(CCA) EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS
Egrets and Night Herons have created nesting sites in Copperfield for
the last 5 years shutting down pools, mailboxes & creating havoc in
our neighborhood. The Egrets and Night Herons WILL be returning
now!! Prevention is Crucial - Egrets, herons and other migratory birds
are protected by Federal International Treaty, it’s illegal for residents to
harass or harm the birds once they lay eggs. Residents will need to band
together and drive them out of our neighborhood for the next several
years. Preventing the birds from building nests on residential property or
in our parks is key.
1. Trim your tree and remove dead wood, these birds favor oak trees and
other hardwoods. But will nest in other mature trees as well. Trim your
tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other nearby trees.
Experts say this is the MOST effective step.
2. Remove any old inactive nest in your trees. Egret Prevention Tools! This
is the only opportunity homeowners have to scare the birds away and to
disrupt the cycle. Any home with mature trees is a potential nesting site.
COPPERFIELD COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
(CCA) MANAGEMENT COMPANY
Graham Management is management company for the Copperfield
Community Association. Graham Management contact information is
4
• Visual deterrents - Hang aluminum pie plates, Mylar balloons, beach
balls with shiny streamers or other moving objects in large trees.
• Noisemakers - Pump-style air horns, whistles, clappers and even
children’s toys are effective. Make as much noise as possible aimed at the
bird.
• Bright lights - High-intensity flashlights, strobe lights, flashing holiday
lights can be effective.
• Water sprayers - Power sprayers and pump-style toy water shooters can
help. Homemade PVC pipe sprayers can help reach tall tree limbs.
• Pool poles - Telescoping pool safety poles can be used to reach and
remove early nesting material.
• Any Non-lethal devices.
• Check trees daily and remove the start of any nest quickly. Once birds
begin sitting on the nest, eggs are probably present and birds cannot
be harassed. If you have not yet taken action to prevent nesting on your
property, please do so now!
FIRE TRUCK CLEARANCE
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is still requesting homeowners
assist in addressing the low hanging trees within the Copperfield
Community. Low hanging limbs and branches are causing damage to
the fire departments equipment and damage to the homeowners’ trees,
hampering the response to emergency calls. Most of the fire departments
equipment is 13 feet tall and therefore need a 14 foot clearance from
trees that hang over the streets. Routes to locations have to be altered
to avoid these areas and some areas have no alternate route; leaving no
recourse but to park and walk to the locations.
SEE STRAYS IN YOUR STREET?
Do adult cats traipse through your landscape? Have you discovered
newborn kittens in your yard? If you choose to care for these cats, keep in
mind your responsibility. As custodian of the cats, you must keep the cats
licensed, vaccinated and restrained. In unincorporated Harris County, the
custodian of every cat is responsible for any behavior of that cat. For laws
pertaining to pets in unincorporated Harris County, review regulations
POOL AND PARKS: The pool as you know is closed. Again we must
remind everyone that cameras will pick up any illegal activity at all
times in the pool and park area. **At this time, we are contemplating on
opening our pool for WEEKENDS ONLY beginning Saturday, May 2 nd
and officially opening after Memorial Day. **These dates could change
if we do not have enough pool volunteers. Pool volunteers make sure
to close pool at 9 PM, empty trash, put chairs and loungers back in their
place and clean tables if needed. This is not much to ask but is needed in
order to keep our pool open. If you are interested, contact SCS and they
will refer you to the committee members. Pool card activation form will
be mailed out prior to pool opening. Make sure you send form in by the
specific time mentioned so that your pool card can be activated. Your
account with our management company for assessment dues etc. must
be up to date or pool card access will be denied.
MIDDLEGATE VILLAGE
(MG) POOL AND PARK NEWS
The past years in Middlegate has seen changes as our neighborhood has
evolved. Changes in the parks and at the pool have been in response to
various needs as our community grows older.
As the 2020 decade begins, the pool and park committee must also
evolve. The different levels of responsibility that the committee has been
involved with require a new approach to ensure that our parks and pool
continue to provide a resource that our residents can enjoy.
