I’ve lived in Ohio my entire life. Born and raised in the Cleveland area, I moved
to Cincinnati after graduating from Miami University. And this wonderful city
has been my home ever since…I won’t go into exactly how many years, but let’s
just say it’s been decades.
While it’s not a dramatic shift, the weather is just a bit more pleasant in this
part of the state. We typically get considerably less snow, and this time of year,
spring starts a week or two earlier—and I am not alone when it comes to welcoming
things greening up outside.
Out on the bike trails, I pass families riding with young children then racers
in their colorful shirts pass by me. But it doesn’t matter, I am enjoying my ride.
This is a great community when it comes to biking and hiking trails—we’re at
the center of one of the country’s most extensive trail systems, reaching from
the Ohio River to Lake Erie and points to the east and west in between. See all
the places you can go in our feature “Happy Trails” on page 15.
When I am hanging out closer to home, it’s often in my backyard grilling out
for family and friends. Last year in a bit of a staying healthy leap, we joined the
national craze and added a pickleball court. Nearby is a patio deck with comfy
chairs and sofas for recovering after the match and perhaps enjoying an adult
beverage. This year we hope to add a firepit into the mix. Ellen and I are looking
forward to gathering around the fire and sharing stories and s’mores with our
grandchildren.

No matter what route you take, I hope you manage to enjoy plenty of days in

Cincinnati area cyclists have
miles and miles to go—and
that’s great news
Whether you’re a Sunday rider or an off-trail blazer, when it comes to riding your bike, it’s good
to know you have safe and scenic options. There are miles and miles of trails—both paved and
natural surfaces—that lead through wooded vistas to connect Cincinnati to neighboring towns
such as Newtown, Loveland and Lebanon. One trail will even take you as far away as Lake
Erie. And closer to home, another will soon loop you through 34 miles in Greater Cincinnati.
“Hamilton County is at the epicenter of one of the country’s most extensive multi-use trail
systems,” says Todd Palmeter, CEO with Great Parks of Hamilton County. “Bikers, walkers
and hikers have access to over 840 miles of trails in Greater Cincinnati alone—and that distance
keeps on growing. More connections are being added every year.” ➻

THE LOVELAND BIKE TRAIL
Probably the most well-known of all,
this paved, flat trail also known as
the Little Miami Scenic State Park,
runs alongside the Little Miami River
and was one of the first rail-to-trail
projects in the country. It’s the fourth
longest paved trail in the United
States—78.1 miles traversing five
southwestern counties in the state
of Ohio.
On the southern end it begins near
the Lunken Airport end of Beechmont
Avenue then crosses through
Newtown, Milford, Miami Township,
Loveland, Lebanon and on to
its northernmost point, Springfield.
There are free parking spaces and
restaurants found at many trailside
locations.
MAKING THE CONNECTION
The Loveland Bike Trail is only one
of several trails that connect at various
access points leading east, west
and points in between. Here are just
a few:
• The Ohio to Erie Trail begins as
the Loveland Bike Trail and then
joins other trails to span from the
Ohio River in the south to Lake
Erie in the north.
• The Great Miami Trail runs somewhat
parallel to The Loveland
Bike Trail. It travels from Middletown
to Piqua where it connects
with westward-reaching, Ohio-to-
Indiana Trail, which culminates in
Greenville, Indiana.
• To the east, the Xenia-Jamestown
Connector provides 18.5 miles
of trail traveling through rural
Greene and Fayette Counties,
with its final stop in Octa, Ohio.

CROWNING THE QUEEN CITY
Work is underway to complete our city’s first urban loop trail, the CROWN, a
34-mile trail that will traverse 54 neighborhoods connecting people to parks,
schools, workplaces, stores, recreational areas and entertainment venues.
By weaving together existing trails including Wasson Way, Ohio River Trail
East, Little Miami Scenic Trail, Ohio River Trail West, Mill Creek Greenway
Trail, and Canal Bikeway, the CROWN will allow for a complete loop that travels
from downtown Cincinnati’s riverfront, along the Ohio River, past Lunken Airport
to Anderson Township and circling back to the riverfront via communities
including Mariemont, Hyde Park and Norwood.
The Columbia Connector begins at Newtown Road and runs alongside the
Little Miami River, parallel to Wooster Pike. Plans are to connect that 1.6-mile
segment to a Mariemont Connector and eventually to Murray Path which is
part of the CROWN.
OFF THE PAVED PATH
If you yearn for dirt under your tires or toes, the Cincinnati Off-Road Alliance
(CORA) maintains 115 miles of multi-use natural surface trails for mountain
bikers, hikers and trail runners, in several southwestern Ohio areas, along with
Covington, Fort Thomas and Burlington in Northern Kentucky.

