weLearn – Innovation and
improvement from around the Trust
This month saw the finalists of
our annual weLearn QIHD poster
competition come together to share
and showcase their shortlisted posters,
all to be crowned the winner and
get their hands on the grand prize of
£5,000.
From 70 posters submitted, 13 shortlisted
finalists had the opportunity to present
their poster to an audience of their peers
and judges, highlighting how their work
shows good practice, provide quality
improvements, supports innovation,
research or partnership working, and
most importantly how it has resulted in
improvements for patients, relatives and
colleagues.
After almost 500 votes from colleagues
were cast, and weeks of scrutiny under the
watchful eye of our judging panel. This was
made up of:
bated breath to hear the results.
Barlow who awarded it to Dr Aftab Fazal
and Dr Naveed Asif for their innovative
approach to developing a new referral
pathway for suspected cancer patients who
present at ED. Presenting the award, Rachel
highlighted how the work had transformed
the pathway for patients who present with
suspected cancer and provided clinical
teams with a referral system they could rely
on to safely progress patients onwards.
Announcing the highly commended runners
up fell to Mick Laverty who awarded Emma
Hibbs for her poster titled ‘Frailty at the
front door’ which highlighted the hard
work of the rapid response therapy service
in supporting frail patients who present
to ED, ensuring that they can provide care
and support at an early stage and reducing
length of stay.
The last highly commended award was
presented by Dr Paramjit Marok to the
paediatric allergy service for their poster
entitled, ‘Nasal Photo Therapy for Difficult
to Manage Perennial and Seasonal Allergic
Rhinitis from a patient and nursing
perspective’.
The winner of the £5,000 grand prize
was announced by Chief Executive, Toby
Lewis and went to Martin Chadderton
for his poster, ‘Using PDSA to improve
sepsis screening’. Announcing the award
one quality priority and this poster shows
how we have used the Plan, Do Study Act
principles to transform our sepsis screening
and ultimately improve patient care.”
