Resources for Intelligent Aging – with you every step of the way
Helping older
adults age in place
– or helping them
find the best home
away from home
When seniors are diagnosed
with dementia or
other debilitating illnesses,
suddenly their loved ones
are thrust into a position of
having to make many difficult
decisions in a short
period of time. Or in some
cases, adult children find
that their elderly parents
with chronic health conditions
simply are not managing
well at home.
“Most of the time, ‘accidental
caregivers’ like
these are not prepared
when events occur,” said
Charlotte Bishop, of Creative
Care Management.
“They need expert advice,
and fast.”
These types of situations
were the driving force behind
the creation of Resources
for Intelligent Aging,
(RIA).
“We believed it would
be helpful to organize a
group of professionals
who could assist seniors
and their families every
step of the way,” said Ann
Ayres, of Ayres Estate Services.
She and her business
partner and sister Doris are
RIA co-founders.
Doris Ayres adds, “our
focus is understanding individuals’
needs and preferences
as they go through
life’s transitions.”
RIA’s goal is to provide
trusted and accessible resources
in all areas to help
older adults age in place.
In addition, the group
supports the ‘Sandwich’
Generation who are often
caring for senior parents
and children at the same
time. RIA includes business
owners and professionals
who are developing
useful and interactive
ways to serve seniors and
their families in our community.
In many cases, the
focus is on comprehensive
life care plans that range
from financial planning to
home safety.
“As professionals serving
this demographic, we
know that when someone
needs one service, they
probably need many other
services as well,” said senior
home repair expert
Darryl Rose, of Get Dwell.
As a Realtor, Merry
Juell often has homeowners
asking for other professional
services.
“Through our networking,
I feel confident referring
a care management
professional, several home
care agencies, an estate attorney,
an estate services
NOT all Hemp and CBD products are alike
company to help with
downsizing, a personal
trainer to preserve my clients’
health, and a memory
care facility if necessary.”
One way RIA members
help seniors and their
families prepare for the future
is through complimentary
presentations to
community groups, senior
centers, libraries, houses
of worship, physicians,
and more.
For example, participants
such as attorney
Charles E. Hutchinson
discuss the importance of
estate planning or Alice
Chow, MS, RPh, CLTC,
LTCP educates on Medicare
and Supplemental
Plans as well as Long-term
Care. In addition, Lydia
Morrissey, of Morrissey
Client Advocates, shares
daily money and household
management tips.
“When a senior wants
to remain in his/her home,
there are many logistics
for loved ones to consider,
she explains. “Is the home
safe? Does it need repairs
or adaptations? Or who
is going to manage the
home?” Lydia also helps
clients assess caregiving
and healthcare needs.
“When it is not possible
for a senior to remain
in his/her home, a
whole new set of questions
arise,” says Senior Move
Manager Drina Nikola of
Dwelling Spaces & Places.
“How do we go about selling
the house? Do we need
to fix it up first? Which
care facility is best for our
loved one?
As client care director
for Home Care Assistance,
Nancy Hopkins said, “In
the field, I often have clients
ask about many of the
services that would assist
them to achieve the highest
quality of life at home. By
directing them to the Wilmette/Kenilworth
Chamber
of Commerce website,
wilmettekenilworth.com,
and RIA website, intelligent-aging.net/,
every resource
is in one place.”
RIA meets monthly to
share information, discuss
industry trends, learn more
about each other’s services,
and consider ways we
can better serve residents
on the North Shore. For
The Endoscopy Center of the North
Shore offers personalized attention,
high-quality service
Dr. Manoj Mehta has
been caring for residents of
the North Shore for over 20
years.
He brings personalized
attention and high-quality
service to the heart of downtown
Wilmette. Dr. Mehta
has developed a reputation
as a caring physician who is
deeply invested in the overall
well-being of his patients.
In an era when patients often
become “just a number”,
lost in the shuffle, and whose
questions are answered by a
call center, Dr. Mehta makes
every effort to be personally
connected to each patient.
Dr. Mehta’s philosophy is to
work closely with patients to
approach their medical issues
as a team, arriving at decisions
together.
The Endoscopy Center
of the North Shore was created
to provide one-on-one,
personalized, attentive, and
cost-effective care compared
to that available in a hospital
setting. Patients can park
right in front, walk in and out,
and don’t have to deal with
the bureaucracy or exposure
to illnesses found in the hospital
environment. There is a
full-time anesthesiologist for
maximal comfort and safety,
the center is fully accredited
(unlike other non-hospital
practices), and the same quality
standards are maintained
as in the hospital environment.
