Village rebates $1.4 million in
property taxes to its residents
Sean Hastings, Editor
The Village of New Lenox’s
philosophy is that it will take
what it needs to provide the services
for the people and return
what it has left over.
“It’s something that we promised
the people a long time ago
that we were going to rebate
property taxes and increase it
as often as we can,” Mayor Tim
Baldermann said. “We’ve increased
it every year.”
Residents in the Village of
New Lenox were rebated 80
percent of their property taxes,
totalling more than $1.4 million.
Baldermann said the plan
is to increase it by 5 percent
each year to hopefully one year
rebate 100 percent. And if extra
dollars come in, they put that on
top.
The rebates were sent out
March 3. The rebates are only
for homeowners in the Village.
Unincorporated residents do not
receive a rebate because they do
not pay taxes to the Village.
Baldermann said one of the
biggest questions is: “why don’t
you just lower the taxes.”
“This is for homestead property
and owners,” he said. “It’s
not for rental units and commercial
retail and anyone else.
If we lowered it more, industrial
commercial and retail would see
the biggest benefit. EAV comes
from those other non-residential
users.”
He said it is better to collect
then give back.
“Our number one priority
is that people are getting quality
services,” Baldermann said.
“Once we see we have the money
to do that, we’d rather give it
back to the people.”
The Village could, if it wanted,
keep all the money and
stockpile it into reserves. The
Village always has a standard
practice to have 90-120 days
worth of money in reserves.
Another way the Village has
been able to do this is when
there are new projects, it finds
new revenue resources to pay
for it, Baldermann said.
Baldermann also noted that
residents in New Lenox that
live in the Union School District
will soon have 100 percent
of that property tax rebated.
“If the government runs efficiently,
whether it is the Village,
school districts, or anything,
just take the dollars needed to
provide services, don’t waste
money and give back.”
NL, Mokena combine for 2020 expo
Sean Hastings, Editor
The Mokena and New Lenox
Chambers of Commerce are scheduled
to host a joint business Expo
at Lincoln-Way Central High
School — 1801 E. Lincoln Highway
in New Lenox — from 9 a.m.-
1 p.m. March 14.
The expo will be open to the
public and admission is free.
As of Monday, March, 9, over 90
local businesses from the Mokena
and New Lenox areas had signed
on to be vendors, said New Lenox
Chamber of Commerce CEO Emily
Johnson, with more expected as
the event draws closer.
“We wanted to do something to
switch up our expos and make it
more of a destination expo instead
of only in our town,” said Melissa
Fedora, Mokena Chamber of Commerce
Executive Director.
Johnson and Fedora had tossed
around the idea of combining expos
for a few years now.
“Since my first one, there were
all these expos and I thought ‘Why
are there so many?’ and we’re asking
the same businesses to go to
more than one,” Johnson said.
Fedora said vendors will be allowed
to sell their goods and services
at the expo, and concessions
will be available, as well.
The joint expo will give residents
of both villages an opportunity to
see what the other offers, as well as
allow businesses to network with
each other.
“A lot of it is helping businesses
connect,” Johnson said. “Those
business-to-business relationships
are important, too. Something New
Lenox might not have, Mokena
might. It helps the businesses expand
their customer reach.”
Vendors can still register to participate
in the event through March
11.
Library celebrates National Oreo Day with taste tests
Sean Hastings, Editor
top.
The New Lenox Public
Library held an Oreo tastetesting
event on Friday,
March 6 for teens. Teen
coordinator Melissa Leggero
had to turn to Amazon
to track down extra
flavors that she could not
find in store.
“I did something similar
before. It was a pizzatasting
contest, but this
was the first time with
Oreos,” Leggero said. “I
wasn’t sure how this was
going to go. I had things
planned, but I think some
kids didn’t know that, so
they just came and went,
but that worked too. For
a teen program, this was a
The flavors included
chocolate peanut butter
pie, dark chocolate, lemon,
peanut butter cream, classic,
mint cream, chocolate
marshmallow, carrot cake,
birthday cake, caramel coconut
and golden. There
are even more that she did
not get. A majority of the
teens and Leggero did not
know that some of the flavors
existed.
“These were just the
ones I could get a hold of,”
Leggero said. “I think this
was enough. This is a good
representation.”
Two of the attendees
were sisters, Ryan, a seventh-grader
at Liberty Jr.
High, and Jaden Williams,
a fifth-grader at Oakview.
Ryan said her favorite
was mint cream, and Jaden
said her favorite was birthday
cake, though the two
both agreed that classic
and golden still top the list.
Mint cream and carrot
cake received the secondmost
votes, and caramel
coconut received the least.
Though it was not a
Pictured are some of the different Oreos the teens tried
during the library's event.
group favorite, Leggero’s
favorite was lemon.
“It might sound odd,
but I love lemon-flavored
things,” she said. “It’s different.
You don’t think it’s
going to taste like a lemon
when you’re eating an
Oreo. It’s unique.”
Attendees were also put
into a raffle to take home
a pack of their choice of
Oreos. It was not part of
the taste testing, but the
pistachio flavor drew positive
attention as an option
to take home.
Moving forward, Leggero
hopes to have more
taste-testing events and
even try to combine to
have a teen and adult
event.
“Teens like food, and
that usually draws them in,
but I think adults do, too,”
Leggero said. “Especially
free food that is available.
Over the summer is World
Chocolate Day, so I want
to try and get different
types of chocolate. These
are pretty successful programs.”

Residents donate blood,
receive pint of ice cream
Sean Hastings, Editor
“Give a pint, get a pint.”
That was the motto for the
blood drive coordinated by
Kevin Molloy State Farm
and Dr. Paul Etchison of
Nelson Ridge Family Dental.
The two businesses collaborated
to host a blood
drive, filling 28 out of a
possible 32 spots, and rewarded
each donor with
either a pint of Haagen-
Dazs or Baskin Robbins
ice cream, or a pint of
Guinness, just in time for
St. Patrick’s Day.
“I try to be creative
with it to draw attention
to it,” Molloy said. “Just
to get five people to say ‘I
wouldn’t mind ice cream’
and come out and donate.
This type of stuff, let’s be
honest, it’s not the type
of stuff that is in your top
10 of wanting to do. This
might put you over the
edge. I’d encourage you to
I can

do it one time.”
Molloy aims to do a
drive in March and August
each year.
“The method to the madness
is that by the end of
winter, the banks are really
really low,” Molloy said.
