FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Triple Play Concert Series
headliners announced
New Lenox residents
have known for nearly a
month that ZZ Top is one
of the headliners for the
Triple Play Concert Series
this summer after the band
released its tour dates,
which included a stop in
the Commons on July 3.
Mayor Tim Baldermann
announced the full lineup
at the Village Board meeting
on Feb. 24.
This summer’s lineup
includes Dennis DeYoung,
formerly of Styx, on June
13; ZZ Top on July 3; and
Billy Idol concluding the
summer concert series on
Aug. 8.
This year’s lineup has
Baldermann and the rest
of the board excited that
New Lenox continues to
bring in big-name artists.
ZZ Top is in the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame. Styx
was inducted, as well.
“I think it says that we
have a great reputation,”
Baldermann said. “All
of these bands and their
management talk to each
other. This is the 12th year
now, and clearly the word
is out that we’re a firstclass,
professionally-run
operation when it comes
to these concerts. The fact
that we’re getting this caliber
of talent is just amazing
and awesome for our
people, and I’m excited
that we can bring it back.”
Baldermann said a lot
goes into the searching
and planning of who is going
to be available and be
a good fit in New Lenox.
He added that he is unsure
of when, exactly, tickets
will go on sale, but he
is eyeing early April.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
Pastor and family of
Mokena Baptist church OK
after blaze
A GoFundMe page for
the McCurdy family, of
Frankfort, was started following
a fire at the family’s
home Feb. 24.
Frankfort Fire Protection
District responded to
a call around 10:27 a.m. in
the 300 block of East Nebraska
Street, and the fire
reportedly was brought
under control within 15
minutes.
Brandon McCurdy, the
pastor at Mokena Baptist
Church, said no one
was injured in the fire.
His wife, Rachel, and
their goldendoodle, Wrigley,
were inside the home
when the fire started, but
the couple’s two daughters
were in school at the time.
A family friend set up a
GoFundMe page to assist
the McCurdys. The campaign
had raised $6,375 in
its first 15 hours.
“We have a lot of really
great people in our life,”
Brandon said. “We’re very
grateful. … We’re grateful
the Lord’s protected us.
Things can be replaced;
people can’t.”
FFPD wrote that the
cause of the fire is still under
investigation.
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
LW East grad Leonard
goes from walk-on to star
closer on Iowa baseball
team
Grant Leonard was
ready to give up baseball.
The Mokena native and
Lincoln-Way East graduate
went to North Central
College in Naperville for
the 2015-2016 school year,
ready to begin his career as
a pitcher for the Cardinals
baseball team.
Leonard went through
fall practices and scrimmages
and enjoyed that,
but things just did not feel
right.
“At North Central, the
baseball program was
amazing, but everything
else about it wasn’t really
for me,” he said. “I wanted
to go to a bigger school.
“My dad [Mike] went to
Iowa, and I was always an
Iowa fan growing up. I had
a feel for the campus, and I
just had it in my heart that
it’s where I wanted to be.
I decided that if I couldn’t
play baseball at Iowa, I’d
still be happy being there
as a student.”
Leonard gave up his
baseball scholarship and
headed to Iowa, initially
unsure if he would even
get the chance to walk on
to the Hawkeyes’ baseball
team.
Fast forward four years,
and Leonard has started
his redshirt senior season,
his fourth with the Hawkeyes.
He is coming off a
year where he established
himself as one of the top
relief pitchers in the Big
Ten and etched his name in
Iowa’s record books.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
Themed night at local yoga
studio attracts guests old,
new
The Lotus Moon Air
Mat Fusion Yoga Studio in
Lockport was transported
back to the 1980s on Feb.
21 for a yogaerobics dance
class.
With classic hits like the
B-52’s “Love Shack” and
Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It”
blaring from the speakers,
instructor Geri Desmond
led an hour-long choreographed
aerobics and yoga
routine. Lotus Moon regulars
arrived at the studio
wearing their best ’80s
wardrobes, including neon
leotards, leg warmers and
sweatbands.
The Lotus Moon studio
opened in November,
and the team has since
settled into the community.
Owner Cher Venhuizen
explained that she is
looking for a way to make
fitness more fun by expanding
their classes. The
girls’ night idea allows
Venhuizen and Desmond
to showcase their creativity
and create fun events
for the community.
The class included a
mix of lunges, side steps,
squats and various arm
movements perfectly
synced to top ’80s hits.
Desmond incorporated
yoga movements into the
choreography as a way to
break up the cardio-intensive
aerobic exercises. The
session ended with core
strength and stretching.
