From the NCCIA Board of Directors
HATS OFF TO HALLOWEEN WINNERS
Wow! Board member Suzie Bredlau was left speechless by all the NC
homes that were seriously decked out for Halloween. She wants to send
a BIG shoutout to those who didn’t win but were still so very fantastic,
especially several of the winners from last year. “You guys are still rocking
it, but I needed to spread the love,” she said.
The 2019 winners for the Halloween Yard Contest were:
• 702 Herrick Ct.
• 1423 Sherfield Ridge
• 1019 Barkston
• 20234 Laurelock
• 20218 Kingscamp
Thanks again for your great participation!
FRIENDLY REMINDER ABOUT TRASH RULES AND PROCEDURES
We are lucky to have such a great service provider in Best Trash. It’s hard
to remember all the rules that govern trash pickup, so we thought a
reminder would be helpful. Here are some key highlights.
• If you use trash cans, they should be between 30-50 gallons in size.
• If you use trash bags, please limit the weight per bag to 40 pounds.
• Ten bags or bundles is the maximum you can put out at a time. 40
pounds is the max for each bundle and 4 feet is the maximum length.
These requirements prevent damage to Best Trash’s equipment.
• Tree branches and shrub and brush trimmings must be tied and bundled
and no branch diameter can exceed 3 inches.
• All wood, fence pickets and lumber need to be tied and bundled and
all nails must be hammered down or removed. They cannot collect fence
posts with concrete.
• They will pick up 1 room’s worth of carpet. Carpet and/or padding must
be rolled and tied in bundles and placed on the curb.
• They will pick up paint cans, but the paint must be dried out and the lids
must be removed.
• They will take furniture, but no more than two items per collection day.
If the furniture contains tile or ceramic material, they cannot take it.
• They will take mattresses and box springs of any size, but no more than
two each collection day.
• They will pick up refrigerators and freezers, but they must be drained
of freon first and a bill validating the Freon removal must be attached to
the item.
• They will take Christmas trees.
• These items are NOT allowed in our trash: dirt, construction debris,
waste generated by a private contractor (remodeling, landscaping),
rocks, motor oil, cooking oil, gasoline, bricks, tile, concrete, liquid paint,
fertilizer, chemicals and tires.
If you have a huge load to be picked up, please send an email to
customerservice@besttrashtexas.com and they will provide a quote
for removing your trash. Most of you know that trash is collected for all
sections of NC on Tuesdays and Fridays. For more detailed information
on trash and recycling, visit best-trash.com.
ARE YOU PAYING TOO MUCH IN TAXES?
Some homes in NC do not have homestead exemptions, which means
those homeowners are paying 20 percent more in taxes. Exemptions
are handled by the Harris County Appraisal District. For clarification, a
homestead exemption is granted for a primary residence, not for a rental
property. To file for an exemption, please go to hcad.org; the application
is on the Forms page under the Residential Exemption section. You may
also call 713-957-7800 with questions.
ODDS AND ENDS
Your annual HOA assessment was due on Dec. 31, 2019. Please pay it soon
to avoid late fees.. January is a great time to trim trees, as they are dormant.
Feel free to plant some too if you like. ~ NCCIA Board of Directors
We are asking parents that pick up their children at NCE not to block the
stop signs on Dominion on either side of Whittington while waiting for
school to dismiss. There is orange paint on the curbs in this area marking
the legal 30 foot distance from the stop signs. Additionally, we ask
that parents use Laverton as the main route to NCE if coming south on
Dominion. The alley behind Whittington shall not be used for a short cut,
as this is a private driveway and is for Whittington homeowners. Thank
you in advance for your cooperation. ~ Sgt. BJ Howard - Precinct 5
LOCAL DEVELOPER PLEDGES 3-YEAR CONTRIBUTION TO KATY ISD EDUCATION FOUNDATION
Cane Island, home to many parents, grandparents and increasing numbers of Katy ISD students, has joined the corps of Keystone Investors contributing
to the Katy ISD Education Foundation and its Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program. The Foundation’s Investor program allows the community,
both individuals and business leaders like Cane Island, to provide a sound financial platform for Foundation initiatives by committing to three years
or more of support.
Cane Island President Dan Naef joined the Katy ISD Education Foundation for 2019-2020 Inspiring Imagination teacher grant announcements. “It was
one of the most special experiences I’ve had in Katy,” Naef said, “To be present and witness the joy in a teacher’s eyes when they win a grant and to hear
the excitement in their voice, it’s priceless.” Cane Island doesn’t just build homes, it builds community. Naef said, “Nothing says community like taking
care of our children and taking care of the educators who pour into our children.”
