Senior Romance: You’re NeverToo Old for Love—By MichaelVilder, Senior Social Work InternLove is a many-splendored thing at anystage of life, but as the average humanlifespan continues to grow, many olderadults are finding themselves in aposition to pursue romance even aftermany years of coupledom. Whetherone is divorced, widowed, or nevermarried, it’s common for one toexperience the desire to share one’slater life with someone else. For thosewho have lost a partner, especially aftera long and meaningful couplehoodexperience, the desire to pursue a newromantic endeavor may be hinderedby emotions such as guilt, sadness, andregret. However, even those who arenot hindered by such emotions mayfind it difficult to pursue a new partnerdue to a lack of confidence or lack ofknowledge regarding social resources.The internet has become a popularplatform for single people of all ages tolook for love. A number of datingwebsites tailored specifically to olderadults exist. The use of such websitesmay be appealing to individuals wholack the time for more traditionalcourtship but possess even basiccomputer knowledge. However, forthose who feel intimidated by theprospect of dating in cyberspace,plenty of other, more traditional datingoutlets are around. Singles mixers forolder adults do exist, though they maybe easier to discover using the internet.Clubs or classes may providecomparatively low-pressureenvironments to meet other likemindedindividuals who may also beopen to something more. Even if oneisn’t comfortable pursuing romance incasual settings like these, interactingwith others in low-key environmentsmay provide a confidence and socialskills boost, allowing one to work his orher way up to a renewed pursuit ofromance.Whether it be to hone one’s social skillsor to meet new friends, the Niles SeniorCenter provides a variety of casualclasses, clubs, and activities one canutilize. Located just above the seniorSOCIAL SERVICEScenter, Niles Family Services providescounseling services that can aidindividuals who may be struggling toget back into the dating game for anyreason, whether it be due to emotionalchallenges or a lack of confidence orresources. The group is a sourceof emotional help and practicalguidance that provides an opportunityto relieve stress and interactwith other caregivers.Parent GroupA support group that is availablefor senior parents coping with thedemands of caring for medically,emotionally or financially dependentadult children.In addition, we also offerthe following service:HERO ProgramNiles Helping Eldersthrough Referral andOutreach (HERO) is acommunity-based systemfor identifying and helpingolder adults at-riskphysically, emotionally,socially or financially.
