Regardless of whether your home is 10 years old or 100 years old, chances are it was built for the now and not the future. The longer you live in a house, the more it becomes home. A recent survey by Houzz found that more than half of homeowners 60 and older plan to stay in their home indefinitely. HomeAdvisor also recently released its “Aging in Place Survey Report,” which reveals that it’s not just the aging homeowners making lifestyle renovations – the trend is also filtering down to futurethinking homeowners who are purchasing aging-inplace-ready homes or making the renovations earlier in the aging process. Home remodelers are seeing huge growth in renovations with a specific focus: making kitchens and bathrooms more accessible to give your house long-term livability. About 76 percent of living-inplace projects include adding grab bars. Typically added to bathroom shower/tub and toilet areas, they are equally important in other places such as bedrooms or near stepped entryways (for example from the attached garage into the house) to assist in stabilization or standing up. Here are some other examples of bathroom and kitchen renovations that are helpful for “Living in Place”: • Multiple light sources to help reduce glare and shadows. • Slip-resistant flooring material, including flat, non-slip bottoms in the bathtub. • Showerheads on a slide bar to easily adjust the height of the spray depending on the user’s needs and assist in cleaning. • Showers and faucets controlled by levers, rather than knobs. • Showers with pressurebalanced or thermostatic controls to reduce the risk of burns. • Comfort-height toilets (which are seventeen to nineteen inches off the ground) to make sitting and standing easier. • Bathroom and kitchen faucets featuring touchand hands-free activation. • Seats in the shower - often associated with luxury bathrooms! • Install pull-out drawers in kitchen and bathroom cabinets. • A kitchen sink that is not too deep, to reduce stress on the back from over-bending. • Doorknobs and cabinet knobs changed to leverstyle handles that are easier to open with limited dexterity (or even a bag of groceries or a child in tow). • Smart devices/voice activated devices including: thermostats, security systems, lights, fire protection, shades/blinds, locks, etc. The good news is the same design features that make a home comfortable for older people also work for younger families. The potential challenge is that functionality sometimes comes with a more commercial or industrial look. However, as the trend continues, homeowners will have an increasing amount of options for designs that are safe with functionality, and also attractive.
