The Word on the Street
haddonfield.today | 3
While some folk stay
out late on New Year’s Eve,
others hit the sack early.
How do you typically celebrate,
and what are your plans for
this December 31?
CLARISSA
O’CONNOR, of
Haddonfield, plans
on “staying in for an
exciting night full of
sushi and relaxing,
after the holidays
with the family.”
Philadelphia’s
JOHN PONTREE
has to work the first
half of the day. “But
after that I’ll be on
a bus to New York
City to watch the ball
drop.”
“I might go out for
a little bit,” says
GABRIELLA GRECO
of Philadelphia. “But
I’ll end my night at
home, curled up and
sharing a New Year’s
kiss with my lovely
feline friend.”
BEN SANTORO,
who owns Richard
Bennett Clothing for
Men in Haddonfield,
will be having dinner
“with some dear
friends from back in
the day. I’m looking
forward to seeing
them very much.”
CLAIRE
RAMPULLA hails
from Staten Island.
“I’ll be hanging
out for a little bit,”
she says, “having
ice cream and
waffles.” Then she’ll
“check out what’s
happening in the
City, and maybe try
to crash a party or
two.”
Collingswood’s
CHARLIE IHLE
hopes to “hit the bar
with some friends for
a good night out.” He
also hopes to get a
New Year’s kiss from
“someone special.”

HADDONFIELD POST 38
Our Centennial Year was a Great Success!
2019 was a big year for The American Legion and for Haddonfield Post 38. We
celebrated our centenary!
Nationally, the Legion focused not only on its founding, in Paris in the aftermath of
the Great War, but also on its extraordinary range of accomplishments during the ten
decades since. The basis for its mission? The FOUR PILLARS of service: Veterans
Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth.
In June 1919, a group of Haddonfield veterans petitioned the new national body to
charter a post in Haddonfield. (More than 300 local men and women had served in
the armed forces during the war.) A temporary charter was issued on JULY 23, 1919,
designating Haddonfield Post 38 in New Jersey.
This year, we enjoyed each other’s company at our STEAK DINNER MEETING in
January, the ANNUAL PICNIC in August, and the HAM & SWEET POTATO DINNER
in October. The LAST MAN’S DINNER in April provided not only an opportunity to
“eat, drink, and be merry” (as the Charter commands), but also to “pay fitting tribute
to our departed comrades” (ditto). As usual, it was very well attended.
We placed AMERICAN FLAGS on veterans’ graves in Haddonfield cemeteries
in advance of Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Members visited the Middle School
in November to share PERSONAL EXPERIENCES with students, and explain why
“Freedom is not Free.” We organized the PARADE and SERVICE on Memorial Day,
and sponsored a REMEMBRANCE PROGRAM at the High School on Veterans Day.
In May, the 5K RUN & 1-MILE WALK raised more than $15,000 for Veterans
Haven South, a transitional housing program for homeless veterans. The Post
sent 19 high school students to Boys State and Girls State in June, enabling them
to learn how state and federal governments work, and about the privileges and
responsibilities of citizenship. The annual COLORING CONTEST for Middle School
students also focused on themes related to Americanism.
Members provided a color guard for FLAG DAY,
proudly led the INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
on July 4, and distributed flags at those events and
during FALL FESTIVAL. In November, the Borough
Commissioners honored Post 38 with a proclamation
to recognize WORLD WAR II VETERANS
REMEMBRANCE MONTH. We wrapped up the
Centennial Year on December 21, at the RONALD
BOND DUALS wrestling tournament at HMHS.
Mission accomplished. “BREAK RANKS!”
Tom Reilly and Al Peak received the
Borough’s WWII proclamation.
● Post 38 meets on the second Monday of each month at 129 Veterans Lane, Haddonfield. All honorably discharged
and current members of the U.S. Armed Forces are welcome. To learn more about the Post, membership, and
programs, please visit www.HaddonfieldPost38.org.

NJ MONTHLY MAGAZINE
“ONE OF THE TOP THREE
MENSWEAR STORES”
IN NEWJERSEY.
’Twas the week before Christmas
... and all through the store,
The shoppers were searching for one present more.
The sweaters were stacked in their neat little rows,
Soon to be put into boxes, with bows.
The sport coats and trousers were lined up with glee,
All set to be bought and placed under the tree.
The ties showed their colors, each one looked so smart.
“I’d be a great gift!” I heard one impart.
The sales staff was tired. They’d been working like mad,
Picking out gifts to make everyone glad.
They tried to make sure each selection was right.
Then they wrapped every gift to look shiny and bright.
They gathered their strength, and with one week to go,
Extended their hours for late shopping – Ho! Ho!
We’ll be open each weekday from 10 until ?*
And weekends ’til 5.
So from all of us here, we wish you good cheer.

TWO KEY QUESTIONS:
1. Are you age 70-1/2 or older?
2. Do you have an IRA or 401k?
If “yes,” you probably need to take a
Required Minimum Distribution
(“RMD”) before December 31.
I can help you with that.

Course: History of modern wine
Haddonfield Public Library will offer a six-week
course, “The World History of Modern Wine,” Thu
Jan 16 thru Feb 20, from 1:30 to 3pm.
This course was first offered by Trinity University
online. Attendees will meet, watch the course
videos, and discuss the readings. Each module
includes short video lectures, guided readings, and
primary sources.
The course explores the growth of global wine
production and trade over the past three centuries.
You will explore key themes in wine history and
learn about the methods and resources that
historians use to understand the past.
The course is designed for both wine-lovers who
want to know more about their favorite beverage,
and for history-lovers who are curious about the
growing field of commodity history.
Topics include the “old” and “new” worlds of
wine, the changing nature of taste, and innovations
in wine quality. You will discuss the historical
development of appellation systems to classify
wine, as well as the importance of global trade in
creating the world’s distinctive wine regions.
Students will be given the tools and skills to
start researching the histories of their own favorite
wines. To register, scan the QR code n, or go to
haddonfieldlibrary.org. If you have questions, email
cdecampli@haddonfieldlibrary.org.
