (RIDDOR) your
employer must report any serious incident to the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Accidents at work can result in either minor injuries
or in a lot of cases, serious injuries which can lead
to you having to take a considerable time off work.
This can invariably lead to distress for you and your
family.
If you are confused as to what to do about making a
claim, contact us at ABH Law Limited. As part of our
instructions, we will assess your claim and guide
you to what is needed to pursue that claim. We will
look to recover what you are properly due. We are
happy to advise you at an initial free interview.
It is important to know that there are strict time
limits in making a claim so it is recommended that
you seek legal advice as soon as possible after your
accident. Even if the company you work for is no
longer trading, it is still possible for you to make a
claim.
So don’t delay, contact ABH Law Limited, Solicitors
who are committed to obtaining the compensation
to which you are entitled. We come with many
years’ experience in this field of law.
ABH Law Limited also pursue other claims which
A Rocky Road
By Jess Phillips
Towering spruce trees, unmarred stretches of fresh
snow, the perfect reflection of a mountainside in an
unblemished pool of blue - there’s nowhere else it
could be but Canada. Embark on a journey to the
westernmost part of the country to experience the
stunning mountains that comprise the Canadian
Rockies; listen closely enough and you might just
hear the chugging of a train as it passes through the
landscape.
Whether you’re heading to the striking Lake Louise,
the urban sprawl of Vancouver or the scenic Jasper
National Park, climb aboard to embrace the best of
what Western Canada has to offer.
Begin in Banff National Park, which successfully
fuses the park’s rugged wilderness with a series
of sophisticated hotels, bars and restaurants.
Framed behind a mountainous backdrop, the park
offers plenty of opportunities to get up close and
personal with awe-inspiring wildlife such as elk,
bears, mountain goats and bighorn sheep, all while
taking in the picture-perfect scenery. Embark on an
evening wildlife safari, try horseback riding or get
the adrenaline pumping with white water rafting –
whichever activity you choose, Banff National Park
is the perfect location to absorb some of Canada’s
natural beauty.
Nearby, Lake Louise is a breath-taking oasis amidst
the peaks and glaciers of the Rocky Mountains. The
lake was formed over 10,000 years ago when the
Victoria Glacier melted, which is what lends the lake
its iconic emerald hue. There are plenty of walking
trails around, including a magnificent 3.5km hike

51
through the peaceful pine forest to
unveil the charmingly rustic Lake Agnes
Tea House. Located on a hanging valley
on the shores of the neighbouring Lake
Agnes, the quaint tea house is best
viewed as the sun sets. It first opened
back in 1905 and now offers over 100
blends of loose leaf tea from across the
world.
Western Canada in the winter offers a
whole range of icy activities. Across the
10,000km² expanse of Jasper National
Park, don your skis, skates or snowshoes
to navigate your way across the slopes,
frozen Rocky Mountain lakes or vast
snowy fields. Alternatively, you can elect
to sit back and soak up the pearlescent land around
you from the back of a dog sled or horse-drawn
sleigh – what better way to experience Canada’s
finest? Close by, the Maligne Canyon is a spectacle
like no other – simply strap on your anti-slip cleats
and venture through a real winter wonderland while
adrenaline junkies attempt to climb the canyon’s
vertical ice sheets around you.
The bustling streets of Vancouver may make the
rolling landscape of rural Canada seem like a dream,
but with so much on offer in the city, you definitely
don’t want to pass this one by. Stanley Park is the
third largest park in North
America, situated just
outside of central Vancouver.
Inside the park’s limits you’ll
find countless hiking trails,
an aquarium and a nature
centre. The park itself backs
right onto the Burrard Inlet,
which in turn feeds into
the Pacific Ocean – take a
minute to unwind and take
in the majestic trees lining
the famous Seawall.
If you’re in the market
for shopping, check out
Granville Island. Previously
an industrial site, the area
has now been renovated
into a bohemian paradise
filled with quaint stores,
art galleries, cafes and food stalls. It’s the perfect
destination for a relaxed afternoon, whether you’re
just window shopping or picking up gifts to take
home.
