Lowtheris founder and director of Community Arts Tokyo, assisting church plantingthrough the arts. Roger is also director of faith and art at Grace City ChurchTokyo and coordinator for the MAKE Collective, a global network of missionaryartists. He has been serving with Mission to the World in Japan since 2005.Roger received degrees from The Juilliard School and Columbia University andis currently studying at Reformed Theological Seminary. He lives in downtownTokyo with his wife Abi and four boys.
Open-Mic Invites CreativityArts Advocate UpdateOur church operates near an international universityin a western suburb of Jakarta, Indonesia. In thebasement of a high-rise condominium directly acrossthe street, the student ministry team has set up anenvironment for students to study and hang out inbetween their classes. The “Study Bunker” isavailable throughout the week but isn’t just forstudying. It’s also a gathering place for students tocome and take a break from their intense studyroutine, whether it is conversations with oneanother, enjoying a games night, or watching videos,either a movie or whatever they find on YouTube.Our creative artsministry partnered withour students team toco-host an open-micnight for anyoneinterested and familiarwith the study bunker.The word got out to those involved inviting students,friends, and members from our church to submitperformances to share during the evening.There were 7 acts that made up the evening’sprogram on Saturday, November 9, 2019. Theprogram included covers of worship songs alongwith traditional contemporary songs from Indonesiathat students wanted to share. One friend of theministry is an Indonesian songwriter and rap artist.Two students share a traditional Dayak welcomedance for everyone gathered for the evening. Fromthe 20 or so people who attended, there was aboisterous and livelyatmosphere throughoutthe evening. Refreshmentswere available andplenty of opportunity tointeract with theperformers during thetwo intermissions.Photos were taken andshared. New appreciation for the talents amongthe students and the heart behind what they hadto share prompted deeper conversations. Theseopen-mic cooperative events are expected tocontinue in the months to come. They areproviding alternative atmospheres for the studybunker that will invite other students to takeadvantage of the space and build relationshipswith their peers. The goal of the student ministryis to prompt discipleship relationships to formamong those who get involved in what the studybunker has to offer.March 2020Robert C.
