<strong>OP</strong>Prairiedaily.com life & Arts the orland park prairie | January 23, 2020 | 23 Jenny Talia organizes bushfire relief fundraiser Alyssa Groh, Freelance Reporter Australian born and raised and now an Orland Park resident, Jenny Talia has made a name for herself as a professional comedian who tells her jokes through music. Talia, who just released her eighth album, typically does not do shows during the holidays and during the month of February, but this year she is making an exception. After learning about the magnitude of the Australian bushfires that are destroying her homeland, Talia could not sit back and do nothing. Knowing the rest of her 2020 is booked for a tour, she decided to make an exception and add a benefit show in February. Talia is to perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 8 at Stage 773 in Chicago with all ticket proceeds to support relief efforts with the bushfires in Australia. “I decided to put this show on because being an Australian and growing up there and now living in the U.S., it has been pretty brutal to watch all the footage of what is happening,” Talia said. “Bushfires [are] something you definitely grow up with in Australia. It is part of the deal, but now it is changing because they are getting worse and bigger. It was an easy decision to put the proceeds toward the fire.” Talia is to donate all the proceeds from her show to the Australian bushfire relief efforts, specifically the Australian Red Cross and the Australian RSP- CA. “Quite often when you have bushfires, they are in one state, but the fires are spreading across several states, so it was hard to pick one organization to donate to,” Talia said. “The Red Cross and RSPCA will spread their efforts to everyone affected by the fires. Photo submitted state, I thought if I could distribute the funds to all of the people that need it that would be the place to go.” Choosing Stage 773 in Chicago as her venue for her benefit show was an easy choice, as she has performed at that venue Orland Parker joins Indianapolis orchestra many times. “I chose Chicago, because it is my other home and it is the perfect place for this show,” she said. “We always sell out here, and it is a great venue.” While the purpose of her show is to raise money for the Australian bushfires, Talia also will be promoting her new album. “I am a comedian; my job is to make you laugh until you cry,” Talia said. “I won’t be talking about the fires, because those who purchase tickets will already know where their money is going and why. “My show will include songs from my new album. ... I have had a lot of success with the songs on this album.” Some of the main themes in her new album talk about this generation where everyone is so easily offended by everything, and being able to move on and not let things impact you. “As a comedian, rather than let that stifle, I choose to go hard at [those topics], because I think it is hilarious.” Talia’s comedy is generally geared toward adult audiences. Meklis started his musical journey at 4 years old in Orland Park. And as a child, the first song he learned on the violin was “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” “I remember it was very difficult to learn how to hold it under my chin,” Meklis said of the instrument. “My neck muscles, of course, weren’t used to supporting an instrument, so it was painful at first.” Growing up around Chicago allowed him to study with talented violin teachers and attend great music schools. And he said access to a learning environment with a private instructor was a “crucial aspect” to his development. Now, at only 27 years old, his skills as a violinist have afforded him the opportunity to play some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. While studying for his master’s degree at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, Meklis accepted a position in the first violin section of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, a position he currently holds. He calls it a privilege to play in the ensemble. During his tenure at Roosevelt University, he studied under Emanuele Andrizzi, lecturer conducting for the music conservatory. Andrizzi witnessed firsthand Meklis’ transition from student to professional violinist. “When Vince won the audition for the Indianapolis Symphony, I had no doubt he would be a great asset for this wonderful professional orchestra, in consideration of the great job he had done in our student orchestras,” Andrizzi said. Andrizzi described Meklis as a “top violin player and great orchestra musician,” often assigned at the college to concertmaster, “a position that only two to three excellent and very solid students every year get to enjoy.” According to Almita Vamos, a world-renowned violin instructor who taught Meklis in high school at the Music Institute of Chicago, it is a rarity to see a violinist succeed after the first audition for a professional orchestra. Vamos said some talented students have auditioned “over 40 times” and still have not accomplished that goal. Vamos said she is especially fond of Meklis and his achievements because “he’s a nice human-being.” At his last, large-scale, local performance in November 2019, Meklis performed a concerto with Andrizzi, his former instructor. The 40-minute Jean Sibelius piece Meklis describes as “vast in its emotional scope,” took place at the Chicago Symphony Center. Andrizzi described the evening’s music as “one of the most challenging pieces of this genre and one that is usually a war horse” for some of the greatest violinists. Meklis’ delivered a “touching and consistent” performance, he added.
