Letter
We’re one month into a brand new decade and I’m
feeling an increasing urgency to bite the bullet
and finish off all those decorating tasks that
remain irritatingly incomplete since we started renovating
our little Victorian terrace over eight years ago! So, I’ve
been watching Rebecca Cuffe compile this issue’s Interiors
Supplement with great interest as she sifts through some of
the loveliest looks that 2020 promises to deliver. From timeless
velvets to nature-inspired wallpapers, she’s edited down a
selection of the most ‘wearable’ interior trends to transition
your home from the twenty-tens to the twenty-twenties.
Sticking with interiors, explore two beautifully different homes
– which both feature copious amounts of space as a common
denominator – with comprehensive tours of Olya Lammas’
Victorian villa and Steve Ackhurst and Bronwen Malcolm’s
impressive new build. Maggie Alderson and Antonia Methuen find
out how they’ve tailored their homes to their exact requirements.
Elsewhere, Sue Whigham explores the origins of plant
hunting and Jo Arnell gets to grips with winter colour
outside. Be sure to take Melissa Hemsley’s nourishing recipes
for a spin and see how Kate Liz Watts has styled beautiful
jewels that would make the perfect Valentine’s Day treat.

“I
wasn’t planning on buying a home like this!” says
interior designer Olya Lammas. We are standing in
the double height hallway of her detached Victorian
villa tucked away on one of Tunbridge Wells’s most charming
streets, Hungershall Park. Olya admits she didn’t know the road
existed until the estate agent took her and her husband to see
the property. “We had moved from London in 2014 and lived
in a converted stables, however I needed somewhere with more
space,” she says. “This house had everything we wanted and

Lautrec’s Moulin Rouge paintings from the 19th century.
A rug from The Rug Company and a bright green Conran
velvet sofa compliment the painting’s palette
also some things that I never knew that I wanted.” Olya
points out of the window. “When I was in London
I never dreamt I would wake up and see cows!”
As the animals quietly graze in the green fields
across the road, it is easy to see how Olya and her
family immediately fell in love with the house, even
though she needed to completely re-decorate the whole
building from top-to-toe. “I changed pretty much
everything: the lighting, the heating, the flooring and
the fireplaces.” Indeed, it has been the transformation
of her house that has simultaneously heralded in a new
career for Olya and her company, A House To Love.
“I bought the house and at the same time closed
my fashion boutique. I worked in fashion for years
in London but when I began working on the house
suddenly people began to ask me about my style
and my decorating tips. It’s as though the house
has helped me to completely change career!”
It’s a change that Olya has embraced with open
arms. “In some ways interior design is very like
fashion, you need to use your imagination, you need
focal points and a sense of balance, you need to
create a mood and yet for me, interior design feels
so natural, I just love it and wish I had done it

years ago, I understand myself so much better now.”
Olya’s enthusiasm is infectious. You can understand why
her client list is growing fast as she shows me how she created
each room from scratch, using artwork, pieces of furniture
or an accessory as her inspiration, a springboard of mood or
colour from which to create her overall design. Having trained
in technical drawing at Chelsea College of Art, Olya said she
didn’t want to become too constrained and decided not to
carry on studying as she felt that the best interior designers are
untrained and she wanted to rely on her eye and intuition.
“I love the work of the interior designer Kit Kemp, her
style has been a big inspiration for me, her use of pattern
and her ability to mix styles and periods with maximum
impact,” says Olya.
Although influenced by Kit, it is very obvious that
Olya’s home very much reflects her own hand-writing
and style. She pulls out a book on Kaitag textiles from
Dagestan (think Suzani but with even more chic) and
explains how these antique pieces are starting points. Olya,
who is a bit of a textile obsessive, has even been known to
source fabrics from Argentina where she discovered they
are still making raw textiles created on manual machines,
which Olya uses for wall coverings and natural raffias.
It is the pursuit of unique and very special fabrics and
the attention to detail and a love of pattern and texture
that is apparent throughout the interior of the house.
“I start with a concept,” says Olya. We are looking at two
pieces of art depicting surrealist-inspired Japanese warriors
that mirror each other on opposing walls in her living room.
“I discovered these at a dealer in Antwerp, where I source
a lot of my antiques and art. I saw them and before I had
any idea how much they were, I decided to take them as
I knew they would be the starting point for this room.”
From the soft colour of the walls to the bespoke Wendy
Morrison silk rug, the round mother-of-pearl coffee table
from Anthropologie USA to the Jonathan Adler light fitting
and William Yeoward lamps, these two paintings gave Olya
the road map for her design. However, it is Olya’s unique skill
with colour, inserting pops of blue within the scheme in the
blue velvet stools and blue hydrangea plant that really lifts the
design. Just like her design guru Kit Kemp, Olya has deftly
mixed styles and periods, adding an antique French mirror
alongside the rustic-style objets, ikat and velvet cushions.
One of the most impressive spaces is the double height
entrance hall. Flooded with light from the room’s huge
windows as well as from the gallery above, you can see
why Olya sees the space almost like a gallery for her everchanging
collection of antique furniture. As well as

Above right: The magnificent wooden staircase has been carpeted in a natural jute
textiles,” she says, “they are quite beautiful pieces reflecting
an individual woman’s life. I hope I have done them justice.”
Throughout the house, window treatments have been
kept minimal. In the living room, Olya opted to keep the
existing wooden pelmets, one of the very few elements
that remained from the house’s former life. In the hallway
she has employed a very soft Zimmer + Rohde animal
print on blinds that allow in as much of the surrounding
light as possible, flooding the house all day long. In
the bedrooms too, she has kept the blinds minimal.
Olya is keen to show me her husband’s study. “I am not
into one style of design,” she says as we enter a room with
a very different mood from the living room and hallway.
Undeniably masculine in its intent and varied in its style, the
focus of the room is a piece by the artist Louis Midavaine, a
copy of one of Toulouse Lautrec’s Moulin Rouge paintings
from the 19th century. This bold piece of artwork has
been married with a green The Rug Company rug and
a bright green Conran velvet sofa. Dark blue cabinetry
along one wall sits happily with the soft pinky browns of a
leather Mid-mod chair and two dusty pink velvet cushions.
“It’s a room of straight lines,” says Olya, “something
that would appeal to my husband, a room for him.”
The downstairs loo of any large property can be a forlorn
and forgotten space but not with Olya. Her lavatory is a
room whose generous proportions have been decorated in
a stylish contemporary geometric printed wallpaper. There
is a pop of instantly recognisable orange from a bookcase,
packed with Penguin classics, which Olya painstakingly
sourced from eBay, next to which sits a rather fine antique
mirror. The generous marble sink is flanked by two
wheatsheaf lighting sconces that sit either side of the mirror.
Although Olya has not yet done any major work on
the family kitchen and dining room she has already

worked her stylist magic on the space. Tom Dixon
‘Etched’ lampshades sit above the island to which Olya
has added a Carrera marble top. Metal bar stools from
Out There Interiors give the space an instant feeling of
cosmopolitan chic. In the dining area, like the rest of the
house, Olya has combined looks: a Balinese bench, an
antique oak dining table and a Moooi spherical pendant.
As the house is also home to four boys, it is with a sense
of relief that, as we move upstairs, I find Olya has carved a
feminine recluse within her dressing room. “It’s ironic I have
this wonderful space, as I gave most of my clothes to charity
from when I worked in fashion. My wardrobe is different
now but I am glad I have this room in which to escape.”
The room is an essay in chic tones. A soft silk Nourison rug
underfoot pays homage to the pale parchment-effect doors,
which Olya designed with a team from Beyond Joinery in
London, created with Xylocleaf panels and polished brass
edges. The Buster + Punch etched brass handles and the Rima
& McRae antique glass back panels for her bag and perfume
shelves are the cherry on a very pretty cake of a room.
The house, which is still a work in progress, has several
bedrooms leading off the generous upper landing. Olya
has completed two of the guest rooms so far and is
planning the re-design of her own master bedroom in the
next few months. “Although each of the bedrooms has its
own look,” she explains, “I wanted them to relate to one
another as you glimpse them from across the landing.”
The dominant palette is blue, however whilst the larger
bedroom tiptoes from the contemporary in the artwork
to the chinoiserie influence of the antique Chinese screen
and porcelain pots, the smaller bedroom is a children’s
dream, with its geometric Nina Campbell wallpaper and
Button & Sprung over-sized headboard. As with the rest
of the house, Olya has let the unrivalled countryside
views from the windows do the talking. She has also
continued her love of natural textures with rattan and
jute in accessories such as rugs and lampshades.
As with her client work for her company A House To
Love, Olya has curated a space for an individual, a house
that fits her and her family’s lifestyle. She has designed a
home that flows from room to room, allowing everyone
to have their own space, whilst allowing the separate
elements to talk to each other. Creating a comfortable
interior within a very large building is no mean feat, but
Olya has designed one where her life, her family and her
new business all come together in perfect harmony.

