Only candidates with previousmilitary experience are eligible to enlist. The SBS(R) isbased at various locations throughout the UnitedKingdom, but training is carried out in the South ofEngland.RecruitmentIn times of armed conflict and war, the SBS and SASare required to operate in small parties in enemycontrolledterritory. Operations of this nature require menof courage and high morale who have excellent tacticalawareness be it knowledge of special tactics or simplyknowing one's place in a polyvalent unit. Self-disciplineneatly ties into this. Intelligence, reliability, determinationand also being physically fit are key skills.In the past, the SBS was staffed almost entirely by theRoyal Marines. Volunteers for the SBS are now taken fromall branches of the British Armed Forces, althoughvolunteers still predominantly come from the RoyalMarines Commandos. Candidates wishing to serve withthe Special Boat Service must have completed at leasttwo years regular service and will only be accepted intothe SBS after completion of the selection process.SelectionUntil recently, the SBS had its own independentselection programme in order to qualify as a SwimmerCanoeist, but its selection programme has now beenintegrated into a joint UKSF selection alongsidecandidates for the Special Air Service. All members of theUnited Kingdom Armed Forces can be considered for SFselection, but approximately 40% of all UK Special Forcesare recruited from the Royal Marines. There are twoselections a year, one in winter and the other in summer,and all the instructors are full members of the Special AirService Regiment. Before being accepted onto a UKSFSelection course, a candidate must complete a two-weekSpecial Forces Briefing Course. The course tests thecandidates' physical fitness and observes their willingnessto conduct water-borne operations. The UKSF course isbroken down into two main parts, Selection andContinuation Training.Aptitude Phase (hill phase) – 4 weeks. This phase isconducted in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales.The Aptitude Phase is designed to select thoseindividuals who are suitable for SF training. The initialthree weeks are devoted to gradual physical training andprogressive exercises designed to develop physical andnavigational ability. Candidates will be expected tocomplete the Basic Combat Fitness Test (Infantry) on thefirst day of the course. Exercise HIGH WALK (Fan Dance)will take place on Day 6 and takes the form of an escortedhill march over approximately 23 km (14 mi). As with allassessment marches, additional time may be added forinclement weather conditions. Exercise HIGH WALKidentifies those individuals that are not adequatelyprepared to continue on the course. All other trainingduring this initial period is directed at preparingvolunteers for "Test Week" which is the fourth and finalweek of the Aptitude phase. "Test Week" consists of fivetimed marches of between 23–28 km (14–17 mi)conducted on consecutive days, followed by a finalendurance march of 64 km (40 mi); candidates mustcomplete this within 20 hours. Bergen weights carriedduring "Test Week" increase from 40 lb (18 kg) to 55 lb(25 kg) for the endurance march; in addition, a rifle iscarried on all marches. Volunteers are also required topass the UKSF swimming test that consists of high waterentry (3 m, 9.8 ft), treading water for nine minutesfollowed immediately by a swim of 500 m (1,600 ft)wearing Combat 95 12 . The test finishes with anunderwater swim of 10 m (33 ft) including a retrieval of asmall weight.Continuation TrainingThose who pass the Aptitude Phase will undertake anintensive period of instruction and assessment of SpecialForces Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs),including SF weapons and Standard OperationProcedures. The majority of this period is spent in thejungle, an environment that is suitable for SF training andideal to achieve the purpose of this phase. Much of thetraining is aimed at discovering an individual's qualities.Continuation training, which consists of SOP and Tacticaltraining in temperate and jungle environments, lasts nineweeks. This is conducted in the UK and Brunei.Employment TrainingEmployment Training consists of surveillance andreconnaissance training (2 weeks), army combat survival(2 weeks), SF parachute training (4 weeks), counterterrorist course (3 weeks), signals training (1 week), patroltraining and squadron induction training (2 weeks), and 1week officers week for potential officers. At the end of theresistance to interrogation phase the surviving candidatesare transferred to an operational squadron. This phase is14 weeks long. When accepted into an OperationalSquadron, the candidates must complete the SBSSwimmer Canoeist Course, (SC3) Course. The courselasts for several months and covers long distance Dives,Swims and Kayaks in open sea, often in poor weather.Underwater demolitions, Maritime counter terrorism, arealso practised. Reserve SelectionFor SBS(R) selection, only candidates with previousmilitary experience are eligible to enlist.