The Katy ISD Education Foundation has awarded $1.6 million in its first seven years of Inspiring Imagination teacher grants, impacting students in
classrooms all around the district. Funding for the program is provided in part by long-term investors like Cane Island and annual fundraising events
Fireflies & Foodtrucks and GROOVE. To learn more, contact us at 281-396-6031 or visit www.katyisdeducationfoundation.org.
Junior High
LOCAL CHEERLEADER/DANCER TO PERFORM
IN THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE AT THE
WALT DISNEY WORLD® RESORT
Natalie Gendron from Memorial Parkway Junior High in Katy Texas is one
of more than 500 elementary, junior high and high school cheerleaders
and dancers from across the country that represented Varsity Spirit in
the 2019 Thanksgiving Tour at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando,
Florida.
The individuals invited to perform in the parade are part of a select group
of cheerleaders and dancers chosen as All-Americans during Varsity
Spirit summer camps across the country. All-Americans are selected via
tryout based on either superior cheerleading or dance skills at camps
operated by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), Universal Dance
Association (UDA), National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) or National
Dance Alliance (NDA). Only the top 10% of the cheerleaders and dancers
from Varsity Spirit camps earn the chance to march in a holiday parade
of this caliber.
Natalie performed with the Varsity Spirit All-Americans in a one-of-akind
pre-parade performance through Disney’s Magic Kingdom® Park
on Thanksgiving Day. Besides enjoying a sunny trip to Orlando, All-
Americans had the opportunity to meet cheerleaders and dancers from
across the nation and enjoy a magical holiday season at Walt Disney
World® Resort parks.
STILL ON THE FENCE ABOUT HOSTING AN
EXCHANGE STUDENT?
You don’t have any kids? Are you a single parent? Same sex couple? An
empty nester? This is not a problem, we place our students in all kinds of
families!
You’re not rich? Neither am I! Your exchange student comes with their
own spending money and health insurance. All you provide is room/
board and three meals a day. Oh and TLC…but that’s free. Live in the
middle of nowhere? Small town? Not a big deal. Some kids prefer to get
away from the hustle and bustle of big cities. The exchange students also
do pretty well in small schools, as they usually get to be the center of
attention and make friends rather quickly. Our students also get chances
to travel to New York, Washington DC, Hawaii and California…so they
can get their fill of the city life and return back to the peaceful sounds of
nature. Do you consider yourself a boring person? More than likely this
is not true and you should quit being so hard on yourself. Your student
will make friends. Your student will meet other exchange students. Your
student will attend activities offered by our program. Your student will
get involved in sports and school clubs. Your purpose is not to entertain
them. But you might find that you bring a little adventure to each others
lives. Kids are too young? Great! Lots of students love young kids and
your kids will love them. It’s beneficial to introduce your kids to new
cultures at a very young age. You’re preparing them to accept people no
matter what the religion, color of their skin or language they speak. That
my friend, is good parenting. Don’t hold back! This is a gret experience for
both parties. You get the opportunity to change a child’s life. You get the
satisfaction of seeing them grow, even after they leave your home into
becoming a doctor, a lawyer, a diplomat, artist, teacher…the list goes on.
And you contributed to that success! And the best part of it all, is you gain
another family member for life. We need people like you to give these
kids a chance.
STS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to place
exchange students in our area. If you are interest in hosting, please
contact me at 832-455-7881 or at vicki.stsfoundation@yahoo.com. I’ll be
happy to answer any question you might have and get you started on
hosting your very own student!
NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH
The American Red Cross urges people to share their good health and
resolve to give blood regularly, beginning in January with National
Blood Donor Month. Below are key messages that can be relayed to
donors while scheduling appointments.
• Extreme winter weather in some parts of the country and seasonal
illnesses often make it difficult for the American Red Cross to maintain a
sufficient blood supply at this time of year. Healthy individuals are urged
to give now.
• The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood donations every day
for patients in need.
• Do you know someone who has never donated before? Please encourage
them to make an appointment with you. Without more donors, patients
will not have the blood they need.
• Type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency
personnel reach for in trauma
situations when there isn’t time to determine a patient’s blood type.
• Type O positive is the most transfused blood type and can be transfused
to Rh-positive patients
of any blood type.
• Types A negative and B negative can be transfused to Rh-positive or
negative patients.
• Save time by using RapidPass® to complete your pre-donation reading
and health history online before you come to your appointment. Get
started at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or by
using the Blood Donor App.
• For detailed donor eligibility questions, please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-
800-733-2767) or
visit RedCrossBlood.org.
COMMON VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES
As we embark on the journey each day to eat and live better, take note of
the common vitamin nutrient deficiencies that are easily treated:
1. Calcium: Calcium is important for maintaining strong bones and
controlling muscle and nerve function. Signs of severely low calcium
include fatigue, muscle cramps, abnormal heart rhythms and a poor
appetite. Make sure you’re getting enough with at least three servings of
milk or yogurt a day. Other good sources of calcium are cheese, calciumfortified
orange juice and dark, leafy greens.