M
aking my way along the impressive
tree-lined drive to this house, I feel like
Kevin McCloud when he goes back
to revisit the owners of a project after they’ve
lived there for a while.
For this is the rainbow unicorn Narnia
of house aspirations – the architectdesigned
self-build. Buying a plot of land
and commissioning a design exactly to your
specs. The whole Grand Designs fantasy.
I am deeply impressed even before I make it
through the front door by the spectacular setting,
on a hillside to the rural north of Hastings,
looking out over a panoramic expanse of Wealden
countryside. Nothing to jar the retina in sight.
It was a miracle to find such a plot, so it
wasn’t a surprise to hear that it took Steve
Ackhurst, a producer, now screenwriter, and
Bronwen Malcolm, an artist, 18 months of
hard searching. Then based in Clapham, they
first started looking in West Sussex to be near
family and gradually worked their way east.
As so often with forever-home stories, they put a
lot of time and energy into another site, before

Hills style.”

they found this one, but even beyond drainage issues, that
plot had a bad vibe around it, with tricky vendors in historic
conflict with neighbours, and eventually they walked away.
“We were on holiday when we heard about this one,”
says Steve, “and we came straight from the airport to see it,
walked across the land and put an offer in right there.”
There was good karma around this one – the land,
which had housed two holiday homes since the 1930s,
had been bequeathed to St Michael’s Hospice, which
was selling it to raise funds, so the deal was done.
The inspiration to build their own home came from
Steve’s architect father who had always wanted to build
his own house. They discussed their ideas with him,
before making a list comprising 60 names, gradually
narrowing it down in stages before meeting the final
three designers. So not a lightly-made decision.
Then there was the stage of conveying their vision, as
Bronwen explains. “There was a written brief and a mood
board of what we wanted to achieve. Practical details like
the number of bedrooms, wanting a pool, making the
most of the view, but also more generally how we live…”
Steve chips in, “We wanted a versatile house combining
the best of British 1930s houses with the lateral space of the
Hollywood Hills style.”
They moved in four years ago, after a two-and-a-half
year build, with all the usual angst and complications.
But it was definitely worth it. Standing at the top of the
stairs, just before turning into the kitchen – the living
spaces are all on the first floor, the bedrooms downstairs
– I pause to look out of the large window and it really
does have that LA vista, just without all the buildings
and cars. Instead, glorious peace and tranquillity.
It’s really quite an effort to drag yourself away from that
gorgeous view, but worth it, to then sit in the vaulted

ceiling space of the kitchen, at the 10-seater dining table,
next to a wall of windows with views to the east. There’s
another large window looking out to the main northerly
view and then another on the opposite wall, looking onto the
upward slope of the hillside through the pergola that runs
along the back of the house. And the pergola is not there just
to look pretty in the summer.
“It has nine vines planted on it,” says Steve. “In summer
the leaves shield the kitchen from the beating sun through
the windows and in the winter there are no leaves, so the heat
from the sun can get in.”
Not that heating the place is an issue, even with the
amazing vaulted 5.3 metre ceilings. It’s all supplied
from a ground-source heat pump and with triple-glazed
windows, a little goes a long way. “The large array of
solar PVs generates more than we can use,” says Steve.
“Selling the excess pays all our bills,” adds Bronwen.
Sitting with them at the table gives me the chance to really
take in the scale and detail of the house – and there is a lot
to process, because when you are in an unique house that has
been built from scratch, from the imagination of two owners
and a designer, it makes you realise that, lovely though they
are, all the houses you visit really fit into just a few categories.
Even old beamy Wealden farmhouses, Georgian
cottages, or Victorian mansions, with all their lovely
quirky historical details, are all of their types. But
I’ve never been in a house like this before – because
it’s the only one – and there is a lot to take in.
On this upper floor, the walls and towering ceilings
are all made from CLT – cross-laminated timber,
67 surrey-homes.co.uk
Above and left: The pool was Steve’s dream, a keen swimmer since
the age of six. It has a steam room and showers to the side
which Steve describes as “big boys’ plywood”. It’s very
strong and highly sustainable – a very important factor for
them – with a natural pattern a bit like knotty pine, but
beautiful. The effect has been softened, Steve explains, by
misting all the surfaces with one coat of Osmo oil.
Having absorbed all that information, I turn my
attention to the windows treatments – or more to what
wasn’t there: no bi-folds, no big sliding glass panels.
Steve explains: “Bi-folds have lots of black vertical lines
when they are closed, which obscure rather than frame a view,
and sliding doors have to have a wall to slide behind.”
Instead, they have large picture windows which don’t open,
interspersed with stable doors that do – either fully, or just the
top – which is a nice reference to the agricultural buildings
which are scattered throughout the surrounding landscape.
With all that absorbed, I can start to take in some of the
decorating details, like the collection of animal ‘skulls’ in various
materials, which they already had from their previous house. “The
first was a plywood stag,” says Bronwen. Which seems appropriate,
because they see a lot of deer in the surrounding landscape.
Another veteran from their last three houses is
a cantilevered Alvar Aalto chair that fits perfectly
in the space in front of the picture window.
“The things we already had fitted in,” says Steve, “we didn’t
have to buy much new furniture for the house.” What they
did buy, such as the plywood bar stools on the ‘social’ side of
the central island, came from London furniture makers Unto
This Last, who make everything from plywood in their Brick
Lane workshop, creating another uniting theme in the house.

This page: The master suite is entered via its bathroom. The
loo, basin and shower sit either side of a central pod
kitchen, which Bronwen explains “...is great for dinner
parties, because you can leave the messy stuff in there.”
There are two open doorways into the second kitchen,
which I later discover on our tour, is one of the themes of
the layout. It allows the cook direct access from the main
cooking area, while someone on the other side of the central
island can pop in for a glass, or something. It also invests
the whole space with a lovely flow – apart from loos, where
you want privacy, there isn’t a dead end in the whole house.
Popping into the storage kitchen for a peep – and
then coming out through the second entrance, because
I can – I notice a clever detail: shallow shelves built
into the sides of the entrance spaces, very handy for
jars at the kitchen end and glasses at the table end.
This rhythmic articulation of space is also evident in
the kitchen layout, with three parallel rectangles – the
long dining table (made from French oak floorboards),
the central island and the drawers and worktop
against the internal wall – dividing the room.
This repetition of shapes gives a sense of order, which is
further increased when Bronwen shows me the wonderfully
wide, gliding drawers which store all her equipment and
spices – she’s a keen cook. The joinery, with no handles, was
all by Matthew Smith, a friend and extremely talented joiner.
With a cup of tea inside me and feeling less overwhelmed
by the scale and fabulousness of the house, Steve

Ekselius,” says Steve. “She’s a furniture detective.”
and Bronwen lead the way back downstairs for
the full house tour, starting another floor down
with the subterranean 20-metre swimming pool,
which has my lower jaw hanging open again.
With added drama from the pool being lit from
within and an oversized Acctim clock, with showers
and a steam room alongside, the concrete space
is like something out of a futuristic movie.
The pool was Steve’s personal dream – he’s been
a keen swimmer since the age of six and does 20

