These types of situations 

were the driving force behind 

the creation of Resources 

for Intelligent Aging, 

(RIA). 

“We believed it would 

be helpful to organize a 

group of professionals 

who could assist seniors 

and their families every 

step of the way,” said Ann 

Ayres, of Ayres Estate Services. 

She and her business 

partner and sister Doris are 

RIA co-founders. 

Doris Ayres adds, “our 

focus is understanding individuals’ 

needs and preferences 

as they go through 

life’s transitions.” 

RIA’s goal is to provide 

trusted and accessible resources 

in all areas to help 

older adults age in place. 

In addition, the group 

supports the ‘Sandwich’ 

Generation who are often 

caring for senior parents 

and children at the same 

time. RIA includes business 

owners and professionals 

who are developing 

useful and interactive 

ways to serve seniors and 

their families in our community. 

In many cases, the 

focus is on comprehensive 

life care plans that range 

from financial planning to 

home safety. 

“As professionals serving 

this demographic, we 

know that when someone 

needs one service, they 

probably need many other 

services as well,” said senior

Center is headquartered in 

Northfield and serves and 

engages more than 23,000 

older adults and their families 

each year throughout 

Chicago’s northern suburbs. 

The Center is nationally-accredited 

and offers 

a comprehensive suite of 

services, including a wide 

array of social services, 

programs for people living 

with dementia, private care 

management, educational 

and wellness programs, and

“Our continuum of services

Thousands of North

the Center to participate 

in Lifelong Learning programs

studio and variety of clubs 

attract those seeking friendships 

and outlets to express

selection of fitness and 

wellness programs include 

a mix of strength and balance 

classes, yoga, tai chi, 

and outdoor adventures

Fitness specialists offer

For families caring for 

someone with memory 

loss, the Center’s House 

of Welcome (HOW) Adult 

Day Services provides specialized 

therapeutic care 

for people living with Alzheimer’s 

disease and other 

dementias. HOW offers a 

structured, therapeutic Day 

Program; a program for 

those with early memory 

loss; and an Alzheimer’s 

family support group. 

HOW’s monthly Memory 

Café provides an opportunity 

for people with memory 

loss and their caregivers 

to steal away for a few 

hours of fun in a safe and 

supportive environment. 

Senior and Family Services 

partners with older 

adults and their families to 

help them access valuable 

community programs and 

services including benefits 

counseling, general case 

management, home-delivered 

meals, housekeeping 

services and many other resources. 

Its Lending Closet 

in Northfield and Glenview 

allows people of all ages 

to borrow durable medical 

equipment such as walkers, 

canes, wheelchairs and 

shower chairs. The Center 

also holds support groups 

for people living with Parkinson’s

caregiver support groups

My story began in 

Youngstown, Ohio, June 

27, 1963. I will not bore 

you with the details of my 

childhood but it is important 

to know that I am No. 

9 of 10 children. 

Being near the end of the 

birth order had its perks 

but also led to a sense that 

nobody was really too 

worried about what No. 9 

was feeling or thinking. 

Flash forward to the 

middle of my story, I 

graduated from Ohio State 

University in 1996 with a 

B.S. in Occupational Therapy 

and obtained a MAT 

in Education at National 

Louis in 2011. I worked as 

an occupational therapist 

for decades and participated 

in caring for my mother 

and both of my in-laws at 

the end of their lives. 

Eventually, my father 

would also need help as 

he neared the end of his 

life. My father was a lovable 

but challenging man. 

I witnessed the strain the 

situation and his difficult 

behavior had on my family, 

saw the flaws in our 

health care system, and 

experienced my own stress 

and anxiety with adjusting 

to a new role in my family. 

While my siblings managed 

everything else for 

my father, No. 9 was primarily 

relied upon to make 

complex health care decisions, 

advocate on behalf 

of my father, initiate difficult 

conversations and get 

hospice on board. 

I often wondered how 

other families managed 

these enormous challenges 

if nobody worked in 

healthcare. Consequently, 

after my father died in 

hospice, I was inspired to 

pursue a doctorate degree 

in Occupational Therapy 

at St. Catherine University 

and establish Heart2Heart 

Coaching & Consulting 

(H2H). 

H2H inspires adults of 

all ages to live their “best 

life”. Whether it be the 

older adults or the adult 

children who are in need 

of guidance, H2H can help 

you to examine the emotional 

patterns that determine 

daily routines and 

habits and make changes 

that can lead to improved 

quality of life. 

Other key components 

provided by H2H include 

making sure the home 

environment is safe, education 

for informed decision 

making, managing 

changing family dynamics 

and preparing for medical 

emergencies in advance. 

