COMING ATTRACTIONS
Veteran’s Day Honored
Aliante Casino, Access Showroom
November 12, 7 p.m.
World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – ocially
ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919,
in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France.
However, ghting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice,
or temporary cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations and
Germany, went into
eect on the eleventh
hour of the eleventh
day of the eleventh
month. For that reason,
November 11, 1918,
is generally regarded
as the end of “the
war to end all wars.”
Department of Veterans
In America, the holiday now celebrates the approximate 2.9 million
U.S. veterans with parades and ceremonies, among other events.
Here at Sun City Aliante, we will celebrate this federal holiday on
Monday, November 12, at 7 p.m., in the Access Showroom at Aliante
The Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard will present the colors. They
are an elite group of professionals who exemplify the traditions
of the United States Air Force. They are one of the busiest Honor
Guards in the country, performing upwards of 1,100 details annually
in an area spanning 108,000 square miles, 16 counties and four
states. These include military and civilian ceremonies, as well as
other related functions, including color guards, funeral honors,
military cordons
for distinguished
visitors and ag
details for retreat
and retirement
ceremonies.
The Las Vegas
Brass Band is
the program’s
headliner
entertainment.
In the grand
tradition of British
brass bands, the
Las Vegas Brass Band is barely an infant. Though, in the western
United States its success is helping lead the way in expanding this
rich form of musical expression. This band is always in high demand
for patriotic events and celebrations around the valley. The Songsters
and Aliante Steppers will also participate in the program.
Join us Monday, November 12 for this complimentary event open to
all Sun City residents and your guests. Seating is limited, so please
HANUKKA CELEBRATION
Monday, December 10, 5:30 p.m.
Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is also known as the “Festival of Lights.” As the
name suggests, the entire festival is a celebration of the miraculous event
that occurred years ago at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The wicks of the
Menorah stayed lit for an amazing eight days at a stretch, although the
sacred oil in the temple was enough to light the wicks for only one day.
This is the reason why lights and lighted decors play such an important
part in the observation of the celebration. It is vital for the festive lights
to burn for at least half an hour after the sun sets.
Welcome the holiday season with the lighting of the Menorah; sing
along with Hanukkah songs, enjoy a performance by the SCAL Steppers
and Songsters and take pleasure in the traditional foods of Hanukkah.
Please sign up at the monitor’s desk by Thursday, December 6 before
noon. This event is sponsored SCAL Activities & Fitness Department.
CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING
Tuesday, December 11, 6 p.m.
One of the prettiest events is viewing a Christmas tree when it is lit up for
the rst time. The tradition of lighting the community Christmas tree is
an opportunity for all residents to come together to celebrate the season
and to share the message of peace. Holly and mistletoe, along with
Christmas trees decorated with tinsel, baubles, popcorn strings, candy
canes and electric lights.
Residents in attendance will sing Christmas carols and join in the tree
lighting ceremony. Welcome in the holiday season with the lighting of
the community Christmas tree, live music, caroling, performances by the
SCAL Songsters and SCAL Steppers, desserts and beverages. This event
will begin at 6 p.m. and is complimentary to the community. Special
guests will include Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. Sign up at the monitor’s
Mixed Pickleball event. Please take the time to stop Lois and ask her,
“Where is the GOLD?”
We are equally proud of Wayne Headrick for winning a Bronze Medal
in singles with a prestigious group of players in his category. Mike
Dobson took the Gold Medal in Men’s Doubles, 70-74, and Sally
Dobson came home with a Gold Medal in Women’s 60-64.
The Las Vegas/North Las Vegas Pickleball Players won 10 percent
of the overall medals and Sun City Aliante denitely helped those
results. Please come join us and learn Pickleball. It is great exercise,
lots of laughs and fun people!
Nancy Albers is a life-long singer
who came to Sun City Aliante
several years ago to be closer to
her daughter. She was born in
Waco, Texas, and began singing
at age ve in church variety
shows dressed as Shirley Temple.
Her mother coordinated those
shows, and Nancy was the
transition act, so the others could
get their costumes changed.
She sung in a variety of groups
from solos to large choirs. She was the Sweetheart of the VA Hospital
in Texas, while in her teens, and sang the “Yellow Rose of Texas” as
her theme song. When she married her husband, just a month after
their rst date, she knew she would be a traveling woman as he was
in the Air Force. During their rst 20 years of marriage, they moved
19 times and lived in several foreign countries. They nally put down
roots in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where her husband was a professor
at Southern Mississippi University.
Nancy really enjoys singing and telling a story through her songs.
She said, “In church, it’s like praying to sing the praises.” The
Songsters are lucky to have this octogenarian and her lovely voice in
the alto section of their choir.
The members of the Silver Needles and Threads Club presented
25 handmade quilts to Danielle Munao, Family Services Director of
the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada to be
distributed to needy, at-risk children from age newborn to teens.
The mission of the group is to provide support, education, hope
and advocacy through programs and services for children and
adolescents with cancer, their families and the professionals who
care for them.