Over the years, residents have served on the HOA Board and committees
that work together for Middlegate. Homeowners who have served are
now moving on to different phases in their lives and new residents need
to participate. The pool and park committee covers the following areas:
1. Pool
2. Pool Park including playground
3. Gazebo Park including playground
4. Signs for garage sales and annual meetings
5. Coordinates with individuals who work on the National Night Out and
Breakfast With Santa
6. Flower boxes around the signs at each park
7. Security cameras for each park
8. Marquee at Gazebo Park
The committee intends to split these tasks into smaller groups. For
example, if you are interested in the pool and want to interact with the
pool company for the summer months then your time is not needed for
the whole year. If you would prefer to inspect just one park or inspect
playground equipment at one park, then perhaps you could accept
that responsibility. Placing the signs for either the garage sale or annual
meeting are one week commitments.
Your time is valuable. No item on the above list will require anyone to
start with a blank slate. Copious information is available for everyone
from the committee. If you want the events like Breakfast with Santa and
National Night Out to continue, then your help is vital.
At the annual meeting on March 25 th , a table will be set up for a sign up
sheet. The committee chair can answer any of your questions.
(MG) ANNUAL ASSESSMENT
Your annual assessment payment covers many expenses incurred
by Middlegate. Pool, parks, mowing, irrigation system upkeep and
playground repairs are among the many expenses that HOA fees cover.
For more complete list, go to SCS Go site and select resources tab. You
can review budget items there. You’re always welcome to attend HOA
Board meetings too, where you can inquire about these expenses and
the services provided.
(MG) ANNUAL MIDDLEGATE HOA MEETING
March 25 th at Labay Middle School beginning 7 PM. Mark it on
your calendar. This is time and place of annual meeting open to all
homeowners. Watch your mail and Middlegate website for details.
(MG) MIDDLEGATE GARAGE SALE
The Middlegate spring garage sale will be held on Saturday, April 4 th .
Set up your merchandise on your property. There’s no need to haul your
belongings to a remote site.
The rain date will be April 18 th , as the weekend prior is Easter weekend.
SAFETY BREAKS: One ten-minute break will be taken at ten (10) minutes
before the hour, every hour. This is to serve as a time of rest for our guests.
This safety break is for everyone including adults. In the fair housing act,
it states that it is age discrimination to not allow anyone under the age
March 2020 | Copperfield
of 18 in the pool during this 10-minute break. For this reason, the safety
break is for everyone. Lifeguards will remain on the lifeguard stand
during this break, to ensure the pool is vacant.
CHILD SAFETY POLICY
Unfortunately, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death
for children 1 to 4 years of age. Most cases are a result of little or no
supervision, access to a swimming pool or water front and can even
occur in a bathtub. As your pool management company, Malibu Aquatics
wants to create a safe environment for the children of your community.
We will implement our Child Safety Policy at your swimming pools for the
2020 swim season. This policy will improve accountability, create awareness
and ensure that every child is safe when visiting community pools.
The Child Safety Policy will be executed with the following rules:
• Children 48 inches and under in height entering the swimming pool
area will be required to wear a wristband issued by the lifeguards.
• A red wristband indicates that the child has NOT passed a Swim Test
administered by the lifeguards. Children with a red wristband are issued a
lifejacket that must be worn at all times. If the guardian elects to not have
the child wear a lifejacket, the guardian is then required to be within arm’s
length of the child at ALL times. The guardian is also issued a red wristband.
• A green wristband indicates that the child has passed a Swim Test.
Once a child has passed the Swim Test, the child’s name will be added to
our Child Safety Log. Each visit to the pool, the child will need to give the
lifeguard their name and a green wristband will be issued. Children on
the Safety Log are not required to wear a lifejacket or to be within arm’s
reach of their guardian.
• The Swim Test consists of swimming one length of the pool unassisted.
This includes no aid from flotation devices, the lane ropes, pool walls or
the bottom of the pool.
• Any child on the Child Safety Log can be asked to perform a Swim Test
again, should the lifeguards on duty feel the child’s swimming ability has
diminished.
(MN) CRIME WATCH
The Copperfield Villages monthly Crime Watch meeting has been
converted to a ‘virtual’ delivery of the crime watch statistics monthly due
to the low turnout at meetings and lack of an interest from the public to
attend. Sergeant Lightfoot (HCSO) is posting monthly data via Nextdoor.
com along with notable arrest info and tips monthly.
(NM) DEED RESTRICTIONS ISSUES
Educate yourself with the deed restrictions for our community. They are
available for reading or download on the community website, under
Documents and Forms, www.northmeadvillage.org/docs.html. The most
common issues are yard issues, stored vehicles, fences with missing
pickets, houses needing painting or power washing on the exterior.
