PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS AND GEESE 

Spring is the air and this lovely weather has many of us visiting our 

community parks and ponds. It can be tempting to feed the ducks 

as geese as many of us have grown up thinking that this was an 

environmentally responsible and humane way to dispose of old or stale 

bread. However, feeding ducks and geese is actually unhealthy and 

potentially dangerous for the birds. This seemingly generous act, in fact, 

can be extremely harmful. 

Bread and similar products such as crackers, chips, doughnuts and 

popcorn have little nutritional value. Without healthy food and proper 

nutrition the ducks and geese will quickly succumb to disease and death. 

Feeding ducks and geese can lead to the following problems as well: 

• Duckling malnutrition - in areas where ducks are regularly fed bread 

the ducklings will not receive adequate nutrition for proper growth and 

development. 

• Overcrowding - Where food is easy to come by, ducks and other waterfowl 

will lay more eggs and the pond or lake will become overcrowded. This 

makes it more difficult for the birds to seek out healthier food sources 

and increases territorial aggression, especially during mating season. It 

will also cause ducks to cross busy streets in search of food. 

• Pollution - What happens to all that bread that is not eaten? It causes 

algae growths, pollution and can eventually eradicate fish and other life 

in the vicinity. 

• Diseases - A diet rich in carbohydrates leads to greater fecal production 

and bird feces easily harbors bacteria responsible for numerous diseases 

including avian botulism. 

• Attraction of pests - Rotting leftover food attracts other unwelcome 

pests such as rats, mice and insects. These pests can also harbor additional 

diseases that can be dangerous to humans. 

If you care about ducks and geese, do not feed them. They can live 

longer, healthier lives by relying on natural food sources such as aquatic 

plants, seeds, grasses and insects rather than taking handouts from willmeaning 

humans. Now that you know, you can help by not feeding the 

ducks and geese and by educating other duck lovers. 

RESIDENT & VISITOR ENTRY INFORMATION 

Residents with a Registered EZ Tag: 

• Enter through far right lane. 

• Gate Attendant will open the gate in the event that the EZ Tag barrier 

arm does not read your EZ Tag. You can contact the Gate Attendant by 

pressing #0001 on the call box at all remote gates. 

Please register your EZ Tag at your clubhouse office. The Onsite Manager 

will assign your EZ Tag to the entrance gate in accordance with the 

section you reside in (you will not have access to all gates, only the one 

for the section you live in). 

Residents with an “SG” Decal Sticker (must be displayed on top left corner 

of windshield): 

• Enter through middle lane at the man gated sections. Gate House 

check-in NOT Required. (Gate Attendant will open gate) 

If you need an “SG” decal sticker, please visit your local clubhouse office. 


Residents without an “SG” Decal Sticker: 

• Enter through far-left lane at the man gated sections. Gate House checkin 

is required. 

• The Gate House Attendant will require your valid Texas Driver’s License 

or Texas State ID to verify residency. 

• Gate Attendant will record name and license plate. 

If you are new to the community, show your current Valid Driver’s License 

or State Issued Photo ID and give the Gate Attendant your new Stone 

Gate/Canyon Lakes West address. Gate Attendant will also record name 

and license plate. 

Visitors: 

• Enter through far-left lane at the man gated sections. Gate House checkin 

is required. The Gate House Attendant will require you to present a 

valid Driver’s License or State ID 

• Identify name and address of Resident whom you are visiting 

• Gate Attendant will record name and license plate and you will be given 

entry 

* If the Resident has opted to be notified by phone before Visitors are 

granted entry, Visitors will only be granted entry if the resident answers 

and confirms entry 

Homeowners at remote gates can have a phone number programmed 

so that their name and a code will be displayed on the screen at their 

gate. Their guest will press # and the code to ring the homeowner. The 

homeowner will press “9” on their phone to open the gate 

Contractors: 

Enter through far-left lane at the man gated sections. Gate House 

check-in is required. The Gate House Attendant will record the following 

information: 

1. Name and address of service provider as well as personnel (valid 

driver’s license or state ID) 

2. Reason for visit 

3. License Plate 

If the Resident has opted to be notified by phone before Contractors 

are granted entry, Contractors will only be granted entry if the resident 

answers and confirms access. 

Access for contractors is issued on a day-to-day basis (must follow above 

procedures for all re-entry) Contractors at remote gates must contact the 

homeowner using the same process as a guest.