Get a taste for Canada’s food scene with one of the
many restaurants lining the Vancouver streets. The
city is renowned for its seafood and specifically
for Pacific Northwest salmon, which is best served
fresh from the harbour. One of Canada’s best kept
secrets has to be British Columbian wine; made in
the many vineyards dotting the Vancouver suburbs,
it’s rarely permitted to leave the province due to
complex liquor legislation. Local restaurant menus
will be packed with British Columbia VQA wines
from various wine regions for you to sample.
Whether you choose to traverse Western Canada
by rail or by road, there’s so much to see and do
that you’ll be planning your return visit before your
plane home leaves the runway.

New Year
Resolutions
A Happy New Year to everyone, let’s hope you will all
“Prosper” throughout 2020. Amongst the nation’s
favourite resolutions are more exercise, more dieting
and less drink. Sadly, all these involve an element of
deprivation and it’s hardly surprising that even the
most strong willed of us are faltering by mid-February.
One resolution that you may want to retrospectively
add to your list, which importantly involves very
little pain but can have significant benefits, is to
have an investment health check.
Every January I notice a significant increase in the
number of enquiries from Local Life readers.
What prompts this increase?
Perhaps time off over Christmas, completion of
tax returns, whatever the trigger, reviewing and
revamping your portfolio now could make a
significant difference to your portfolio value. Apart
from weeding out the poor performing funds and
checking you’re still on track, you might find your
finances could be arranged more tax-efficiently.
I was recently talking to a new client who was
having a moan about the amount of paperwork
he was receiving from all his different investments.
At the heart of the problem was that “everything
was all over the place” - for every investment he
was dealing with a different company. He’d lost
complete control of his portfolio and the piles of
paper in his study had continued to grow. No action
was being taken by his previous adviser, potentially
costing him money.
He didn’t have a clue what his valuations were and
didn’t know how well his investments had been
performing. I asked him what his “ideal” would feel
and look like. He replied that he wanted to;
Retake full control of his investments rather than
getting swamped with paperwork and information.
Have “peace of mind” knowing that an expert was
also keeping an eye on his investments.
Invest in a wide choice of leading companies
without being tied in to a single company/fund.
Just deal with “one firm” for all of his different
investments rather than speaking to many.
It probably does not come as a great surprise to
learn that we have the solution to all these issues
and our Wealth Management Service delivers on
all the points above. Indeed one of our recently
engaged clients described the difference between
the old way of managing investments and using
the Prosper Wealth Management Service as “an
absolute revelation”.
READY
in 45 mins
Serves 4
Vegan Sweet Potato
& Chickpea Curry
A quick and easy vegetarian dish full of Indian flavour.
Serve with boiled basmati rice or warmed naan breads, if liked.
Ingredients
1-2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed
3cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled
and grated
1 large onion, peeled and chopped
1 aubergine, cubed
2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground turmeric
2 tsp ground coriander
½ tsp hot chilli powder
3 medium-sized sweet potatoes,
peeled and cubed
500g carton passata (sieved tomatoes)
400g can chick peas, rinsed
1 tsp garam masala
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Freshly chopped coriander, to garnish
Method
1 Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the garlic, ginger and
onion over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until light golden.
Stir in the aubergine and fry for a further 2 minutes.
2 Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until
fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water
and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook,
uncovered, for 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potato is tender
and the sauce has thickened.
3 Stir in the chick peas and garam masala and season to taste with salt
and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer for a further few minutes.
Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped coriander.
TIPS: If you don’t have all the spices just use 1-2 tbsp medium curry
paste. For a chunkier sauce use a 400g can of chopped tomatoes and
add 250ml water.

Sally’s Specials
by Marti of The Star Inn
The Star Inn
Sally’s
Cracked
Peppercorn
and Brandy
cream
The perfect
accompaniment to
almost any meal
and one of my
personal favourites
Method
Grab a thick bottomed pan or pot and start by warming up a little pomace oil.
Once the oil is warm (not roasting) add the whole black peppercorns, lightly
softening them in the warm oil.
Now add a sprinkling of the cracked black pepper, a tablespoon will be enough.
Make sure you are stirring all the time to stop them sticking.
