America’s Showcase of New Homes

It’s a beautiful day in the Kensington neighborhood, one 

of the region’s top new home sites, and the location of 

Greater Cincinnati’s 56th HOMEARAMA ® . Even though 

thousands of people visit the show each year, each visit is 

a truly personal experience. We are grateful to JP Flooring 

Design Center and Two Men And A Truck for serving as 

this year’s presenting sponsors. 

For one couple, it may be to visualize the dream home 

of their future. For another, it will be great to get ideas on 

kitchen designs, and for others, it will be to experience 

the creative outdoor living spaces and mouth-watering 

entertainment centers. Some may visit the show to see the latest in home 

decorating, appliances and furnishings. HOMEARAMA ® is a place to dream, 

experience and learn about the comforts of a new home. 

Vote for your Favorite Home, Decorating and Landscaping on either the free 

Cincinnati HOMEARAMA ® app, available on Apple and Google, or make your 

selections at one of the kiosks as you exit the show. Some lucky participant will 

win two tickets to Chicago via Ultimate Air Shuttle and $250 for lodging. 

Kensington, developed by Erbeck Development Company, is located in one 

of the region’s top living destinations. It’s close to the Deerfield Towne Center 

and located in the highly-rated Mason City School District. The Kensington entry 

leads through gently rolling hills and along tree-lined boulevards, reminiscent of 

an English garden. Amenities include walking paths, a swimming pool, cabana, 

fireplace, outdoor yard games and 23 acres of green space. 

This year’s show homes, priced between $900,000 to over $1 million, include 

10 fully decorated and landscaped one-of-a kind estate homes on a private street. 

Attendees will have an opportunity to meet with some of the region’s most 

talented custom builders. 

Over 25 vendors are participating in the HomeZone exhibit tent located at 

the show’s entrance. Get refreshed during your visit at the concession area, 

sponsored by Vonderhaar’s Catering. Many special events will also be held

While trends in lighting can come and go as quickly as you can refresh your 

Pinterest or Instagram feed, there are some that develop long-lasting potential. 

So we asked HOMEARAMA ® designers to identify the major lighting trends of 

today and why they are so appealing. continued >

FIBERS 

Lamp shades made of 

woven natural fibers such as 

rattan finally have evolved 

beyond the traditional “basket” 

shape. By bringing 

their unique brand of lightweight 

texture and warmth 

to drum, globe and flushmount 

styles, to name a 

few, they’ve expanded their 

potential and their popularity.

MIXED FINISHES 

Light fixtures now have 

another thing in common 

with living room sets and 

bedroom suites: Every piece 

in the room doesn’t have to 

match. 

“Ten years ago, people 

worked extremely hard 

to make sure every light 

they picked was the exact 

same color and finish,” says 

Rick Seitz, decorator with 

John Candle Homes. But 

not today. Once-outlandish 

combinations like bronze 

and satin brass, or black 

with polished brass, bring 

fresh depth to a room. 

Many fixtures even incorporate 

more than one finish 

or material—combining 

metal with warm jute, sleek 

glass or elegant marble, for 

example.

EXPOSED CORDS 

Just as exposed bulbs can relax 

a room with an intentionally 

undone look, exposed cords 

now are a design feature that 

caters to laid-back styles, including 

industrial and farmhouse. 

Some fixtures even incorporate 

rattan-wrapped cords that can 

be draped over furniture for a 

bohemian vibe. 

STATEMENT—NOT 

ACCENT—PIECES 

Lighting that draws the eye 

and brings the “wow” is a 

simple way to set the mood or 

establish a focus for the room. 

Look for pieces with interesting 

material, construction, shape or 

arrangement, as well as overthe-top 

embellishment. 

BLACK 

Even though lighting is more 

like jewelry than clothing, a 

black light fixture shares some 

similarities with a little black 

dress: It works in nearly any 

setting and its demure tone 

easily complements other elements. 

“Black is your best bet to 

go with throughout the house 

because it doesn’t matter what 

you put it with,” says Kim Fox 

of Kimberly Fox Designs, who 

is incorporating black and gold 

fixtures throughout the first 

floor of J&K Custom Homes’ 

HOMEARAMA ® entry. 

MIDCENTURY LINES 

Although midcentury modern 

furniture can be a little too minimal 

for some people, designers 

say midcentury lighting has 

made the leap to the masses. 

That’s partly because today’s 

iteration has a Scandinavian 

influence, with simple, yet 

interesting and often geometric 

shapes that are even attractive 

to homeowners with a traditional 

aesthetic.

With so many different hues and textures available 

today, there’s a gold finish for nearly every decor style 

and color scheme. Gold leaf and antique brass are classic 

choices, while rose gold is a newer introduction. Its 

unexpected warmth pairs surprisingly well with many 

wood finishes. Winter gold—an even trendier choice— 

blends chrome and brass tones, so it plays well with 

both these finishes, as well as gray and beige palettes. 

But take care when trying to match gold fixtures from 

different manufacturers, Fox says. Many finishes vary 

just slightly, so take a sample with you when shopping 

or, even better, compare the pieces side-by-side in your 

room before removing the tags. 

OVERSIZED 

Style and finish aren’t the only way for lighting to make 

an impact. Homeowners and designers today are going 

big with intentionally supersized fixtures. 

“Scale is always a challenge for most people, and 

many of my clients are terrified of making a mistake with 

too small or too large of lighting,” says Danielle Harris, 

one of the designers for Fischer Homes’ HOMEARAMA ® 

entries. “But with this new trend, it’s okay to go bold 

and pack a savvy punch with something over the top.” 