ROVING PATROL 

The primary function of a Roving Patrol service is to assist with crime 

deterrence by staying highly visible while conducting routine patrols 

throughout the community to observe and report suspicious activity to 

the local authorities and/or association.

present). While the officers do their best to handle most situations, 

sometimes Police assistance is necessary to properly handle the 

situation. The Roving Patrol Officers are not Law Enforcement and do not 

have the authority to arrest or detain unless, in the rare occasion, they are 

conducting a citizen’s arrest. This means that if the Roving Patrol Officers 

are called out to investigate a suspicious person and make contact with 

the individual, they cannot hold them for questioning if the subject fails 

to comply with the request to identify themselves and/or state their 

business. At that point the Officers will contact the Police for assistance 

if it is necessary. If the subject flees from the Patrol Officer, they are not 

permitted to give chase whether on foot or in a vehicle. There are times 

were the officers are called in situations where the Police/Fire/EMS needs 

to be the primary responders and called first. Some of these types of 

situations are as follows: • Speeding vehicles/reckless driving • Crimes 

that are potentially violent in nature • Domestic disturbances • Fire, flood 

or blood • Vehicle accidents • Medical emergencies 

The Roving Patrol Officers may be called by residents for any of the 

situations listed above, but it is important that the local authorities are 

contacted first to ensure the proper response to the situation has been 

provided. The Roving Patrol Officers may then take direction from these 

authorities and respond accordingly in correlation with policy for the 

current situation at hand.

GOLF COURSE SAFETY 

Please be aware of the safety hazards involved in trespassing onto 

the Sterling Country Club and Houston National cart paths and golf 

course. The cart paths on both courses are only for golfers that have 

registered through our Pro Shop. Cart paths are a means for players 

to complete their round of golf as quickly, conveniently and safely as 

possible. As the Stone Gate community continues to grow we feel 

it is our responsibility to educate every resident as best we can to 

keep pedestrians and their pets safe and away from the cart paths. 

Golf balls are often hit at speeds over 150 mph and can have deadly 

consequences to a human or pet if hit in the head, throat or chest. Because 

the paths are for registered golfers, those playing golf are not aware of the 

presence of pedestrians on the course, which can lead to very damaging 

collisions with hikers/bikers and their pets. This January I fielded a report 

of a pedestrian being struck by a golf ball and other reports of residents 

having near miss encounters with golf carts when traveling along the 

paths. Hiking, jogging, biking, dog walking, golf cart/ATV’s not being 

used to play golf, skateboarding and skating on the cart paths is 

strictly prohibited anywhere on the golf course because of safety 

hazard and trespassing concerns. Thanks for your cooperation!

BOARD APPROVES BOUNDARY 

CHANGES FOR 2020-2021 

The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the administration’s 

recommendation for the establishment of attendance boundaries for 

Rowe Middle School and rezoning modifications of multiple campus 

attendance boundaries effective for the 2020-2021 school year during 

the regularly scheduled meeting on December 16 th . 

The approved boundary plan provides enrollment relief for Thornton and 

Anthony middle schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Other impacted 

campuses are Hopper and Kahla middle schools, Cypress Park and 

Cypress Springs high schools and Hemmenway, Walker, Wilson and Tipps 

elementary schools. 

The boundary proposal allows Rowe Middle School, which will open 

in August 2020, to open with sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The 

proposal aligns feeder patterns while amending boundary lines for new 

developments.

• Any middle school student affected by this boundary change who will 

be in eighth grade for the 2020-2021 school year may remain at their 

current middle school on a student transfer if their parents provide

The two are influential off the court. They serve 

in leadership positions for the WNBA Players 

Association, with Nneka elected president in 

2016. Chiney is a full-time basketball analyst 

with ESPN. Both have partnered with the U.S. 

Fund for UNICEF to support efforts in Nigeria. 

A hospitality room was set up before the game, 

where the sisters spent time with friends 

and family. Culinary students prepared two 

personalized cakes and cookies. A slideshow and 

other memorabilia across the room highlighted 

the Ogwumikes’ time with the Bobcats.

Cy-Fair High School graduates and former girls’ basketball standouts 

Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike returned to their alma mater on December 

13 th , as the program celebrated the two and officially retired their jerseys 

before the varsity got the best of one of its rivals. 

Before the varsity team took the floor against Cypress Falls High School, 

the program and supporters welcomed the Ogwumike sisters and their 

family to the court, gifting them framed replica jerseys before all in 

attendance were asked to look up to the rafters to see Nneka’s No. 30 and 

Chiney’s No. 13 jerseys. 

The sisters join another former Cy-Fair basketball great, Lindsey Harding, 

whose No. 12 jersey was retired in 2007. The 2002 Cy-Fair graduate 

starred at Duke University before becoming the WNBA’s No. 1 overall pick 

in 2007. She is currently an assistant coach for player development for the 

Sacramento Kings. 

