Putting education at the heart of
community nursing
By Claire Stanier,
Practice Education Lead
We are all very excited to be in our
new roles as part of the practice
education team for the district
nursing service.
The team started functioning from 1
October and includes practice education
leads, Pamela While and Susan Knight
and Andrew Churm, Practice Education
Digital Lead.
My role and that of Susan and Pamela’s
involves working with the district
nursing teams and colleagues at all
levels including nurse associates, trainee
nurse associates, student nurses and
our new clinical leads. Some of the new
clinical lead roles will be developed into
specialist roles, focussing on areas such
as tissue viability, continence, palliative
care and diabetes.
We have identified a number of priorities
to help us support local teams. These
priorities include:
• Developing and improving
competency frameworks to
include all current skills used in
the district nursing service.
These new frameworks will be
for all bands of staff and we
will also be looking at the skill
mix within the district nursing
teams.
Andy Churm is the new practice education
digital lead
• Looking at how we can make
improvements to how colleagues
access mandatory, compliance and
personal development training.
• Supporting the existing workforce
to develop to a higher band and
recognise their training
requirements. We will be
scheduling forums to support
new colleagues in their roles.
• Supporting teams to up-skill
colleagues that are new, whether
PRIMARY CARE, COMMUNITIES
AND THERAPIES
they are newly qualified or new to
working in the community.
• Encouraging and motivating
student nurses to consider a career
in district nursing. We will be
compiling a booklet to support
their learning in placement.
Andrew Churm is our new digital lead and
his role involves working with new starters
to ensure they are sufficiently trained on
SystmOne and how to access our files and
systems via mobile working. Andrew is also
looking at how we can improve SystmOne
to include care plans and making the
system more intuitive and easy to use. He
is further exploring how colleagues can use
SystmOne to monitor KPIs and carry out
audits.
We are dedicated to improving our service;
focus on patient centred holistic care
and helping colleagues develop in their
roles and future career aspirations. We
would very much welcome any ideas or
suggestions of anything you feel we could
support or help with.
