STILL ON THE FENCE ABOUT HOSTING AN
EXCHANGE STUDENT?
You don’t have any kids? Are you a single parent? Same sex couple? An
empty nester? This is not a problem, we place our students in all kinds
of families! You’re not rich? Neither am I! Your exchange student comes
with their own spending money and health insurance. All you provide is
room/board and three meals a day. Oh and TLC…but that’s free. Live in
the middle of nowhere? Small town? Not a big deal. Some kids prefer to
get away from the hustle and bustle of big cities. The exchange students
also do pretty well in small schools, as they usually get to be the center of
attention and make friends rather quickly. Our students also get chances
to travel to New York, Washington DC, Hawaii and California…so they
can get their fill of the city life and return back to the peaceful sounds of
nature. Do you consider yourself a boring person? More than likely this
is not true and you should quit being so hard on yourself. Your student
will make friends. Your student will meet other exchange students. Your
student will attend activities offered by our program. Your student will
get involved in sports and school clubs. Your purpose is not to entertain
them. But you might find that you bring a little adventure to each others
lives. Kids are too young? Great! Lots of students love young kids and
your kids will love them. It’s beneficial to introduce your kids to new
cultures at a very young age. You’re preparing them to accept people no
matter what the religion, color of their skin or language they speak. That
my friend, is good parenting. Don’t hold back! This is a gret experience for
both parties. You get the opportunity to change a child’s life. You get the
satisfaction of seeing them grow, even after they leave your home into
becoming a doctor, a lawyer, a diplomat, artist, teacher…the list goes
on. And you contributed to that success! And the best part of it all, is
you gain another family member for life. We need people like you to give
these kids a chance. STS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose
mission is to place exchange students in our area. If you are interest in
hosting, please contact me at 832-455-7881 or at vicki.stsfoundation@
yahoo.com. I’ll be happy to answer any question you might have and get
you started on hosting your very own student!
BOARD APPROVES BOUNDARY
CHANGES FOR 2020-2021
The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the administration’s
recommendation for the establishment of attendance boundaries for
Rowe Middle School and rezoning modifications of multiple campus
attendance boundaries effective for the 2020-2021 school year during
the regularly scheduled meeting on December 16 th .
The approved boundary plan provides enrollment relief for Thornton and
Anthony middle schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Other impacted
campuses are Hopper and Kahla middle schools, Cypress Park and Cypress
Springs high schools and Hemmenway, Walker, Wilson and Tipps elementary
schools. The boundary proposal allows Rowe Middle School, which will open
in August 2020, to open with sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The proposal
aligns feeder patterns while amending boundary lines for new developments.
Per CFISD boundary transfer policies: Any middle school student affected
by this boundary change who will be in eighth grade for the 2020-2021
school year may remain at their current middle school on a student
transfer if their parents provide transportation. This opportunity will not
be available for younger siblings; • Students who are affected by a high
school boundary change who will have an older sibling in 10 th , 11 th or
12 th grades attending the affected high school may choose to transfer to
their original high school rather than attend the high school designated
by the rezoning. The sibling transfer will remain eligible for UIL varsity
participation and they will be allowed to remain until graduation and
• Any elementary school student affected by this boundary change who
will be in fifth grade for the 2020-2021 school year may remain at their
current elementary school on a student transfer if their parents provide
transportation. This opportunity will not be available for younger siblings.
View the approved boundary recommendation on the CFISD website at
BOY SCOUT TROOP 609
Boy Scout Troop 609 is a specialized for Boys with high functioning
Autism Spectrum Disorders. They meet at the Westview School on the 1 st
and 3 rd Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 838
Troop 838 is a small pack located near Hwy 6 and West Road at the
Crossbridges Church. We are between the Copperfield and Aberdeen
neighborhoods. Being a smaller troop allows us to be flexible and address
the needs of our scouts more nimbly. We currently have boys from ages
11 to 17 within our group working to make Eagle.
We try to camp monthly, with a wide variety of locations on our agenda.
The different locations are chosen by the senior boys to more directly
meet our training needs and to keep expenses low. In fact, we have some
of the lowest expenses in the area.
Our adult leaders are all experienced with years of scouting under their
belt per individual. We also work closely with several local packs of cub
scouts and participate in civic duties around the area as well. Please
contact us at TROOP838CYPRESS.ORG or 414-331-3321.
TROOP 1865
Troop 1865 runs a diverse program of outdoor and service activities,
with events selected by the scouts themselves. We meet Mondays at 6:30
PM, at the Copperfield HOA building on Willow River and Hwy 6, behind
Labay. We’ve gone backpacking through the National Forest, rappelling
off Enchanted Rock, Survival camping, boating, canoeing and anything
else the scouts can dream up. We do high-adventure camping at Philmont
and Seabase. Our advancement program has enabled scout to achieve
the coveted rank of Eagle Scout at 10 times the national average rate.
We see scouting as a practice run on adult life. Scouts learn about
leadership and teamwork through having to work together in the field.
We learn about responsibility through fund-raising activities that have
allowed the entire troop to pay for their own summer camp each year.