“They get his jolt in March,
April, May and June and
then vacations happen. We
try to push one out to August
and fill 32 spots.”
All aboard the Brothership
New Lenox man
a brewer at new
Mokena brewery
T.J. Kremer III
Contributing Editor
With the popularity of
craft beer reaching the
stratosphere, Brothership
Brewing in Mokena
opened its doors at the end
of February.
No, this isn’t science fiction:
It’s science fact.
The brewery and taproom
— tucked inside a
converted industrial warehouse
space located at
18781 S. 90th Ave. Unit
E, and decked out to look
like the inside of a hanger
at Area 51 — is the outof-this-world
brain-child
of five local men: brewers
Ryne Willig, of New
Lenox, and Kyle Obright,
of Oak Forest; along with
investors Tom Soltis and
Pat Murphy, both of Frankfort,
and John Panozzo, of
Beverly.
It all started with Willig
and Obright home-brewing
their own New Englandstyle
IPA, which they touted
at multiple competitions
and won several awards
for, including a first-place
awards for IPAs at the Skeleton
Key Homebrew Competition
and Brixtoberfest,
where their IPA also took
home a second-place nod
for Best in Show.
“We were brewing beer
just for fun, trying to recreate
flavors that we’ve tried
and didn’t have access to
in the area five years ago,
specifically New Englandstyle
IPAs, hazy IPAs,”
Willig said. “It looks like
fruit juice and has those
kind of tropical flavors associated
with it. And then
we were sharing our beer
with people, friends and
family, and the feedback
New Lenox gears up for 2020 Census
Submitted by the Village of
New Lenox
The Village of New Lenox
is excited to announce that
they are partnering with the
U.S. Census Bureau to support
the 2020 Census.
The Census is conducted
every 10 years to count the
country’s population, which
then determines the number
of seats each state receives in
the House of Representatives,
as well as funding for state and
local governments.
The Census population not
only determines the amount
of state shared revenue, which
includes income tax, use tax
and motor fuel tax that the Village
receives from the state,
which is approximately $165
per capita but also to market
the Village to the types of developers
it wants to see invest
in New Lenox.
Last year, the Village created
a Complete Count Committee
to devise various ways
to help promote the 2020 Census
within their specific organizations
as well as throughout
the community.
This year, the Village would
like to obtain at least a 90 percent
response rate. Between
March 12–20, all households
will receive an invitation in
the mail to respond to the 2020
Census.
Residents can respond online,
by phone or a paper copy.
Village Hall will have computers
available for those who do
not have personal computers.
FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND
LTHS Mathletes place
third at regional, advance
to state
On Feb. 21, the team
of Lockport Township
High School
Mathletes put up impressive
numbers in
their regional competition,
placing third overall,
with two students
earning perfect scores
for the event.
Seniors Daniel Cruz
and Allison Brown led
their team to the highest
placement LTHS
has ever earned in the
regional competition.
Taking place at Lincoln-
Way East, the mathletes
earned medals and ribbons
in nine different
categories.
was really good.”
Brothership Brewing incorporates
a 10-barrel system
with three fermenters
capable of producing 20
half-barrels of their brew
at a time.
The brewery and taproom
will also offer a
guest beer with a glutenfree
option.
The 3,600-square-foot
space will allow for a multitude
of varying entertainment
and special event options,
as well.
Those interested in
keeping up to date on the
latest developments and
offerings of Brothership
The regional competition
featured a panel of
judges who gave scores
for two categories —
oral and written.
The team chose to
focus its presentation
on voting methods and
were given one month to
prepare. They knew the
breakdown of scoring,
by which each judge
would give a total of 25
points, with 13 points
given for their knowledge
of the topic they
presented, and 12 points
for the composition and
professionalism of their
presentation.
Lucky is a very loving, sweet and cuddly Labrador
Retriever mix. This sweet boy picked us to be his
family at our local animal shelter after being in a
months. From the second we brought him home,
he has been so loving and great with our family.
Letter to the Editor
How Silver Cross and
Amita Health are handling
the coronavirus
Dear Editor,
As your community hospitals,
our No. 1 priority
at Silver Cross Hospital
in New Lenox and Amita
Health Saint Joseph Medical
Center in Joliet is to
keep our patients and families,
healthcare workers
and staff safe.
As you read and hear
more about the novel coronavirus
(COVID-19) in national
and local media, we
wanted to reassure you that
we are closely monitoring
the situation and stand
ready to respond should
patients present with CO-
VID-19.
While COVID-19 itself
is new, preparing for
responses to disasters, including
potential epidemics
and pandemics (e.g.,
H1N1, Swine Flu, Ebola),
is not new for our hospitals.
Emergency preparedness
I prefer Chips Ahoy to
Oreos, but I’m still a big
fan of Oreos. I’ve stuck
with the typical flavors:
classic and golden. But
the seasonal Christmas
style — the ones with
frosting around the cookie
— might be the best, but
those were not an option
at the library’s Oreo taste
testing event to celebrate
National Oreo Day on
Friday, March 6.
I did not know a majority
of the flavors existed.
And that is OK. Some of
the unique flavors definitely
struck a palate, but a
few should have been left
training is a year-round activity
that is done at both of
our hospitals, and we are
working closely with the
Centers for Disease Control
(CDC), the Illinois Department
of Public Health
(IDPH), and local public
health departments to prepare
for COVID-19. We
are closely monitoring the
situation, including following
all updates and guidance
from CDC and IDPH.
Although Silver Cross
Hospital and Amita Health
Saint Joseph Medical Center
have no patients who
have tested positive for
COVID-19 to date, we are
ready: we know how to
isolate patients within our
facilities and what services
and equipment are needed;
and we will contact our local
and state Departments
of Public Health to coordinate
testing and the appropriate
care.
What’s more, we continue
to communicate important
updates to our patients/
families, healthcare workers,
and staff promptly as
on the drawing board.
For starters, peanut butter
is always a no go for
me, so I didn’t even try it.
A nice surprise was carrot
cake. I had no idea what to
expect, but it was one of
the better ones.
Caramel coconut was
unanimously the least
favorite among myself
and the teens participating
in the event. While
every other flavor received
at least one 10/10 vote,
caramel coconut received
none. It was one bite and
throw it out bad.
Mint cream was one of
the favorites among the
needed. We are confident
that we can continue to
provide safe, effective, and
an unrivaled healthcare experience,
even in the face
of an infectious diseases
outbreak.
Our respective Infection
Prevention and Emergency
Preparedness teams have
been working tirelessly
over the last weeks to prepare
and refine dedicated
COVID-19 response plans.