This page: The three downstairs bedrooms all make the most
of the wonderful rural vistas. There’s no shortage of carefully
considered accessible storage throughout
to 30 minutes every day, swimming 40 to 60 lengths.
“We originally wanted a pool with a view, but
to get that we would have had to move the whole
house site and as it’s primarily an exercise pool,
we decided a subterranean setting was OK.”
And so did the advertising agency which recently shot a
commercial there, one of 20 campaigns shot at the house, via
location agencies. But from his own experience in the industry,
Steve puts his foot down at full-scale film shoots. “You’d
have 50 plus people in the house… I know what it’s like.”
Heading back up to ground level I notice the lovely polished
effect on the concrete floors and ask how they achieved it.
“They were ‘power floated’,” says Steve, which is a process
with a hand-operated machine to produce a smooth, dense
and level surface, “and then they become shiny with wear.”
In a pleasing contrast, the poured concrete walls are
more rugged looking, setting off artworks, such as the
eye-catching print in the hallway – ‘Inferno’ by Tobias
Till, a brilliantly detailed Sodom and Gomorrah vision
of London. Keen art collectors, they found this one
at the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy.
“We go round exhibitions separately,” says Bronwen,
“because we like to look at things differently. When we meet up
we both have something we want to show the other one – and
it was this print, we’d both known the other would love it.”
Proceeding towards the bedrooms, we pass something

that confirms why a bespoke house is such a dream – the
whole length of the back of the house is lined with a row
of cupboards, like a cloister of easily accessible, discreet

to the attic, shed and understairs cupboard for all the
kind of stuff that can be so simply accessed here.
There are three almost monastically, beautifully calm
bedrooms on this floor all with prospects over the view via the
picture window/stable door combination, one of them in use
as Bronwen’s studio, with fitted wardrobes and bedside tables
made by Matthew Smith, who also did the kitchen and the
library, with desks and desk shelving from Unto This Last.
Then we head back upstairs to see the master bedroom
suite, positioned on the far side of the sitting room,
windows on three sides and entered via its bathroom.
As in the kitchen, there are two doorways into the
bathroom, then two into the bedroom beyond, so
there is always that sense of flow and it allows light
to flood through the house from every side.

and fitted desks from Unto This Last
loo, basin and shower on either sides of a central pod (with
that storage at each end again), a striking difference from
most bathrooms, where all the fittings are round the edges,
with space in the middle. It’s very effective. When you
walk round the pod, you find a tub bath on the other side,
perfectly positioned looking up to the hill.
Back in the sitting room, the full scale of the house, with
that magnificent ceiling height is apparent again, with
a huge woodcut of Brooklyn Bridge by Simon Packard
doing it justice. The furniture in here is mid-century
classics with a B&B sofa, two Charles Eames leather
chairs with footstools and the less well-known and very
striking Etcetera 1972 lounge chair by Jan Ekselius.
This one is black and there’s a cream one in
the master bedroom. “Bronwen found them,”
says Steve. “She’s a furniture detective.”
I try it out for size and, settling onto its welcoming
organic shape, look around me and wonder how long I can
reasonably stay there. The rest of the day would be good…
This house is an extraordinary achievement. Not
just a lovely home for one family, it is a legacy for
future generations and an inspiration for everyone
who has ever dreamed of their own grand design.

PLAY with COLOUR
“Turmeric and terracotta will continue to be popular in 2020.
Both colours boast notes of warmth and bitterness, and can
be invitingly playful in small doses, yet rich enough to create a
dramatic tonal statement as well. I mix these colours with gold
metallic accessories and luxe fabrics for a modern, luxury take.”

We are loving blissful, blushing pinks this year – in a pared back natural palette they can add a touch of colour, or bring a
softer tone to more maximalised schemes. Plus, they look great with the deep greens and blues which are set to be big for 2020.

Studying your Surrey Home
Inspirational designs from
Morgan Stewart Interiors to
create your dream home office
The essence of an executive home office is
inspirational space, which combines work
with pleasure. Productivity and function
matter but so does your enjoyment of a
high quality environment. Quality and
elegance are personal concepts that depend
on the art, colour and spirit of place we
each enjoy, but we would still recognise
excellence in the choice of another.
Morgan Stewart Interiors design and
build executive home offices across
the UK and beyond to embody this
feeling, creating naturally productive
spaces which are a pleasure to enter.
Balancing Key Elements
As with a commercial office, we want to
understand how you use your home office.
Our designers consider your workflow, the

IT and communication requirements.

investments you can make, for productivity
and for your long term health.
If you need shelving, or storage this should
blend subtly into the design, rather than
being in the way. Traffic flow apart,
every ancillary furnishing item is there to
serve you, not the other way around.
This is not a reason to sacrifice form for
function, or reduce light and space. The basis
of good design is to resolve functionality
needs with ideas led by your vision for
your personal space. Colours you favour, or
materials you enjoy around you are primary
factors. Subtle additions which make you
feel at home should be considered, along
with how your office fits into your property.
You may have a substantial, separate
space available, or wish to blend a smaller
home office into the overall ambience
you enjoy. Privacy and a devoted
workspace can be achieved with either.
“Making an office at work feel
individual can matter, even more so
for your office at home. Our designer’s
work closely with you to ensure your
personality and taste are clearly
reflected”
Furnishing Your Home Office
An executive home office should feel like
a place you want to work and may need to
look as professional as you do if you meet
clients, colleagues, or contractors at home.
Comfortable seating arrangements are
important for this need and for you. A
fine office chair is one of the shrewdest
The centrepiece of your space may
well be an executive desk. This should
be carefully chosen to meet design
needs, match the way you work,
and suit the methodology you employ
for paperwork, or multiple screens.
Morgan Stewart & Personal Service
Making an office at work feel individual
can matter, even more so for your
office at home. Our designers
work closely with you to ensure your
personality and taste are clearly reflected.
From warm tones you love, to the flooring
of your choice, to featuring artistic pieces,
the office we build will be yours. Our job
is simply to make your wishes reality.
Every executive home office we design, shares
a principle. They are unique because
you are, and so is your approach
to work, and your need to merge
work with an individual home.
Morgan Stewart Interiors design staff are
highly experienced, they are happy to offer
advice and innovative solutions. Their task
still always begins with listening to you,
the home office you want is personal.

Luscious Lips (Lip FiLLer)
With age, the lips naturally become thinner
and lose their definition, and the v-shaped
area of the upper lip, known as Cupid’s
bow, is where you’re most likely to see this
happen.
Many people try to disguise the effects
of ageing in this area with make-up, but
it can bleed down the vertical wrinkles
and highlight the problem. If you’ve been
wondering how to look younger, lip fillers
are an easy answer because they’re quick,
affordable and non-invasive.
They can be the centrepiece of a makeover
that gives you youthful looking, plump lips
and a more defined smile. Because the lips
are sensitive, we apply local anaesthetic
cream about an hour before the procedure
to numb them. Dermal filler is injected,
usually into the upper rim of the lip to
define the Cupid’s bow, and immediately
afterwards you may experience small
pinpricks for a few hours.
There is often some mild redness of the
skin, but this settles by the next day and

Grab a
Bargain
Josephine Fairley picks her favourite
purse-friendly pick-me-ups
At this time of year, post-Christmas, post-tax bill (if you’re
self-employed), we often feel the pinch a little bit. But
ironically, isn’t that the very time we really deserve a bit
of a treat…? Nothing does that, for me, like a great beauty ‘find’.
Something to perk up a tired complexion, or revive a winterlacklustre
face, or work its aromatherapeutic magic on our spirits.
Over my years as a beauty editor, I’ve realised: you truly don’t
need to spend a fortune to find great products, but you do need
to know where to look. So for February, I thought I’d put together
a list of my 10 Best Beauty Bargains – face, body, hair and
make-up – which I return to, time and again. (Just one sadness
on that front, though: one of my go-to ‘beauty steal’ make-up
brands, Bourjois, late last year announced they were pulling out
of the UK market. I may just have to host a memorial service.)
TRUE Skincare Facial Oils, from £13.50 for 30ml. Fact:
most facial oils cost an arm and a leg (often four times or
more as much as this one). But from a female-founded
British skincare start-up, TRUE oils are organic, natural and
ethical, yet accessible in terms of price and availability (find
them at Holland & Barrett and Ocado, as well as TRUE’s
own website). The quality’s seriously fab; I especially like the
Nourishing Avocado & Evening Primrose Facial Oil, with its
deeply grounding scent of patchouli, palmarosa and vetiver.
Maybelline The Eraser Eye Perfect & Cover Concealer, £8.99. I first
discovered this when I set out to walk from Soho to the City
in an Arctic blast and had to nip into Superdrug for make-up
supplies after the biting cold make me weep most of my eye makeup
down my cheek. This brilliantly affordable concealer blends
beautifully via the sponge tip – it repaired my under-eye zone and
banished shadows with a dab or two. Can’t live without it, now.
SenSpa Hair & Scalp Mask, £7 for 300ml. You can find the
SenSpa range on the shelves of Waitrose, though its roots
are in award-winning Careys Manor spa in Hampshire.
Wonderfully aromatherapeutic, the line-up offers haircare,
bodycare and some fab bath treats, but my favourite is this
luxe-textured restorative hair mask. Lie back in the tub and let
the 97% natural mix of Abyssinian oil, lava clay and coconut
oil nourish winter-thirsty locks, while you breathe in the
divine essential oils of jasmine, cedarwood and ylang ylang.

