Three Wonderful
Ways to Lose Weight
Do you think you would feel better
if you could shed a few pounds?
Are you concerned that your
weight is putting you at risk for
various health problems? Are you
ready to do something about it? If
so, the district is willing to help
you with the expense!
TOPS 6:30-7:30 PM
TOPS is the least expensive of the District
sponsored weight loss options. The
program is essentially the same as Weight
Watchers, but it does not involve purchase
and use of the Weight Watcher products.
School District employees may register for
the TOPS class at the Waukesha YMCA.
Please call the YMCA Business Office to
register, 262-542-2557.
New Participant: $40 Repeat Registrant:
$25
Weight Watchers Group
This group meets at Lowell School on
Tuesdays. “Weigh in” is at 3:30pm
followed by group meeting at 4:00pm. This
group has shown the greatest overall
success. The district reimburses employees
$50 of their total fees required for each 3
month session.
The District does not reimburse employees
for participation in other Weight Watcher
groups because reimbursement is tied to
accountability confirmation of attendance
at meetings. It would be very challenging
for our small wellness staff to communicate
and collect attendance with multiple groups
throughout the Milwaukee area. Contact
Katie Curtis mcurtis@waukesha.k12.wi.us at
Lowell School if interested in joining Lowell’s
group.
In addition, United Health Care has
partnered with Weight Watchers wellness to
offer UHC members a discounted price for
membership in any Weight Watchers group.
The initial 3 month price of $65 drops to $55
and the ongoing price decreases slightly as
well. Call WW wellness # 1-866-933-902 to
obtain the UHC wellness/WW partnership
code for our staff.
Weight Watchers Online
In 2012-13 the WW online group will “meet”
electronically through a resource called
“bb9” (Blackboard 9). Access to this bb9
class will be limited to District WW online
group members only. Group members will
use bb9 to post their weekly “weigh-in”
progress. That is, they will protect each
other’s dignity by posting “losing, gaining, or
holding” rather than actual weights. They
will be able to share recipes, ideas about
weight loss APP’s, encouragement, and
celebrations similar to a face-to-face group
meeting.
The District will reimburse participants $50
toward the cost of three month sessions in
online Weight Watchers for those agreeing
to regular “visits” to/with their bb9 Weight
Watchers online group.
Contact Kelly Motl at
kmotl@waukesha.k12.wi.us for details.
Strive to Thrive
Think you’re doing everything right with your diet, but still not
dropping any pounds? One of the dieting obstacles below might
be to blame. Avoid these five weight-loss roadblocks on the
path to a healthier you:
Stress: When you’re stressed out, your body releases a
hormone that causes you to crave fatty, sugary foods. Avoid
stress and you might be able to resist dessert.
Unhealthy “healthy” foods: Labels such as “all natural” and
“fat-free” can be misleading and may not tell the whole story.
Make sure you check the nutritional facts to see exactly what
you’re eating.
Not enough sleep: Too little time spent asleep may keep your
body from producing hormones that regulate your appetite,
causing you to overeat. To keep your diet on track, make sure
you’re getting at least six to eight hours of sleep each night.
Five Weight-loss Roadblocks
Missing a workout: We all know missing a workout means
burning fewer calories, but new research shows that people who
skip the gym are more likely to give in to temptation when it
comes to their diet.
Eating out: Most restaurants are concerned with how your food
tastes, not your waistline. Because restaurant foods tend to
have more calories, sodium and fat, consider cooking more
meals at home when trying to shed a few pounds.
A fun day was had by all! These women raced through
fire, crawled under barbed wire and sloshed through mud
pits as a team. Way to go!