The pan should be warm enough now to add the brandy to flambé, a generous
splash of Brandy is ok. Be careful and watch your eyebrows!
Ingredients
Pomace Oil
10-15 whole black
peppercorns
Cracked black pepper
Brandy
1 pint of double cream
1 pint of beef stock
Once the flame has gone the alcohol has cooked out and you can now add the
pint of double cream. Bring this to the boil but pay attention as the cream will
rise and boil over if not supervised.
Once the cream reaches boiling point, turn the heat down and add a good pint
of beef stock (this is where Sally’s secret ingredient takes place, but I’m keeping
that under lock and key I’m afraid)
Reduce for 20 minutes until the sauce reaches a creamy consistency, gradually
add more cracked black pepper to taste and salt and pepper to finish it off.
This sauce is amazing and will go with almost any dish you are making. It can
also be frozen in batches for the cold winter nights.

Sally’s at The Star Inn was launched in 2007 in homage to landlord and chef Marti’s mother
Sally, who passed away in 1996. A great cook herself, it was Sally’s lifelong dream to have a
restaurant in her name, and Marti wanted to honour that promise when he took the reins of
The Star Inn at Roby Mill.
Peppered
Mackerel Pâté
- Thai style
Serves 4
Ingredients
2 packs (4 fillets) of peppered or smoked mackerel
2 red chillies
1 pack of coriander
4 crushed gloves of garlic
1 halved and shredded lemongrass stalk
1 grated lemon rind
1 squeeze of lime
Small piece of ginger peeled & chopped finely
Half a block of butter
Seasoning
I love this recipe, its quick, easy and has the wow factor! It gives the classic pate a
twist with a sprinkling of Thai flavour
Method
Start by taking the back skin off the fish and discarding of any little bones you can see.
Break up the mackerel into a mixing bowl, again looking out for any little bones.
To an oiled frying pan add the crushed garlic, chopped chillies, coriander, ginger, lemon, lime and thoroughly
mix together cooking lightly for about three minutes to soften and release the flavours. Be careful not to burn
the mixture.
Once cooked, add to the fish and mix together well adding seasoning to taste.
Melt the butter in the microwave until completely soft and melted and fold through the mackerel mix.
Spoon the pate into suitable sized ramekins and chill for 3 hours.
When ready to eat, spread on hot buttered toast and indulge!

The Healthy Way to Do
Veganuary
Over the last few years, growing concerns
about the environmental cost of eating
meat and dairy products have transformed
veganism from a fringe dietary choice to
an everyday concept embraced by more
and more people. Unsurprisingly, then,
Veganuary is more popular than ever.
However, if you’re going vegan for a
whole month or more, it’s important to
understand how to get the vital nutrients
you usually might get predominantly
from meat or dairy.
Protein
One of the most often voiced concerns about
veganism is that a plant-based diet makes it hard
to meet your protein requirements. But with
knowledge and planning, it’s perfectly possible to
get all the protein you need from a vegan diet.
Proteins are made up of amino acids, which fall into
three categories:
· Non-essential amino acids: this misleading name
doesn’t mean they’re non-essential to our health,
but that they’re non-essential to our diet, as our
bodies can produce them.
· Conditional amino acids: only normally required
in our diet if we’re ill or under stress.
· Essential amino acids: amino acids our bodies
can’t make, so they are ‘essential’ elements of a
healthy diet.
Essential Amino Acids
There are nine essential amino acids and between
them, they perform functions such as: hormone,
energy, neurotransmitter, protein, haemoglobin
and enzyme production; mineral absorption;
muscle growth; detoxification; blood sugar
regulation and wound healing. You do not need to
eat essential amino acids at every meal, but you do
need to include them all in your meals over the day.
There are a few foods that provide all nine
essential amino acids in good quantity, including
soy, quinoa and buckwheat, so incorporating at
least one of these into your meals every day is an
easy way to ensure you’re getting all your essential
amino acids. Quorn products contain all nine too,
but check you’re buying the vegan rather than
vegetarian options that often include egg. Spirulina
is blue or green algae that’s high in protein, iron,
manganese and B vitamins (although not B12). It’s
available as a supplement or as a powder that can
be added to meals or drinks.
