MAP IT VILAS COUNTY
Exploring the beautiful forests of the Northwoods couldn’t be
easier or more rewarding. In Vilas County, we have not only
created hundreds of miles of forest trails, we’ve also launched
a free app that will help you discover the trail that’s perfect for
you. The Map It Vilas County trails app is unlike any other—it
uses GPS mapping technology to help silent and motorsport
enthusiasts navigate our vast forests. Discover trails for a
variety of activities—the app includes nearly 90 trail maps
for ATVing/UTVing, biking, birdwatching, cross-country skiing,
equestrian, hiking, hunting, off-highway motorcycling, paddling,
snowmobiling, snowshoeing and swimming.
MAPPING AN ADVENTURE
Once you’ve downloaded the app (available at trails.vilas.org,
or in the Google apps and iPhone app stores), the keys to
exploring Vilas County are in your pocket. Here are some of
the places you can discover.
PRISTINE SNOWSHOEING NEAR PHELPS
South of Phelps in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National
Forest, you’ll find the Deerskin Snowshoe Trails. Adventurous
trekkers will be rewarded with a true wilderness experience—
the app will get you to the trailhead and lead you to wild
trails along the Deerskin River.

OFF-HIGHWAY MOTORCYCLING NEAR CONOVER
If you’re a rider who likes to get a little dirt on your tires,
you’ll find 15 miles of great riding on the Tamarack
Off-Highway Motorcycle Trail. Look for information in the app
under Landover DualSporter’s Club Trails.
HISTORIC SNOWMOBILING NEAR SAYNER-STAR LAKE
Sayner-Star Lake is the birthplace of the snowmobile, and
the Sayner-Star Lake Barnstormers have been grooming trails
here for 50 years. The app will help you find Trail 51, a forest
route that’s one of the state’s oldest snowmobile trails.
ATV adventures
Vilas County has miles of ATV/UTV routes, including
some easy-riding routes and trails in Conover, Phelps,
Land O’ Lakes, St. Germain, Eagle River and the
Minocqua Area. Conditions permitting, these routes
usually open from mid-May to the end of October,
connecting to other area trails and routes to the east
and west. The routes and trails are marked, so you’ll
have no trouble getting around.