Tisserand Paradise

Simple Skin Quench Sleeping Cream, £6.99
tisserand.com
for 50ml. ‘Sleeping creams’ are night creams
by another name, but have become a buzz
in the skincare universe. (I do slightly wonder if
it’s because they sound somehow sexier – we all spend so
much time dreaming of sleep, one way or another.) This is
a super-affordable version, from Simple’s hear-your-skinslurp-it-up
Water Boost range: you’ll feel your complexion’s
comfort level rising, but it’s not heavy at all, packing a
moisturising punch inside a formula that’s satiny and airy.

Daily Glow Mask,

Heathcote & Ivory Neroli & Lime Leaves Hand Cream Trio,
£5 for 3 x 30ml. Love Jo Malone Lime, Basil & Mandarin…?
You’ll also adore the scent of this, from Heathcote & Ivory
(who make the best hand creams at ANY price, in my book
– and a huge selection to choose from). The fragrance is as
cheery and sunshine-y as a smell gets – truly a breath of spring.
And these particular hand creams are delightfully pocket- or
handbag-sized, so there’s no excuse to leave home without one.
(Larger sizes and some fab other products also available in the
Neroli & Lime Leaves collection, at heathcote-ivory.com.)
Revlon Nail Enamel, £6.49. You really can’t find a more
durable nail polish than Revlon’s at any price, frankly.
The design of the bottle hasn’t changed in decades and
the formula is both chip-resistant and anti-fade, leaving
nails ultra-glossy, smooth-finished and glam. There are
now a staggering 47 shades to choose from, ranging from
sheer to opaque, metallic, chrome and shimmer. (NB:
different retailers stock different selections of colours.)
Tisserand Paradise Mood Mist, £9 for 50ml. This springs from
a collaboration between National Geographic and one of the
most established names in aromatherapy, featuring ingredients
which Tisserand promise are ‘sustainably-sourced’. There are
many different offerings within the Paradise collection for bath,
body and – here – for spritzing your home. What blew me
away when I first opened this up was that the first mandarinpowered
hit reminded me of a much-loved fragrance from
my youth, Goya Aqua Manda. (And I know a lot of you feel
equally nostalgic about that scent…) It also features jasmine
and grapefruit, ‘to inspire positivity, provide a dose of calm and
impart a warm inner glow’ – something
we could all use right now, for sure.
Sanctuary Spa 1 Minute Daily Glow Mask,
£14 for 75ml. Not perhaps quite as cheap as
most of the other products here, but still a great
buy. You know those mornings when you wake up, look in
the mirror and – sort of quote Peanuts’ Charlie Brown – just
want to go ‘bleeaurgh’? This is for those mornings. Just slather
the thickish, jelly-like, ever-so-slightly rough mask onto tiredlooking
skin, leave for 60 seconds and then remove (I like to
use a soft flannel). The granules buff, while a skin-brightening
cocktail of vitamin C extracts puts back the glow, ultra-fast.
Better You Magnesium Bath Flakes, £9.95 for 1k. Magnesium
is another ‘buzz’ in beauty circles: a mineral that’s readily
absorbed through the skin, restoring magnesium chloride
levels (which in turn aids with sleeplessness and stress).
About once or twice a week I soak in a bath infused with
these on their own (they’re unscented) – but I also add
generously to just about any other bath oil whenever I
want a darned good night’s sleep. The flakes are therapeutic
for psoriasis, eczema and other skin challenges, but they
really do soothe the mind as well as a weary body.
Beauty Bible Lip Balm, £6. Last, but by no means least,
this could look like a shameless plug, but I’d buy it
whatever brand it had on the packaging. Indeed, it’s the
only product my Beauty Bible co-author Sarah Stacey
and I have ever felt worthy of putting our website/books’
name to: a chubby, amazingly nourishing lip balm that
lasts all winter long, has no taste or scent, and is perfectly
protective. (It’s stocked exclusively at victoriahealth.com.)

your Radiance
Dr Kim Prescott’s top tips for beautiful skin
After a few months of exposure to
central heating – or sun and icy
cold reflecting off the slopes, for
those who have managed a ski trip this
winter - many of us start to notice our skin
looking dull and tired. With Valentine’s
dates on the horizon, it’s time to consider
ways to restore your dewy complexion.
EXFOLIATION
There’s no need for me to stress the
importance of proper cleansing, but not all
of us exfoliate regularly. A fruit acid facial
wash left on the skin for a few minutes
in the shower, or glycolic acid overnight
cream used once or twice a week can help
improve the texture of your skin. Glycolic
acid helps to promote cellular turnover in the
skin, increase penetration of serums, refine
skin tone and texture, and most importantly
before a big event, helps to improve light
reflection (essential for enviable selfies).
HYDRATION
Adequately hydrated skin appears plumper
and reflects light better, and can be
surprisingly hard to maintain in winter. In
addition to using a humidifier, a moisturiser
rich in hyaluronic acid will help the skin retain
moisture. Hyaluronic acid also has healing
and anti-inflammatory properties and helps
to reduce the irritation of dry skin. If your
current moisturiser is not quite
doing the trick, then try
adding a layer of
hyaluronic acid
to your skin
regimen
(under
your usual
moisturiser).
NUTRITION
FOR THE SKIN
With a glut of
excellent products
available, all with
their own set of avid
fans, it can be diffi cult
to decide which ones are
worth the investment. There
are a number of ingredients
to look out for when you’re
needing a skin boost, but if I had
to choose, my top picks would be:
Vitamin C
A good quality product with the optimal
structure, concentration and acidity for
penetration to the deep layers of the skin.
Vitamin C is beneficial in skin over the age
of 35. It is a potent antioxidant, helping
to reverse skin damage caused by sun
and pollution, and is an essential building
block for making new collagen. Products
which don’t penetrate as deeply can
still help brighten skin, so less advanced
products still have a role in younger skin.
Niacinamide
A relative newcomer to skin care,
niacinamide (vitamin B3) is another
potent anti-aging ingredient, used in
both nutrition and skin science. It is best
known for reducing the appearance
of large pores, uneven skin tone and
fine lines. Clinical studies suggest it
may also have the potential to reduce
the DNA damage that leads to nonmelanoma
skin cancers, so it is useful in
anyone with a history of sun damage.
Peptides
Peptides are another group of ingredients
that are current hot favourites in the press,
These have multiple benefits and are
key ingredients in anti-aging products.
High concentrations have been shown to
stimulate collagen and elastin, the scaffold
of the skin, promoting strength and elasticity,
and encouraging smoother, firmer skin.
ENCOURAGE CELL TURNOVER
I get a lot of questions about retinol, the
rock-star ingredient in anti-aging skin
science. Retinol (vitamin A) slows the
breakdown of collagen, and encourages
thicker, firmer, more even-toned skin. It
does this by encouraging cell turnover in
every layer, thus playing an important role
in maintaining youthful suppleness (along
with a host of other benefits). Winter is a
good time to introduce it to your regimen
if you’re not already a committed user.
FIRMING AND TIGHTENING
Multiple effective technologies are available
to help promote firming and tightening in
the skin, and over the past couple of years
we have been seeing the rise of a plethora
of SuperFacials. Every clinic has its own
version – mostly combination modalities
that exfoliate, tighten, plump and infuse
nutrients. The best one is really the one
that works for you and your budget. At the
PSMD Clinic, we have recently brought on
board the Geneo 3-in-1 SuperFacial and I
have to admit that our team are thoroughly
enjoying making use of it on each other!
Dr Kim Prescott practices aesthetic and
lifestyle medicine in Cobham, Esher and

