YEARS

CELEBRATING

WELCOME TO THE

20TH ANNIVERSARY

Cover photo: Urzsula Tarasiewicz

Welcome to the 20th anniversary

edition of the NCEM’s spring

season of concerts, boasting an

international star line-up of artists

including trumpeter Byron Wallen,

drummer Jeff Williams and

guitarist Antonio Forcione.

20 years ago, St Margaret’s Church

had only just opened as the National

Centre for Early Music. It’s been

quite a journey! The NCEM is now

established as an essential music

venue in the City, providing a yearround

series of festivals, concerts

and creative opportunities for people

of all ages, and is acknowledged as

a much-loved venue for weddings,

parties, conferences and recordings.

This spring we are undertaking an

essential refurbishment programme,

in part to upgrade some of the

facilities which are showing the

strain of so much usage, and I am

delighted to acknowledge financial

support from Arts Council England;

the Garfield Weston Foundation;

the Foyle Foundation and the Noel

Terry Charitable Trust. Our sincerest

thanks go to them, and to those of

you who have helped support our

Seat Appeal. Just another £5,000

to find now so that we can all enjoy

some extra padding! Please do help

us if you can!

Whether you want to listen, take

part, or get involved as a volunteer,

there is much to enjoy at the

NCEM this spring. We look forward

to seeing you very soon.

Delma Tomlin MBE

Director

This season we are delighted to welcome

Jeff Williams and Richard Durrant to the

stage to talk about their musical inspirations

with NCEM Director, Delma Tomlin.

Richard Durrant guitar

Music for Midsummer

Guitarist, composer and ukulele

virtuoso Richard Durrant returns

to the NCEM with his trademark

blend of original music as part of

a midsummer series of concerts which

begins in Orkney and finishes in Sussex. Cycling

from venue to venue, carrying his guitar and ukulele

(a journey of some 860 miles), Richard will play music

from his new album Weald Barrows.

This will be Richard’s fourth and longest Cycling Music

adventure. The first was in 2014, a 1,500-mile UK concert

tour undertaken as an eco-statement in response to the

traditionally large carbon footprint generated by a touring

musician. Says Richard: “Music for Midsummer 2020

will be an exciting challenge. I’ll be cycling down from

Orkney alone this year and this will, for me at least,

introduce a magic and a concentration to the music”.

Antonio’s impressive 20 albums and extensive

international tours in festivals and theatres

have brought high critical acclaim from as far

as Australia and Hong Kong to the Caribbean,

Russia and all over Europe. He has the ‘hands

of a tarantula and the heart of a lion' as one critic

Artistic, intense and formidably inventive,

Jeff Williams’ Bloom

featuring Carmen Staaf

and Michael Formanek

When rising star Carmen Staaf stepped in for

legendary drummer Jeff Williams’ usual pianist,

the musical connection was powerful and

instantaneous. Williams, who resides in both

London and New York, has an impressive CV,

having performed with Stan Getz, Joe Lovano and

Dave Liebman. “We talked about the idea of a trio,

after which I ran into Michael (bassist Formanek

and ECM artist). That was the eureka moment – it

bloomed outta nowhere, hence the album title.”

The threesome recorded Bloom in New York and

released it on the Whirlwind Label in April 2019

garnering high praise from the jazz press - four

and five star reviews and NPR ranking the album

#7 on the iTunes jazz charts. This performance is

part of an 8-date UK tour.

that.’ ★★★★ Jazzwise

More than 10 years after his award-winning album,

Meeting Ground, jazz trumpeter and writer Byron Wallen

releases his new album Portrait. Conceived when sitting

in the central square in Woolwich, Wallen was struck by

the community around him with its mixture of ages and

nationalities. Following a commission to compose a suite

of music celebrating his chosen hometown, Wallen wrote

his Anthem for Woolwich which forms the nucleus of this

new album - taking inspiration from the timeless sound of

the human soul from all corners of the earth. Landmarks

of blues, mode and groove are explored and re-invented.

Inspiration for the compositions was also drawn from

early Renaissance music, Central and East African rhythm

and polyphony, and the music of Miles Davis, Wayne

Shorter and Thelonius Monk.

Malcolm Creese double bass

Gwilym Simcock piano

The three members of Acoustic

Triangle are equally at home in

classical music and jazz, and

their work seeks to blur the

perceived boundaries between

these genres. Individually, their

careers have taken them all over

the globe - with musicians such

as Mark Anthony Turnage,

John Williams, Chick Corea,

Dave Holland, Pat Metheny,

Cleo Laine, Lee Konitz and Sting.

Together they have become

one of the most original and

respected British ensembles,

having recorded four albums

and performed in major concert

venues and festivals all over

the world - always without

amplification.

Acoustic Triangle's music

contains a wide variety of

influences - from ancient

themes and folk styles through

impressionism and the jazz era

to the avant-garde. Much of the

group's repertoire is specially

composed by Tim Garland

and Gwilym Simcock, but it

also includes music by Kenny

Wheeler, John Taylor, Bill Evans,

Olivier Messiaen and Maurice

Ravel.