2. Vitamin D: This vitamin is also critical for bone health. Symptoms
of a vitamin D deficiency can be vague - fatigue and muscle aches or
weakness. If it goes on long term, a vitamin D deficiency can lead to
softening of the bones. To get enough vitamin D, have three servings
of fortified milk or yogurt daily eating fatty fish, such as salmon or tuna,
twice a week; and spend some time outside in the sunshine every day.
3. Potassium: Potassium helps the kidneys, heart and other organs
work properly. You could become low in potassium in the short term
because of diarrhea or vomiting, excessive sweating or antibiotics or
because of chronic conditions such as eating disorders and kidney
disease, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Symptoms of
a deficiency include weight loss, muscle weakness, constipation and in
severe cases, an abnormal heart rhythm. For natural potassium sources,
consume bananas, whole grains, milk, vegetables, beans and peas.
4. Iron: Iron helps your body make red blood cells. When iron levels get
too low, your body can’t effectively carry oxygen. The resulting anemia
can cause fatigue. You might also notice pale skin and dull, thin, sparse
hair. To boost iron levels, eat iron-fortified cereal, beef, oysters, beans
(especially white beans, chickpeas and kidney beans), lentils and spinach.
5. Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 aids the production of DNA and helps make
neurotransmitters in the brain. With an increasing number of vegans
and people who’ve had weight loss surgery, vitamin B12 deficiency is
becoming more common. Symptoms of severe B12 deficiency include
numbness in the legs, hands or feet; problems with walking and balance;
anemia; fatigue; weakness; a swollen, inflamed tongue; memory loss;
paranoia; and hallucinations. You can get vitamin B12 from animal
sources: eat more fish, chicken, milk and yogurt. If you’re vegan, opt for
vegan foods fortified with B12, such as non-dairy milk, meat substitutes
and breakfast cereals.
6. Folate: Folate or folic acid, is a particularly important vitamin for
women of childbearing age, which is why prenatal vitamins contain such
a hefty dose. A folate deficiency can cause a decrease in the total number
of cells and large red blood cells as well as neural tube defects in an
unborn child. Symptoms of a folate deficiency include fatigue, gray hair,
mouth ulcers, poor growth and a swollen tongue. To get folate from food,
go for fortified cereals, beans, lentils, leafy greens and oranges.
7. Magnesium: Magnesium helps support bone health and assists in
energy production. Magnesium deficiency can cause loss of appetite,
nausea and vomiting, fatigue and weakness. In more severe cases, it can
lead to numbness, muscle cramps, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms,
personality changes or low potassium or calcium levels. To help your
levels return to normal, eat more magnesium-rich foods, such as almonds,
cashews, peanuts, spinach, black beans and edamame.
Spaghetti Squash
You could make this on National Spaghetti Day January
4th! Everyone is trying to be a little healthier these days,
so instead of a pasta spaghetti, try using spaghetti
squash:
DIRECTIONS:
1. To start, cut your squash in half lengthwise. This is
definitely the hardest part of making spaghetti squash,
but with a sharp chef’s knife and some determination
you’ll do just fine.
2. Remove the seeds. Drizzle the cut sides with olive oil
and season with salt and pepper. Flip the squash cut-side
down on a baking sheet.
3. Pop it in a 400°F oven for 40 minutes. Depending on
the size of your squash, this could take more like an
hour. If 40 minutes have passed and you’re not sure if the
squash is ready, pull it out of the oven and drag the tines
of a fork on the cut side. If spaghetti-like strands easily
release from the skin, it’s ready. If not, continue baking
and check on it every 5 to 10 minutes. Over-roasting can
lead to soggier “spaghetti,” so it’s best to keep a close eye
on the squash.
4. Shred it! When it’s ready, let cool slightly before creating
“spaghetti” with your fork.
Top with spaghetti sauce or for an even healthier and
lower calorie option, go with a marinara sauce.
• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of
water than from lack of food.
• Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering.
• Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms.
• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and
old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into
heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate
and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before
planting.
• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete
fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six
inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal.
Water in.
• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze
damage to crown.
• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off
leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce
water for poinsettias.
• Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture.
• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers
open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will
be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed
manufacturer’s directions before spraying.
• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings
of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semishaded
until rooted.
• Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape.
Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs
before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape
myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting
unwanted canes out at base of plant.
• Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the
spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old
beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of
new beds for roses.
• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody
plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be
expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural
needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid
crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet
soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.
• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about
50% humus, including rotted manure.
• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender
plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature
rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but
remove when weather warms.
