Giving to the CollegeThe third year of the Campaign has continued with a prodigious level of supportand generosity which has resulted in, yet again, an incredible total of £5,135,000in gifts received in cash and pledges during the financial year 2018–19.As we reach the halfway point of the FutureFoundations Campaign we are humbled by theoverwhelming response we have received fromour Members and Friends; thank you! The support fromthe Magdalene community around the world is bringing ustowards the combined goals of the Campaign and is alreadymaking a tangible difference to both our students and theCollege itself.The new Library buildingWe were delighted that the three generations of the Crippsfamily were present at a small groundbreaking ceremony inSeptember 2018. The new Library building is progressingrapidly and we are really beginning to get a sense of howimpressive it will be when it is completed. The light and airybuilding will offer much needed facilities for study, archivalstorage and research, doubling the number of student workspaces, books, and providing several more seminar rooms. Thenew ‘Robert Cripps’ Art Gallery will be on the ground floorwith several floor to ceiling double doors opening directlyonto the Fellows’ Garden. All in all, the new Library buildingwill make a wonderful new addition to the College estate.Support for studentsThe College’s commitment to needs-blind education, thebelief that no student able to study at Magdalene should bedeterred by financial reasons, has been generouslyand consistently supported by our Members. TheMagdalene Enhanced Bursary scheme which provides agenerous additional top up to the Cambridge BursaryScheme is now in its seventh year of operation thanksto your donations. This scheme ensures that everyundergraduate at Magdalene is not only able to meet theday-to-day living costs but also able to participate fully inthe ‘Cambridge’ experience.Phase IIThe building work for the new Library building is due tobe completed next June. The College Library, currentlylocated on the ground floor of the Pepys Building, willmove into its new home over the summer and we alllook forward to the opening of the new building inSeptember 2020. We will then look to the second partof the Future Foundations Campaign, Phase II, which willfocus on the restoration and reconfiguration of the iconicPepys Building. This important project will not only focuson a careful and sympathetic restoration of an importantheritage building but also enable the College to make thebuilding and its treasures much more accessible. We arelooking to create much needed additional public rooms,space for visitors and exhibits, and dedicated area forresearchers which is currently lacking.