CUB SCOUT PACK 2
We are an active year round pack for Kindergarten-5 th grade that focuses
on life skills, teamwork, leadership and FUN! Cub Scout activities include
camping, fishing, pinewood derby, hiking and much more! During the
school year we meet on the 3 rd Monday of each month at 7 PM at Birkes
Elementary in the cafeteria. Contact me for more information and to find
out what exciting activities we have planned for summer! Ame Lane-281-
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA -
COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in
helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which
help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston
NATIONAL BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February is National Black History Month, also known as National
African American History Month, a time for all Americans to celebrate
the achievements of African Americans and recognize their central role
in American history.
Other countries, including Canada and Great Britain, have also set aside
months to honor black history. The month of February was chosen to
coincide with the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and noted civil
rights advocate Frederick Douglass. The first record of Africans arriving in
North America is dated 1619, when a privateer ship carrying “twenty and
odd” Africans landed at Point Comfort, Virginia, which is now modernday
Hampton, Virginia. The Africans were traded as slaves in exchange
for provisions.
African-American’s impact our society throughout history and in
numerous ways. Here are just a few prominent individuals we honor this
month:
• Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American appointed to the
Supreme Court. We recognize Thurgood Marshall every year on National
Maryland Day.
• George Washington Carver developed over 300 products from peanuts.
Celebrate George Washington Carver and his contributions to the peanut
industry on National Peanut Day.
• Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American woman elected to U.S.
House of Representatives.
• Rosa Parks helped initiate the Civil Rights Movement by refusing to give
up her seat on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Celebrate Rosa Park on
Rosa Parks Day and learn more about her contributions to the Civil Rights
Movement.
• Louis Armstrong is widely known as a jazz pioneer. Information about
Louis Armstrong can be found in November on National Louisiana Day.
• Colin Powell is a 4-star General who became Secretary of State. Colin
Powell dedicated the Buffalo Soldier monument at Fort Leavenworth,
Kansas, establishing the first Buffalo Soldiers Day.
• Barack Obama was elected the first Black President of the United States.
Black History Month was created by twentieth-century historian
Carter Woodson, who believed black Americans were not adequately
represented in the study of American history. Carter Woodson hoped
for the day when black history would be accepted as a part of American
history. Formerly known as Negro History Week, Black History Month was
officially declared by President Gerald Ford in 1976.
NATIONAL BIRD FEEDING MONTH
During National Bird Feeding Month in February, keep the bird feeders
filled and your binoculars ready.
Bird watching and feeding have become a popular hobby. By providing
basic shelter and seed, hobbyists watch from their windows or along
trails. While it’s a year-round hobby, watching during the depths of winter
offers some of the most beautiful birding available. Not only do you see
the birds against a white backdrop, but the variety of birds in winter
climates will increase your interest.
• Be sure to feed regularly and place your feeder away from predators.
• Set binoculars near the window for best viewing.
• Obtain a bird book for identifying new species.
FILL UP THE BIRD FEEDER OR ADD ONE THIS MONTH
Use #NationalBirdFeedingMonth to share social media. In 1994,
Congressman John Porter established February as National Bird Feeding
Month due to the harsh conditions endured during one of the coldest
months of the year. Source: https://nationaldaycalendar.com
ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON SCHOLA CANTORUM
Do you want your children to become lifelong servants of the Church?
Singing in a children’s choir is a great way to help that. The St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton Schola Cantorum is currently accepting children Grades 4-12
for its after-school choir program. The choir is responsible for enriching
the Mass on 10:30 on Sundays and rehearses every Wednesday from
3:45-5 PM. Unique in the area, the choir focuses on singing music from
the rich Catholic tradition, including chant and polyphony, as well as the
finest modern church music. Time is devoted to building the children’s
skills of music reading, vocal technique, thinking about the words and
the structure and meaning of the Mass. Service hours are available for
older students. For more information, please contact Dr. Douglas O’Neill
Lighter Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo
Ingredients:
2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
4 cloves garlic, minced
ground black pepper to taste
2 cups heavy cream
2 egg yolks
salt to taste
1 pound fettuccine
1 sprig chopped fresh parsley
2 cups freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, divided
Directions: Combine chicken breasts and chicken broth in a saucepan
over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to low;
simmer for 5 minutes. Turn breasts, cover and simmer another 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and let sit with the cover on for 15 minutes.
Remove chicken breasts from the broth and set aside to cool, reserving
the broth in the saucepan. Once the chicken is cool enough to handle,
cut into bite-size slices. Return the chicken broth to medium heat and
cook until reduced to 1 cup. Stir garlic, black pepper and heavy cream
into the reduced broth; bring to a simmer and remove from heat.
Whisk egg yolks in a bowl until smooth. Beat 1 tablespoon of the warm
cream mixture into the eggs until thoroughly incorporated; repeat until
about 1/2 cup of the warm cream mixture is used. Whisk the warm cream
and egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining cream
mixture. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking constantly, until the
mixture almost comes to a simmer and thickens, about 5 minutes. Season
with salt and black pepper to taste.
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook fettuccine in
boiling water, stirring occasionally, until nearly cooked through, about
7 minutes. Drain.
Stir parsley, 1 cup of Parmigiano-Reggiano and cream mixture into the
pasta. Remove from heat, cover and let sit for a few minutes until thick.
Fold chicken and 1 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano into the pasta mixture to
serve.