The center maintains
the ASGE’s coveted Quality
Star designation.
The office is located at 1100
Central Avenue, Suite H, in
Wilmette. Park behind Depot
HEART2HEART COACHING & CONSULTING
We all have a story
Making your home SAFER
doesn’t mean a compromise
on STYLE.
Call Bratschi Plumbing to learn
how to upgrade your home
to meet your needs.
Lic. 055-004618
My story began in
Youngstown, Ohio, June
27, 1963. I will not bore
you with the details of my
childhood but it is important
to know that I am No.
9 of 10 children.
Being near the end of the
birth order had its perks
but also led to a sense that
nobody was really too
worried about what No. 9
was feeling or thinking.
Flash forward to the
middle of my story, I
graduated from Ohio State
University in 1996 with a
B.S. in Occupational Therapy
and obtained a MAT
in Education at National
Louis in 2011. I worked as
an occupational therapist
for decades and participated
in caring for my mother
and both of my in-laws at
the end of their lives.
Eventually, my father
would also need help as
he neared the end of his
life. My father was a lovable
but challenging man.
I witnessed the strain the
situation and his difficult
behavior had on my family,
saw the flaws in our
health care system, and
experienced my own stress
and anxiety with adjusting
to a new role in my family.
While my siblings managed
everything else for
my father, No. 9 was primarily
relied upon to make
complex health care decisions,
advocate on behalf
of my father, initiate difficult
conversations and get
hospice on board.
I often wondered how
other families managed
these enormous challenges
if nobody worked in
healthcare. Consequently,
after my father died in
hospice, I was inspired to
pursue a doctorate degree
in Occupational Therapy
at St. Catherine University
and establish Heart2Heart
Coaching & Consulting
(H2H).
H2H inspires adults of
all ages to live their “best
life”. Whether it be the
older adults or the adult
children who are in need
of guidance, H2H can help
you to examine the emotional
patterns that determine
daily routines and
habits and make changes
that can lead to improved
quality of life.
Other key components
provided by H2H include
making sure the home
environment is safe, education
for informed decision
making, managing
changing family dynamics
and preparing for medical
emergencies in advance.
Why not try to reduce the
stress that comes with the
inevitable? Our current
health care system is set
up to help people after a
crisis or medical decline,
instead of before. Why not
join H2H in a proactive
approach to aging? Why
not contribute to the narrative
so the ending of your
story can be a more peaceful
and tranquil one? H2H
is there at any point in the
process but the earlier we
get started, the bigger the
impact on how gracefully
we age, giving us more options
of where and how we
do it.
Ayres Estate Services
assists clients in the
hard task of dispersing
Ann and Doris Ayres established
Ayres Estate Services
in 2010 as a complement to
their core businesses, art
consultation and interior
design, respectively. They
work with their clients to sell
with good return on varied
and desirable items that are
no longer useful to them.
An organizer we know
was working with a client
selling a three-story Victorian
Graystone in Lincoln
Park. Being travelers
and collectors, the owners
had filled their large house
with period pieces and artifacts
from exotic cultures.
The organizer called us in
to help achieve a cleaner,
more contemporary feel
to the many expansive
rooms.
Our first step was to
contact a design shop owner
who specializes in artistic
and unusual decorative
items. We also brought in
an antiques dealer who
specializes in late 19th
century carved furniture
and accessories. Finally,
we invited a specialist in
mid-century and primitive
styles who bought several
African masks and native
pottery. We have worked
with these resource folks
for years, know what they
like to buy, and invite them
to make house calls for
purchases. They depend
on us for our expertise in
recognizing great stuff as
much as we depend on
them to buy from our clients.
One of the interesting
collections in this project
was a large number of
American pottery from the
1930s through the 1960s.
Buyers like groups of
things — variations on a
theme. All 75 pieces in this
collection were sold to one
person after some friendly
negotiation.
When the property was
listed there were small uncommitted
pieces left over.
We boxed them up, and
took them to a shop that
admittedly pays bare minimum.
The client agreed:
a little cash is better than
none at all.
We were able to help this
client in specific ways. We
brought to the client our
insiders’ access to businesspeople
who are serious
about enhancing their
stores and shops. Because
the pieces for sale included
a variety of items, we had
the resources to include
specialty buyers. Knowing
the appeal of the lots
for sale, we were able to
coax the best return from
each purchase. Even the
leftovers didn’t become
landfill but sold to please
someone for a few more
dollars.
