THE TRUMPET MARINE PROJECT

For their latest ground-breaking

project, The Society of Strange

and Ancient Instruments proudly

revives the ‘trumpet marine’.

A towering, single-stringed

instrument with a host of

resonating or sympathetic strings,

it was a trumpet-substitute for the

use of nuns but also an unusual

book online

vehicle for virtuosic musical

display in the late 17 th century.

Despite its magnificent sound and

appearance, it fell out of circulation

in the late 18th century and has

rarely been seen or heard since.

Now, for the first time in 345 years,

curious sights and compelling

sounds of late-17 th -century

England, SSAI will present old and

new works for trumpet marine

ensemble and other combinations

of exotic musical instruments.
