VFW Auxiliary sends care packages overseas
Submitted by VFW Post
9545
On Jan. 4, VFW Post
9545 Auxiliary President
Linda Paschall and Auxiliary
member Bill Koch
took 68 packages to the
New Lenox Post Office to
be mailed to four local servicemen
that are stationed
livery. That’s nice, having a
large family in that regard.”
There are two main aspects
of the business: the
freight side and the moving
side. Herder Brothers
employs two drivers who
deliver raw car parts Monday
through Saturday, and
there are three main employees
who help clients
move, though that number
can go up to six or seven
if necessary. Typically, the
crew performs one to two
moves a day.
“I love the customers,
and it’s different every
day, and it’s a different
story every day,” he said.
“And that’s the fun part. I
could easily spend an hour
at someone’s house, after
the estimate, just talking.
in Afghanistan. Once they
are received, they will
share them with their fellow
troops.
The packages contain
toiletries, treats and other
personal needs. It is very
expensive to mail these
packages. Each package
costs $18.45 to mail. This
I think I get that from my
grandfather.”
Keeping a company
in business for 100 years
comes with its share of
challenges, and some of the
obstacles Herder Brothers
Movers has faced include
moving to an Internetbased
business model,
keeping up with licensing
and requirements and
signing reliable drivers and
laborers. But the business
has successfully adapted to
these changes over time and
has weathered significant
setbacks in the economic
landscape — Prohibition,
the Great Depression and
the housing market crash,
to name a few.
“They went through the
second World War, which
was significant for anyone
in the trucking business,
because you couldn’t buy
$1,254.60. The following
week Paschall mailed an
additional four packages.
new trucks, you couldn’t
buy new cars, you couldn’t
buy new tires, your gasoline
was rationed,” John
Herder said. “That was a
very difficult time for a
trucking company.”
John Herder said he
imagines his father would
be proud to see the company
continuing to thrive a
century after it began.
“He would be thrilled
that the same basic ideals
are still in place, that we
want to do well, that we
want to have a satisfied
customer base and we go
out of our way to do that,”
he said. “He started that,
and I tried to continue it,
and Christopher definitely
has continued that. People
like Herder Brothers, and
that’s important. Because
otherwise you don’t stay
around for 100 years.”