Why not try to reduce the 

stress that comes with the 

inevitable? Our current 

health care system is set 

up to help people after a 

crisis or medical decline, 

instead of before. Why not 

join H2H in a proactive 

approach to aging? Why 

not contribute to the narrative 

so the ending of your

and tranquil one? H2H 

is there at any point in the 

process but the earlier we 

get started, the bigger the 

impact on how gracefully 

we age, giving us more options 

of where and how we 

do it.

Ayres Estate Services 

assists clients in the 

hard task of dispersing 

Ann and Doris Ayres established 

Ayres Estate Services 

in 2010 as a complement to 

their core businesses, art 

consultation and interior 

design, respectively. They 

work with their clients to sell 

with good return on varied 

and desirable items that are 

no longer useful to them. 

An organizer we know 

was working with a client 

selling a three-story Victorian 

Graystone in Lincoln 

Park. Being travelers 

and collectors, the owners 

had filled their large house 

with period pieces and artifacts 

from exotic cultures. 

The organizer called us in 

to help achieve a cleaner, 

more contemporary feel 

to the many expansive 

rooms. 

Our first step was to 

contact a design shop owner 

who specializes in artistic 

and unusual decorative 

items. We also brought in 

an antiques dealer who 

specializes in late 19th 

century carved furniture 

and accessories. Finally, 

we invited a specialist in 

mid-century and primitive 

styles who bought several 

African masks and native 

pottery. We have worked 

with these resource folks 

for years, know what they 

like to buy, and invite them 

to make house calls for 

purchases. They depend 

on us for our expertise in 

recognizing great stuff as 

much as we depend on 

them to buy from our clients. 

One of the interesting 

collections in this project 

was a large number of 

American pottery from the 

1930s through the 1960s. 

Buyers like groups of 

things — variations on a 

theme. All 75 pieces in this 

collection were sold to one 

person after some friendly 

negotiation. 

When the property was 

listed there were small uncommitted 

pieces left over. 

We boxed them up, and 

took them to a shop that 

admittedly pays bare minimum. 

The client agreed: 

a little cash is better than 

none at all. 

We were able to help this 

client in specific ways. We 

brought to the client our 

insiders’ access to businesspeople 

who are serious 

about enhancing their 

stores and shops. Because 

the pieces for sale included 

a variety of items, we had 

the resources to include 

specialty buyers. Knowing 

the appeal of the lots 

for sale, we were able to 

coax the best return from 

each purchase. Even the 

leftovers didn’t become 

landfill but sold to please 

someone for a few more 

dollars. 

The Ayres sisters, Ann and 

Doris, have been helping 

clients to disperse their 

unwanted items for years 

with their vast network of 

collectors, antiques dealers, 

special consignment 

venues, auction houses and 

house sale specialists. Give

old, chances are it was 

built for the now and not

The longer you live in a 

house, the more it becomes 

home. A recent survey by 

Houzz found that more 

than half of homeowners 

60 and older plan to stay in 

their home indefinitely. 

HomeAdvisor also recently 

released its “Aging 

in Place Survey Report,” 

which reveals that it’s not 

just the aging homeowners

– the trend is also 

filtering down to futurethinking 

homeowners who 

are purchasing aging-inplace-ready 

homes or making 

the renovations earlier 

in the aging process. 

Home remodelers are 

seeing huge growth in 

renovations with a specific 

focus: making kitchens 

and bathrooms more accessible 

to give your house 

long-term livability. About 

76 percent of living-inplace 

projects include adding 

grab bars. Typically 

added to bathroom shower/tub 

and toilet areas, they 

are equally important in 

other places such as bedrooms 

or near stepped entryways 

(for example from 

the attached garage into 

the house) to assist in stabilization 

or standing up. 

Here are some other examples

kitchen renovations that

Chestnut Square at the Glen 

brothers share a remarkable bond 

For eight decades, brothers Don and 

Bob Klein have been a dynamic duo. 

Growing up on Chicago’s north side, they 

shared the same group of friends, and as 

adults, the two worked together at the 

same bank where Don served as president 

and Bob was vice president and treasurer. 

It should come as no surprise, then, 

that they would eventually end up at the 

same senior living community. “Moving to 

Chestnut Square was one of the best decisions 

my wife and I ever made,” Don said. 

“Mary Jane and I were always telling Bob 

how much he would enjoy living here.” 

When Bob’s wife, Shirley, passed away 

in 2013, he began touring different retirement

said. “My granddaughter joined me on
