THREE things to
watch in early 2020
1. Basketball
Jhei-R Jones
(above) and the LW
East boys team is
talented enough
to have a strong
second half of the
season. The Griffins
girls also have a
group capable of big
things.
2. Wrestling
LW East has some
strong individuals
as AJ Lizak and
Jake LaMonto have
performed well in
recent tournaments.
3. LW co-op gymnastics
team looks for
Last season, Lincoln-
Way East was the beast
of the Lincoln-Way Cup,
winning both the boys and
girls championships at the
annual bowling event that
is held the Saturday before
Christmas between all the
Lincoln-Way schools
In fact, last year there
was drama galore, especially
on the boys side, where
East rallied to edge West by
seven pins at the end.
There was no repeating
for the Griffins this year as
Central won the boys tournament
and West captured
the girls championship Saturday,
Dec. 21, at Laraway
Lanes in New Lenox.
Central cruised to the
boys title with a 6,058 total
score. That included a high
game of 1,072. East (5,853)
was second, with a high of
1,031, and West (5,607)
was third with a high of
991.
The defending champion
Griffins were hanging
in there until Central
separated itself in the last
game. Still, East coach Dan
Galligan wasn't too disappointed.
"We really battled all
day to be in a position to
do something in the sixth
game," Galligan said. "I
was really happy with the
first five games. We just ran
out of gas at the end. Still,
to be in the position to win
another cup was great.
"This was our last Saturday
tournament of the
season. Now we will take
some time off to recharge
the batteries ahead of the
[SouthWest Suburban Conference
meet] on January
11 [at Orland Bowl]."
East senior Anthony Bria
was third overall individually.
He bowled a 1,223 total.
That included the high
game of the day, a 298 in
the fourth game.
"I've never had a 300,”
Bria said. “I had the front
11 and on the last shot, I
just let the ball go inside. It
was stressful, but fun to experience
at the same time.
"My previous high was
290 in a match at Stagg. I
was on it, I was ready. Still,
it was all getting to me at
the end. But I was still confident."
Nick Signore (1,220)
was right behind Bria and
was fourth overall on the
day. Luke Mittler (1,203)
placed sixth overall. Demitri
Przybylinski (1,135),
Anthony Gordon (933 in
five games), and Jason
Ganser (139 in a single
game) rounded out the East
lineup.
The Knights had the top
two bowlers in the tourney.
Those were seniors
Austin Zaker with a 1,374
total, and Alex Nolan with
Lincoln-Way East’s Anthony Bria just missed a perfect game at the Lincoln-Way Cup
on Saturday, Dec. 21, firing a 298 game. 22nd Century Media file photo
a 1,293 total.
"This is my best ever
score for a tournament,"
said Zaker, who had an excellent
229 average. "I just
kept throwing good balls,
kept throwing strikes. I just
want to keep encouraging
my teammates along the
way and it was fun to do as
a senior."
On the girls side, West
was the winner by over 500
pins. The Warriors came in
with a 5,453 total, with a
high-game of 979, and had
four of their bowlers medal
in the top five. Central
(4,942), which had a high
game of 865, was second
while East (4,709), with a
high of 870, placed third.
Kenzie Ullian not only
led West, but she also won
the individual title for the
second straight season. She
finished with a 1,185 total
while fellow senior Olivia
Daujatas (1,132) was second
overall in the tourney.
"I'm kind of glad to win
it my senior year," Kenzie
Ullian said. "It's nice to end
it with this and for the team
to win it my senior year. I'm
hoping we can all make it
to state as a team this season.
We've been growing
as a team We just all have
better communication this
season."
Not only did East win
the cup last December, but
it also advanced to the state
finals, placing 10th overall.
Graduation, however, hit
the Griffins hard.
"We are in the development
stage with a lot of
new people," East coach
Carlie Premo said. "We
graduated three starters and
four players from last year's
team. We have a lot of girls
that are being integrated
into the team who are doing
well. We have been doing
a little better and we have
time before the end of the
season to see how we are
improving."
Jayda Rivera (1,037) led
East and was sixth overall.
She tossed a high game
of 240. Katelyn Adamitis
(1,020) was right behind.
Sara Tripi (882) also
bowled all six games, while
Cameron Cichowicz (623),
Kaitlyn Marks (581), and
Daniella D'Averse (566) all
bowled four games apiece
for the Griffins.
Listen Up
“This is something I’ve always dreamed of. Just to have this moment become a
reality is really exciting to me.