(Check out the master bedroom of The Paxton and the 

kitchen and dining room of The Marshall for examples.) 

The kitchen island is a popular place to pump up the 

dimensions. Fox and Farrah Taylor, of Taylor Interior 

Designs, see homeowners using two large pendants 

instead of three or one plus-size pendant instead of two. 

The playful nature of this trend is ideal for kids’ rooms 

or to help lighten the mood of serious spaces, like a 

study.

Does the name “Kensington” call to mind 

royal refinement, classic architecture and magnificently 

manicured landscape gardens? The 

association is quite intentional. 

“The theme of this community derives heavily 

from London’s Buckingham Palace, Holland 

Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Palace 

grounds,” explains Hannah Worth with Fischer 

Homes, the co-developer for the property. 

“With Kensington’s suburban location and 

close proximity to area conveniences, we saw a 

parallel with London’s parks being within such 

a bustling area,” Worth says. “Our main goal 

was to create a luxury oasis for homeowners 

to enjoy the convenient location, while feeling 

like they were in an exclusive, private setting.” 


Kensington’s entrance monument was inspired 

by the North Gate entrance to Kensington Palace 

Gardens—a tree-lined London street that’s home 

to embassies and billionaires. White painted brick 

columns, Victorian-style lanterns, archways and 

wrought-iron fencing echo the North Gate’s construction, 

and are repeated in the community’s cabana, 

pool and fireplace. 

Within the community, Kensington’s 23 sprawling 

acres of green space borrow elements from London’s 

famous parks, with ponds, groomed gardens and 

spacious lawns that provide the ideal setting for a 

friendly game of giant chess. 

Of course landscape gardens are the defining characteristic 

of these spaces, here or across the pond. At 

the community entrance and pool house, Kensington’s 

landscaper, Ward + Thornton Landscapes, incorporated 

a formal English garden style. There is a structured 

hierarchy of plantings, with low-growing foliage and 

flowers in front, mid-height plants in the middle and 

tall, groomed, green velvet boxwood hedges—an 

iconic English landscape feature—at the back, says 

Rick Doesburg, CEO of Ward + Thornton.

Beyond the pool, two large landscaped beds 

are meant to be enjoyed by people out walking 

around the community, and have a natural, 

romantic feel inspired by the gardens of 

historic English homes. Walkways, a patio and 

seating are tucked amongst masses of flowering 

perennials, lush hydrangeas—another 

favorite flower for English gardens, traditional 

English roses, small-scale Drift roses and small 

grasses for fine texture, Doesburg says. Similar 

to the garden “rooms” found in many English 

parks, Norway spruce trees provide a level of 

privacy and separation. 

But unlike London’s Royal Parks, Kensington 

doesn’t have a staff to tend to the gardens 

every day, so the selections here focus on low 

maintenance and high impact, Doesburg says. 

His team prioritized plants that would provide 

long-lasting color, including evergreens, summer-blooming 

roses, coneflowers and Drift 

roses, which can bloom almost continuously 

from spring to early winter.

In today’s wide open floor plans, the kitchen is the 

heart of the home. It’s where the kids do homework 

and where everyone gathers during parties. But it’s 

also where we need to defrost meat, peel potatoes, cut 

onions and scrape dirty dishes. With no walls separating 

the living and hosting spaces from the kitchen, there’s 

no hiding the noise and mess that comes with cooking 

and food prep.

So, really, it was only a matter of time until we 

began looking for ways to bake our cake and eat it 

too, while keeping those beautiful granite countertops 

clean and clear. Enter the “working pantry.” Or 

the “prep kitchen,” “super pantry” or even the “messy 

kitchen” (yes, some builders really are calling it that). 

When fully stocked, a working pantry provides all 

the amenities needed to move unsightly kitchen tasks 

out of sight. 

“It’s going back to the early 1900s” when many 

homes had back kitchens, says HOMEARAMA ® 

interior designer Farrah Taylor, of Taylor Interior 

Designs. 

Countertops and outlets are defining features that 

enable today’s pumped-up pantry to get to work— 

doing more than passively storing small appliances 

and staples like canned goods. With an open work 

surface and power, you can slice and dice, toast, 

blend or let the slow cooker do its thing without 

occupying valuable real estate in the kitchen. To 

keep the ingredients for a recipe close at hand, many 

of these pantry spaces also include a supplemental 

refrigerator. The pantries in two HOMEARAMA ® 

homes last year (Homegrown and Heritage A, by 

High Pointe Custom Homes) featured this amenity, 

and this year, the “kitchen annex” in The Hampton, 

House #6 by J&K Custom Homes, provides everything 

needed to make a smoothie, including a fridge 

and ice maker.

American Remodel home (seen above), which is sponsored

and Professional Remodeler magazine, houses a prep 

sink, pizza oven, built-in coffee system and additional 

grill. 

Savvy homeowners and kitchen designers take

While it may sound like a splurge, incorporating 

a working pantry into a new home could 

allow homebuyers to cut a few corners. Although 

the countertops and cabinetry in the pantry of the 

New American Remodel match the high-end finishes 

in the show home’s kitchen, in most homes 

this area is meant to be out of sight, so owners 

can opt for durable, affordable styles like metal 

shelving and laminate countertops. And when 

small appliances and entertaining supplies—like 

serving platters, barware and the “good” china— 

are housed in the pantry, the kitchen may not 

need as much cabinetry and countertop space, 

notes Michelle Moran, partner and co-founder of 

J&K Custom Homes.