“It means the world to me to have my jersey retired back at Cy-Fair 

because Cy-Fair is where I became confident in who I was and who I 

could be in this world,” Chiney Ogwumike said. “Cy-Fair basketball sets a 

high standard for excellence and it is an honor to be a part of its legacy 

alongside my sister.” 

Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike both played collegiately at Stanford 

University, posting a combined 203-19 record across six seasons to go 

along with five Final Four appearances. Both were No. 1 overall picks in 

the WNBA (2012 and 2014). Nneka was the league’s MVP in 2016 while

That run included four consecutive trips to the 

UIL Basketball State Championships (2007-2010) and Class 5A titles in 

2008 and 2010. Nneka also led the Bobcats to the UIL state semifinals in 

volleyball in 2007. 

Each sister was named the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Athlete of 

the Year after winning at the state level and Player of the Year by Parade 

magazine’s annual All-America team. Nneka was named MaxPreps.com’s 

first-ever Girls National Athlete of the Year in 2008, with Chiney earning 

the same distinction two years later. 

During the pregame ceremony, Head Basketball Coach Anne Roubique 

thanked the entire Ogwumike family for their continued contributions 

to CFISD and Cy-Fair High School. Before taking the microphone, Nneka 

and Chiney spotted even more former teammates among the many 

supporters and fans who packed the stands, many in white t-shirts with 

a maroon paw print on the front and the retired jersey numbers on the 

back. 

“Cy-Fair is all about the people and those who made a mark during my 

high school tenure [who] still are a big part of my life today,” Chiney 

Ogwumike said. 

Along with a framed replica jersey, each was presented with a trophy 

and 2019-2020 season ‘Hoop Squad’ shirt. Both sisters then joined the 

current varsity team in a pregame chant before taking photos, signing 

autographs and cheering on the Bobcats. They served as judges during 

a halftime competition among the baseball and softball players and a 

raffle was held for a chance to win an autographed shoe. Cy-Fair ended 

the night off with a 76-39 victory. 

“I’m not sure I can put into words how blessed I feel for this to be 

happening,” Nneka Ogwumike said. “Cy-Fair was a legacy before 

we attended and I am simply grateful to have been a part of 

history.”

Slow Cooker Taco Soup 

You could make this on National Homemade Soup Day February 4th! 

Ingredients: 

1 pound ground beef 

1 onion, chopped 

1 (16 ounce) can chili beans, with liquid 

1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans with liquid 

1 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn, with liquid 

1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce 

2 cups water 

2 (14.5 ounce) cans peeled and diced tomatoes 

1 (4 ounce) can diced green chile peppers 

1 (1.25 ounce) package taco seasoning mix 

A few Optional Toppings:

Shredded Cheese 

Sour Cream 

Directions: In a medium skillet, cook the ground beef until browned over medium 

heat. Drain, and set aside. Place the ground beef, onion, chili beans, kidney beans, 

corn, tomato sauce, water, diced tomatoes, green chile peppers and taco seasoning 

mix in a slow cooker. Mix to blend and cook on low setting for 8 hours.

Lighter Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo 

Ingredients: 

2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts 

2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 

4 cloves garlic, minced 

ground black pepper to taste 

2 cups heavy cream 

2 egg yolks 

salt to taste 

1 pound fettuccine 

1 sprig chopped fresh parsley 

2 cups freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, divided 

Directions: Combine chicken breasts and chicken broth in a saucepan 

over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to low; 

simmer for 5 minutes. Turn breasts, cover and simmer another 5 minutes. 

Remove from heat and let sit with the cover on for 15 minutes. 

Remove chicken breasts from the broth and set aside to cool, reserving 

the broth in the saucepan. Once the chicken is cool enough to handle, 

cut into bite-size slices. Return the chicken broth to medium heat and 

cook until reduced to 1 cup. Stir garlic, black pepper and heavy cream 

into the reduced broth; bring to a simmer and remove from heat. 

Whisk egg yolks in a bowl until smooth. Beat 1 tablespoon of the warm 

cream mixture into the eggs until thoroughly incorporated; repeat until 

about 1/2 cup of the warm cream mixture is used. Whisk the warm cream 

and egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining cream 

mixture. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, until the 

mixture almost comes to a simmer and thickens, about 5 minutes. Season 

with salt and black pepper to taste. 

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook fettuccine in 

boiling water, stirring occasionally, until nearly cooked through, about 

7 minutes. Drain. 

Stir parsley, 1 cup of Parmigiano-Reggiano and cream mixture into the 

pasta. Remove from heat, cover and let sit for a few minutes until thick. 

Fold chicken and 1 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano into the pasta mixture to 

serve.
