News from Christ Church C.E. Primary SchoolPreparing, Sowing, GrowingWhat was your favourite book as a child? Last month we started off the New Year with some staff training onhow to develop ‘reading for pleasure’. The greatest indicator that a child will succeed and fulfil theirpotential in GCSEs, A’ levels etc is if they choose to read. It is a more important factor than parental income,background, teachers etc. How do we encourage children to read more? It is easy to be pessimistic and saythat with gaming – playstations etc. and children watching Youtube, that reading is less likely. Howeverwhilst screen time and how to manage this as a parent can be a challenge, there has also been a realincrease in the quality and breadth of children’s literature. Walk around a local bookshop and you will seehow many new books for children and young adults are being published.We are really lucky in Shropshire that the Council stillfund a School Library Service and each term we havehundreds of great quality books, both fiction andrelated to our class topics. The children love delvinginto the boxes and choosing new books forthemselves. Our Year 6s went on a visit last term andwere amazed – there are tens of thousands of qualitybooks at the Shire Hall base and they really enjoyedchoosing for themselves.At our training day we read some research which saidthat ‘The most important thing a teacher can do is toread aloud.’ We could not agree more – and wehave all made a 2020 resolution to read more to our classes.Acorns: Year R and Year 1 - theme is ‘Space and Transport’ taught by Mrs Martin.Holly: Year 2 and Year 3- theme is ‘Egyptians’ taught by Mr Kennedy and Mrs Cansdale.Willow: Year 4 and Year 5 theme is ‘Romans’ taught by Mrs Douch.Oak: Year 6 theme is ‘Greeks’ taught by Mrs ClarkeAcorns work closely with Childrensworld, the on-site nursery (“Outstanding” – Ofsted). They work togetheron a Wednesday morning, during ‘Stay and Play’ and Childrensworld come and use our school hall for danceand join us for some assemblies and special events. Childrensworld also offer wrap around care for schoolchildren 8am-6pm and in the holidays.If you would like to know more about the school, or visit for a look around, please phone the School Officeon 01952 510383. Don’t wait for an Open Day – we are always happy to show people around if you have ayounger child, are moving into the area or considering a school change. We are the catchment area schoolfor Cressage, Cross Houses, Cound, Coundmoor, Harley and Eaton Constantine but also welcome childrenattending from other villages.