Some other dietary sources:
Phenylalanine: lentils, beans, nuts (particularly
peanuts, pistachios and almonds), seeds (pumpkin,
squash, watermelon and chia), and vegetables
(kale, broccoli and baked potatoes).
Valine: tofu, lentils, pumpkin seeds, peanuts,
mushrooms, whole grains, figs, apricots, kidney
beans and vegetables (broccoli and baked
potatoes).

65
Tryptophan: sesame seeds, sunflower seeds,
chickpeas and almonds.
Methionine: grains, peanuts, tempeh and seeds.
Leucine: tofu, tempeh, lentils, figs, apples, beans,
legumes, seeds (hemp, pumpkin and sunflower).
Iron:
Men aged 18 and over need about 8.7mg of iron
a day, while women (aged 19 to 50 years) need
about 14.8mg a day, and women over 50 just 8.7mg
of iron a day. Sources: pulses (beans, lentils and
peas), nuts, dried fruit such as raisins, dark-green
vegetables (watercress, broccoli and spring greens),
cereals fortified with iron and wholegrains such as
brown rice and brown bread.
Calcium:
Adults need about 700mg of calcium a day. Sources:
fortified unsweetened soya, rice and oat milk, leafy
green vegetables, almonds, sesame seeds and
tahini, dried fruit, pulses, brown (wholemeal) and
white bread (two slices of wholemeal bread (80g)
contain around 85mg of calcium).
Don’t forget that your body needs vitamin D to
absorb calcium.
Vitamin D:
While we can make Vitamin D when exposed to
sunshine, in the UK, we don’t get enough sunshine
to do so between October and March; the NHS
recommends that everyone should take a Vitamin
D supplement during this time. Sources: Spinach,
kale, fortified margarine, fortified fat spreads and
fortified breakfast cereals.
Vitamin B12:
Adults need about 1.5 micrograms of vitamin B12 a
day and vegan sources are limited.
Sources: Products fortified with B12, e.g. yeast
extract spreads such as Marmite, breakfast cereals
and soya products.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
There’s currently no recommended daily intake.
Sources: flaxseed oil, rapeseed oil, mangoes,
walnuts, butternut squash and soya-based foods
(such as tofu).

Exercise
The Most Effective Drug Ever?
“If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most costeffective
drugs ever invented,” says health promotion
consultant Dr Nick Cavill. That’s true, because the
benefits of exercise go way beyond simple ‘fitness’.
Physical Health Benefits
Research has proved that regular exercise can
actively help to prevent disease and debility. It can:
· Lower blood pressure (in turn lowering risk of
stroke, heart attack, heart failure and kidney
disease).
· Help prevent some cancers and diseases,
including colon and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s
and Type 2 diabetes.
· Increase muscle mass and strength, bone
strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility
and balance, helping to prevent strains, injuries,
falls, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.
· Regulate hormones that control appetite and
sleep patterns.
· Help control weight.
· Release endorphins that ease pain.
· Improve bowel function and prevent
constipation.
By improving your physical health and preventing
falls, exercise can increase your longevity too.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Benefits
Exercise can:
Improve your mood, self-esteem and sleep patterns
Exercise can improve sleep patterns and release
endorphins that can lift your mood and increase
your energy levels. By improving your fitness and
appearance, and giving you goals, routine and a
sense of achievement, it can also increase your selfesteem.
Improve your mental health
Poor sleep can contribute to physical health
issues and depression, anxiety, poor memory and
concentration. Exercise can improve your sleep and
is proven to help alleviate anxiety, stress and mild
to moderate depression. Just 10 minutes of brisk
walking can increase mental alertness, energy and
positivity, while increasing your activity from zero
to exercising three times a week can reduce your
depression risk by almost 20%.
Improve your sex life
Regular exercise may increase your desire for, and
enjoyment of, sex by improving your self-esteem,
fitness and flexibility. Research shows that more
active men and women have more sex, and that
regular exercise may enhance arousal for women
and make erectile dysfunction less likely for men.
