He said this in Ikeja during the Formal Launch and Graduation Ceremony of the Eko Excel Teachers Professional Development and Training Programme. The Eko Excel is aimed at training, supporting and motivating public school teachers to succeed as highly skilled professionals in their calling. Governor Sanwo-Olu said, “This multi investment in teachers capacity building seeks to reposition public education, improve the method of teaching to make it standard of the 21st Century and restore confidence in public school system. “We are committed to enabling Lagos State teachers to be more professional and technologically sound in the delivery of their work. At the end of this initiative, over 14,000 public primary school teachers would have benefitted from the initiative and our belief is that this model will impact people positively all over our state. “The importance of this programme cannot be down played since well trained teachers will assist in the education and development of our future leaders and that we believe, will make them academically sound, financially Oshuntuyi stated this in Lagos during the Annual Mathematics Conference and Exhibition, AMCE, organised by the Foundation. He stated this in Osogbo during the Annual Retreat of the College of Humanities and Culture of the Osun State University, UNIOSUN. In his speech tagged, “Mentorship, Academic Collaboration and University Culture: A Global Perspective,” the don added that teamwork, freedom of learning, institutional autonomy, intellectual development, pursuit of truth, academic and moral integrity, leadership, service orientation, respect for one another and diversity were the core elements which determine an ideal academic culture. The professor of linguistics who described UNIOSUN as a unique institution, also emphasized the need for academic collaboration, mentoring practices, national ideology-driven research and curricula that emphasize interdisciplinary. He noted that belief in single modernity was a bane of educational development in the country and advocated for a system that would be open to diversity. His words: “This (belief in single modernity) mindset enforces a worldview and paradigm that is considered as truth but only applicable to originating cultural ideology. It ignores the fact that there are alternative paths to progress and divergent conceptual possibilities of what constitutes progress, development and modernity. “Alternative and authentic pathways have been crowded out and there is a failure to build our educational system on the basis of the potentials of our society. Truth is, the polytechnic system is focused on hands on training. No deadline. For the polytechnics, Mass Communication should retain the current curriculum for National Diploma and possibly unbundle at the Higher National Diploma. The options cannot be as many as seven. Journalism and Media Studies, Broadcast, Public Relations, Digital Communication, Film and Cinematography as well as Mass Communication Technology (focusing on management of studios and laboratories). The polytechnics need not follow the unbundling as spelt out for the universities since they are more into the practical and hands on training. What advice do you have for prospective students? Mass Communication under any name retains its glory as the programme that focuses you on the search for the truth. It is dedicated to starry eyed youngsters who want to change the world. If your mission is to defend the ordinary man on whom indignity is heaped, embrace Mass Communication and you will not regret it. If you desire a course of study to keep you abreast of others in public affairs, embrace any aspect of Mass Comm and you will have no regrets. We are prepared —Jimoh The Head of Department, Journalism, in the School of Communication, Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, Dr. Jide Jimoh, said the university and the department are adequately prepared for the unbundling of the study of Mass Communication into seven departments as ordered by the National Universities Commission, NUC. He said: “In 2000-2001 session, when we started this department, it started with seven departments which would have had students graduating with B.Sc Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising, Broadcasting, etc, but the setback we had was that we didn’t have enough personnel to drive the vision we had about departmentalization of these courses.” Jimoh opined that the unbundling would be an advantage over previous policy “because Mass Communication is a very wide field and this, therefore, will make students masters in certain areas as they will have deep knowledge in the departments they choose to go and study.” While noting that students will still be taught basic knowledge in Mass Communication generally at the foundation level, he added: “For now, we cannot say when the new policy will kickstart in LASU but most likely, the set after the 2019/20 will be part of this new policy.” He explained that for the exercise to start in LASU, the department needs to get the NUC’s approval which has already been given, then engage the management of the university on allocation of resources. Dr Jimoh said students resuming for the 2019/20 academic session will not benefit from the new policy because they picked Mass Communication when they registered for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations and were offered admission for the same.
