Finally, the muchanticipated
Red was everywhere and it
was dizzying.
The colour took a whole new meaning as men
Scarves
Scarves are one of those
things that most people don’t
specifically set out to buy, but
always end up with anyway.
There are many intentionally
stylish things you can do to
with it.
Try tying a scarf around a
handle on your purse,
around your waist as a
belt, or artfully knotted as
a halter. Go for a loose
wrap-around look, or
twist before knotting for
an easy yet fancy look.
A Perfect
Black
Blazer
Blazers are awesome pieces
because there are so many
varieties to choose from. Be
have enough room to layer
Every fashion-forward girl must know the basic
building blocks of a well-rounded closet.
There are definitely classic pieces that you
shouldn’t be afraid to splurge on. These pieces, if
well taken care of, can last for years or even decades.
They will carry you through work weeks at a big girl job,
dinners, networking soirees, and so much more.
Here, we list some of these closet essentials.
If you will be working, going to
soon, a classic white dress shirt
should be your new best friend
forever.
Pair with a pencil skirt, with a blazer,
khaki trousers, or black pants. Finish
with a statement necklace and
simple pumps or ballet flats. The
Black Pumps
No girl in the world should go without
a pair of wearable, classic, and
weddings to company functions, first
dates to first jobs, black heels do an
amazing job complementing dressy
shorts, tank top blouse with a
pencil skirt, and can be paired
with a blazer for the meeting,
and take it off for the date.
don’t need to spend a bunch of money on.
Rather than spending so much on one
fancy leather pair, pick up several different
Having a trusted LBD in
INTERVIEW
Emem Isong Misodi:
Redefining Nollywood Movies
Words By - Rita Okoye
Emem Isong Misodi is an award-winning Nigerian film-maker, screenwriter, and the Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) of the Royal Arts Academy, a media school based in Lagos. She is also a
movie producer and a film distributor.
The Nollywood icon who just returned after a brief break from filmmaking, has again thrilled movie
lovers with her latest project- Special Jollof.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day and the celebration of black history month in the United States, Emem
Isong Misodi’s Special Jollof hit the cinemas last Friday.
The film which is a Royal Arts Academy production, was shot in both the United States of America
and Nigeria. It tells the story of a scorned American journalist who goes undercover at a Nigerian
restaurant in the United States, to prove Nigerian Immigrants come into the country illegally to hurt
Americans, and break their laws. She ended up falling in love and proven wrong.
In this interview, the talented producer gives more insight about her new movie, challenges of a female
filmmaker and other topical issues.
You took a break from filmmaking, why?
I didn’t really take a break. I was making a
few made to TV films. I decided to give the big
screen a break and I was away for a while to
attend to family matters.
Our popular cuisine, Jollof is taking on a
whole new meaning especially with your
latest production, “Special Jollof”. What is
the inspiration behind the movie?
The movie isn’t exactly about Jollof Rice
but my movie is set in an African restaurant in
Houston, USA hence the title. Special Jollof
treats the subject of immigrants being
regarded as nuisances in the country they
migrate to. The prejudices, the hate, the
racial profiling and all is what the movie is
about.
What are the take home for fans?
Let Love lead. Get rid of the prejudices.
There’s been an influx of young film
makers into the industry. What’s been your
staying power?
Passion prayer and consistency.
Are the challenges you faced as a young
film maker still there?
Yes. The issue of film financing and lack of
proper distribution channels are still there: but
the latter has improved a bit.
If you say film distribution is better, what is
the copyright situation now?
The copyright situation hasn’t improved
because piracy still remains our biggest
problem. Distribution is better in terms of
having more cinemas to show our movies and
having them streamed on pay per view TV.
Would you say Creatives are reaping the
fruit of their labour like their counterparts
abroad?
The remuneration for Creatives in this
clime is a far cry from what their counterparts
receive abroad. Hollywood and other more
established film industries, are much older,
and much more sophisticated than Nollywood
and such would most definitely, reward their
practitioners better. Moreover, you cannot
really divorce the economic reality of the
environment in which we practise from the
industry. The situation in Nollywood would not
be far from what the social, political and
economic situation in the country.
Lack of adequate infrastructures, lack of
adequate support from the government and
various foundations that support filmmaking
would definitely affect the welfare of
Nollywood and it’s practitioners. Same can’t
exactly be said for our side of the pond. To be
honest, we aren’t where we used to be, but
we still have a long way to go, to get to where
we need to be.
What does a Nigerian film maker needs to
obtain to be able to shoot his movie
abroad?