Much is still unknown
about COVID-19, but a
clearer picture is emerging,
teens. That one is easy to
be good. I just think of the
Girl Scout Thin Mints or
the mint chocolate chip ice
cream. But the way I see
it with the unique flavors
is that they are not ones
you stock up your pantry
with. It’s a “hey, why not”
purchase at the grocery
store. Though I still don’t
see myself doing that.
The library is hoping to
have similar events in the
future, which may include
chocolate and ice cream
taste tests, combining the
teen and adult programs.
I might have to check out
those events, as well.
and hospitals like Silver
Cross and Amita Health
Saint Joseph are refining
our responses regularly
based on new information
as it becomes available. As
always, community health
remains our top priority.
Sincerely,
LW’s Symphony Orchestra goes on theatrical journey
2
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
“The Music of the Night”
sounded delightful on the
afternoon of March 1, as
the Lincoln-Way Symphony
Orchestra — featuring
Lincoln-Way Central and
Lincoln-Way West High
School musicians — performed
a comprehensive
season concert at the Stark
Center for the Performing
Arts at Lincoln-Way Central.
Beginning with the overture
to “Die leichte Kavallerie,”
an operetta by Franz
von Suppé, and ending with
highlights from Andrew
Lloyd-Webber’s “Phantom
of the Opera,” the program
featured a theatrical theme
during a musical journey
that spanned the globe.
Stacy Williams-Jackson
— director of Orchestras
for LW Central and LW
West, and music department
chair at LW Central
— explained that the concert
was bittersweet as it
marked the end of the Symphony
Orchestra’s 2019-
2020 season. Backstage
prior to the performance,
she expressed gratitude for
the commitment of all the
talented musicians.
“There is absolutely
nothing holding them to
come to rehearsals on
Monday,” she said. “It’s
completely volunteer,
and I have these students
show up every Monday
for 90 minutes, September
through today wanting to
play classical music and
wanting to play together.
We’ve had so much fun.
We’ve played some really
great music and they keep
developing as musicians.
I’m so proud of them.”
During Maurice Ravel’s
“Boléro,” everyone in attendance
was struck by the
dedication of percussionist
Tanner Day. The piece was
written when the composer
first showed signs of aphasia
and dementia, and Williams-Jackson
explained
that the piece’s repetitive
snare motives explore
Ravel’s “first steps into this
murky world of his brain.”
“It’s a snare drum
player’s worst nightmare
to have to play ‘Boléro.’
We’re shortening it to
about an eight minute-long
song,” Williams-Jackson
said noting that the original
composition is 15 minutes
long. “The snare drum
player plays the exact same
thing for the entire song.
It’s just a slow burn until
the end, but it’s all about
that snare motive that never,
ever, ever, ever ends.
Every time I’ve seen it
performed, the snare drum
gets a standing ovation because
it’s a grinder to do the
same thing without messing
up, without losing it for
minutes and minutes and
minutes. It’s a really cool
piece. It’s very trance-like.”
Another one of the program’s
highlights came in
the form of Isaac Albéniz’s
“Tango in D” featuring guitarist
Nate Jackson, the guitar
instructor at LW Central
and West, as well as Williams-Jackson’s
husband.
“What’s really special is
that there are three students
in the Symphony who are
also in the guitar studio
program, so they’re seeing
their teacher, Mr. Jackson,
perform,” Williams-Jackson
said. “It’s nice that we
have that moment where
they can all be on stage
together during something
kind of unique. I really like
that. It’s a very sweet short
piece and it kind of makes
you think of summer and
The Lincoln-Way Symphony Orchestra performs “Die leichte Kavallerie,” an operetta by Franz von Suppé during
the 2019-2020 Season Concert. Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
slow dancing.”
For senior LW West
violinist Emma Bruno the
“Phantom of the Opera” finale
was her favorite piece
of the season.
“I think ‘Phantom of the
Opera’ was the first Broadway
show I saw in third
grade, so it’s definitely
been part of my life for a
very long time,” Bruno said
with a laugh. “I actually see
it every year, so to be in it,
playing it, is even better.”
This year’s Lincoln-
Way Symphony Orchestra
season concert was extra
special, as it not only celebrated
the 2019-2020
program, but it also marks
the final performance for
the seniors, many of whom
were among the group’s
founding members four
years ago.
Senior LW West violinist
Zoë Linko said she hopes
that the next generation
will continue the group’s
commitment to sharing
their talent with the community.
“I think the Symphony
Orchestra is so great because
we never get the opportunity
to play with the
band usually, so to have the
different instruments gives
it a different sound and
makes it feel more whole,”
Linko said. “Also, to play
with some of the younger
kids, I think it’s nice to pass
on what we know to them
so when they’re in our position
they will do an even
better job.”
Library celebrating National
Poetry Month with a contest
Sean Hastings, Editor
The New Lenox Public
Library is looking for poets
of all skill levels between
grades 7-12 to kick
off a monthlong poetry
celebration.
The library is holding its
second annual poetry contest
beginning March 15
and concluding April 15,
when the poems will be
judged by university English
professors as well as
high school English teachers.
As the teen coordinator,
Melissa Leggero is
always trying to find ways
to “bring the library to the
students.”
“Last year was a good
turnout,” she said. “We
wanted to get into the high
schools and get into the
middle schools, and we
did a good job of that. I
would love to have even
more this year. It’s in its
second year, so I think it
will catch on.”
The poems will be
judged on vocabulary and
structure, idea and theme,
and tone and mood. One
submission is allowed per
person. Two winners for
grades 7-9 and 10-12 will
be chosen. Winners will
receive a gift card likely to
Amazon, Starbucks or the
movie theater.
Following the conclusion
of the contest, the
library will put together a
book of all the entries and
will remain on display for
people to read.
“I think my favorite part
is interacting with more
kids and sharing what
the library has to offer,”
Leggero said. “They’re
not reading the program
guides, or on Facebook.
We market to the adults.
This helps us get to know
what they like and helps
determine programs.”
Jeanie Marie Balke
Jeanie Marie Balke, age 63 passed away peacefully at her home in New
elegance, unwavering grace and unparalleled strength. Her fortitude and
resilience were beyond exceptional through a battle with cancer throughout
the past four years and at the center of this incomprehensible determination
are her granddaughters. To use Jeanie’s words, “they are the spirit of my life.”
