Global Health ProjectsCrossing Borders/amsacrossingbordersAMSA Crossing Borders is the Australian branch of Crossing Borders for Health, an internationallyestablished network of medical students who aim to help remove barriers to healthcare forrefugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants.Highlights from 2019 include AMSA members being present at Palm Sunday Rallies in all majorcities under the united message of “Detention Harms Health.” As well, our open letter in support ofthe Medevac legislation reached more than 1,500 signatures and drew attention of the MJA anda tweet from Dr Karen Phelps herself.We look forward to continuing advocacy for the cessation of offshore processing practices inAustralia and engaging students at both local and national levels through education about andadvocacy for refugee and asylum seeker health. Code GreenIn the matter of less than a couple years, thepublic’s perception of Climate Change hasshifted from being a cause to be mildly investedin to one of the biggest global threats humanswill have to face in the near future. As medicalprofessionals of the future, we cannot ignorethe devastating impact that this could have andalready has on the health of our patients.AMSA Code Green is an Australia-wide platformfor medical students that advocates for themitigation of the causes of climate change andthe adaption of our health care systems to meetthe changing health demands caused by climatechange. We see climate change not as someimpending doom, but as an actionable healthcarepriority to meaningfully improve healthoutcomes for all communities.In 2019, Code Green’s work included:» Divestment Guide, a document detailing howto reorganise your investments so that theydo not directly or indirectly fund fossil fuelsand/or environmentally damaging industries;» Election Campaign, to encourage the publicto prioritise climate change and makinginformed decisions when voting;» Finalising the Sustainable Events Guide toprovide guidance as to how not to contributeto climate change while organising events;» Increasing engagement for the ClimateStrike and organising meet-ups for medicalstudents to attend.This year we would like to focus on thefollowing:» Finalise the Divestment Guide and publish it;» Greening Hospitals, a project that will aimto make hospitals and health care settingsmore sustainable;» Focus on Medical Education, by developinga number of educational resources andrelevant material that is easily accessible forthose interested in learning about the healthimpacts of climate change.