It all depends on what the filmmaker wants
to achieve with the film. He or she may need
to obtain a work permit in order to make things
easy. The filmmaker needs to get a work
permit and possibly, liaise with another
filmmaker there to make the process smooth.
Were there gender dimensions to the
challenges?
At the beginning yes; but not so much
INTERVIEW
these days.
Share with us your candid opinion on the
Oscar selection that some people felt was
politicized and rigged against Nollywood...
I may not exactly agree with that even
though it tilts towards the politics of it a bit.
They had their specifications and I guess we
did not meet it 100%, and I don’t think we
lobbied enough. There is a bit of lobbying
involved in the selections and strategic
planning which I am not sure we did. My
opinion though.
What do we need to do differently?
Making great films isn’t enough. We need to
be deliberate and strategic about certain
things.
Making great
films isn’t
enough. We need
to be deliberate
and strategic
about certain
things.
Apart from the Grammys which we missed,
in what other way can Nigeria be strategic
in other to win?
Nigeria needs to support its film industry
more by creating an enabling environment for
us to practise. Good policies affecting out
businesses should be created. Less taxes or
no taxes at all on film making equipment being
imported into the country thereby, making the
cost of making films relatively cheaper and
less cumbersome.
We need more stringent policies regarding
piracy. If filmmakers have adequate funding
not just to make films but to position their films
well at International film festivals, this may
open up doors in the international circle for the
films to have a chance to be nominated. The
members of the Oscar committee in Nigeria,
have an important role to play in lobbying and
positioning the right films for nomination for the
Oscars. All these things are a function of
finances.
Which Nollywood actor would you
nominate to play the Intricate Oscar
winning role?
I really cannot pin point a particular actor. I
believe that we have great actors here that,
given the right scripts, the right directors and
the right production,:can give Oscar-winning
performances. There are a few of them known
and unknown.
As a filmmaker, would you say filmmakers
are telling authentic, contemporary African
stories?
We are not telling enough of those stories
probably because of the fear of box office
failure. However, I believe if we tell those
stories very well and from the heart, and well
executed and interpreted by good believable
characters, and most importantly, well
marketed and distributed, they would do well.
What do you look out for before picking an
actor to work with, popularity or talent?
I focus more on talent but I do not ignore
popularity, depending on what I want to do
with the film.
What are the highpoints of your career?
Empowering the next generation of
filmmakers, although there are still more high
points yet to be reached.
How do you relax and find time for family?
Travelling to serene places and reading.
Sometimes, I shut down for weeks and stay
home with my family.
Where is your best holiday destination?
Venice, Italy.
Best fashion accessory?
A good pair of glasses.
Who are your favourite Nigerian
designers?
Mai Atafo and Lanre Da Silva.
What are your plans for 2020?
Benefits
of Papaya:
Fruit,
Seeds &
Leaves
By - Tobi Ayodele Keeney
The papaya fruit or pawpaw as it is
commonly known in Nigeria, is a very
common and tasty fruit widely eaten
nationwide. It almost grows wildly, dotting
the streets and growing in front of everyone’s
home. A little known fact is that the tree
bears a very beneficial fruit with wonderful
health benefits.
Papaya fruit is very high in antioxidants
and Vitamin C. This makes the fruit good in
boosting immunity and thereby preventing
infections like, the common cold or flu. In
addition, it reduces cholesterol buildup in
the blood thereby reducing the risk of
developing heart disease. The fruit is also
rich in Vitamin A which is responsible for
preserving vision and protecting against age
related eye diseases. Papaya can help to fight
and prevent cancer. The fruit is rich in
lycopene and carotene which has been
demonstrated to reduce cancer risk. Special
antioxidants in papaya have also been shown
to have anti-cancer activity as well as to
reduce oxidative damage which is a
precursor to the formation of cancer.
Another benefit of papaya is its ability
to fight inflammation. Inflammation is the
root of many diseases ranging from arthritis
to cancer and papain, an enzyme found in
papaya has exhibited very strong antiinflammatory
qualities. Papain reduces pain,
muscle soreness and aids in digestion.
Papain is also used in skin preparations to
PAPAYA SEED &
LEAVES
improve the texture of the skin and to
promote wound healing.
Papaya leaves are not to be ignored;
they are packed with superior medicinal
qualities and have been used effectively in
traditional medicine for a long time. Papaya
leaves have been used to reduce fever and
body pains associated with malaria. It works
similar to conventional painkillers such as
Ibuprofen without the side effects. The
leaves also contain the enzyme papain which
aid digestion and relieves menstrual pain.
The leaves are also used to fight diabetes. It
works by preventing excess sugar from
staying in the blood which also helps to
reduce the organ damage caused by diabetes.
