From the masterMore than 2000 alumni have made a gift to the Campaign;and nothing could speak more eloquently of the loyalty andgenerosity of our Members.As of today (the middle of November), we haveraised over £23m; and, as I said last year, one ofthe most gratifying things is that this comes fromsuch a wide range of supporters. More than 2,000 alumnihave made a gift to the Campaign, and nothing couldspeak more eloquently of the loyalty and generosity of ourMembers. We continue to have one of the highest rates ofalumni support of any Oxbridge college, and the enthusiasmshown at all our reunion events, in the UK and worldwide,is immensely heartening. As before, the work of theCampaign Board has been wonderful, and the DevelopmentDirector and her team set a standard of imagination andcommitment that would be the envy of any institution.The new Library building is on schedule so far, and – fingerscrossed for not too wet a winter! – should be completedin good time for our official opening next September. Ourexpectations of the building’s quality have certainly beenmet, and those who have seen what there is to see on siteare all agreed that the scale and style are just what we hadhoped. As noted last time, we are beginning now to lookat the next phase – the repurposing of the former CollegeLibrary space in the Pepys Building and the consequent workto bring the fabric of the whole building up to contemporarystandards. Inevitably, there have been quite a lot of repairsover the years that have been done in a somewhat ad hocway, and we need now to tidy things up and equip thisgreat, iconic structure for the next few centuries.Our work to raise funds for bursaries has also borneimpressive fruit this year. We continue to do well in ouradmissions of students from ‘non-traditional’ backgrounds,those who may be the first generation of their familiesto go into higher education, young people from minoritygroups and so on. The message is clearly getting out therethat Magdalene not only offers a welcome to able studentsof all backgrounds, but will do everything to make theirstudies here practically possible in terms of direct support.Our outreach and admissions teams have once againworked hard and effectively to achieve this, and we are allin their debt.This will, sadly, be my last letter as Master – and I am verypleased indeed that Sir Christopher Greenwood, one ofour most distinguished alumni, will be replacing me nextautumn. But this is an opportunity for me to say what areal privilege and pleasure it has been to be part of theMagdalene family during these active and exciting years,during which the College has really stretched its wings –thanks to the hard work of so many in and beyond theGoverning Body, and thanks not least to those studentswho have given their own time and energy in outreachevents, in the telephone campaign and simply in welcomingnewcomers to the College. If they believe this communityis worth so much work and faithfulness, we are doingwhat we most want to do – motivating our membersto make a positive difference in society, creating a livelyfamily of conversation and learning, building lifelong habitsand commitments that will keep our society questioningand intelligent. Jane and I will miss Magdalene sorely, butwe’ll look back on these years as a time of fulfilment andfriendship.
