PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
WELCOME
TO
AMSA!
Thank you for picking up the 2024 edition of the Orange Guide - a guided tour to your peak
representative body that connects, informs and represents all 18,500 medical students at 23
medical schools across the country.
I’m Allen, and it’s my privilege to be your AMSA President in 2024. From orientation to
graduation, AMSA is here to enhance your medical school journey at every step. We provide
an inclusive national community to fulfil your passions, empower your growth, and stand up for
what matters most to you.
This Guide will outline the diverse aspects of our organisation - from volunteering, to policy, to
events, and more - and most importantly, how you can get involved in it all. We can’t wait to
see you around AMSA in 2024 (and the years to come)!
For more information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with myself, your AMSA
ADVOCACY & POLICY
ADVOCACY
AMSA endeavours to harness the voice of 18,500 medical students to represent you at the
highest forums and push for the changes that make the medical system and your medical
school experience better! AMSA advocacy happens at multiple levels.
At the federal level, AMSA engages with governmental and medical stakeholders such as
the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand
(MDANZ) to create a more powerful voice on issues requiring thought and leadership from a
federal voice.
At the state, university and local level, AMSA liaises closely with university medical
societies (MedSocs) and state Medical Student Councils (MSCs) to provide support in
advocating for issues relevant to your state and university. This includes issues such as sexual
harassment, mental health support systems and internship availabilities.
GET INVOLVED
IN 2024!
In 2024, we will be continuing our Cost of Living Campaign to
advocate for tangible support for medical students nationwide.
We have so much more on offer though - sign up for advocacy
roles in our Initiative and Representative Groups (Page 7),
participate in Policy Action Teams and attend events like National
Council and your local Policy Think Tanks to see it all!

ADVOCACY & POLICY
POLICY
Policy is the beating heart of AMSA’s advocacy. Our broad, robust policy base represents the
views and beliefs of Australia’s 18,500 medical students, guiding how and where we undertake
advocacy. Spanning a multitude of issues that affect medical students and the communities
they live in, AMSA policies combine the latest evidence with the views of medical students to
codify our positions. Each policy is written by a team of Australian medical students and voted
on by your representatives at AMSA’s three National Councils each year.
Getting involved in a policy team gives medical students a valuable opportunity to develop
their policy skills. AMSA has a proud history of providing medical students with their first start in
policy and helping them develop the skills to be the change-makers of the future.
Currently, AMSA has 73 policies, all of which are available to read at tinyurl.com/AMSApolicy.
These cover a diverse range of areas from Medical Education, Supporting Students, Global
Health and Medical Workforce.
2023 KEY
MILESTONES
In 2023, we wrote and reviewed 20 policies. On the back of
these and the rest of our policy base, we
Successfully advocated for MedSocs across Australia to
disaffiliate from MDA National
Achieved free mental health first aid training for all
medical students across Australia
Opened dialogue with state and federal governments,
RDAA and ACRRM about revising the Bonded Medical
Program
GET INVOLVED
IN 2024!
The success of policy at AMSA relies on passionate,
knowledgeable authors. Please reach out to our National
Policy Officer, Jonathon Bolton (policy@amsa.org.au) if
you’re keen to get involved - no experience is required!

INITIATIVE GROUPS
AMSA INITIATIVE
GROUPS
WHO ARE WE?
AMSA has a number of initiative groups made up of
passionate volunteers. Varied and wide-reaching in their
scope, they contribute greatly to the local and national work
of AMSA.
Our initiative groups hold events, run competitions, create
resources for your learning, and advocate on important
medical student issues.

AMSA INITIATIVE GROUPS
AMSA MED ED
WHO ARE WE?
AMSA Medical Education (Med Ed) was founded in 2016 and is the
branch of AMSA that is dedicated to producing free, high-quality
resources that are accessible to all medical students across Australia.
We seek to achieve this through our two branches: Resource and
Research.
RESOURCE DIVISION
Med Ed Resource produces free, peerreviewed,
open-access educational
resources for medical students in four
streams:
AMSA Question Bank: the first national
question bank created by Australian
medical students, with 1300+ available
MCQs and quizzes
AMSA Factsheets: succinct 70+
summaries of highyield medical
conditions and Australian management
protocols
AMSA OSCEs: consists of 220+ OSCE
scenarios and marking guides.
“Stitched Up” Podcast: showcases
common high-yield medical conditions
in a fun way
RESEARCH DIVISION
Med Ed Research works with the AMSA
advocacy team to strengthen AMSA's
position on important national educational
issues and increases participation in
research through three streams:
Research Projects: students conduct
research, under the guidance of a
supervisor, on the status quo of medical
education in Australia to supplement
AMSA’s advocacy to improve medical
education
Research Resources: creates fact
sheets to help medical students
conduct research
Research Crash Course: an online
seminar event aimed at increasing
student engagement with research