(NM) DOG LEASH LAW
There have been many complaints about dogs are running loose in the
neighborhood. If this is the case, call animal control! If you are walking
your dogs, keep them on a leash at ALL times. This is a deed restriction
and also against Harris County Leash Law. Be considerate of others. Many
children are afraid of animals and also people in the neighborhood do
not appreciate dogs running around loose in their lawns. Please pickup
after your dogs, no one wants to step in your dog’s poop.
(NM) SUGGESTIONS AND TIPS ON HOW TO
PROPERLY NUMBER YOUR HOME
Believe it or not, a large number of house numbers are not visible from
the street during the daytime. It’s even worse at night. A badly displayed
number can hinder the police, ambulance and fire department in the
event of an emergency.
Street curb - The number should be painted about two feet from the
driveway in the direction of the house. Most paintings are inexpensive. If
the driveway has a curb of its own, this is fine as long as the number faces
traffic. Black numbers painted on white background are excellent. They
are clearly visible from a distance even with very little light.
House - The best place is near the front door and within the radius of the
porch light. Above the front door is usually a good spot. Any location
close to the door and above eye level is good.
• Trees and bushes must not block the view from the road. Avoid having it
away from the front door, such as over the garage door.
• Pick a color that has a light and dark contrast with the background. The
background is usually the color of the house. This will make the number
stand out so it can be viewed from the street. If your house has a dark
color, you need a number in a light color. If your house has a light color,
get a dark color number. For example, a black number is perfect on a
white house. A white number will show clearly on a brick house.
SOUTHCREEK VILLAGE
(SC) EGRETS AND HERONS
The snowy egrets and black-billed night herons are coming to your
neighborhood and we need considerable homeowner engagement
to protect our community from the devastation they leave behind.
The Southcreek Village HOA Board of Directors is consulting with
Southdown Village HOA to deter invasive heronries such as can be found
at Southdown Village’s pool area and previously around Middlegate
Village’s pool area. This summer small numbers of them nested in
the Autumn Laurel Pool park, in trees along Royal Gardens Road and
especially around the gazebo in Signal Creek Park. These birds are
generally protected under state and federal law and legally cannot be
harassed when nesting, especially when eggs and young are in the nest.
We need to start organizing ourselves for mobilization of our community
for volunteers to make noise and operate other deterrents at the pool
March 2020 | Copperfield
park. We are asking if you have trees with their nests please remove the
nest. Being pro-active can prevent considerable damage to our property,
parks and pools. These birds caused considerable damage and expense
to Southdown pool area last year. See information and tips under CCA at
the front of the newsletter.
(SC) STREET PARKING
Please be courteous to your neighbors when street parking. Do not
obstruct driveways or sidewalks. Should you need to briefly park a trailer
in the street, please make sure it’s not obstructing anyone’s access to
their driveway. As a reminder, it is prohibited to street park commercial
vehicles in Southcreek - this includes, but is not limited to, semi-trailer
trucks and heavy equipment vehicles.
If a vehicle has been parked in the street and left with outdated tags it is
considered abandoned and will be towed.
(SC) BOARD MEETINGS
Copperfield Southcreek Board meetings are on the third Thursday of
each month. Please feel free to stop by the Autumn Laurel Pool at 6 PM
for a recap on events impacting Southcreek. This is a public forum where
you can ask any questions or express any concerns to the Southcreek
HOA Board.
(SC) HOA DUES
Friendly reminder! Your HOA dues help keep Southcreek looking like as
great as it does-please make it a priority to pay your dues if you have not
yet done so.
(SC) HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF DEPT.
See something fishy going on the neighborhood? Report any suspicious
activity to the Harris County Sheriff’s non-emergency line at 713-221-
6000. Remember, the patrolling Sheriff’s deputies depend on us as much
as we depend on them.
(SC) TRASH DAYS
Please be courteous to your neighbors and do not block the sidewalks
with trashcans, debris or vehicles. It creates a safety hazard because
walkers are forced to walk in the street. Violations can be issued for
blocking sidewalks. Also, please store all coolers, trashcans etc. behind
your fence, not so your neighbor can see them.
(SC) DEED RESTRICTION LETTERS
Please do not ignore deed restriction letters sent to your residence
about deed restriction violations. Doing so can subject the property
owner to a $35 charge per CERTIFIED letter if not settled by the
homeowner in the time noted in the letter. Associa (PMG) manages this
process and should be contacted If you require assistance in complying.
