We have lost even this twilight.
No one saw us this evening hand in hand
while the blue night dropped on the world.
I have seen from my window
the fiesta of sunset in the distant mountain tops.
Sometimes a piece of sun
burned like a coin in my hand.
I remembered you in that sadness of mine that you know.
Artist’s Statement
White furniture of a wood-like quality is carefully placed in a clean spacious house.
The scene is complemented by an extended view of a lawn just through the door while
the sky outside bathes in an orange pastel of a setting sun. This is your home sweet home.
It has everything. Everything but people. Ever since my daughter was born, I have been
forever musing about death. Why are paper offerings, things we can’t bring with us to
death, crafted to signify anything and everything we consider shiny and golden? Housing
has already become a speculative market for the living, yet why do our desires still refuse
to cease in the afterlife?
So I began taking pictures of paper offerings. In Taiwan, I came upon a paper house. It had
everything a person would need, as if burning it to ashes would allow the dead to move in
and have a life just like ours, as if death had never happened. What exits from the windows
is not light but the ambiance; it’s not the setting sun but the emptiness of wooden colours.
You push the window open and feel death under your fingertips. You peek inside the paper
house and see images of yourself overlapping one another – you sleep, you wash, you
dress, and you slowly drink a glass of water in the living room. It’s all part of your daily life –
cold and warm, life and death. Are you here or there? Where are you exactly?
“I remembered you in that sadness of mine that you know.”
You then witness a dream, or you might already be in one.
Marshall McLauhan 認 為 「 媒 體 即 訊 息 (medium is the message)」 為 真 , 那 麼 , 陳 啟
(Roland
子 , 影 像 ( 更 多 是 指 觀 眾 的 想 像 ) 與 現 實 兩 者 實 際 上 是 互 不 相 干 的 元 素 ,。 外 觀 上 的 親 近 ;
The Narrative Structure of a Sugar-coated Poison-like Image
Text: Eddie Cheung Wai Sum
Michael Chan, also known as M.C., has a solo exhibition titled “T Here” that showcases
his latest photographic works, videos and installations. The entire series of works is rooted
in photography. Gazing at the hazy, seemingly unfocused or overexposed images, you
may faintly sense that the images depict indoor scenes. The warm colour scheme evokes
a sense of dreaminess and gentleness. Yet after careful observation you can easily discern
that these indoor scenes are actually portraits of models. All is apparent by peering inside
the photos’ frames.
structure, to record the imagination inspired by “artificial” space as a material vessel and
to offer his contemplation on the given theme. What is unique here is that the artist’s
motif varies slightly from large-scale issues like “Hong Kong” or identity. The effect
is instead one of a gradual, personalised touch from the artist himself followed by a
nurturing of the creative concept from life to death. The theme is therefore metaphysical
and maternal. From the artist’s statement, we understand that M.C. has fixated on the
theme of life and death following the birth of his daughter. His starting point is direct and
frank. He associates the custom of burning paper offerings with life and death. He finds
M.C.’s previous photographic works offer the best proof of his profound power of
observation and sensitivity to uncovering the people and objects of urban architecture.
His works such as “Full & Emptiness”, “All that is solid melts into air” and “Elite” are
inspired by the daily experiences of the general public. M.C. makes use of a variety of
settings, ranging from urban landscapes to Disneyland to even school. Then, drawing
upon techniques like slowing the shutter speed and sharply contrasting light with shade,
he crafts a dramatic composition that presents people as comparable to billowing smoke.
While these works do not rely on artfully-conceived angles, they still convey the emptiness
startlingly real paper houses that resemble actual ones and uses funeral homes as studio
to produce a rather heart-warming photo series. In gleaning only the messages conveyed
by the images, viewers might not be able to deduce either the messages about life and
death or the narrative elements. If “the medium is the message” holds true as Marshall
McLuhan asserted, the message in M.C.’s creation should not be confined to the frames
of the images. If viewers only take superficial messages from the images, it seems they will
be disappointed. Put more plainly, the meaning of the works cannot be fully expressed in
aesthetic language.
and conflicts felt by people surrounded by urban landscapes and routines. M.C. employs
the use of precise, purposeful visual elements to render these sentiments. Through his
lens, viewers can appreciate his use of photographic skill to develop visual wonders, which
reveal a surreal world of mystery and strangeness, and even involve a grand narrative of
Hong Kong’s urban landscape or phenomena. These signature touches notwithstanding,
the visual strategy adopted in “T Here” departs from his previous works.
Therefore, this series from M.C. is actually created in a roundabout way. The work
does not include strong visual spectacles as before or theatrical elements that usually
feature in photographic techniques. Instead, it is more like a life sketch that doesn’t
use obvious visual language as a gimmick. In his photography, what is normal becomes
marginalised. Without a doubt, the visual effects of this series are delicately arranged.
The artist takes photos by peep sight angle, handling the photos with high brightness
In fact, the new works being showcased descend from the artist’s underlying creative
motif: architecture. Specifically, M.C. manipulates photography, a medium with a narrative
and de-territorialising the images through photography. He changes the nature of the
captured objects and transforms the images to psychedelic illusions of an idealised home.
29
However, there is more to this informative and visual expression. It also involves related
texts. For example, he quotes Pablo Neruda’s poem “Clenched Soul” for the layout
and context, using lighting to create atmosphere. He also uses settings to strengthen
and guide viewers to perceive the actual “indoor” landscape they are viewing, enabling
them to substitute into the world of image. As Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida noted,
these kinds of scenic pictures help foster in viewers’ minds a ‘habitable’ image. Viewers
imagine they are in an ideal home and then realise that the captured image is actually
only a paper house combined with texts. In their mind, images (mostly referring to
viewers’ imaginations) and reality indeed exist independently of each other. Their similar
appearances and distinctive conceptions of death, flitting between image and reality,
create distant yet intimate contrast. This phenomenon can best be described as the
“sugar-coated poison” of the work: life and death are different qualities of the same thing
and are not likely to part ways.
In our world teeming with visualisation, the T Here series may seem plain and lack a
visuality powered by photographic techniques. In fact, this series has considerable
potential and represents a great experiment for the artist. First, the work emphasises
surrounding relationships, namely the relation between reality and image. It discards
the food-additive-like, intuitive feeling and tends to lead viewers to think beyond their
perceptions. Second, different from M.C.’s past photographic works in which value
judgments were cloaked, this series bolsters “scriptability” in that it create more leeway
for the audience to interpret the content of the work.