While her example of living may be unattainable for most, she leaves behind
the most positive of legacies to strive toward for all who had the sincere honor
and privilege of living this life with her.
Every thought that we
think,
Every word that we tweet
Every action that we
Has an effect on us each
If we could do all of these
with gratitude & love,
We would be blessed by
the great spirit above.
We take so much for
really are,
Because we are really a
bright light that shines like
For our spiritual parents,
The lives that we live will
So my wish for you each
A veritable pot-luck of the Irish on tap for the southwest suburbs
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
If we’re being honest —
and we always are — St.
Patrick’s Day celebrations
might be less about the
food and more about the
beverages.
But while singing along
with the bagpipes, staring
into the abyss of an empty
green beer glass and trying
to find a bathroom might
be part and parcel for the
holiday around the southwest
suburbs, we would
be remiss if we didn’t encourage
you to enjoy being
Irish for a day responsibly.
And that starts with getting
a good meal.
Thankfully, special
menu offerings for the
Paddy’s celebration are as
plentiful around these parts
as festive atmospheres.
Here are just a few of our
favorites.
Shamrock shindig
Tom Kelly’s Chophouse and
Pub, 495 Degroate Road in
New Lenox
Kelly Trumpey, coowner
of Tom Kelly’s,
has called March “their
month,” and rightfully so.
For the 13th year in a
row, the pub is putting on
its much anticipated St.
Patrick’s Day Tent Party,
which is to include live
music on March 13 and 14.
“It’s a lot of fun, because
you see a lot of people that
you may not see all year
’round and get to reconnect
with customers,” Trumpey
said. “Everyone’s in such
a great mood and having
fun.”
Epic, a 1980s cover band,
is to kick off the weekend
with a performance at 8:30
p.m. Friday. Saturday’s
lineup includes two bands:
Honeydew Squeeze at 4:30
p.m. and Hillbilly Rockstarz
at 8:30 p.m.
The weekend-long event
will debut a family day on
Sunday for children and
their families.
“Parents should be able
to go out and celebrate,
so we try to create a day
where they can come back
and do it as a family,”
Trumpey said.
That event will include
face painting, scavenger
hunts, games, crafts and
more.
Tom Kelly’s also has
a special Guinness and
corned beef meal available
on March 17.
Pelican Harry’s Sports Grill,
14807 S. Founders Crossing
in Homer Glen
While Pelican Harry’s
is to have its annual St.
Patrick’s Day Bash a little
early on Friday, March 13,
including Irish dancers
performing at 9 p.m. that
evening, there will still be
a mixture of festive menu
options to be had on St.
Patrick’s Day on Tuesday,
March 17.
To eat, patrons will have
their choice of a corned
beef sandwich ($6.95)
— a homemade specialty,
served on toasted rye
and with a side — or the
corned beef plate ($9.95),
which comes with red potatoes
and carrots.
Those looking to celebrate
Reubens aren’t strictly Irish. Pizza isn’t Irish at all. But that has not stopped the
melting pot that is Aurelio’s Reuben pizza from becoming a decade-plus hit for St.
While many area residents
will be feasting on
corned beef and cabbage,
Aurelio’s in Mokena has
something special on its
menu for St. Patrick’s
Day: the Reuben pizza.
With a Thousand Island
dressing base, topped with
corned beef, sauerkraut,
swiss cheese and no-burn
mozzarella cheese, the
Reuben pizza has been a
popular menu item for the
past 11 years. It is offered
only two times during the
year: around St. Patrick’s
Day and in September for
Halfway to St. Patrick’s
Day.
The Reuben pizza goes
on the menu starting Monday,
March 16, and will
remain only while supplies
last. The pizza will also be
offered at Aurelio’s Frankfort
location, 9901 W. Lincoln
be served all day March
14, 15 and 17, Jameson’s
General Manager George
To create a party-friendly
plans to break out the
a tent on the patio, in addition
to hiring a DJ for
the evening of March 14,
Tinley Park
There is no need to
at Chi-Town Harley
Davidson’s St. Patrick’s
The event is to be held
from noon-3 p.m. Saturday,
March 14, and all are
welcome to enjoy green
beer and corned beef sliders,
free of charge.
According to Marketing
Director Diane Tragos,
in addition to celebrating
St. Patrick’s Day, this is
an opportunity for newcomers
to see what Chi-
Town Harley Davidson is
all about and browse the
showroom. Riders also
can shop for apparel, parts
and accessories during the
event.
Guests can choose from
a green Miller Lite, Coors
By this point, you have
regrettably missed the
Irish Music Trolley that
stopped here and six other
Irish (and Irish-ish) spots
in Orland Park on Saturday,
March 7. Thankfully,
The Irish Patriot keeps the
party going.
From 4-11 p.m. Saturday,
March 14, that means
live music by RUA at the
pub. On Sunday, March
15, there will be a St. Patrick’s
Day Pre-Party, featuring
a DJ from noon-4
p.m. And on the big day
itself — Tuesday, March
17 — RUA is to perform
again live from 4-11 p.m.,
with bagpipers also making
an appearance at some
point during the festivities.
So, what to eat? Irish
Patriot’s menu will be limited,
but guests can expect
the staples. That means
corned beef and cabbage,
fish and chips, and shepherd’s
pie.
What about drink specials
all weekend? Of
course! What kind of pub
do you take this for?
Distinctive Home Builders Debuts Luxury Furnished Model
At Hanover Estates in Manhattan within the Lincoln-Way School District
Distinctive Home Builders
continues to add high
quality homes to the
Manhattan landscape at
Hanover Estates; its latest
new home community
located within the highlyregarded
Lincoln-Way
School District. Distinctive
is selling Craftsman
Series and Legacy Series
single family homes with
base prices from the upper
$290s - $400s. Square
footage of the ranch
homes begins at 2,400
square feet and the twostory
homes start from
2,700 square feet. Many
of the sites in both neighborhoods
offer lake views
and all homes will have
brick around the first
floor as a premium standard
feature.
“Sales and construction
are underway and a
brand new Stonebridge
II model is open for touring,”
said Bryan Nooner,
President of Distinctive
Home Builders, “These
new home designs are a
result of an extraordinary
amount of time and effort
spent on refining the
architectural standards.”
“There is indeed a difference
– there is nothing
else like it on the market
– the elevations are outstanding
and our homeowners
also have the ability
to customize so they
can truly have the home
of their dreams,” he said.