Papaya leaves also accelerates wound
healing, making for a faster recovery. For
people who have problems digesting gluten
and wheat, the enzymes in papaya leaves help
to break the proteins down in the body.
Papaya seeds are also very important to
our health. Many of us think the seeds are
inedible and we throw them away, not
knowing we are discarding valuable
medicine. Papaya seeds are great for
detoxification. Consuming the seeds help to
detoxify the liver and kidneys. The high fibre
content also helps to cleanse and detoxify the
colon. This can also aid in achieving weight
loss for overweight people. Just like the fruit
and the leaves, papaya seeds are also very
valuable in reducing inflammation and
lowering high blood pressure. The benefits
go on and on.
Many
of us think the
seeds are inedible
and we throw them
away, not knowing we
are discarding valuable
medicine.
Papaya seeds are great for
detoxification. Consuming
the seeds help to detoxify
the liver and
kidneys.
In conclusion, papaya is a delicious
fruit with many health advantages. We
should strive to incorporate it into our diets
regularly and this should include the seeds
and the leaves.
A simple detox regimen is to try what
we call ‘Pawpaw Therapy’. Cut a medium
sized papaya into 3 equal parts, and divide
the seeds in to 3 equal parts. In addition, boil
the leaves in a small sized cooking pot with 6
cups of water. In the morning, eat one-third
of the pawpaw, swallow one third of the
seeds, and drink 2 cups of the papaya leaf tea.
Do this also in the afternoon and evening
making sure to drink at least 3 litres of water
throughout the day. Resume your regular
meals the following day. This will help to
cleanse your system, lose weight and hydrate
your skin.
I hope you try this wonderful tip soon
and start reaping the health benefits!
others lost their partner. And of course, there
were the singles who celebrated with their
unmarried friends or just back home to chill with
wine and ice cream.
Most hotel rooms were booked for hours,
eateries/fast food even several beer parlours
and pepper soup spots were also occupied by
lovers. All that is over now.
The question now is, what next? What is the
next step to take after Cupid’s celebration?
Usually, after a major celebration like that, we
hear of men becoming broke, some ladies
getting pregnant and many relationships
destroyed. If it turns out your Valentine day
didn’t go down well, here are a few things you
can do to get you lively again.
*First, you have to pamper yourself.
It’s super important to have “me time “ This can
be anything that gets you feeling spoiled such
as taking a break to curl up, reading that novel
that you keep eyeing but never able to pick it
up. Also, put on the headphones to listen to the
tunes that you have recently downloaded.
*Try having a spa day, if it happens that you
don’t have time for an entire day, you can just
settle for a facial or maybe a pedicure. A hot
rock massage might also do the trick as it could
help melt away any stress that you might have.
It is really all about taking care of yourself.
Taking a class or being volunteer is another
way to go. If there is a class on your bucket
list, move it over to your accomplish list, it does
not have to be a full semester course.
There could be day/night classes for 6
weeks or weekend classes. Bear in mind that
there are all kinds of classes out there ranging
from cooking, to photography, dance, music to
learning new languages. You can always take
a look at the different institutions and any online
programs in your area for options.
Volunteering on its own is all about your
passion. It is also flexible to work around your
schedule. The opportunities are everywhere
from mentoring of school children, to helping
out at events.
No matter what your interests are, there is a
volunteer job that matches your heart desires.
The above activities promote self-confidence
and is also a great way to meet people with
similar passions.
Get to spend time with friends and family;
nothing binds friends and family like an
afternoon outing at the movie. It can be very
relaxing and fun to be around people that have
been there with you, through thick and thin.
Enjoy the time to just release stress and be
yourself.
There is something about Mother Nature that
is refreshing and invigorating. For those who
may not be hiking enthusiasts, there are lots of
other activities to do outside. Also, there are
some neighbor-hood attractions that are
opened all year round. You could also play
tourist for an afternoon and explore your town
on foot. The sole aim is to disconnect from the
everyday routine to help reset and energize, so
enjoy the great outdoors.
Nothing helps moving on better than letting go.
Clean out on that one closet that you look away
from every time you walk by it, give out those
clothes that you have not worn in a year to
family, friends or the less privileged.
Try and recycle old electronics that are sitting
around collecting dust, this will give you a
sense of accomplishment and closure when
you clear things out of your home that you no
longer need.
Valentine’s Day may be over for another
year, but its the perfect time to let go, and
energise.
What some of your favourite
celebrities said and we listened.