Give you ‘time off’
Some of your exercise should make you out of
breath, but you can also do more relaxing forms of
exercise like tai chi, Pilates and yoga. Any exercise
can give you time to focus on you, rather than your
everyday concerns.
Get you outdoors
Research has proved the benefits of ecotherapy
and being active outdoors. Getting outside to enjoy
some fresh air and sunshine is great for your mental
and physical health, helping you produce the
Vitamin D essential for absorption of calcium and
good bone health.
Improve your social life and family life – and have
some fun!
Exercise can be fun, and by joining exercise classes
or activity groups, you will also benefit from the
positive effects that socialising and friendship can
have on your health and wellbeing. Team sports can
bring a sense of belonging and motivation.
Zumba, tennis, rowing, boxing, karate, netball,
Pilates, dancing… there are many types of sport
and exercise, so try out a few to find something you
really enjoy.
How to beat
type 2 diabetes
When his diabetes doctor suggested he should share
how he put his diabetes into remission, John Spring
went one better, he wrote a humorous book about it.
I’ve now been in remission from type 2 diabetes
(T2D) for eight years, so I guess I must be doing
something right. Being in remission means that T2D
isn’t damaging me anymore. The newly diagnosed
will have been made well aware of the longer-term
havoc it can do to their bodies. Unless, when they
were told, they put their fingers in their ears and
started humming, “La, la, la, I’m not listening”. Which
is exactly what I did for several years.
5% of the UK’s adult population have been diagnosed
with T2D, and another 1.3% don’t know they have
it yet. By the year 2035, 10% of us will be type 2
diabetic. That might make the recently diagnosed
feel a little better, as there is some safety in numbers,
but the NHS isn’t too keen on the prospect.
New patients may not be feeling any immediate
effects of T2D, so it becomes easy to be complacent.
You can liken it to a mild acid flowing around your
body, slowly eating away at your nerves, your
organs and your eyes. It is the end of this slow
production line of diabetic damage that the NHS is
now contending with.
I’d read about rapid weight loss having a high
success rate in putting T2D into remission and
the NHS is now trialling liquid-based diets of 800
calories per day. There’s also bariatric surgery, but
it isn’t infallible as a patient’s bad eating habits can
find ways around it. Likewise, you probably don’t
want to survive on liquids for the rest of your life,
especially if they don’t contain alcohol.
I devised my own practical regime for losing weight
fast. The most positive benefit of this workable
approach was that I learned how to avoid temptation
by becoming the master of my own food. I also
learned how to fit exercise into my busy life. These
are the lessons that have kept me in remission.
I started by identifying the heavy hitters in my diet.
I then developed workarounds to drastically reduce
my consumption of those. I also pre-prepared my
own breakfast and lunch, thus avoiding the calorific
temptations lurking in coffee shops and lunchtime
sandwich bars. My home cooked dinners featured
healthier ingredients and I soon realised that there
really is no such thing as a low-calorie takeaway.
I discovered convenient exercise by walking set
routes every day and I built up to being the world’s
most unlikely runner. After four months I had lost
four stone and my blood sugar came down from
60 mmol to 42mmol (48 mmol is the diabetic
threshold). I’d also equipped myself with the
knowledge of how to maintain that weight loss.
The low-calorie liquids or the surgeon’s knife may
well kick T2D into remission, but they’re arduous
procedures to undertake. Staying in remission is
also hard work, but that has been made easier for
me by using a new lifestyle to beat this lifestyle
related disease.
‘How I Beat Type 2 Diabetes’ by John Spring is available
on Amazon. £7.99.

Lydiate Loop
by Chris Pearce
Distance: 5¼ miles Difficulty: Easy
There are a couple of factors we consider when
deciding the location of our Jack’s Tracks walks at
certain times of the year. We picked this particular
walk for our January magazines because it’s fairly
easy underfoot – it’s almost wholly-based around
the gravel beds of an old railway line and on canal
towpaths. And with the lack of daylight hours at this
time of year, it’s important that it can be completed
in good time, and so this 5¼ mile Lydiate Loop ticks
all the boxes for a good winter walk which can be
completed in under 2 hours.