The Ayres sisters, Ann and
Doris, have been helping
clients to disperse their
unwanted items for years
with their vast network of
collectors, antiques dealers,
special consignment
venues, auction houses and
house sale specialists. Give
them a call if you think you
have a client who needs
their assistance. They are
connected, know people who
know people, are endlessly
resourceful with suggestions,
and effective sales people
in their own right with their
sphere of buyer. Ann and
Doris like to say “We put our
clients’ valuables in the right
hands for more money.”
Bratschi helps
transform your home
for living in place
“Living in Place” is the
trend of adapting your
home as you age. Regardless
of whether your home
is 10 years old or 100 years
old, chances are it was
built for the now and not
the future.
The longer you live in a
house, the more it becomes
home. A recent survey by
Houzz found that more
than half of homeowners
60 and older plan to stay in
their home indefinitely.
HomeAdvisor also recently
released its “Aging
in Place Survey Report,”
which reveals that it’s not
just the aging homeowners
making lifestyle renovations
– the trend is also
filtering down to futurethinking
homeowners who
are purchasing aging-inplace-ready
homes or making
the renovations earlier
in the aging process.
Home remodelers are
seeing huge growth in
renovations with a specific
focus: making kitchens
and bathrooms more accessible
to give your house
long-term livability. About
76 percent of living-inplace
projects include adding
grab bars. Typically
added to bathroom shower/tub
and toilet areas, they
are equally important in
other places such as bedrooms
or near stepped entryways
(for example from
the attached garage into
the house) to assist in stabilization
or standing up.
Here are some other examples
of bathroom and
kitchen renovations that
are helpful for “Living in
Place”:
• Multiple light sources to
help reduce glare and
shadows.
• Slip-resistant flooring
material, including flat,
non-slip bottoms in the
bathtub.
• Showerheads on a slide
bar to easily adjust the
height of the spray depending
on the user’s
needs and assist in
cleaning.
• Showers and faucets controlled
by levers, rather
than knobs.
• Showers with pressurebalanced
or thermostatic
controls to reduce the
risk of burns.
• Comfort-height toilets
(which are seventeen to
nineteen inches off the
ground) to make sitting
and standing easier.
• Bathroom and kitchen
faucets featuring touchand
hands-free activation.
• Seats in the shower - often
associated with luxury
bathrooms!
• Install pull-out drawers
in kitchen and bathroom
cabinets.
• A kitchen sink that is
not too deep, to reduce
stress on the back from
over-bending.
• Doorknobs and cabinet
knobs changed to leverstyle
handles that are
easier to open with limited
dexterity (or even
a bag of groceries or a
child in tow).
• Smart devices/voice activated
devices including:
thermostats, security
systems, lights, fire protection,
shades/blinds,
locks, etc.
The good news is the
same design features that
make a home comfortable
for older people also work
for younger families. The
potential challenge is that
functionality sometimes
comes with a more commercial
or industrial look.
However, as the trend continues,
homeowners will
have an increasing amount
of options for designs that
are safe with functionality,
and also attractive.
Chestnut Square at the Glen
brothers share a remarkable bond
For eight decades, brothers Don and
Bob Klein have been a dynamic duo.
Growing up on Chicago’s north side, they
shared the same group of friends, and as
adults, the two worked together at the
same bank where Don served as president
and Bob was vice president and treasurer.
It should come as no surprise, then,
that they would eventually end up at the
same senior living community. “Moving to
Chestnut Square was one of the best decisions
my wife and I ever made,” Don said.
“Mary Jane and I were always telling Bob
how much he would enjoy living here.”
When Bob’s wife, Shirley, passed away
in 2013, he began touring different retirement
communities and realized that
Chestnut Square was the perfect fit for
him as well. He moved in soon after.
Fellow residents quickly embraced the
siblings and their unique personalities.
As both brothers will point out, Don is
the more social one and loves organizing
clubs and activities — especially when
sports are the focus. Some of the staff
affectionately call him “The Commissioner,”
and he has served as Chair of the
community’s resident council.
Bob, on the other hand, is the more adventurous
type. He has travelled all over
the world exploring different cultures,
and celebrated his 88th birthday by jumping
out of an airplane.
“I saw George Bush, Sr. skydiving on
TV, so I thought, why couldn’t I?” Bob
said. “My granddaughter joined me on
the jump and it was a real thrill!”
When asked to describe her husband
and brother-in-law, Mary Jane perhaps
said it best. “Don and Bob bring out the
best in each other and everyone around
them. I’ve never known two finer men.”
