President of the AYCF, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, in a statement in Abuja, yesterday, expressed support for Amotekun and urged Nigerians to disregard the insinuations on the social media that he and his group were against the inauguration of the security agency in Yorubaland. According to him, the inauguration of Amotekun is commendable, as it will complement the efforts of the Federal Government to secure lives and property in the country. Commissioner of Gender and Vulnerable Groups, Imo, during the donation of relief materials to flood victims in Imo State by SEPLAT in Owerri, Imo State AMOTEKUN: Arewa youths disown northern critics By Prince Osuagwu he Attorney General Tof the Federation, AGF, Justice Abubakar Malami has explained that withdrawal of the demand for MTN Nigeria, to refund N242.24 billion and $1.28 billion allegedly owed by MTN as revenue to the federal government of Nigeria, was to give the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS and Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, the opportunity to resolve the issue amicably. The AGF said the matter has been referred to the two government agencies for resolution. MTN Nigeria yesterday reported that its legal counsel received a letter dated 8 January 2020 from the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, AGF, formally withdrawing his demand for N242,244,452,215.97 and USD$1,283,610,357.86 alleged revenue indebtedness. The feud began September 10, 2018 when the AGF alleged that MTN was owing $2billion in tax arrears. The demand, according to Malami, was for a 10-year period on import duties, Value Added Tax (VAT) and withholding taxes on foreign imports/payments. However, MTN denied any wrong doing saying it did not owe outstanding taxes. It sued the Nigerian government at the Federal High Court, Lagos, seeking damages and challenging the powers of the “I am an advocate of community policing. If I now come out to condemn the inauguration of ‘Amotekun’ in the South- West, that will be counterproductive’’ , the statement T he Nigerian Army yesterday said troops have cleared Boko Haram terrorists’ hideouts, rescueing five captives including an octogenarian, three women and a minor across Borno State in the past few days. The Nigerian Army Operations Media Coordinator, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday that troops of 121 Battalion deployed at Pulka in Gwoza Local Government Area, captured and destroyed the terrorists’ hideout at Zeledva Hills along Pulka – said. “So, I commend the initiative and I will encourage citizens to cooperate with the system to ensure effective operations, which certainly will bring about secured society.” He urged the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) to come up with a similar p r o g r a m m e constitutionallyrecognised to protect the Troops clear Boko Haram enclaves, rescue five in Borno Bokko – Ngoshe Road on Wednesday. More elements of the Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgents, bandits and other criminal elements have either been neutralised or arrested at their hideouts across the country and more of their abductees have been freed. “On 7 Jan for instance, troops of 121 Battalion deployed at Pulka in Gwoza LGA of Borno State while on ‘Operation RUFE KOFA’ cleared and destroyed Boko Haram criminals’ hideouts at Zeledva Hills along Pulka – Bokko – Ngoshe Road in Why Attorney General withdrew case against MTN AGF to deal with tax matters. The case was to come up for hearing on January 30 and 31, this year. MTN said the letter confirmed that following careful review and due consultation with relevant statutory agencies, the AGF decided to refer the matter to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) with a view to resolving contentious issues. CEO, MTN Nigeria, Ferdi Moolman said that following the new development, his company will consequently follow due court process to withdraw its legal action against the AGF and engage with the FIRS and NCS on the issues. He promised that MTN Nigeria will remain committed to conducting its business in accordance with applicable laws in Nigeria. He said: ‘’we are very pleased with the decision of the AGF and we commend him for his wisdom. We maintain our dedication to building and maintaining cordial relationships with all regulatory authorities in Nigeria and remain fully committed to meeting our fiscal responsibilities and contributing to the social and economic development of Nigeria.” IPoB backs S/West security outfit •Berates Igbo leaders for opposing BSS By Chimaobi Nwaiwu he Indigenous People of TBiafra, IPoB, has backed the South-West governors, elders, politicians, and stakeholders for what it called their courage to protect their people and their region with the launch of Operation Amotekun. IPoB also berated South- East governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo and Igbo politicians who kicked against the formation of Biafra Security Service, BSS, in 2017. A statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Emma