Wellbeing
Kind on the Inside
Is depression a gut reaction? Henrietta Norton explores
the importance of supporting your digestive system
Currently 3.5 million people in
the UK are being prescribed
anti-depressants. But is it
as simple as a psychological issue?
Research would suggest not and
in the last few years, Nutritional
Medicine has made substantial
developments to explore the link
between mental and physical health.
GUT AS THE ‘SECOND BRAIN’
Functional gastro-intestinal (GI)
problems, such as irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS), are commonly linked
to anxiety and mood changes. The GI
tract has over 100 million neurons and
has the largest collection of neural tissue
in the body (after the brain) called
the enteric nervous system (ENS).
The level of good bacteria in the gut
greatly contributes to the health of the
ENS and it is argued by some experts
that one reason for the increase in
depressive disorders may be due to an
imbalance in this bacteria, sometimes
due to our exposure to antibiotics or
dietary deficiencies from an early age.
An inflammatory subject
The gut and colon are the principle sites
for the production of body chemicals
that increase the level of inflammation in
the body (known as pro-inflammatory
cytokines). These cytokines also have
the ability to affect the health of the
brain and an association has been made
between the level of inflammation in
the body and depressive and anxiety
disorders. It may also explain why a bout
of illness can affect our
mental wellbeing too.
Prevention starts from conception
Growing evidence shows that our
sensitivity to stress, anxiety and
depression as adults is already
programmed in infancy. Essentially,
the level of stress encountered in early
life sensitizes us to a certain level of
adversity. High levels of stress can
result in hypersensitivity to stress as
well as adult depression later, due to
changes in our stress response network.
Of great clinical interest is that this
group of inflammation-sensitive
depressives tend not to respond well
to anti-depressive medication.
SUPPORTING YOUR
NERVOUS SYSTEM
B vitamins – The B vitamins are
essential for energy production, for
the normal functioning of the nervous
system, and vitamin B5 in particular
for production of the glucocorticoid
hormones in the adrenals, such as
cortisol. Good sources include whole
grains, eggs, beans and lentils, a wide
range of vegetables, fish and lean
meats. Taking a B Vitamin Complex
can be very supportive. The Wild
Nutrition B Complex Plus also
includes vitamin C, magnesium and
the herb Ashwagandha shown to
support healthy cortisol regulation.
Magnesium – Magnesium is essential
for energy production and the
production of neurotransmitters,
including dopamine and serotonin.
It is quickly used up when we are
stressed. The best examples are
nuts and seeds, buckwheat, greens,
such as spinach and kale, and fish
and seafood. If sleep is an issue
then taking an additional 80mg
of Food-Grown Magnesium at
night can be a great support.
Good bacteria – Essential Fatty
Acids are also required to help these
‘friendly’ bacteria stick to the gut wall,
reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines
and improve brain function.
Food sensitivities – More recently a
large body of research has highlighted
the link between ‘gluten sensitivity’, gut
health, inflammation and depression.
Gluten sensitivity can not only reduce
absorption of nutrients from the diet
but increase the inflammatory process.
FOODS TO KEEP YOUR
GUT AND MIND HAPPY
Eggs – Use steamed asparagus
to dip into boiled eggs as a
morning mood booster.
Avocado – For an extra boost of
healthy fats, slice chunks of avocado
into your salad or onto your morning
toast, drizzle over virgin olive oil
and add flakes of wild salmon.
Wild Salmon – Mix with horseradish
and plain yogurt to make a
salmon pâté for a quick
mood-supporting snack.
Quinoa – Use as an alternative
to rice or wheat pasta for
managing anxiety and stress.

Earn your après ski and dodge injuries with
Sarah Maxwell’s exercise tips for getting ski-fit
Flights and accommodation
booked, lift passes sorted,
snazzy new ski jacket ready
to burst out of its wrapping. Did
you remember everything?
After the last few weeks of buzzing
around getting organised for
Christmas and putting yourself last in
order to make everyone’s Christmas
merry, are you even fit to ski?
Skiing is an intensely physical
activity and one that
you are likely to be
doing for several hours
a day and at altitude.
Here are my tips to
help you get ski-fit by
improving your fitness
now so you can make the
most of your precious
time on the slopes,
minimise injury and
maximise your enjoyment!
Get Cardio Active: Increasing
your general cardiovascular fitness
by cycling, running, circuit
training, or even walking, can
make a big difference as long as
you get your heart pumping.
Strong on
the Slopes
Strength Training: Look out for the
many ski fit classes in the area this
season. Cross-fit, kettle bells and
strength-based circuits are really
“Being flexible
will help your
skiing in general
as well as helping
you recover
much more easily
when you do
take a tumble”
effective. The key areas to focus on are
the legs, back and core. Working on
your core allows your legs to work as
shock absorbers in all kinds of terrain.
Squats and lunges in abundance will
make a huge difference to your leg
strength. Not a member of a gym? I
have recently found a great app called
SkiFit which shows you ski specific
exercises that you can do at home.
Flexibility and Balance:
being flexible will help
your skiing in general
as well as helping you
recover much more
easily when you do
take a tumble. Balance
work and yoga classes
will make a real
difference and might
even help you fall
over less. I have found
that regular standing
yoga poses have really made a
difference to how often I fall over!
Warming Up: When you’re there –
don’t forget to warm up! A lot of time
is spent in chairlifts and gondolas and
by the time you get to the top your
body will have cooled down. Use
those few moments waiting for others
to warm up, loosen and prepare
your body for the fun to come.
Exercise of
the month:
THE PLANK
The plank strengthens your
spine, shoulders, engages your
abdominals, glutes and hamstrings;
if you do nothing else prior to
hitting the slopes, do this!
To perform a plank, bend your
elbows and rest your weight on
your forearms, ensuring the rest
of your body is fully laid out
behind you on the floor. Engage
your stomach muscles, raise your
pelvic floor and squeeze your
bottom. Bring your feet beneath
yourself so you are balanced on
your forearms and toes. Hold your
body in a straight position for
10-60 seconds depending upon
your fitness level. Slowly release
back into the starting position.
Repeat 3 times.
✣
If you find this position too
difficult at first, lower your
knees to the floor and build
up your strength gradually.
✣
Now go and have a ball!

• 3 tbsp tomato purée
• 1 × 400ml tin of fullfat
coconut milk
• 200g leafy greens, like chard,
leaves and stems finely chopped
• Yogurt, to serve (optional)
For the spice mix:
• 1½ tsp ground turmeric
• 2 tbsp ground cumin or 1½ tbsp
cumin seeds, roughly ground
• 2 tbsp ground coriander or
1½ tbsp coriander seeds
• 2 tbsp black mustard
seeds, roughly ground
• Pinch of chilli flakes
or chilli powder
• Big pinch of sea salt
and black pepper
For the pink pickled onions:
• 2 large red onions, thinly sliced
• Juice of 2 limes or 4 tbsp vinegar
• Big pinch of sea salt
• 2 tsp maple syrup (optional)
1Preheat the oven to fan
220°C/Gas mark 9. Melt 2
tablespoons of the ghee or oil on
a large baking tray in the oven.
2Meanwhile, mix the spice mix
in a small bowl and slice up
three of the parsnips into about
18 wedges, say 5cm × 1.5cm,
then toss the parsnip wedges
in the oil on the tray with half
of the spice mix. Pop in the
oven for about 30-35 minutes,
tossing halfway through with
the maple syrup, until golden
and going crispy at the edges.
3In a large pan, fry the
onions in the remaining
2 tablespoons of ghee over a
medium heat for 10 minutes,
stirring occasionally, while you
get on with everything else.
4Add the remaining half of the
spice mix, plus the garlic and
ginger and fry for 3 minutes.
5Add the diced parsnips and
lentils, the chopped coriander
stems and the tomato purée and
let fry. After a minute, add the
coconut milk, then fill up the
tin four times with hot water
(1.6 litres) and pour in, stirring
well. Pop the lid on, bring to
the boil and immediately turn
down to a medium heat and let
simmer for 20 minutes. Stir a
few times throughout to make
sure the lentils don’t stick to the
pan. Add more liquid if you
think it needs it or if you like
your dahl soupier, like I do.
6Meanwhile, scrunch and
massage the red onion in
a bowl with the lime juice,
salt and maple syrup, if using,
for 30 seconds, then leave to
bathe in the salty lime juice.
7Once the lentils and parsnips
in the pan are cooked,
add the chopped greens, pop
the lid on so they steam for
3-5 minutes until just tender,
then taste for seasoning.
8Serve up each bowl, topped
with the roasted parsnips,
coriander leaves, pink pickled
onions and their juices and a
dollop of yogurt, if you like.
Tip: If you have vegetable
stock, use it instead of hot
water for extra flavour.
Waste not: Swap the parsnips for
carrots, sweet potato, squash or
cauliflower and you can use kale
or spinach in place of the chard.

