INTRODUCTION
This book covers the last two decades of my previous life, when I
extended my photographic interest in Fashion and Beauty
Photography. There was a time before early in the Eighties when I
started with photography as my hobby and career aspiration
which may become an approach for a further publication. A few
shots were taken of a schoolmate named Michelina. It was my first
fashion shoot. Therefore, the only surviving exposure is invaluable
to me and I put her in front of this anthology.
It was in 1996 when I began to deal with photography theoretically
again, for example with Giselle Freund and Susan Sontag. In 1996
I did an internship in a photo studio, in which digital photography
was already being operated with a large format camera. I had also
a lot of odd jobs besides the photography like driving a taxi, being
a turist guide and a call agent but I was particularly interested in
beauty and i‚n fashion, especially of women. In 1999, I took pictures
of runway shows in a fashion boutique. Later, I completed a weekly
course in Photoshop 6.0 at the community college. Pictures of
Michaela and various other amateur models were created, of which
only a small choice was admitted in this publication.
During a trip to Paris in 2004 I attended the premiere of the play
„Ondine“ at the Théâtre Antoine, in which Laetitia Casta starred.
After the show, their fan base gathered at the back door of the
theater and I also had a brief encounter with her. There I took my
first photo with a supermodel. I was so thrilled.

I bought my first digital camera, a Canon EOS 350 D and also
purchased an Elinchrom flash system, registered a photographic
business. There were a lot of testshoots with amateur models in
this period. Then I visited the Fashion Weeks in Milan, New York
and Paris and also had first publications in magazines. It was not
until October 2009 that I acquired a professional camera, a Canon
5D Mark II. In a retraining as a media designer in 2010/2011, I now
learned not only desktop publishing but also to edit pictures more
professionally. Since it was always hard to get good models, I
organized the Sylt Modelcamp in 2013. I put a lot of work into a
professional website that I created with Drupal and various models
applied. Especially the work with Lea Haley, a spokesmodel of
Adidas, who arrived with her team led to nice shots.
I was always engaged intensively in theoretical aspects on history
of photography. In 2016, this culminated in the publication
„Geschichte der Fashion & Beauty Photographie – Das 19.
Jahrhundert“. This book was then even purchased by the University
Library and the Art Library of my hometown. In 2019,
finally a dream came true when I set up a small photo studio,
because the space in my own apartment was always very limited
to realize shootings.
I am very pleased to present this book. It mainly includes fashion
and beauty photographs of the last 20 years. There was always a
big gap between what I wanted to do and what I could do. So I am
all the happier that with this work I can make an extensive
publication of this creative period. It is not complete. The selection
of pictures is always difficult. But I think it offers a good insight
into my work and I wish the viewers of the pictures appealing
photographic encounters.
