AN INTERVIEW WITH WILL WHITEEarlier in the month, we sat down with William Whitefrom our Belfast office to get an insight into hisrole as a Principle Environmental & Sustainabilityengineer here at IN2. If you haven’t yet had a chanceto view the video online here’s what he had to say…IntroductionHi, I’m Will and I’m a Principal Sustainability Engineer.Why did you choose the career path you did?I chose the career path that I did because I was interested in science andtechnology, which led me to engineering, which kind of led me to focuson energy performance which followed on to Mechanical and ElectricalEngineering. I became interested in Environmental performance, whichthen took me down the Energy and Sustainability road.What current projects are you working on?I work on a lot of projects and one of the current projects is a large residentialscheme of over 700 units in London where we’ve looked at changing theenergy centre for them.Another current project that we are working on is a large new officedevelopment in Belfast of around 12,000 sqm. I can’t say any more than thatat the minute as it hasn’t gone into planning but it will be a transformationalproject for the Belfast office.What challenging projects have you worked on?One of the most challenging projects I’ve worked on was an existingbuilding in Northern Ireland, I can’t be too specific, but it had quite difficultoperational issues and they were facing really high temperatures. As anoccupied building during office hours they were getting temperatures ofover 30-34 degrees. So we had to come up with solutions to make it morecomfortable for these employees.Another challenging project we’ve worked on is reviewing the energyuse for large hospital sites. One of the hospital sites we looked at has acombined floor area over 2 million square feet and energy bills of over £6million a year. So we’ve had the dive into the detail of their energy billsand work out where all of the energy is used, and then use that to makerecommendations as to what plant they should put in. So we’re doing a bigCHP study at the minute.IN THE LOOP23
What are the big challenges for the industry in 2020?The biggest challenge I think for 2020 and going forward is how we designbuildings to be zero carbon and future proof for zero carbon, and also how thegrid decarbonises. So I think engineers are going to be very busy for the next30 years given that it’s now a government requirement, to get zero carbon.Want more?Visit us at in2.ieor on social forweekly updatesWhat things do you enjoy outside of work?Outside of work I keep busy. I do a lot of cycling, I watch a lot of rugby, I playa small bit of rugby not contact, tag rugby. You can Google that and see whatthat is. Generally just exploring the scenery that we have on our doorstep athome.