Associa (PMG) will work with you to get the violation resolved, IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE COVENANTS, CONDITIONS AND RESTRICITONS
EVERY HOMEOWNER AGREED TO ABIDE BY, SOME VIOLATIONS CAN BE
CURED VIA THE ASSOCIATIONS SELF HELP RESTRICTION. The Association
can hire a contractor to repair THESE VIOLATIONS and charge THE COST
OF THIS SERVICE charged back to the Home Owner.
The South Creek Village Community Association takes these violations
very seriously and strives to keep up the Southcreek standards for
attractive, well maintained homes. If you should receive a violation,
please take this seriously and CORRECT the violation. If the violation
is not CORRECTED, the Southcreek Village Community Association
will BE FORCED to turn it over to its legal representatives. Once that
happens all future expenses are born by the homeowner. There is
a charge of $125 AND UP FOR EACH LETTER. Please note that The
Southcreek Village Community Association does not want to make
the violations public. We are here to protect everybody’s property
values. Please don’t disregard the letters, work with us to maintain
property values and to keep Southcreek looking great, a place where
everyone wants to live.
(SD) ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT
Please join us for the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the pool park area (7531
Club Lake) on Saturday, April 11 th , 10:30 AM. Besides the main event
we will also have a bounce house and petting zoo this year!
To our community business owners, we are looking for donations for
raffle prizes - please contact Susan McLeroy, Social Committee Chairman
directly at susan.mcleroy@garygreene.com if you can help out. We also
need volunteers to assist on the day of the event; high school students
can get some community service hours for helping out. Volunteers can
contact Susan as well.
(SD) COMMUNITY GARAGE SALES
The Southdown Village Community Association will hold two community
wide garage sales in 2020 - April 25th and October 10 th . Owners can
participate in their own driveways. Any signs placed in the community
must be put out and taken down the day of the event and all items not
sold stored out of view the same day. Please note that these are the only
two times that garage sales will be permitted in the community.
Always take safety precautions when hosting a garage sale. Have multiple
adults working the garage sale, lock the doors to your home, close your
garage door and wear an apron or a smock to hold your change instead
of using a cash box.
(SD) MIGRATORY BIRD ADVISORY
Egrets, herons and other migratory birds are protected by international
treaty and it’s illegal for residents to harass or harm the birds once they lay
eggs. Therefore, because the condition of nesting areas creates extremely
unattractive and unsanitary conditions that can have a negative impact
on property values, we want all of the community to be aware of the
issue so that the birds’ return can be prevented this coming spring. If
you are interested in participating on the Bird Prevention Committee to
plan for the 2020 spring season at the swimming pool area, please email
creyes@grahammanagementhouston.com.
See information and tips under CCA at the front of the newsletter.
(SD) ANNUAL ASSESSMENTS
Assessments are now past due. Payments received after January 31 st
have incurred a late fee penalty and interest. Assessments may be paid
(SD) HOME ARCHITECTURAL CHANGES
Please remember that approval from the Architectural Review Committee
must be obtained prior to any changes or improvements made to the
exterior of your property, including but not limited to: repainting, roofing,
door/window replacement, siding replacement and major landscaping.
(SD) CRIME WATCH COMMITTEE
BLOCK CAPTAINS NEEDED
Why do we need Block Captains? Do they bring value to our sense of
security? Do they enhance the security of our immediate neighborhood?
Here is an example, presented by a Block Captain, of a set of events exactly
as they transpired. Read on and make your own determination. This past
holiday season, an ideal time for those with nefarious intentions to go
around looking for packages belonging to others, a neighbor contacted
his block captain and informed him of a suspicious vehicle driving around
the neighborhood. The Block Captain immediately informed all on his
block to be on the lookout. At least a couple of neighbors indicated that
they were out of town and would appreciate it if some packages they
were expecting were retrieved. Everybody looked out for each other and
nothing worth reporting happened. Be a Block Captain - your neighbors
will appreciate it and you will all be the safer for it. Contact njchaney@
sbcglobal.net if you would like more information about becoming a
Block Captain.
Remember “If you see something, say something.” Call the Sheriff’s Office
to report any suspicious activity - 713-221-6000.
