After picking up a treble viol while at music college shenever looked back. Consort-playing gave her the foundationsof understanding the aesthetics and the language of baroquemusic, and that was soon translated to the violin. She leda number of orchestras, notably Christopher Hogwood’sAcademy of Ancient Music, and later co-founded and led theOrchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for two decades.As a founder of the Purcell Quartet she recorded andperformed all the major works of the baroque trio-sonatarepertoire (and much more) the world over. She wasalso Britain’s pioneer and champion of the violad’amore. Cat’s influence as a teacher andeducator has been unique and far-reaching,with many generations of violinists, violistsand other instrumentalists passing throughher hands at the Royal College of Music, theRoyal Conservatoire The Hague, and onnumerous courses world-wide.The York Early Music Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Awardhonours major figures who have made a significant difference tothe world of early music and has been presented every other yearsince its inauguration in 2006.
