<strong>with</strong> and give a time limit for when improvements<br />

shall be made. Patients have<br />

many possibilities to compla<strong>in</strong> about <strong>the</strong><br />

treatment or services <strong>the</strong>y have received.<br />

The simplest way is to express dissatisfaction<br />

to <strong>the</strong> physician who provided<br />

<strong>the</strong> treatment, or to contact <strong>the</strong> physician<br />

<strong>in</strong> charge of <strong>the</strong> hospital department or<br />

health centre. If fur<strong>the</strong>r assistance is<br />

needed <strong>in</strong> order to solve <strong>the</strong> problem,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are two possibilities. The patient<br />

can contact ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Office of <strong>the</strong> Chief<br />

Medical Officer or <strong>the</strong> National Supervisory<br />

Authority for Welfare and <strong>Health</strong>.<br />

Both <strong>the</strong>se bodies can give an expert<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ion, or give sanctions if necessary.<br />

In Åland, compla<strong>in</strong>ts concern<strong>in</strong>g treatment<br />

can ei<strong>the</strong>r be addressed, as <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>land,<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

treatment, or to <strong>the</strong> national authorities,<br />

or to <strong>the</strong> Åland Government. The patient<br />

ombudsman is employed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Åland Government and is thus <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

of <strong>the</strong> respective treatment <strong>in</strong>stitutions.<br />

The patient ombudsman may take<br />

up questions of pr<strong>in</strong>cipal significance<br />

<strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> "Patients Board of Trust" where<br />

<strong>the</strong> questions may be discussed and form<br />

<strong>the</strong> basis for decisions, although <strong>the</strong><br />

committee cannot make a decision <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

cases.<br />

In Iceland, compla<strong>in</strong>ts concern<strong>in</strong>g health<br />

services are addressed to <strong>the</strong> Medical Director<br />

of <strong>Health</strong>, who evaluates <strong>the</strong> compla<strong>in</strong>t<br />

and makes a decision. Decisions<br />

made by <strong>the</strong> Medical Directorate of<br />

<strong>Health</strong> may be appealed to <strong>the</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ister<br />

of health.<br />

Hvis der er behov for yderligere<br />

hjælp til at løse problemet er der to muligheder.<br />

Patienten kan kontakte embedslægekontoret,<br />

eller de nationale myndigheder<br />

(VALVIRA). Begge disse organer<br />

kan give ekspertudtalelser og sanktioner<br />

hvis det er nødvendigt.<br />

In Åland stilles klager vedrørende behandl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

som i F<strong>in</strong>land til den <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />

der har givet behandl<strong>in</strong>gen eller til de nationale<br />

myndigheder eller til Ålands<br />

landskabsreger<strong>in</strong>g: Patentombudsmanden<br />

er ansat af Ålands landskabsreger<strong>in</strong>g<br />

og er uafhængig af de behandlende <strong>in</strong>stitutioner.<br />

Patientombudsmanden kan tage<br />

spørgsmål op som er af pr<strong>in</strong>cipiel betydn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for ”Fortrolighedsnævnet” hvor<br />

spørgsmål kan blive diskuteret og danne<br />

grundlag for beslutn<strong>in</strong>ger. Dog kan<br />

nævnet ikke tage beslutn<strong>in</strong>ger i <strong>in</strong>dividuelle<br />

sager.<br />

I Island sendes klager vedrørende sundhedsvæsenet<br />

til medic<strong>in</strong>aldirektøren der<br />

evaluerer klagerne og træffer en beslutn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Beslutn<strong>in</strong>ger der er taget af medic<strong>in</strong>alstyrelsen<br />

kan ankes til Sundhedsm<strong>in</strong>isteriet.<br />