SPRING BREAK
Cy-Fair schools will observe spring break March 9 th -13 th . Many families
may take short vacations. Remember the following: ask a reliable,
trustworthy person to check on your home, place a hold on your mail
delivery, stop newspaper service and remember you can request a
sheriff’s deputy to stop by and check on your home. To request a deputy
1) log onto Copperfield.org; 2) select Crime Watch and finally 3) select
forms - CCW Vacation Watch. Remember also to be a good neighbor and
report suspicious activity by calling the sheriff’s non-emergency number
713-221-6000 (#6). IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS, SAY SOMETHING
TO THE SHERIFF’S DEPT.
WESTCREEK LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
Meetings - 2 nd Monday of every month at 6:30 PM
Location - Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room
The Westcreek Landscape Committee generally meets on the 2 nd Monday
every month. If you are interested in helping make a difference in our
neighborhood and would like to become part of the group, we welcome
and encourage your attendance and hope to see you there - there is
always room for you! Contrary to popular opinions we do not do the
manual labor! We are a friendly group of decision makers!
Comments, suggestions or questions regarding common areas or other
landscape topics are always welcome. The Landscape Committee at
to answer your questions or concerns.
EASTER EGG HUNT:
We desperately need a chairperson for our very
successful Spring event. We have several volunteers,
but we can’t sponsor this event without a chairperson.
Contact any landscape member or Graham
Management for more details.
OH NO, THE BIRDS:
Spring is here and we are asking all residents to keep an eye out for the
Herons and Egrets. Prior articles have been written in the Copperfield
Newsletter and in the individual articles for each village. To repeat, if
these birds make a nest in our community it will require pool and park
closures and a tremendous expense of our HOA funds to clean up their
mess. Please be a good neighbor and report to Graham if you see these
birds in our parks, cul de sacs or in individual yards. The trees in both
parks will be trimmed in order to discourage the nesting, as will trees
along Forest Heights.
The CFISD Board of Trustees approved the calendar committee’s
recommendations for the 2020-2021 instructional calendar during
its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, January 16 th . State law
mandates that instruction for the school year may not begin before
the fourth Monday in August. For the 2020-2021 instructional year, the
earliest start date is August 24 th , which will serve as the first day of school.
made up of district-wide representation, including teachers, parents,
community members, campus administrators and support staff. The
committee worked to construct the calendar using the 75,600 minutes
needed to complete a school year required by law. The committee
recommended a calendar to the school Board that will conclude the
2020-2021 school year on May 27, 2021. In its meetings, the committee
discussed various components of developing the instructional calendars
before arriving at a consensus.
2020-2021 REGISTRATION
St. Cuthbert Episcopal School’s 2020-2021 registration is underway and
will continue each day during school hours until all spots are filled. We
offer two, three or five day classes, including a Bridge/Kindergarten class.
We take students 18 months-five years old. Our Bridge/Kindergarten
program is designed for children who are not quite ready for kindergarten.
We recognize the need to engage children with summer or fall birthdays
who are five years old and will be entering Kindergarten or first grade the
following school year, but need a bit more time before entering a rigorous
learning environment. The development of the essential building blocks
COVENANT ACADEMY HAPPENINGS
allows children to succeed at learning with greater ease and confidence, by
helping them bridge the academic and social gaps necessary to become
positive and productive classroom leaders. Our school hours are Monday-
Thursday 9 AM-2 PM and Friday 9 AM-12 Noon. The program provides
a loving, Christian environment offering the children weekly chapel, as
well as music & movement, library and computer classes. Our curriculum
includes: Learning without Tears, Handwriting without Tears, Reading
A-Z, Math and Science. The program is open to all children, regardless of
On January 15 th , Patriot Hall was transformed into a colonial parlor as the time period came
to life in our first annual 5 th Grade Colonial Feast and Ball. Students feasted on roasted
chicken, succotash, Johnny cakes, bread with butter they made themselves from cream,
beans, corn and ginger beer. They invited 6 th grade to participate in activities with them like
dipping candles, writing with real turkey quills, wax seals, making silhouettes, whirligigs
and paper dolls, as well as some games like Othello, checkers and jump rope. At the ball
they sipped on hot chocolate and munched on desserts before they learned to dance the
Minuet. ‘Twas a splendid day!
Outside in God’s creation is our
favorite place to be! Science
lessons come alive while
gardening in our beautiful
Brumlow Nature Center. Third
grade harvested broccoli from
their class garden to make
Broccoli Cheese Soup in class!
