Devoted husband of Josephine (Maier); loving father of the late William E. “ Billy” Toomey Jr., Christine (Christopher) Sanchez, and Janet Toomey; cherished Opa of Samantha and Alec Sanchez; and Grandpa to Robin Toomey, Billy Toomey, and Jenny Toomey; also survived by his beloved dog Murphy, siblings, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents William E. and Dolores (Carlin) Toomey. Bill was a United States Army Veteran and retired from the CTA after 27 years of dedicated employment. Beloved wife of 21 years and high school sweethearts since the age of 16 to Christopher Sanchez; devoted mother of Samantha and Alec Sanchez; beloved daughter of Josephine and the late William “Bill” E. Toomey Sr. (Maier); also survived by her beloved animals Odie, Rosie, Ruby, Murph, and Niran. She was preceded in death by her brother William E. “ Billy” Toomey Jr. Christine was a graduate of Maria high school and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from UIC. She was a Paraprofessional for School District 159 and loved cooking and decorating. Christine was kind and generous person, who would welcome you into her home with open arms. She was a devoted wife, mother, and daughter who will always be remembered and never forgotten. The family will receive friends at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, 102 E. newlenoxpatriotdaily.com life & Arts the new lenox patriot | March 12, 2020 | 15 LW’s Symphony Orchestra goes on theatrical journey 2 Laurie Fanelli Freelance Reporter “The Music of the Night” sounded delightful on the afternoon of March 1, as the Lincoln-Way Symphony Orchestra — featuring Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way West High School musicians — performed a comprehensive season concert at the Stark Center for the Performing Arts at Lincoln-Way Central. Beginning with the overture to “Die leichte Kavallerie,” an operetta by Franz von Suppé, and ending with highlights from Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera,” the program featured a theatrical theme during a musical journey that spanned the globe. Stacy Williams-Jackson — director of Orchestras for LW Central and LW West, and music department chair at LW Central — explained that the concert was bittersweet as it marked the end of the Symphony Orchestra’s 2019- 2020 season. Backstage prior to the performance, she expressed gratitude for the commitment of all the talented musicians. “There is absolutely nothing holding them to come to rehearsals on Monday,” she said. “It’s completely volunteer, and I have these students show up every Monday for 90 minutes, September through today wanting to play classical music and wanting to play together. We’ve had so much fun. We’ve played some really great music and they keep developing as musicians. I’m so proud of them.” During Maurice Ravel’s “Boléro,” everyone in attendance was struck by the dedication of percussionist Tanner Day. The piece was written when the composer first showed signs of aphasia and dementia, and Williams-Jackson explained that the piece’s repetitive snare motives explore Ravel’s “first steps into this murky world of his brain.” “It’s a snare drum player’s worst nightmare to have to play ‘Boléro.’ We’re shortening it to about an eight minute-long song,” Williams-Jackson said noting that the original composition is 15 minutes long. “The snare drum player plays the exact same thing for the entire song. It’s just a slow burn until the end, but it’s all about that snare motive that never, ever, ever, ever ends. Every time I’ve seen it performed, the snare drum gets a standing ovation because it’s a grinder to do the same thing without messing up, without losing it for minutes and minutes and minutes. It’s a really cool piece. It’s very trance-like.” Another one of the program’s highlights came in the form of Isaac Albéniz’s “Tango in D” featuring guitarist Nate Jackson, the guitar instructor at LW Central and West, as well as Williams-Jackson’s husband. “What’s really special is that there are three students in the Symphony who are also in the guitar studio program, so they’re seeing their teacher, Mr. Jackson, perform,” Williams-Jackson said. “It’s nice that we have that moment where they can all be on stage together during something kind of unique. I really like that. Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media slow dancing.” For senior LW West violinist Emma Bruno the “Phantom of the Opera” finale was her favorite piece of the season. “I think ‘Phantom of the Opera’ was the first Broadway show I saw in third grade, so it’s definitely been part of my life for a very long time,” Bruno said with a laugh. “I actually see it every year, so to be in it, playing it, is even better.” This year’s Lincoln- Way Symphony Orchestra season concert was extra special, as it not only celebrated the 2019-2020 program, but it also marks the final performance for the seniors, many of whom were among the group’s founding members four years ago. Senior LW West violinist Zoë Linko said she hopes that the next generation will continue the group’s commitment to sharing their talent with the community. “I think the Symphony Orchestra is so great because we never get the opportunity to play with the band usually, so to have the different instruments gives it a different sound and makes it feel more whole,” Linko said. “Also, to play with some of the younger kids, I think it’s nice to pass on what we know to them so when they’re in our position they will do an even better job.” Bluff Pointe March is Music In Our Schools Month, and LW Central had a packed calendar throughout with a Choral Concert that took place March 3; a Band Concert that took place March 5; Swing Knight Gala that (815) 953-9100 CUSTOM RANCHES AND 2STORYHOMES VIEW VIRTUAL TOURS ATOMALLEYBUILDERS.COM took place March 6; String Step-up Concert that took place Tuesday, March 10; and a Percussion Concert set for March 17.