Rescue Noodle Soup
with Leftover Chicken
Serves: 4
Prep & cooking time: 30 mins
There’s nothing quite like a warming
bowl of homemade soup to make you
feel a thousand times better. If I’ve
had a Sunday roast chicken, I make
this on a Monday to get a great boost
of vegetables in. It’s based on store
cupboard and freezer ingredients like
frozen peas, onion, garlic and carrots,
though you could swap in anything
that needs using up. You can up the
amount of vegetables or noodles
here, so adjust to your liking. Post-
Christmas and other celebrations, this
is a fantastic way to use up leftover
turkey or any other leftover meats.
• 1 tbsp ghee or butter
• 1 large leek or onion, diced
• 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
• 1.2 litres vegetable stock or bone broth
• 1 big handful of a mix of fresh
herbs, like parsley and dill,
leaves and stems chopped
• 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves or
1 tsp dried
• 1 bay leaf, dried or fresh
• 2 celery sticks, diced
• 2 carrots, thinly sliced
• 2 handfuls of 2cm chunks of root veg,
like sweet potato, squash, pumpkin,
potato or (in the summer) courgette
• 400g noodles or spaghetti, any type
• 1 tsp olive oil
• 300g mix of cabbage, rainbow
chard and/or chard, stems finely
chopped and leaves shredded
• 300g leftover shredded chicken
• Juice of ¼ lemon or 1 tsp
apple cider vinegar
• 2 big handfuls of frozen
peas or sweetcorn
• Sea salt and black pepper
1In a large wide saucepan, heat the
ghee or butter and fry the leek or
onion over a medium heat for 8 minutes
while you prep everything else. Add
the garlic and fry for another minute.
2Add stock or broth, chopped parsley
and dill stems, thyme, bay leaf,
celery, carrot, root veg and some salt and
pepper, pop the lid on and cook for 15
minutes until the carrot is almost tender.
3Meanwhile, cook noodles or
spaghetti in a separate pan until
almost tender (check the label for
suggested timings), then drain and
rinse under cold water to stop them
cooking further. Toss with the olive oil
to stop them clumping and set aside.
to your soup pan: add
4Back the chopped cabbage and
chard stems, shredded chicken,
lemon juice or vinegar and cook
for a few more minutes.
5Add the chard leaves, frozen peas
or sweetcorn and cooked noodles
or spaghetti for a final 2 minutes so
that the chard wilts, the peas cook and
the noodles/spaghetti heat through.
6Season to taste and serve up
straight away, topped with
the fresh herb leaves.
Waste Not:
You don’t have to use noodles here,
you can add any pasta shapes you
like so just use whatever odds and
ends of pasta packets you have.
You could even add the pasta
straight into the soup to cook
and save on using a second pan.
Flexi Swap:
For a vegetarian version, swap the
chicken for 500g roughly chopped
mushrooms and a pinch of dried
seaweed or seaweed salt. Sometimes
I add even more garlic and a thumb
of grated ginger, plus 1tsp ground
turmeric for an extra boost. Try
adding a tablespoon of miso or
tamari just before serving or swap
the herbs for coriander and mint.

Tahini Choc Chip Cookies
Makes: 16 cookies,
Preparation time: 10 mins
Cooking time: 15 mins
The vegan version of these are just as
delicious, none of us can decide which we
love the most. Store these cakey cookies
in an airtight container for 5 days. You
could warm them briefly in the oven to
give them a little crispening boost. The
dough freezes well so double up and save
half for a rainy day. Just defrost, then slice
into portions before putting in the oven.
• 2 eggs
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 4 tbsp maple syrup
• 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 150g light tahini
• 110g smooth nut butter
• 100g good-quality dark chocolate,
broken up into squares, or chips
• 30g black and/or white sesame seeds
• Pinch of sea salt
1Preheat the oven to fan 170°C/
Gas mark 5. Line a large baking
tray with reusable baking paper.
2In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs then
mix in the baking powder, maple syrup and
vanilla extract. Add the tahini and nut butter
and mix together until very well combined.
3Roughly chop the chocolate (if not
using chips) and fold through the
batter along with the sesame seeds.
4Measure out 16 balls of the cookie batter,
roughly 1 tablespoon each, and bake
for 10-15 minutes on the lined baking tray
(making sure to leave a little room between
each one) until the cookies are just set.
5Remove from the oven, sprinkle
with a little sea salt and allow to
cool on a wire rack before serving.
Flexi Swap:
For vegans, replace the 2 eggs with 1 large
mashed ripe banana. You can also swap the
nut butter for the same amount of a seed
butter or tahini for a nut-free alternative.

Plant Hunters
Sue Whigham explores the origins of many popular plant species and how they were discovered
I
must say that when my son and daughter-in-law
announced that they were going to take a sabbatical
in the summer of 2019 and, with their daughters
aged six and four, travel to Colombia, I initially had
alarming visions of dangerous jungle trails, groups of
heavily armed FARC rebels and threat of kidnap.
I suppose what I was thinking of is what happened to
Tom Hart Dyke from Lullingstone Castle and his travelling
companion, Paul Winder, back in 2000. They found
themselves in the inhospitable jungle of the Darién Gap
between Panama and Colombia with Tom following his wild
enthusiasm for orchids and Paul in his pursuit of adventure.
They were kidnapped by a rebel group and spent nine
months in their company. Since then, Tom, a modern day
plant hunter, has undertaken many other plant hunting trips,
including one to Central Peru in 2009 where he came upon
an entire clump of Puya raimondii (Queen of the Andes)
flourishing at over 14,000 feet where virtually nothing else
grows. This particular bromeliad is on the endangered list in
the wild. To see the plant flower must be extraordinary. Some
of the flower spikes are over 44ft tall with each producing over
10,000 creamy white flowers. And to cap it all, the flowers
are pollinated by hummingbirds. Can you just imagine it?
And then, in a chance conversation at a recent meeting of
the local Hardy Plant Society, I got talking to a friend who
said she was related, she knew not how, to Reginald Farrer
who made his name with his book, My Rock-Garden, in
1907. This book kindled a huge interest in alpine plants and
rockeries amongst British horticulturalists of the time. She
also grows and loves alpine plants so it must be in the genes.
Reginald was born in 1880 in Clapham, North Yorkshire,
and was heir to the estate of Ingleborough Hall where some of
his plant introductions are still to be found. He was seen as an
eccentric and somewhat difficult man but his scope of exploration
and search for, in particular, alpine plants which started in
the European Alps led to expeditions further east taking
in, amongst others, countries such as Japan and Korea,
Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as well as two forays into China.
I spotted one of his introductions from China, Viburnum
farreri (fragrans) in full fragrant flower at the weekend.
I like the story of him wanting to replicate a plant covered
rock face that he’d spotted in Ceylon. He rowed out onto a

Left: In 2000, modern-day plant hunter Tom Hart Dyke
was captured, along with his friend Paul Winder, by a rebel
group in The Darién Gap while on an expedition to discover
orchids. They wrote about their ordeal in their best-selling
book, The Cloud Garden
lake near his home, loaded his shotgun with seeds collected
on one of his expeditions and fired it into the nearest rock
face. Many of them took and this piece of Yorkshire became
the only true natural rock garden in the country at the time.
According to some records, active plant hunting dates
from 1495 BC when Egyptian pharaoh, Queen Hatshepsut,
commissioned an expedition to go to Somalia in search
of incense trees, Commiphora myrrha, the tree from which
the resin, myrrh, is derived.
And subsequently the Romans, as
they expanded their Empire, whilst
not actively plant hunting, introduced
non-native plants to our shores as
foodstuffs. Think of the ubiquitous
ground elder and the rather glamorous
umbellifers, ‘Alexanders’ that grow
along the coast in Kent and Sussex.
After that, medieval monks would
have exchanged medicinal plants
through their monasteries both here and
in Europe. Up until the mid sixteenth
century, most new plants would have come from Europe until
the Middle East became a source of horticultural treasure as
the plant hunters of the time spread their nets further afield.
And in the 17th century came two hugely influential
generations of the Tradescant family. John Tradescant the
elder, (1570-1638) was gardener to Charles I and his son,
John the younger (1608-1662), was gardener to Charles II’s
wife, Catherine of Braganza. They both travelled extensively
in North America returning with hitherto unknown

plants, amongst them the tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera,
the swamp cypress, Taxodium distichum, plane trees and
pineapples. They are both buried in the churchyard of St
Mary at Lambeth, which stands close to the gatehouse of
Lambeth Palace. The church was de-consecrated in the 1970s
and in 1977 became the Museum of Garden History.
If you have a chance to go to Lambeth Palace Gardens,
and it is open to the public on certain days, you can see
a particularly fine specimen of Liliodendron tulipifera
there – look out for the pineapples on the columns
of nearby Lambeth Bridge which commemorate the
Tradescant’s introduction of such an exotic fruit.
Subsequently, The Royal Horticultural Society, founded
in 1804 ‘for the improvement of horticulture’, sponsored
a number of important collectors who braved incredible
hardship in far flung countries of the
world to feed the ongoing demand
for anything new and exotic. They
included famous names such as
Robert Fortune, George Forrest,
David Douglas and Frank Kingdon-
Ward, all of whose exploits are, quite
frankly, hair-raising. Both the RHS
and the Royal Botanic Gardens at
Kew continue now to work with
people on plant and seed collecting
forays, including Tom Hart Dyke.
Sue and Bleddyn Wynn-Jones of
Crug Farm Plants in North Wales were originally farmers
but combined their love of plants and travelling more than
20 years ago to travel the globe seeking out specimens
that grow in an equitable climate and which will therefore
survive our weather conditions. They travel together or
sometimes with friends and fellow botanists. Their usual
modus operandi is to leave their nursery in the autumn for
two or three months, having chosen a country and read up
on the flora growing there and those plants they think