Park up on Hall Lane by Our Lady’s Catholic Church
(L31 4HH) and turn left at the main Southport Road
heading towards Maghull. After 200 yards you’ll see
a gate and footpath sign, so cross over the road and
go through the gate.
Follow the clearly defined path round the edge
of the small wood until you reach a field. Turn left
and follow the path around the perimeter of the
field for approximately 1/3 mile until you arrive at a
single-track road (Acres Lane). Turn left and, almost
immediately, you’ll see a concrete track on your
right with a steel gate. Hop over the stile on the left
of the gate.
Follow the track to the left-hand side of a copse until
you reach the Cheshire Lines, then take a left turn
down the path, which used to be an old train line.
The Southport & Cheshire Lines Extension Railway
was used to transport passengers and freight from
the Liverpool area up to the disused Southport Lord
Street station between 1884 and 1952.
550 yards further down the Cheshire Lines path,
you’ll arrive at an opening at the junction with Carr
Lane (this was the actual site of the old Lydiate
Railway Station). Carry on in the same direction
for approximately one mile, taking in the views

70
of Liverpool in the
distance, until you arrive at
Maghull Brook. Turn left here and follow the track
past the farm to a dog-leg bend on Green Lane.
Turn left and follow this narrow road for just over
600 yards until you reach St John Bosco school. Take
a left down the footpath opposite the school (you
may have to navigate the mud here), and follow the
path in the same direction until you reach Maghull
Brook. Cross the bridge and then take an immediate
right and go around the edge of the field until you
reach Bells Lane.
Turn right and follow the road to the Running Horse
pub and, before the bridge, turn left down the
towpath alongside the canal. Follow the towpath
for almost ¾ mile to Bridge 17a
(Lollies Bridge) where you’ll
need to come off the towpath,
cross the bridge and descend
to the better maintained
towpath on the other side of
the canal – following the towpath
in the same direction as previously.
Exit the towpath at Bridge 19 and
turn left, crossing the canal over Hall Lane
Bridge and follow Hall Lane in the same direction,
passing through rural Lydiate for ¾ mile until you
arrive back at Our Lady’s Church.
If you’re looking for a few interesting diversions,
all within striking distance of the walk’s start/finish
point, you can visit the remains of St Catherine’s
Chapel (see picture) on Southport Road, or you
can visit Lydiate Hall Farm, where you can visit the
remains of Lydiate Hall and also the farm shop and
cafe.
Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and
footwear whilst walking. Whilst every care has been
taken to ensure that the walk is accurate, neither the
publisher or its editorial contributors can accept, and
hereby disclaim, any liability to any party to loss or
Safe
Not Sorry
Anyone who’s ever been cheated by a cowboy
tradesperson knows the impact it can have on your
life and home. Trust doesn’t come easily if you’ve
been duped once, knowing it could happen again.
That’s where Wigan Council’s Good Trader Scheme
comes in. The 170 local businesses who have
already signed up to the scheme have agreed to
abide by a code of conduct set out by the Trading
Standards team at Wigan Council, ensuring good
business practice and compliance with relevant
legislation. Signing up to be part of the database
reassures clients and potential clients that they
can expect reliable, trustworthy service when they
book a job with a selected trader.
The database of tradespeople mainly covers all
aspects of home improvements and repair work,
including building, external property repairs,
gardening, decorating and home security, with the
overall aim of reducing the number of customer
complaints from unreliable tradespeople.
If you’re a consumer looking for someone to carry out
work, simply:
1. Visit www.goodtraderscheme.com
2. Enter your postcode and specify the type of
trader you’re looking for
3. Select the right trader for you based on their
profile page, star ratings and reviews.

77
A note for tradespeople
Joining the scheme requires proof that your business
is dedicated to fair and honest trading practices. You
must have been trading for a minimum period of
12 months, be able to provide 3 references showing
good customer service, and have a minimum of
£2million Public Liability Insurance and £5million
Employer’s Liability (if applicable). Traders undergo
a series of checks by Trading Standards officers, and
any complaints received about the tradesperson
will be investigated. New applicants are required to
pay an admin fee of £30, and annual membership
fees start from £85 depending on the number of
employees.
For more information or to download an application
form visit: www.goodtraderscheme.com
or call 0303 333 111.