Covenant hosted our
very first episode of
Chopped Challenge
- Covenant Style with
our 8 th grade class!
Each team created
a mystery basket
of ingredients used
by one of the other
teams to create a
tasty edible dessert to
be judged. One team
won bragging rights
SCOUTS
Troop 113004 obtained plastic bags to be converted to “plarn” (plastic yarn) to make mats for the homeless in our community. They worked with a local church
with access to homeless organizations to teach members how to make the mats to be provided to those in need in our community. That’s what I call Girl Scouts
with a vision, finding solutions to problems in the Community. Way to go girls!!!
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL/COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY-COOKIES COMING SOON!
Girl Scouts will be out and about selling cookies through March 22 nd . Eager Girl Scouts will be going door to door and holding cookie booths to fund
their adventures! Please purchase a box (or 4) and help them reach their goals.
COOKIES POWER AMAZING ADVENTURES FOR GIRLS
When you buy a box of delicious Girl Scout Cookies, you’re powering amazing, year-round experiences for every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risktaker,
Leader) extraordinaire in your community who sells them-that’s right, proceeds stay local and are reinvested in girls! Big picture: as a cookie
customer, you’re actually helping the next generation of female entrepreneurs get an important taste of what it takes to be successful-teamwork,
planning and a positive outlook. Beyond that, you’re actually narrowing the gender gap in entrepreneurship by nurturing girls’ skills early and often.
How awesome is that? Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise
and law. Copper Creek Meadows Community serves girls in the residence areas for the elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding
middle and high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove, Horne,
Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center. More information
about Girl Scouts may be found on the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, www.gssjc. The Council phone number is 713-292-0300. For
BOY SCOUT TROOP 609
Boy Scout Troop 609 is a specialized for Boys with high functioning
Autism Spectrum Disorders. They meet at the Westview School on the 1 st
and 3 rd Saturday of the month from 9:30-11:30 AM.
BOY SCOUT TROOP 838
Troop 838 is a small pack located near Hwy 6 and West Road at the
Crossbridges Church. We are between the Copperfield and Aberdeen
neighborhoods. Being a smaller troop allows us to be flexible and address
the needs of our scouts more nimbly. We currently have boys from ages 11
to 17 within our group working to make Eagle. We try to camp monthly,
with a wide variety of locations on our agenda. The different locations are
chosen by the senior boys to more directly meet our training needs and
to keep expenses low. In fact, we have some of the lowest expenses in the
area. Our adult leaders are all experienced with years of scouting under
their belt per individual. We also work closely with several local packs of
cub scouts and participate in civic duties around the area as well. Please
contact us at TROOP838CYPRESS.ORG or 414-331-3321.
TROOP 1865
Troop 1865 runs a diverse program of outdoor and service activities,
with events selected by the scouts themselves. We meet Mondays at 6:30
PM, at the Copperfield HOA building on Willow River and Hwy 6, behind
Labay. We’ve gone backpacking through the National Forest, rappelling
off Enchanted Rock, Survival camping, boating, canoeing and anything
else the scouts can dream up. We do high-adventure camping at
Philmont and Seabase. Our advancement program has enabled scout to
achieve the coveted rank of Eagle Scout at 10 times the national average
rate. We see scouting as a practice run on adult life. Scouts learn about
leadership and teamwork through having to work together in the field.
We learn about responsibility through fund-raising activities that have
allowed the entire troop to pay for their own summer camp each year.
CUB SCOUT PACK 2
We are an active year round pack for Kindergarten-5 th grade that focuses on
life skills, teamwork, leadership and FUN! Cub Scout activities include camping,
fishing, pinewood derby, hiking and much more! During the school year we meet
on the 3 rd Monday of each month at 7 PM at Birkes Elementary in the cafeteria.
Contact me for more information and to find out what exciting activities we have
planned for summer! Ame Lane-281-740-5020, ame.lane@yahoo.com.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills,
outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives The Boy
Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow
them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. •
Reinforce ethical standards.. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they
are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal
responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to
be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help
our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area
March Gardening Tips
VEGETABLES
• Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and
pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra
(if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern
peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.
LAWN
• Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of
Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun).
• When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY
the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.
com/grass.htm.
TREES AND SHRUBS
• Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In
shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a
dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or
one of the prostrate junipers.
• Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March.
However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have
bloomed.
• Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer
analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square
feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize
landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring
growing season starts.
