HSE590: HSE Management System
This course provides an introduction to the management systems and quality-assurance
methods used to enhance operational and compliance effectiveness in Health, Safety and
Environmental departments and programs in accordance to ISO 14000 and ISO 45001 and
related quality-management approaches.
The student will understand the translation of corporate Health, Safety and Environmental
Policy into viable operational functions. The student will be able to communicate Health,
Safety and Environmental projects to management in a business format through
understanding of cost, budget and return- on-investment considerations.
Learning Outcomes:-
1. Explain the development of occupational safety and health worldwide.
2. Evaluate laws, standards, and best practices related to health, safety and environment.
3. Formulate effective health, safety and environmental management initiatives and
strategies that mitigate occupational injuries and illnesses.
4. Identify the types of leading and lagging health, safety and environmental performance
indicators
5. State Health, safety, and environmental management and audit systems components and
requirements (e.g., ISO 14000, 45001, 19011, ANSI Z10)
6. Identify the applicable requirements for plans, systems, and policies (e.g., safety, health,
environmental, fire, and emergency action)
7. Compare management systems with benchmarks and conduct causal factors analyses
8. Develop, implement, and sustain environmental, safety, and health management
systems then perform gap analyses
HSE591: HSE Culture and Leadership
This course focuses on behavior-based safety management practices. Effective HSE
management involves the collective support of the corporate structure and employees.
Management issues involve employee motivation, company culture and hazard recognition
and prevention.
This course addresses the essential strategies for understanding and managing an
organization and its human resources in the area of HSE administration with examples of the
strategic direction and management leadership of successful companies and also discusses
the fit of corporate strategy to the organizational type, level and culture, and the employee
culture.