BOURBON SLUSH FOR A CROWD
This recipe is a favorite summer drink for creative director Gina Miller.
Her friend, Ken Krusling, shares his recipe here.
INGREDIENTS
• 3-4 cups RJ straight bourbon whiskey (depending on taste)
• 12 oz frozen lemonade
• 6 oz frozen orange juice (1/2 of a 12 oz can)
• ¾ cup of sugar (add more for a sweeter slush)
• 3 regular sized tea bags
• 7 cups water
Add tea bags to two cups of water and bring to a boil to make
a strong tea. Add sugar and let it dissolve. In a large freezer safe
container, add tea and 7 cups of water. Mix in remaining ingredients.
Freeze overnight. If slush is not frozen enough, add another cup or
two of water and refreeze. Scoop into a Mason jar or Solo cup. Top
with a maraschino cherry and a spoonful of cherry juice.
Gina notes: Some of her friends prefer to add a splash of Sprite. This adds a
bit of fizz to the drink and expands the number of servings. Main recipe makes
about twelve 8 oz drinks.

Booze and barbecues go hand in hand. Create a cocktail just for the occasion. Give it your own stamp and a
clever name. Find a shady corner to situate a space dedicated to beverages. Be sure to include non-alcoholic
options like iced tea, lemonade, and flavored waters for non-drinkers and designated drivers. Keep plenty
of ice on hand in buckets, coolers or add a rustic touch and build a bar on the move in a wheelbarrow. ➻

FEED WITH UNEXPECTED FOOD
There’s no doubt food tastes better when
it’s eaten outside. It also tastes better

Jacob Hacker, shares a few tips on how to make your charcuterie especially

You can easily scale these to fit whatever crowd you are entertaining, and ingredients can be as
affordable or high-end as you see fit. Here are a few guidelines for getting started.
MEATS: CHOOSE 2+
The original definition of a charcuterie is a collection of cold, cooked meats. So, this is a good place
to start. Consider picking a reliable classic such as ham or turkey. Then add a spicier selection
or two. Jacob recommends Leoncini Prosciutto di Parma, Smoking Goose Sopressata Salami, and
Zoe’s Ghost Pepper Salami. “I am particularly partial to the Smoking Goose brand which is made
in Indianapolis. They source all their pork from farms in Indiana. It’s uniquely spiced with a little
nutmeg and clove.”
CHEESES: CHOOSE 4+
Selecting a soft cheese, a semi-soft cheese, a firm cheese, and a blue cheese will provide for a
balanced combination. Have fun with these selections, they seem to generate the most buzz
among your guests. Jacob particularly likes Point Reyes Blue Cheese, Urban Stead Gouda (made
in Walnut Hills) and Barber’s English Cheddar. “The Urban Stead Gouda is a well-balanced, nice
and buttery, younger gouda.”
BREAD & CRACKERS: 2-3
A few clusters of gourmet crackers work well for staging those smaller bites. Add a hearty bread,
such as a baguette, ciabatta, or nutty whole grain loaf, sliced into small sections. “I like Firehook
crackers,” Jacob says. “They’re thin but sturdy crackers. And they’re really good.”
FRUITS: 3+
Fruits are great for adding splashes of color to your board. Consider using dried or candied
fruits, like dried apricots and dried strawberries, Jacob says. “We carry a lot of these in our bulk
and produce departments. For fresh fruit I am partial to pears more than apples. And grapes
obviously.”
SPREADS: 2+
You should include at least one sweet and one savory spread. Jungle Jim’s carries a great item
made by “In the Curious Kitchen” in Northern Kentucky. “The owner, Mary Hennigan, makes
a bourbon honey mustard that’s amazing,” says Jacob. A hummus or tapenade also works well.
The sky is the limit on the sweet side. It could be as simple as a local honey, or as elegant as a
homemade chutney or jam.
FINAL TOUCHES
Small but mighty details to add include pickles, veggies, and olives. “At Jungle Jim’s, our olive bar
has every olive you can think of,” Jacob says. “I am partial to blue cheese or garlic stuffed myself.”
Add in a variety of nuts—walnuts, cashews, almonds, pistachios, and pecans—there’s not a bad
choice in the bunch. A sprig of rosemary, or another fresh herb, adds a perfect finishing touch.
ASSEMBLY
When building your board, start with one of your larger items as a focal point, place the items
in order of biggest to smallest. Meats can be sliced or folded or rolled up in individual tasting
sizes. Soft cheeses should be served with a spreader or butter knife. Hard cheeses can be sliced,
cubed, or served with a knife. The smaller items, such as bread slices, crackers and nuts should be
included in a couple different areas so that they are easily within reach for everyone. Mustards and
jams can be placed in small ramekins scattered around the board with spreaders nearby.