Above: Queen of the Andes, Puya raimondii, flourishing in its natural habitat. The flower spikes can reach as much as 44ft tall
might be hardy enough for our climate in England.
They make contact with local universities and work
with local botanists sharing information and knowledge.
They also follow strict quarantine rules, a must these days
to guarantee biosecurity. Usually Bleddyn sends any seeds
he has collected by runner to Sue at ‘base camp’ where she
sets to cleaning, drying and packaging them up. The whole
procedure is a lengthy one as often the quantity of seed
is small and germination can, in some cases, take years.
The walled garden at their nursery is full of exotic looking
plants and unfamiliar genera. Their Chelsea garden in the
Royal Pavilion last year showed an interesting selection of
plants for dry shade and included plants such as unusual
aspidistera – just what we need with ever increasing
parched summers in the South East – from Vietnam and
South China as far as I can remember. The oreopanax
they grow is very exotic and rather fabulous. As is the
hardy Schefflera taiwaniana with huge and jungly leaves.
They have an interesting website, to say the least.
So plant hunting continues with entrepreneurial private
nurseries collecting plants and seeds from countries which
weren’t always open for exploration. And like the plant
hunters of old, they are highly motivated as they were
and perhaps a little bit obsessed. They have found hardier
forms; have discovered plants with ‘garden potential’
and plants which will form the basis of hybridising
more and more interesting and beautiful varieties.
I remember visiting ‘backstage’ in the wondrous
Kirstenbosch Garden in Cape Town really quite a few
years ago and then they had people scouring other
parts of South Africa for plants that might prove to
be garden worthy in Europe. It all took time and each
plant would be grown on and observed long before
they were launched on to the horticultural public.
Imagine how dull our gardens might have been but for
the plant hunters and how lucky we are to have a climate
that can accommodate such a huge range of plants. There
is even a Puya raimondii growing at the World Garden at
Lullingstone. I wonder if Tom Hart Dyke grew it from
seed. I know that the plant, being monocarpic, needs to
and does produce literally thousands of seeds before dying.

Naked Attraction
Jo Arnell strips the garden back to beautiful winter basics
Winter can stretch on into spring sometimes,
remaining colourless and drab for longer than
necessary, dragging its grey heels even as the
days lengthen and the green shoots start peeking through.
Bare branches and tree tracery stand out against the winter
landscape and although the buds are swelling on woody
plants, they won’t unfurl into leaves for months yet.
Look closely at the twiggy skeletons; as you get familiar
with them you start to see that each species, when grown
unimpeded, has a unique and beautiful silhouette. Let’s
celebrate the pared back beauty of those that look good
naked and maybe even plant some in the garden.
BARE-BARKED BEAUTIES
Our native silver birch is graceful and elegant enough – its
white bark fissured with black, thin besom broom branches
wafting in the wind – but if you want to grow a really
showy white birch, try a Himalayan one: Betula utilis var.
Jacquemontii ‘Grayswood Ghost’ has stark, bone-white
trunks. Some gardeners even wash their trees to remove
algae and keep the bark looking perfectly white. They do
look stunning, freshly cleaned and gleaming in the winter
light. It takes a certain kind of determination to wash trees.
Prunus serrula (Tibetan cherry), has polished, mahoganyred
bark that gently peels away in gleaming curls – try
walking past without reaching out your hand. This is a
good all-year-round ornamental tree, with interest from
blossom in spring and lovely autumn foliage too.
I also love the bark on Eucalyptus, but it is fast
growing and will very quickly escape your clutches to
grow into a 50ft monster. There are other trees with
irresistibly tactile bark more suited to smaller gardens.
Some Acers, known more usually for their foliage, have
ornamental bark as well as brilliant autumn colour. The Snake
Bark Maple, Acer davidii, has green and silver bark in snake
pattern stripes. Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’, has gleaming
coral-coloured bark, pale
lime green emerging foliage
and golden autumn tints.
Acer griseum has shaggy
cinnamon-coloured bark
that glows when backlit
by the winter light. A.
griseum is a slow growing
tree, eventually reaching
a mere 10ft, so it’s a
perfect choice for a

can sometimes be made into multi-stems, or ‘treelets’,
depending on the elegance of their stems. If you have an
old shrub that is about to be radically chopped (or removed
altogether), look at it carefully and see whether it could
be transformed into a multi-stem. This could be a much
kinder and less expensive way of improving the view.

small space. It grows on chalk and on alkaline soil too –
something many acers don’t like. Most acers are hardy, but
prefer a sheltered site, out of the wind and scorching sun.
MAGIC WANDS
Cornus (Dogwood) stems will provide brilliant winter colour,
especially if you have a large garden and can plant them en
masse. Try groups of Cornus by a pond, or damp part of
the garden. Dogwoods will grow in most soil conditions,
and they actually quite like damp or heavy soils. They
don’t mind shady conditions, but their stem colour shows
up best in full sun. Dogwoods will send out suckers, so
plant them where they have room to spread. The stems also
look good cut and poked into winter containers, bringing
height and structure – they may even take root…
For the best stem colour, dogwoods should be cut
back hard in mid-spring to encourage the growth of new
young stems which have the strongest colour. Some will
cope with hard pruning better than others – generally the
more vigorous the growth, the harder you can cut back.
After pruning, mulch around the roots with compost or
other well-rotted organic material, but not right up to the
stems, as this could cause them to rot. Mulching will feed
and condition the soil – and also help retain moisture.
Dogwoods won’t get too tall, because they are regularly
pruned to the base. Some of the best for stem colour are:
Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’, which has bright red new growth, while
the aptly named C. sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ has young
stems that literally look as if they’re on fire – in shades of
SHOWING SOME LEG
Carefully pruned, some trees can be crown lifted by
pruning out the lowest branches to make the main trunk
more visible. Or they can be pruned to have more than
one trunk, which turns them into elegant multi-stemmed
versions. This works well with birch, cherries and is especially
effective with Amelanchier lamarkii. The result is elegant
and sculptural and still allows for underplanting. Many
show gardens at flower shows use multi-stemmed trees
as focal points in planting schemes. Overgrown shrubs