Powerful, expressed surprise that Igbo leaders commended South-West governors for establishing the security outfit. The statement reads: “We believe the time has come for all those who ignorantly questioned the modus operandi of IPoB and the vision of Biafra liberation as boldly preached by our leader to tender an unreserved public apology. “History and events have continued to vindicate IPoB and its methods. The time has come for every sensible person and ethnic group to swallow their shame and publicly acknowledge that IPoB is always right. “The global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, ably led by our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, commends the South West governors, elders, politicians, and stakeholders for their the same LGA.” He added that the combined troops of 192 Battalion deployed at Gwoza, Theatre Strike Force (TSF) and Cameroonian Defence Force in conjunction with Civilian Joint Task Force and Local Hunters ascended the Ungwan-Gara-Kwatara mountain enclave of the terrorists. According to him, on sighting the troops, the criminals fled the enclave in disarray, while the resilient troops went ahead to clear the hideout of any presence and activities of the insurgents. “In the process, the troops rescue 5 abandoned captives including one septuagenarian, three women and one minor. “In a similar operation conducted by troops of 21 Special Armoured Brigade deployed at Bama on Jan. 9, recovered a mutilated body parts of a neutralized B/ Haram criminal from an earlier encounter and one AK 47 Rifle magazine. “On Jan. 8, troops of 112 Task Force Battalion deployed in Mafa Local Government Area, decimated some Boko Haram criminals and captured one AK 47 Rifle and a bandolier of 7.62mm NATO ammunition. “Other items recovered are four AK 47 magazines loaded with 120 rounds of 7.62mm doggedness and courage to protect their people and their region against herdsmen. “This is not the first time in recent weeks that our leader’s position and approach have been vindicated by events and utterances from other ethnic groups within Nigeria. The inescapable truth remains that Bishop Matthew Kukah’s commendable utterances about the intent of the present administration in Nigeria and formation of a Yoruba vigilante group, are all lines of reasoning consistently canvassed by IPoB in the past. “IPOB wholeheartedly welcomes Amotekun and says good morning to those who out of ignorance, poor sense of vision, lack of reasoning and jealousy fought against the formation BSS. They should cover their faces in shame. North. According to him, it is a good thing that even the North-West governors are already thinking along that direction. Special ammunition while others were believed to have escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds. “In another daring encounter with some B/Haram criminals on Jan. 6, troops of 22 Brigade (Main) deployed in Dikwa area of the state rescued one Mr Ibrahim who was earlier abducted by the criminals,” he said. Iliyasu further disclosed that the troops of 17 Brigade deployed at Tashan Bawa, Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina State engaged bandits with superior fire power and eliminated many of the bandits. He added that other bandits fled into the nearby Madaci – Birnin Gwari Forest with various degrees of gunshot wounds. According to him, troops thereafter intensified the conduct of robust patrols in the general area to obviate further respite for the bandits. “Furthermore, on Jan. 10, troops of 8 Division acting on reliable information intercepted a group of bandits moving with rustled cattle towards Miyanchi in Maru Local Government Area of Sokoto State. “Troops made contact with the bandits at Kadauri and Miyanchi Bridge of the same LGA leading to killing of three bandits. “Additionally, 2 AK 47 Rifles, 7 AK 47 Rifle magazines loaded with 210 rounds of 7.62mm Special A-Court upholds Lyon as Bayelsa APC governorship candidate By Davies Iheamnachor A Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt has voided the ruling of a lower court which annulled the candidature of David Lyon as the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Bayelsa State. The court, in three separate judgements delivered by Justice Isaiah Olufemi, Justice Cordelia Jumbo-Ofo and Justice Abubakar Lamido, upheld the nomination and candidature of Lyon. Delivering its unanimous judgment in the first appeal on FHC/YNG/CS/ 100/2019, brought by Lyon, Olufemi held that the lower court erred to have entertained the matter, knowing that matters of such nature were status barred. He noted that the position of the law was that in election matters, time is of essence, saying the process of approaching the court for redress did not start early. Olufemi noted that the aggrieved party, Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, should have approached the court within 14 days after the actions that affected him were carried out, adding that the filing of the matter on the 15th day after the event made it invalid.
