LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION
LEVEL 5 | 5 CREDITS | FULL YEAR
GRADE 12
This is a rigorous, college-level course. The
reading is challenging, and the writing is
frequent and requires an independent mind. The
theme for the year is the examination of how
various works of literature answer the two
philosophical questions: Who Am I? and What is
My Place in the Universe? The works, covering a
wide range from Greek tragedy (Oedipus) to
contemporary fiction (The Kite Runner), will
include short stories, plays, novels, non-fiction,
and poetry. The course is heavily analytical in
nature and prepares you to do independent
literary analysis. Through a close reading of
texts, you will develop perceptive reading
strategies and explore a variety of traditional
and contemporary methods of literary analysis.
You will enhance your writing skills through
frequent, challenging assignments and further
develop your individual voice and writing style.
You will also prepare for the AP Literature and
Composition Exam through the completion of
on-demand writing prompts and multiple-choice
selections.