“No one will understand our love
like we do, the bound , the
connection and love that we
share is out of this world and if I
was to come back to this world
and was asked who I’d want as
a life partner I’ll definitely choose
you over and over and over
again. I’ve only fallen in love
once in my life and I’m proud to
say it is with you”.
Princess Shyngle goes all
romantic to celebrate her
husband on Valentine.
“The death of my mother will always
remain to be the greatest loss in my
life. May God grant you eternal
peace. I look back to the days you
were with us and I can’t help myself
crying. I still miss you so much, mom.
I cannot forget my mother. She is my
bridge. When I needed to get across,
she steadied herself long enough for
me to run across safely”.
Eniola Badmus remembers mum
after 16 years.
“I’m proud of many things
in this world, but nothing
beats being a mother. My
kids are the beat in my
heart, the pulse in my
veins, the energy in my
soul. I live for them.
Nadia Buari enjoying
the joy of motherhood.
“Life is like vapour that appears for a little while
and then disappears. Once our time is up, all the
ambitious chasing of money, power, fame, and
pleasure count for nothing, if they were not
motivated by love. Today and everyday, let us
renew our commitment to love more.
I love you, my beautiful babe”.
MY LAGOS
ADVENTURE
By Odun Ogunbiyi
hope you all had a fantastic Valentines Day!
I I am predicting that after my morning at the
passport office, I came home to sleep off the
trauma and pretended the rest of the day was
not happening.
I am writing this at the beginning of the week,
as you can imagine, so I am really flexing my
powers of deductive reasoning here. I am also
predicting (while we are at it) that the traffic
on Friday was unbearable.
I hope you are having a wonderful, restful
Sunday.
Small World
Small World
Silver
Anniversary
Event
Last Saturday evening, after a pleasant
afternoon nap, I attended my very first
Small World event. My friend got tickets,
discovered there was an “over 18” clause
meaning she could not take her daughter,
so I lucked into being her date for the night.
Held annually, this year’s event was held at
the open-air space at the Federal Palace
and was delightfully organised, calm, but
still tons of fun.
We strolled through stands loaded with
food and drinks, a bazaar featuring
delicacies and delights from different parts
of the world. Our favourites included a rumbased
concoction from Brazil and the food
Small World
from China and India and the sure-fire winner
was an absolutely delish pork from the West
Indies.
I experienced a small existential crisis as I
literally stood in front of the scones and clotted
cream from the England stand, worrying
whether or not I was being adventurous enough.
We finally went to the Azerbaijan stand where
I finally crossed off Baklava as food I had read
about but never eaten.
Later, we made our way to the stage area to
watch the show organised by the International
Women’s Organisation for charity. They are
a registered NGO who, in their 25 years of
operation, have raised almost ₦500 million
for the charities they support. Very admirable
indeed.
The shows were great fun with tons of
enthusiasm and support for the performances.
My favourites were the dance routine from India
and the Chinese opera.
I am very much looking forward to next year’s
offering.
Base coat
Base Coat
Until two weeks ago I was a fan of doing my manicure
at home. I have quite the collection of colours and
treatments, but alas, just when I reach a length I can be
proud of, one broken nail means I must lop everything off.
For years I have been (un)happily riding this rollercoaster of
joy and disappointment that would have continued unabated
but for a fateful dinner party.
While at a friends’ home where she was being an amazing
host as usual—you know, fresh flowers on the table, mood
lighting courtesy of some strategically placed candles and
gentle music, providing a soft background to stimulating
conversation—she was floating around in some dreamy
floaty concoction, serving us food in some gorgeous
crockery. The icing on the cake? The perfectly- manicured
tips of her elegant hand as she went about her hostessing
duties.
It took me a couple of weeks to wrap my head around
what needed to be done; but I had no idea where to go
so, I called up another friend (madam hostess was out the
country at this time). Luckily, my timing was impeccable; she
was in need of a manicure touch up and was about to try
out a new spot in Victoria Island.
Base Coat opened in November last year but already has
an atmosphere of leaders in the field. I love the make an
appointment rule; this allows your technician to focus on
what you want. In this case, a very therapeutic pedicure
followed by a manicure slay that has had me feeling more
myself since I got it done.
I am the proud owner of some gorgeous, in-the-nude-family,
adult manicure, thank you very much. My technician, Henry,
was satisfyingly concerned with making sure I loved my
nails, which led him to flex his creative juices with some
pink glitter that brings me joy every time I look at them.
My friend was taken care of by Sultan, who has quite the
following for his creative nail artistry. Coincidently, he did the
nails that gave me the nail envy that started all of this in the
first place.
An abundance of OPI colours and quality products
available. They have created a monster and have a regular
customer in me.
