IPSWICH –

Most trips to town

bill, property

taxes or a parking

ticket could not

be described

as relaxing.

Now thanks to

a new class on

Wednesday nights,

you can learn ways

to reduce your

stress and anxiety

by attending a

Meditation Class.

Largest DISTRIBUTION ACROSS the NORTH SHORE of ma & Coastal NH

www.thetowncommon.com

Offered by

Michael Lydon, a

certified trainer and new resident of

Ipswich, the hour-long Meditation

for Fundamental Well Being Class is

sponsored by the town’s Recreation

and Culture Department and is free,

although donations are accepted.

Don’t expect the class to be one

where you sit quietly and watch

the clouds go by, Lydon said. Body

focused meditation may be new for

some. It is finding the “still point in

a turning world,” he said.

The town began offering meditation

in January and will continue into

March. Last week was the third class

in the series, which is attracting 15

to 20 participants to Room C on the

second floor of town hall.

Upcoming classes focus on

improving relationships, deepening

into stillness, experiencing

fundamental consciousness,

improving empathy, releasing

physical pain and refining the

qualities of clarity, love and power.

may seem unusual, but municipalsponsored

Canada, can attend a meditation

class on their lunch hour. Also

meditation classes are held at City

Lydon, who coaches clients

mostly on-line, said he loves doing

meditation classes at Town Hall.

“It’s a beautiful building.”

This week’s class – entitled

Overcoming Fear and Anxiety

– should be very popular. “In this

class, you will learn body-focused

meditation techniques to work

through fear, anxiety, emotional

resistance and other factors that

block us from living to our full

potential,” the class description

states.

Lydon, a trained social worker,

moved to Ipswich last May looking

for a quaint, small New England

from living in New York City for

years. He discovered body-focused

Five years ago, Jane

Ciccone created a new

cracker that met her

exacting standards. It

had an amazing taste,

was gluten-free, vegan

and was made with no

genetically modified

organisms, while

being produced as ecofriendly

as possible.

The challenge of

mass-producing that

cracker and selling it in

the highly competitive

arena of the grocery

store was a tall order.

Church in downtown Newburyport.

There they baked, packaged, marketed

and delivered crackers to a growing list

of 150 to 200 independent grocers in

New England.

Upson, editors at Culture, described

as the “ultimate publication for those

who love cheese,” wrote of Ciccone’s

crackers: “How do you make a

healthful, great-tasting cracker that

satisfies all manners of dietary needs?

From those beginnings, Onesto Simple, keep it honest. Gluten-free and

(Italian for honest) crackers began being

sold three years ago in Whole Foods

Markets. Baking, packaging, marketing

and delivering became “too much” for

her small team in Newburyport.

She found a co-packer in quaint

Bristol, VT that shared her vision of

producing crackers made of simple

ingredients. The crackers are now

sold in stores nationwide, including

Whole Foods Markets as far away as

California.

Last month, its three flavors of crackers

-- everything, rosemary, and sea salt –

were named by Culture Magazine as one

of only four products its editors picked

this year as the best accompaniments

vegan has never tasted (or crunched)

so good.”

“Receiving this recognition means

the world to us,” Ciccone said.

“Culture is my go-to source for all

things cheese related. To have them

honor our crackers is a dream come

true.”

But that is only part of the good

news, Ciccone, who runs her womanowned

company with no investors,

got during the holidays. In a meeting

with the Whole Foods buyer for

her crackers, she asked if she would

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)

Although you might well be tempted

to be more extravagant than you

you’ll let your sensible Bovine instinct

guide you toward moderation.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An

among your colleagues.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A financial

If you do, the store will pull your

affect your credit score.

Don’t max out credit cards. This

might sound obvious but we have

seen buyers use a cash advance for

an initial escrow payment when

making an offer. This is the fastest

way to bring your credit score

down.

The Do’s:

Do stay current on existing

accounts. One late payment can

lower your credit by more than 30

points. Make your car, credit card

and any other payment on time. If

you get within a week or 10 days

of your closing, check with your

REALTOR® or mortgage agent as

to what to do with a payment.

Do continue good habits.

Chances are good that if you

can get preapproved, you have

paid your bills on time and have

excellent spending habits. Don’t

change that now. If things change

in your spending habits (you decide

that since your new home is near

the water it would be a great time to

buy a boat) you will raise red flags.

The most important thing to

remember when going through the

home finance approval process is

that change is bad. You are about

to change your living arrangement

so make sure that goes through by

not changing your spending habits.

have no solid business background.

Instead, seek advice on enhancing

your business prospects from bona fide

sources with good success records.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November

21) Standing up to support a colleague’s

plaudits for your honesty and courage.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to

long. But these things always need to

Think this through before deciding.

Health & Wellness

BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD

With more than 24 million

diabetics and 57 million prediabetics

in the United States,

nearly a quarter of the nation’s

population, the connections

between dental health and

diabetes have never been more

critical.

As an indication of our general

health, the rapidly rising rate of

diabetes should be ringing alarm

bells everywhere. The litany of

health implications from diabetes

is a long and grisly list. It is the

sixth leading cause of death in

the U.S. That is probably vastly

understated, because as many as

65% of deaths from diabetes are

attributed to heart attack and

stroke. People with diabetes have

about twice the overall risk of

death as those who don’t have the

disease.

Complications from diabetes

can cut years off productive

lives and interfere with the

quality of those lives through

a host of debilitating health

effects. Heart disease and stroke

rates are as much as four times

higher among diabetics. Nearly

three-quarters of diabetics have

Brighter Smiles...

DIABETES & DENTISTRY

high blood pressure. Each year,

diabetes causes blindness in as

many as 24,000 Americans. It

is the leading cause of kidney

failure, nervous system disease,

amputations – the list goes on.

This isn’t meant to be a scare

tactic. These are simply the facts

and, yes, they are sobering. But

if you have diabetes or are prediabetic,

you may want to brace

yourself, because we are going

to talk straight about oral health

and diabetes, two diseases that

can twist each other into a tight

downward spiral of amplifying

negative health effects. Unless

they are halted by your physician

and your dentist working in

tandem as a health care team,

together with your commitment

to hold up your end of the

bargain, these effects can continue

to compound.

The facts about the connections

between oral health and diabetes

are even more alarming than

those about diabetes alone. Here

are just a few:

Diabetics are twice as likely

to develop gum disease. This is

especially true if your diabetes

is not under control. The gum

disease then worsens your

diabetes through an automatic

response that your body uses to

fight the infection.

People with gum disease are

270% more likely to suffer a heart

attack than those with healthy

gums.

People who have diabetes

and severe gum disease have a

premature death rate nearly eight

times higher than those who do

not have periodontal disease.

Those who have gum disease

and diabetes together are more

than three time likely to die

of combined heart and kidney

failure.

In people who have type 2

diabetes, gum disease is a predictor

of end-stage kidney disease.

In people who have prediabetes

– blood glucose levels

that are higher than normal but

not in the diabetic range – gum

disease makes it more likely that

they will become diabetic.

Once established in a person

who has diabetes, the chronic

infection that causes gum disease

makes it more difficult to control

diabetes, and increases damage

and complications in blood vessel

disease.

We will continue this

discussion next week and talk

about some things you can do to

help this problem.