Here are some trades covered by the Good Trader Scheme:
• Builders
Bring your winter garden to life with
fragrance
Award Winner
by Angie Barker
The garden can
seem a pretty dull
and lifeless space
at this time of year.
The outline of bare
stems of trees and
shrubs and lawns
either waterlogged
or frozen, do
nothing to lift our
spirits and take
our minds off that
impending credit
card bill.
photo: Magnus Manske
There is a way to
bring life and a little cheer into your garden and that
is with winter flowering shrubs. And shrubs which
are also scented really do lift the spirits at this time
of year. Here are a few of my favourites, and are all
best planted near a path or doorway where you can
appreciate their sweet perfume:
Sarcococca confusa – a relatively small shrub with
tiny white flowers but what it lacks in size it makes
up for with the most amazing scent. Planted near a
shady front door it will bring a smile to yours – and
your postman’s – face.
Daphnes are brilliant for providing winter flowers
which are scented. Two of the best are Daphne
odora ‘Aureo-marginata’ and Daphne bholua
‘Jacqueline Postill’. The former won’t get much
taller than a metre and is evergreen so apart from
the lovely scent and pretty pink flowers, it is a very
useful shrub in a border. They prefer a sunny spot.
Mahonia x media. These are large shrubs and
can reach 4m in height. ‘Charity’ is gorgeous with
attractive yellow scented flowers that sit beside
leaves which look a little like Holly. Evergreen, it will
bring year round structure to your garden.
Hamamelis x intermedia is a large (up to 4m)
deciduous shrub with scented spider like flowers.
‘Aurora’ is one of the most fragrant with pretty little
flowers which are yellow and red at the base.
So if you think your garden lacks interest at this time
of year, start planning now for next winter and take
a trip to the garden centre. Bypass the sale of left
over Christmas decorations and head outside for the
plants.
As for Hubby, well he is busy planning too. He wants
to know when is the best time to open that bottle of
sherry left over from Christmas!
Happy New Years gardening everyone.
Angie is a qualified
award-winning garden
designer who will
plan your garden to
your needs from start
to finish, supplying
reputable contractors
and the ideal plants.
Hybrids
Explained
What is a hybrid?
As the name suggests, it’s a hybrid of an electric
vehicle and an internal combustion engine. It will
have a battery-powered electric motor that will
work in conjunction with the combustion engine to
power the wheels.
Generally, the idea is that the electric motor
takes care of the driving at low speeds or while
accelerating, because that’s when a combustion
engine is at its most inefficient. Then, once up to
speed, when the engine can run at low effort to
keep things ticking along, it takes over.
Types of hybrid
Mild hybrid (MHEV) - They typically have a small
battery and an electric motor that can take over
running the car’s ancillaries, such as the headlights
and air conditioning.
This means the engine can be turned off to save
fuel at times when it is not needed, such as when
decelerating or when stopped.
Hybrid - When you hear a car referred to as simply
a ‘hybrid’ alone, it tends to mean that it has the
capability to run on pure electric but the batteries
can only be recharged through regenerative braking.
This is when motors in the wheels ‘harvest’ energy
that would normally be lost when decelerating and
braking and uses it to replenish the battery charge.
However, because they rely on deceleration to
charge, if you do a lot of motorway miles at a
consistent speed you could find the battery is dead
once you get to a town where you could use EV mode.
Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) - Plug-in hybrids are the
ultimate form of hybrid models, because they can
plug into an external source of electricity to charge
the batteries.
This means you can top the batteries up to full
charge overnight and thus maximise the electriconly
range. If your daily commute is quite short you
might rarely need petrol power, saving you lots of
money in the long run.
The downside is that the charging technology
tends to make PHEVs pricier than other hybrids, and
if you have no means to charge the battery yourself,
save that initial cash and go for a normal hybrid.
Are hybrid cars reliable?
Despite a complex powertrain and the multitude
of new technologies incorporated into a hybrid’s
setup, they are as reliable as a conventional car.
In fact, many older hybrids have achieved high
mileages with little to no fuss, and because of the
stronger regeneration you get from a hybrid there’s
less stress on the brakes too.