Nooner speaks of the
Craftsman designs the
company has introduced
at Hanover Estates. These
new designs feature low
pitched rooflines, large
front porches with tapered
columns and stone
piers, partially-paned
windows, gable brackets,
and an exterior color
palate with a variety of
earth tones or gray tones.
Popular exterior options
are stone and cedar shake
accents.
Besides the new model,
there are several homes
at various stages of construction
are available to
tour and as a semi-custom
builder, Distinctive can
modify any of its standard
designs to cater to a
customer’s tastes, which
means that moving walls,
adding extra windows or
even extending the garage
are all possible.
Numerous home styles
are available, each with
multiple exterior elevations.
Hanover Estates
homes have three to five
bedrooms and two full to
three and one-half baths
and two to three-car garages.
All of the Legacy
Series homes will have
three-car garages.
Homes include custom
maple kitchen cabinets
featuring solid wood
construction (no particle
board) with solid
wood drawers and dove
tail joints; ceramic tile
or hardwood floors in
the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood
trim and doors; granite
countertops and
concrete driveways.
Building a new home is
certainly not what it used
to be. Thankfully, the latest
technology coupled
with fine-tuned people
skills, has made the experience
an exciting one for
Distinctive buyers at Hanover
Estates.
“We are on the leading
edge when it comes to the
home buying customer
sales experience,” said
Nooner. “Our sales professionals
are among the
best. We provide them
with high-level training
and the latest tech tools to
enhance our homebuyer’s
experience. We also provide
technology to our
homeowners throughout
the home building
process with a private
homeowner portal app.
Building a new home is
an exciting yet long process
that can have many
ups and downs that can
be neutralized by simply
having great communication.
We want our buyers
to be informed and empowered
every step of the
way.”
Daily pictures of customer
homes in progress
are taken and uploaded
for easy access from
anywhere in the world.
Homeowners can view
their selections from their
phone, tablet or desktop;
review detailed information
about the quality
components used in their
new home, and easily access
their documents using
a username and password
that is issued once
construction of their new
home begins.
“Communication exists
on an entirely new level
making building with us a
very personal experience.
Never before could customers
have access to all
of this information 24/7.
We want to raise the bar
for our industry,” added
Nooner.
Through the customer
portal, homeowners can
easily share the pictures
and progress of their
home with friends and
family via e-mail and integrated
links to social
media. They can also
schedule to see
what is happening next
in the building of their
independent, carefree lifestyle,
who want to live in close
proximity to their children
and grandchildren. These
buyers tend to spend a couple
months of the year in warmer
climates and don’t want to
be concerned with home
upkeep while they are away.
At SkyHarbor Townhomes a
homeowner’s association takes
care of lawn maintenance and
snow removal for residents.
Additionally, SkyHarbor is
a good fit for many young
families as well. Just a few
minutes from several commuter
train stations and major
highways, the location of
this property makes it easy to
commute to work. The idea of
living in a community with a
maintenance free lifestyle gives
today’s buyer the freedom to
travel and recreate without the
time burden of home upkeep.
SkyHarbor Townhomes is
a small enclave community
with an on-site lake and is
adjacent to single family
homes. Townhomes range in
size from two to four bedrooms
with 1,800 to 2,600 square feet
of living space in three and
four-unit buildings. All homes
include a full basement and
luxury appointments such
as granite counter tops and
custom maple cabinets.
SkyHarbor Townhome
exteriors are architecturally
refined and feature Craftsman
style designs in brick and
stone construction on the
first floor. Tapered columns,
stone accents, bracketing
on gables and bracket detail
on garage doors are some
of the thoughtful features
Distinctive Home Builders has
incorporated into the design.
Distinctive Home Builders
has built thousands of singlefamily
homes throughout
the South and Southwest
suburbs over the past 30 years,
and is dedicated to giving
its customers the best home
buying experience.
Top-notch home creation
with zero punch list items is an
expectation Distinctive delivers
to its homeowners. The builder
performs numerous quality
control checks throughout the
building process and adheres
to a nearly 1,500-point formal
checklist that project managers
certify. Before closing, each
home undergoes an industryleading
checklist that ensures
each home measures up to the
firm’s high quality standards.
“Having measurable, identifiable
standards that our
craftsmen are expected to
Nooner said.
Communication is key to
maintaining an overall positive
experience during the construction
process. Therefore,
all Distinctive customers have
the Project Manager’s e-mail
address and cell phone
number, as well as access to
the secure online portal where
pictures and logs chronicle the
continued progress on their
home. Customers have access
to the online portal through the
Distinctive Homebuilders App
that can be easily downloaded
to any smartphone or tablet.
“Our customers simply download
our app and they are in
touch with their new home
24/7 from anywhere in the
world. The app allows our
customers to see the progress
of their home and access
their documents at any time”
Nooner explained. “Our customers
really appreciate the
integration of social media
sites within the app allowing
them to easily share photos
and updates of their new
home with family and friends,”
he concluded.
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient with
upgraded wall and ceiling
insulation, energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Why Pay Rent?
Immediate Occupancy Homes available now from the mid $200’s
Distinctive Home Builders Presents Quality Built Affordable Homes at Cedar Creek in Joliet
Distinctive Home Builders
recently began preconstruction
sales at
Cedar Creek in Joliet.
Homeowners there will
enjoy competitively priced
quality built homes and
low Joliet taxes from
one of the area’s leading
home builders. Cedar
Creek is located on Millsdale
Road, one half mile
west of Rt. 53 and south
of Laraway Road. Our
model home visitor center
is open for viewing.
“Handcrafted semi-custom
homes are unheard
of in the area in this price
range,” said Bryan Nooner,
president of Frankfortbased
Distinctive Home
Builders. “These homes
provide a great value and
in many cases will be less
than paying rent. This
opens up home ownership
opportunities to those
who were locked out of
the market previously. Although
construction is underway,
pre-construction
savings are still available.”
Affordable, conveniently
located ranch and twostory
homes feature floor
plans ranging from 1,500
to 3,000 square feet in
size with two to four bedrooms
and front elevation
brick exteriors with the
option to add stone accents.
Prices start from
the mid $200’s and some
home sites back up to Cedar
Creek Park. We have
four immediate occupancy
homes available at our
Cedar Creek community -
3 ranch homes and a twostory
home.
“These homes appeal
to two markets: Empty
nesters that are downsizing
with our ranches and
an outstanding value for
first time homebuyers and
families wanting the most
space for their money,”
added Nooner.
Cedar Creek school
children attend Elwood
School District 203 for K –
8 and high school age children
attend Joliet Township
Central High School
within District 204, which
was recently named the
College Board’s Advanced
Placement District of the
Year. Saint Joseph Academy
is also nearby.