‘Deben’ is a deciduous shrub with small pink buds
opening to become highly fragrant white flowers.
These plants are well suited to a path-side position,
where you can catch their exquisite fragrance, but
they need to be able to bow out and retreat into
the background once they come into leaf as they
are fairly dull for most of the rest of the year.
yellow/orange tinged with red.
Cornus stolonifera ‘Flaviramea’
has yellow-green stems;
Cornus alba ‘Kesselringii’
has young growth of a
deep purple colour.
Willows can (literally)
run about in the
garden, so should be carefully positioned,
as they can be invasive and hard to remove. They are fast
growing and some have brightly coloured stems to rival
the dogwoods. Salix ‘Britzensis’ is one of the best for
stem colour, but will need regular pollarding or coppicing
in early spring for fresh new stems. Just like Cornus,
Willows are best grown near water or in boggy places.
Rubus is an amazing ornamental blackberry with
powdery white stems that clump up to form thickets of
living barbed wire. It will need a fair amount of space
and looks striking next to dogwoods, a look that could be
perfected with an underplanting of cyclamen, snowdrops
and the black grass Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’.
STARK STEMS & SEEDHEADS
Plants like Teasels, Phlomis and Sedum have long lasting
seedheads that stand stoutly through the winter weather,
glistening in the frost and providing architectural interest at
lower levels. They are also useful for wildlife – birds will eat
the seeds and insects will use hollow stems for refuge until
the spring. Tempting as it is to tidy everything up in the
autumn, if herbaceous plants die gracefully, they can add a
layer of ephemeral, ghostly beauty in the winter landscape.
BARELy BLOSSOMING
Late winter and early spring flowering shrubs, if they are
deciduous, tend to blossom on bare stems. They are usually
pale coloured and can be highly scented, often growing in
semi-shade at the edge of woodland where early emerging
insects, moths and beetles will be lured in by their perfume.
Grow a winter-scented plant somewhere near to the house
– by the front or back door, near a path or gate, where you
will be able to walk past regularly, inhaling as you go.
Chimonanthes praecox and Lonicera ‘Winter Beauty’,
a winter flowering honeysuckle have powerful perfume.
Plant them where they can fade into the background
once the flowers are over. If you have the space for a
specimen, try a Witch Hazel – Hamamelis x intermedia
‘Pallida’ has scented flowers that climb its bare branches
like little yellow spiders. Viburnum x bodnantense
UNDERGARMENTS
Bare stems and branches are companionably set off with
contrasting carpets of late winter and early spring flowers
beneath them – try Cyclamen coum, Anemone blanda, or bulbs
like Snowdrops, Winter Aconite and Crocus. These are all
little treasures and best seen in massed throngs beneath the
trees, where they make the most of the light before the dense
canopy of leaves closes in on them. There’s the wonderful and
aptly named ‘February Gold’ narcissus for an uplifting throng
of golden daffodil without too much floppy leaf later on.
Hellebores are good and hardy, often flowering where
not much else will and are a great asset in the garden
at this time of the year. Helleborus niger (the Christmas
Rose) flowers around now and then a little later comes the
showier Helleborus orientalis cultivars, which have flowers
in shades from darkest burgundy through to purest white.
Low-growing evergreens look good next to bare
stems – try the scented Christmas box Sarcococca
confusa, slow growing dwarf conifers, or hardy ferns
such as polystichums for all year foliage interest.
Structure is vital in the garden, perhaps even more
so in winter when we can’t distract with flowers and
foliage. Architecture, focal points and framework
plants come in different forms and those with elegant
skeletons, or striking bark – that might be overlooked
during the rest of the year, shine out beautifully. Now
please excuse me while I go out and wash some trees.

A Dietary
Alternative?
Hilary Wilce shares new research into
ADHD from King’s College
Anyone who has to cope with an impulsive and
hyperactive child – and that’s hundreds and thousands
of parents and almost all teachers – will know how
challenging it is to try to deal with this restless energy.
But two new pieces of research offer chinks of hope
that dietary supplements could lessen both the symptoms
and prevalence of so-called ADHD (attention deficit/
hyperactivity disorder). Research carried out at King’s
College London shows that omega-3 fish oil supplements
can improve the attention span of some children and
adolescents with ADHD. In fact, the researchers say
their findings could pave the way for some children to
be given a dietary alternative to the stimulant medicine
now routinely prescribed to hyperactive children.
Meanwhile, another study recently published by the
Barcelona Institute for Global Health, suggests that a
mother’s diet in pregnancy may be able to reduce the
chance of her baby developing ADHD. This, too, centres
on the best balance between two essential fatty acids,
omega-3 and omega-6. It’s already known
that children with ADHD tend to have a
higher omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. But now
it seems that mothers-to-be with that same
higher ratio may be at greater risk of having an
ADHD child, and the higher the imbalance,
the more a child is likely to show ADHD
symptoms at the age of seven. These researchers
point out that the brain takes a particularly long time
to develop in a foetus, so could be more vulnerable to
an unbalanced nutrient supply than other organs.
Research is constantly adding tiny glimmers to
our understanding of the way that diet affects our
brains, and when you add them all together it seems
increasingly clear that what we eat does (not surprisingly)
have an impact on our mood and behaviour.
It now seems certain, for example, that a good diet,
along with enough sleep and regular exercise, can help
conditions such as anxiety and depression. And common
sense tells us that consuming only fizzy drinks, fried
“The benefits
of a good diet
need to build
up over time”
chicken and chocolate bars is not going to keep anyone
healthy, strong and emotionally well-balanced.
However, the picture for ADHD is very complex and no
one is yet suggesting a diet-based treatment for all hyperactive
children – especially when there are so many different ways
the condition shows itself and so many possible causes.
The King’s College study, for example, shows that giving
children omega-3 supplements seems to benefit those
with very low levels of it in their blood, while children
with balanced blood don’t show the same results, or may
show negative symptoms. And the effect
is only known to work on attention span,
not other ADHD traits like impulsivity.
Even so, paediatric nutritionists suggest that
children with ADHD could benefit from a diet
of fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts, wholegrain
bread and pasta, and oily fish like salmon
or mackerel. They point out that ADHD
children are often low in magnesium, iron, zinc and fibre, so
foods that include these could be beneficial. And they also
suggest limiting red meat, any dairy, salty snacks and sugar.
This isn’t easy, especially when so many hyperactive children
are picky eaters who don’t sit quietly for regular meals – and
when the urge to calm a child down with biscuits and sweets
might be especially strong! But it seems important to persist
as the benefits of a good diet need to build up over time.
And while nutritious food might not ‘cure’ a
child’s ADHD there will always be tangible benefits
to health and wellbeing from a good diet – as there
will be for all children, hyperactive or not.

Jane Howard’s
Fables from
the Farm
Missing her feathered friends, Jane
restocks her flock with rare breeds
With the evenings beginning
to draw out and the first
crocuses poking through
it’s just about possible to imagine
that spring is round the corner. And
at Coopers Farm that means only
one thing: the arrival of abundant
and assorted new life. And after all
these years that still fills me with
excitement and anticipation.
Malcolm the sheep scan man will be
here any day. The rams went in with the
ewes in late October and now it’s time to
find out how successful those romantic
liaisons were. To scan them, the sheep
pass along a corridor similar to a Heath
Robinson contraption that looks a bit
like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. With
Malcolm at the controls, perched on
an old Toyota car seat, the ewes file
alongside him and are scanned to see if
they’re carrying one, two or three lambs.
As each is recorded we spray them
with marker paint on the shoulder
for singles, on their tail for twins
Phil the cockerel and
his very rare Brown
Sussex hens
and across the rump for triplets. And
then finally – ta-da! – Malcolm gives
us the total score for the number of
lambs we can expect. Hopefully about
150 with not too many ‘empties’.
And at last the hens have decided
to get in on the act, too. I’ve had hens
ever since we came to the farm and
love to see them wandering around the
farmyard. Sadly, however, a few months
ago they wandered just a bit too far
from said farmyard and the inevitable
happened. I swore I wouldn’t get any
more, but then after a few egg-free
months I succumbed.
Not for me cheap
brown hybrid hens that
happily lay an egg every
day – hell no – I have a
real weakness for the rare
and the beautiful when it
comes to feathers. So, back
in the summer, I acquired
a cockerel and five young
pullets (the term used
for hens before they produce an egg)
of the old-fashioned Sussex breed.
These come in many shades, all with
black neck and tail feathers and most
commonly available in Light (think
white), Buff (heavenly caramel) or
Speckled (dark brown with what looks
like a smattering of snow) variations,
but we’ve gone really off-piste and opted
for the extremely rare Brown Sussex.
But here’s an interesting aside, there
is apparently an even rarer, possibly
even extinct, one. The Coronation
Sussex chicken (I’m not making this
up) was created for the coronation of
Edward VIII – an event which as we
know thanks to Mrs Simpson never
took place. It had the same white body
“These posh hens
found the late
autumn and early
winter of 2019
far too wet and
cold to lay eggs”
as the Light, but with lavender instead
of black neck and tail feathers and a
red comb it was supposed to resemble
the Union Jack. They haven’t been
seen for many years now but wouldn’t
it be wonderful to discover there
still were some scratching around.
Anyway, back to my quite but not
completely rare Brown ones. Purchased
at about 10 weeks old, they were not
expected to ‘come into lay’ until about
20 weeks which would have taken us to
November. Trouble is, these posh hens,
unlike the far more obliging brown
hybrid ones, found the
late autumn and early
winter of 2019 far too
wet and cold to lay
eggs – which might go
some way to explaining
their rarity. But bang on
the button, as soon as
we got past the winter
solstice in late December
and the evenings began
to draw out – bingo we had an egg!
Like buses they’re now coming fast
and furious and will continue to do
so until – unlike those reliable hybrids
who’ve have it bred out of them – they
go broody and stop laying. But then
again a few chicks around the place
at Easter is always a welcome sight.
Jane will be teaching a half-day
course on an introduction to bee
keeping at the wonderful Curious
House in Stonegate on Thursday
7 February, curioushouse.net.
