What is Coating Thickness Meter and How It Works?

A gauge which measures paint thickness is also called a paint meter. The thickness of dry films is

measured by it. Measuring dry film thickness is the most difficult measurements in the industry

of coating. It is because it has a great consequence on the process of coating, its quality, and its

cost.

Measuring dry film thickness is also used for examining the coating’s predicted lifespan,

appearance, and utility of the product. It warranties the compliance with a host of the

international level convention.

Dry film thickness gauge is available in three different models. Every coating of thickness gives

advanced functionality to its users.

The varied coating thickness gauge exhibits a wide variety of probe. It also promises to offer even

better dry film thickness measurement flexibility.

Basic coating thickness gauges are just right for single-handed functions. It’s because the wide

track of the internal search provides better steadiness for measuring the coating of thickness.

Working of coating thickness meter

There are basically two types of coating thickness meters.

1. Magnetic pull-off mechanism

2. Constant pressure

Magnetic pull-off mechanism

An everlasting magnet is kept beside a painted ferrous metal façade. Then a spring tension is

eventually enhanced, in the time the magnet is pulled off. At that particular point, the scale is

read for indicating the paint thickness. The magnet requires a lot of force to get pulled off from

the thin paint. This force is more than the force which is required for thick paint.

Constant Pressure

This is also called fixed probe gauge. There is a coil in the probe which is restricted to the

electronic circuitry. The current is required to balance an internal spring which corresponds to

the distance between the probe and the ferrous metal surface. Then a digital voice reads out the

message.

A distinction is used for the nonferrous metallic materials. These materials are called eddy

current gauges. In these gauges, current is instigated in the metal which also causes a magnetic

field which is used to correspond the thickness of the paint. Again a digital message is given.

Where ultrasonic gauges are concerned, sound energy is transmitted into the paint. When the

sound energy strikes with the paint, it gets stroked back to the probe. The time which is taken

for the pulse to travel through the paint and back are measured by internal circuitry. This

harmonizes with the thickness.