“We have closed the gap
of getting what you want
and getting what you
need in a new home significantly
by including additional
features that our
buyers told us were most
important to them,” said
Nooner. “Now is the best
time to buy, because you
can still take advantage
of preconstruction prices
that range from the mid
$200s which makes this a
terrific new home value.”
Bryan Nooner, president
of Distinctive Home
Builders, has built thousands
of single-family
homes throughout the
south and southwest suburbs
over the past 30
years. Distinctive Home
Builders is dedicated to
giving their customers the
best home buying experience.
A home delivery with
zero punch list items is an
expectation Distinctive
has for its homeowners.
Before closing, each home
undergoes an industryleading
checklist that ensures
each home measures
up to the firm’s high quality
standards. Distinctive
performs numerous quality
control checks throughout
the building process
and adheres to a nearly
1,500 point formal checklist
that project managers
certify.
“Having a set of measurable,
identifiable standards
that our craftsmen
are expected to maintain
is critical to upholding
high quality standards
and ensures delivering a
Zero Defect Home to our
homeowners,” according
to Distinctive president,
Bryan Nooner.
During the construction
process, there are prescheduled
times set for
site visitations at various
landmark stages of construction.
Communication
is an important aspect
to maintaining an overall
positive experience during
the construction process.
Therefore, all Distinctive
customers have the Project
Manager’s e-mail address
and cell phone number,
as well as, access to the
secure online customer
portal where pictures and
logs show the continued
progress on their home.
Customers have access to
the online portal through
the Distinctive Homebuilders
App that can be
easily downloaded to any
smartphone or tablet.
“Our customers simply
download our Distinctive
Home Builders app and
they are in touch with their
new home 24/7 from anywhere
in the world. The
app allows our customers
to see the progress of their
home and access all their
documents at any time”
Nooner explained. “Our
customers really appreciate
the integration of social
media sites within the
app allowing them to easily
share photos and updates
of their new home
with family and friends,”
he concluded.
Nooner added that all
homes are highly energy
efficient. Every home built
will have upgraded wall
and ceiling insulation values
with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before
homeowners move into
their new home, Distinctive
Home Builders conducts
a blower door test
that pressurizes the home
to ensure that each home
passes a set of very stringent
Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
Cedar Creek is served by
major thoroughfares such
as IL Rte. 53, I-55 and
10 Questions
with Ava Gugliuzza
Ava Gugliuzza is a freshman
guard on the Lincoln-
Way West girls basketball
team.
How long have you
played basketball and
how did you first get
started?
I’ve been playing since
I was 4 years old in park
district ball. I started with
travel ball when I was in
second grade and I was
playing on a fourth-grade
team.
You are now
teammates with your
older sisters, Taylor
and Tara. How big
of an impact has
basketball had on your
family?
It’s brought us together
so much. I don’t know
what we would do without
it. We’re in the gym almost
every single day. We’ve
bonded through basketball.
It’s helped make us
really close as sisters and
as a family.
How have you been
able to come in as a
freshman, play in so
many big games, and
seemingly never be
intimidated?
If you’re nervous, it’s
just going to psych you out
before the game. You just
have to act like you’re not
nervous until you’re there
and then you just push
22nd Century Media file
photo
through.
Your team has made
so much history this
year, making it to
state for the first
time. What has it been
like to be a part of it?
It’s unbelievable. For
me to come in as a freshman
and go to state, it’s
amazing. It’s been such a
fun year and I’m just excited
I got to be a part of
this team.
Did you feel like you
could come in as a
freshman and help
West get this far?
Yeah, we’ve been excited
for this year for a long
time. We knew it would be
our best chance to have a
great season, and we’ve
done it.
What makes this team
3
so special?
How well we work together.
Even if one of us
is not having a good game,
someone else steps up no
matter what. In the big
games, we all pull through
and help each other.
What makes you a
special player?
I feel like my shot does.
I have been practicing
shooting most of my life,
and I feel like the hard
work has paid off.
If you could be
anybody else for a
day, who would you
want to be?
Probably Steph Curry.
He’s one of the best basketball
players in the
world and it would be fun
to be him.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would
you want to go?
Probably Iceland. It
looks really pretty, and I
really want to go to there
one day.
If you could be any
superhero, which
would you want to
be?
I don’t even know. I
think Spider-man. He
climbs walls and that
seems really cool.
Interview conducted by
Sports Editor Steve Millar.
Roundup
Providence’s Spencer has historic pole vault
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Sam Spencer is the defending
state champion
in the pole vault, and the
Providence senior continues
to push herself higher
and higher in the event.
At the Joliet Central
Steelmen Shuffle on
Thursday, March 5, she
went higher than any high
school girl ever has in Illinois.
Spencer’s vault of 4.1
meters, or 13.55 feet,
topped the previous state
record of 13.5. It’s the
fourth-highest vault in the
country this year.
“She said she was warming
up pretty good and she
felt good,” Providence
coach Tom Lenahan said.
“The event went really
long, though. We had the
most pole vaulters we’ve
ever had at this event and
it went about three hours.
“Sometimes, the girls
lose focus when it goes
that long and they have to
wait for a long time. She
obviously had her focus,
though.”
Spencer’s ability to record
such an impressive
vault early in the indoor
season gives the Celtics
reason to be very excited
about what she can do going
forward.
“This was in spikes on
an indoor track, where it’s
hot and stuffy,” Lenahan
said. “For her to start off
this strong in those conditions,
it’s scary to think
about what she could do in
the outdoor season.”
Area boys basketball
teams drop playoff
openers
Lincoln-Way Central’s
boys basketball team won
its first SouthWest Suburban
Red title and won
the most games of any
Knights team since there
was only one Lincoln-Way
High School.
Still, that success does
not feel nearly as good
without a postseason run at
the end of it, and no one in
a Central jersey was prepared
for the season to end
as abruptly as it did.
Plainfield Central, seeded
11th in the Class 4A
Lockport Sectional, upset
the sixth-seeded Knights
58-44 in a West Aurora
Regional semifinal March
3.
The Knights (23-9) saw
potential for a big run, especially
after third-seeded
Waubonsie Valley was upset
by 14th-seeded West
Aurora in the first semifinal.
Instead, it was one and
done.
“We just seemed rusty,”
Central coach Bob Curran
said. “Our last three
games, we didn’t play
great. I thought that was
more mental, though. I
think we were a little tired
then.
“But I really felt like
we had a great week of
practice coming into this.
I don’t know if the whole
week off hurt us, but we
were just missing free
throws and layups.”
Junior guard Sean Curran
led the Knights with 20
points, including 18 in the
second half, and nine rebounds.
Junior guard Nick
Tingley added 15 points,
14 in the first half.
Lincoln-Way West’s
season ended with a 52-
32 loss to Joliet Central in
a Class 4A Lincoln-Way
West Regional quarterfinal
March 2.
West ends the season
with a 3-26 record and 1-7
in conference play.
The Warriors went into
halftime with a one-point
lead, 18-17, but couldn’t
close it out as the game
started to get away from
them in the second half.
Junior guard Jacob Vassalla
led the way for the
Warriors with 11 points
and three assists. Sophomore
forward Quentin Villa
added nine points, while
senior forward Andrew
Pyles had six points and
five rebounds in his final
game with West.
“I have a feeling that
with a couple of these guys,
if they put in the time and
work on their bodies and
athleticism, they’ll be able
to help next year,” West
coach Brian Flaherty said.
“And we’ll be a much-improved
team.”
Providence (12-19) fell
47-40 to Rich East in a
Class 3A Kankakee Regional
semifinal.
Providence hockey falls in
quarterfinals
Providence Catholic’s
hockey season ended with
a 2-1 loss to Barrington in
an AHAI state quarterfinal
March 4 at the Edge Ice
Arena in Bensenville.
Senior defenseman
Tom Zschach scored for
the Celtics (43-14-1), and
sophomore goaltender
Luke Brzezinski recorded
37 saves.
LW West falls just short in state championship game
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
5
Taylor Gugliuzza wiped away
the tears and thought back on all
the history she and her Lincoln-
Way West teammates had made
this season.
The program’s first sectional
title, first trip to state and first
state championship game. There
was just one first missing, and it
was the one the Warriors wanted
most: the first state title.
Fremd instead won its first
state championship, holding
West to a season-low in points
and pulling off a 58-47 victory in
the Class 4A state championship
game Saturday, March 7, at Redbird
Arena
“I expected more from myself,”
said Gugliuzza, a senior.
“I feel like I could have played
so much better and I let the team
down with how I played. That’s
definitely not how I normally
play, and I’m pretty upset about
it.
“But just the fact that we were
all able to experience this, [people]
rarely get to do this. It’s a
once in a lifetime opportunity,
and I couldn’t be more proud of
our entire effort and play.”
Junior guard Tara Gugliuzza
led the Warriors (32-4) with 16
points and six rebounds. Taylor
Gugliuzza added 15 points.
Alabama-Birmingham recruit
Emily Klaczek paced Fremd
(30-7) with 20 points and nine
rebounds.
The Vikings used their size
and length to slow down the
high-flying Warriors offense,
while West also had plenty of
missed layups and open 3-pointers
to look back on and wonder
what if.
The Warriors shot just 30 percent
from the field (13-of-43).
“I don’t know if nerves got to
us or what was going on,” Tara
Gugliuzza said. “We usually
make our layups.”
Fremd and West came into
the championship game with
Lincoln-Way West’s Taylor Gugliuzza waves to the fans after
receiving her second-place medal after the Warriors’ loss to Fremd
in the Class 4A state championship game.
differing styles. While the Warriors
topped the 70-point mark
15 times, the Vikings did so just
four times and typically won
grind-it-out, defensive games.
The final certainly played
more to Fremd’s style.
“Long, athletic kids coming at
you as you’re going to the basket
can cause some problems,
and they have that,” West coach
Ryan White said. “Those are the
types of kids who have given us
some problems in the past.
“Forty-seven points for us is
pretty low, so they did a good job
on that end of the floor. We tried
to make it more of a scramble
game at times, but they’re hard to
turn over. Their guards are good.
They have big kids to throw it
up when they’re in trouble. They
did a good job controlling it.”
West led 13-8 after one quarter
and 21-15 with just over a
minute left in the first half, but
Fremd hit three 3-pointers over
the final 70 seconds of the half,
two by 3-point contest state
champion Ella Burns, and pulled
level at 24-24 at halftime.
“That stretch at the end of the
first half was a killer,” White
said. “That was a backbreaker,
because we could have went
in with the lead and felt pretty
good, but instead we went in
tied.”
West led just once in the second
half, when Taylor Gugliuzza’s
free throw made it 35-34
with 1:56 left in the third quarter.
Taylor Gugliuzza’s first made
3-pointer of the night gave her
team one last bit of hope, pulling
the Warriors within 44-41 with
2:59 to go.
Fremd, though, scored the next
seven points to take command.
Sophomore forward Bri
Wooldridge, who played for
Fremd last season before transferring,
five rebounds against her former
“I’m going to remember the
amazing season that we had,”
Tara Gugliuzza said. “It was a
great season. We got second, but
that’s still amazing. Not many
teams can say they got second in
the state.”
Taylor Gugliuzza is set to continue
her career at Lewis, while
Sydney Swanberg and Molly
Ryan will also be big losses as
multi-year varsity players, and
Lindsey O’Donnell, Elizabeth
Atsinger and Grace Hafner will
depart as well.
The rest of the team is expected
to return, though, and the
Warriors are optimistic they can
make it back.
“This is going to motivate us,”
Wooldridge said. “I think this
experience is going to push us to
want even greater things to happen
next year. It’s going to take
us a while, because we’re young,
but I think we can do it.”

Girls Basketball
Defending champ Morton ends
Providence’s best season ever
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
The Providence girls
basketball team had embraced
the saying, “We
didn’t come this far just to
come this far!”
In the end, the Celtics
went further than any other
team in program history.
But, they fell just short of a
trip to state.
That’s because the Celtics
ran into the juggernaut
that is Morton.
The defending Class 3A
state champions cruised to
a 45-12 victory over Providence
on March 2 in the
Class 3A Kankakee Supersectional.
The loss ended the best
season in Celtics girls
basketball history. They
finished 27-9, easily establishing
a new school record
for victories - 21 in 1996-
97 was the old mark - and
winning their first sectional
title in the process.
“I couldn’t be more
proud of my young ladies
this entire year, accomplishing
something that’s
never been done at our
school,” Providence coach
Eileen Copenhaver said.
“I’m just trying to embrace
the entirety of it all. We ran
into a powerhouse team in
every sense of the word.”
Providence senior guard
Lauren Knight, who led the
team with four points, also
won’t ever forget that her
team got this far.
“Once I get over being
sad, I’m still so proud of
how far we’ve come and
what we accomplished,”
Knight said. “We broke
our school record of wins.
No one’s won a sectional at
our school before. I’m just
so proud of how far we’ve
come and how much we’ve
grown.”
On the other side, the
undefeated Potters (36-0)
advanced to the state finals
for the sixth time in the
past eight years. They were
bidding for their fifth state
championship in the past
six seasons and the 36 wins
is already a school record.
“That was the best team
we’ve played,” Providence
junior Ashley Raymer said.
“It was terrible sitting on
the bench [after picking up
her third foul early in the
second quarter] and not being
able to help my teammates.
We had prepared so
much for [the Potters] but
everyone was getting frustrated,
because we can’t
really prepare for that pressure
defense.”
Morton forced the Celtics
into 28 turnovers and
5-of-27 (19 percent) shooting
from the field.
After Morton jumped
out to a 7-0 lead, Raymer
rained in a 3-pointer to get
the Celtics on the board.
Knight had a nice driving
layup and freshman
guard Annalise Pietrzyk hit
7
a short shot in the lane as
Providence closed within
three points at the end of
the opening quarter.
Providence trailed just
12-8 midway through the
second quarter and, if the
Celtics could get something
going maybe it could
hang in there with the top
team.
Instead, Morton went on
an 11-0 run to take a 23-8
halftime lead.
The season is what the
Celtics will remember, not
the last game.
“I still watch the videos
of us winning the sectional
and regional,” Knight said.
“I’m never going to forget
it.”
Five seniors - Knight,
Rost, Claire McGrath, Reagan
Tokoly and Spreitzer
graduate. But Pietrzyk and
Raymer were starters that
are expected back and there
were six sophomores on
this season’s squad.
“I want to bring them
back to this point,” Raymer
said of the Celtics next season.
“The last two weeks
have been the most fun
time. I want to come back
and experience it again.”
THREE notes on
the LW West girls
basketball season
1. Senior star
Lewis recruit Taylor
Gugliuzza (above)
became the first
player in program
history to top 2,000
career points and
was named firstteam
All-State.
2. Newcomers
emerge
The additions of
freshman guard
Ava Gugliuzza and
sophomore forward
Bri Wooldridge,
a transfer from
Fremd, were huge
in getting West to
the next level.
3. Bright future
With Tara and
Ava Gugliuzza,
and Wooldridge
expected to
return as starters,
plus other key
pieces back, the
Warriors should be
contenders again
next season.
STEVE MILLAR, Sports Editor
Lincoln-Way West’s historic
girls basketball season did not
have the fairytale ending that the
fans in black and orange who
packed Redbird Arena in Normal
were hoping for.
But what a ride it was.
Yes, it was Fremd that came to
Normal – West’s second home in
the postseason - and left with its
first state championship.
For three weeks, though, the
Warriors were the Queens of
McLean County.
West played five of its postseason
games in Bloomington-
Normal, winning regional and
supersectional titles within that
metroplex.
The Warriors’ other two playoff
games were in Pekin, which became
the site of the first sectional
championship in program history.
That is in Tazewell County, for
those using this as an opportunity
to brush up on your Central
Illinois geography. Speaking of
which, be sure to check out our
map on Page 37.
In the old days, it was common
for pro and college sports team to
travel the country on “barnstorming”
tours to give out-of-town fans
a chance to see them play.
Well, this was the Illinois high
school basketball equivalent of a
barnstorming tour, and the Warriors
put on quite a show.
The Warriors’ powerful offense
was on full display – they topped
the 70-point mark in each of their
first four playoff games – as the
Gugliuzza sisters, Bri Wooldridge,
Sydney Swanberg and the rest of
the West squad left their mark all
over school record books.
While upsets were happening
The Class 4A state runner-up Lincoln-Way West girls basketball team
shows off its trophies at a rally held at the school Sunday, March 8.
STEVE MILLAR/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
across the state, West fought off
all challengers on its way to the
Final Four.
The Warriors rallied from an
early eight-point deficit to pull
away from an upset-minded Normal
West team playing in its
hometown, winning the Normal
Community Regional championship.
They rolled through the sectional,
winning by 37 in the semifinal
against Joliet West and leading by
more than 20 in the final against
O’Fallon before finishing off a 79-
67 victory.
They ran into two South-
West Suburban Conference foes
in Homewood-Flossmoor and
Bolingbrook – the league’s two
perennial powers – and took care
of both in the supersectional and
state semifinal.
The Warriors had a knack for
fighting back immediately any
time it seemed an opponent was
set to take control.
With a senior first team All-
State performer in Taylor Gugliuzza
leading the way, it’s easy to
forget that West had a young team,
with a freshman in Ava Gugliuzza
and a sophomore in Wooldridge
in the starting lineup, and another
sophomore in Evan Pittman playing
a key role off the bench.
That youth made the team’s
ability to keep its composure especially
impressive.
It was evident again in the state
championship game. The first six
times Fremd took a lead, the Warriors
fought right back to tie it or
take the lead before the Vikings
could stretch their edge beyond
two points.
In the end, though, West ran out
of answers.
The shots that went in for the
Warriors all season simply did not
fall when it mattered most, and a
season with so much excitement
ended with tears.
When the pain begins to wear
off, though, there will be so many
good memories to look back on.
That was part of the message
coach Ryan White gave his players,
and particularly his seniors,
when the final buzzer sounded,
and it was the Vikings doing the
celebrating.
“I tried to tell them, ‘You guys
did this. Look at the community
that came out and supported
you,’” White said. “It’s been a
three-to-four year process to get
here, and they’ve been the main
cogs in it. They have a lot to be
proud of and I think they will be
once it all settles in.”
This was a team that instilled
pride in its school and community.
That was on display throughout
the playoffs, as West fans invaded
gyms more than 100 miles away.
It was certainly evident at state,
as the West Side student section
packed Redbird Arena with what
longtime state finals TV play-byplay
announcer Dave Bernhard
said was the biggest student section
he had ever seen at the event.
And it was on display again
Sunday, March 8, at the parade
and rally held for the team.
There, West principal Monica
Schmitt left the Warriors players
with an appropriate message.
“We’re beaming with pride,”
she said. “Thanks for putting Lincoln-Way
West girls basketball on
the map.”
The Warriors certainly did that,
and they went all over the map to
do it.
LISTEN UP
season. We got second, but that’s still amazing.”
