FYI NO GRAND LAKES ELECTRONICS
RECYCLING DRIVE THIS APRIL
Neighbors, please note that this year there will not be a Grand Lakes electronics
recycling drive coinciding with the spring garage sales. Over the past three springs,
the number of pounds of electronics collected at the event has declined, likely due
to the success of past drives, the shrinking size of electronics and the introduction
of the Simple Recycling service to our neighborhood. At the same time, the cost of
the event is increasing due to domestic processing of materials. These two factors
combined have prompted movement toward an every-other-year approach.
In the meantime, if you have any electronics you need to recycle, we recommend
Best Buy and the Fort Bend Recycling Center (1200 Blume Road, Rosenberg, TX
77471). Both have web pages listing what they accept and any associated fees.
For those interested, here is a graph depicting statistics for the last three years. The
2020 projected cost estimate is based on collecting the same poundage as last year.
NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM
WHY DO I
NEED FLOOD
INSURANCE?
As written in the February 2020 edition of Grand Lakes,
the “Official Newsletter of Grand Lakes” (p.5), “The major
responsibilities of the Association [GLCA] are to protect the
investment and enhance the value of the property owned by
its members, the homeowners.” We are approaching another
Rainy Season (recall the floods of Tax Day 2016 and Memorial
Day 2017 occurred prior to the onset of Hurricane Season
on June 1 st ), so I write to express my continued concern
for flooding in our subdivision and to urge our Grand Lakes
Community Association (GLCA) to act in every way possible to
mitigate this single greatest threat to our property values.
On October 9, 2017, the first meeting of the GLCA to be held
following Hurricane Harvey, David Corbin, PE, of Costello,
Inc. civil engineering, reported on behalf of Grand Lakes
Municipal Utility District (MUD) No. 4 and the Water Control
and Improvement District (WCID) the following estimate of
homes flooded (

Business Journal www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2019/08/27/texas-sellers-must-disclosepropertys-flood-risk.html,
however requires owners to disclose when selling that their parcel is
located within the flood pool of the reservoir. Many homeowners share concerns that this new
law will make it difficult to sell their property.
As the Community Impact article points out (p. 26 column 3 top) the USACE “has no plan to
change the operation of the reservoirs,” i.e., closing the dam gates to impound water.
Regardless of this or court ruling or future decisions on damages to be awarded plaintiffs, the
threat of flooding to a large portion of Grand lakes will remain. I call upon the GLCA Board to
ignore the reality of this situation no longer. I believe it is incumbent on the Board to take an
active role in informing the GL residents of the risk and the steps available to mitigate it.
Chief among these steps is for homeowners and renters alike to obtain coverage via the
National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) www.floodsmart.gov/. This is a link to information fact
sheets about the http://bit.ly/2IsT0sl-FEMAFactSheet. Also, a brochure outlining the “Benefits
of Flood Insurance versus Disaster Relief,” https://www.fema.gov/media-library-data/20130726-
conjunction with local government agencies to set up community outreach project to get all of
Grand Lakes acquainted with the NFIP and what else is being done to ensure the “health, safety
and welfare of the residents and Owners” from this threat. (Article written by Jonathan Jee a
GRAND LAKES BUSINESS
OWNER SPOTLIGHT
Same as many of my Grand Lakes neighbors,
the oil and gas industry brought me here
to this beautiful community more than 12
years ago. I was relocated from Mexico City
in 2009. At the time, my wife Leticia and I
decided to get a fresh start and move away
from our home, with illusions and dreams.
Fortunately, life was generous enough to
give us two wonderful kids named Maria and
Daniel, great friends and a great business.
Jobs may come to an end, but we try again
and they turn into a new adventure/project. After many years of working for Corporate America,
Leticia and I decided to start our own company, so we launched a highly convenient mobile car
wash service. We noticed that people in Katy wanted to spend more time with their families
but can’t because they’re too busy. There are some necessities to take care of like cleaning our
cars, but unfortunately, time is limited. Available car washes around the area take time out of
our day to get there, plus the waiting time to get our car cleaned, especially on Sunday. We
have an advantage because we come directly to you. We wash your car in your driveway, at
your office, etc. Pretty convenient isn’t it? We introduced a new way to wash cars with our small,
independent and fully equipped vehicles. We are able to wash 1-50 cars in the same location
using only 3 gallons of water, very eco-friendly.
Of course, opening a business is not easy. In fact,
it is extremely complicated and 50% of new small
businesses shut down before finishing their first
year of operating. Hard work and a positive mind
are necessary all the time even though the results
may not be as positive. My home is located in
phase three which got flooded during Hurricane
Harvey. It was dark time for us not only because the
business was seriously affected, we lost customers,
employees, equipment, but also, our home was
flooded. We were evacuated and stayed with two
great friends for two months before returning
home. For many months, we stayed upstairs while
rebuilding our home step by step. One of the main
reasons we love the Grand Lakes community is
because of the solidarity that we received from the
entire neighborhood and volunteers, there will
always be a special place for them in our hearts!
In the car wash industry, we say that after a storm
comes the shiny sun. After many terrible months,
we restored our business, increased the number
of customers and daily operations. Our customers
recognized our service and we were named “The
Best Car Wash in Katy in 2019” by the Katy Times.
We are very thankful and proud of that. Last year we
decided to expand the line of cleaning services. We
incorporated all the services that all homeowners
normally use with multiple providers, so we are
not only able to clean your car but also your house,
your carpets, your windows, pest control, power
wash, gardening and even groom your pet(s). We
offer multiple services under one roof with one
single point of contact.
We love our community so much. We would love
to hear more about other local business owners.
The iWRITE Organization will host Creative Writing & Illustration Summer
Camps around the Houston area, allowing young writers to bring their
stories to life! iWRITE was founded ten years ago by children’s author,
young writers can learn straight from the pros!
turn ideas into a story, how illustrators bring characters to life through
art, fun editing techniques and even how to get your work published.
APRIL 18TH-19TH
The world-famous CAF B-17 Flying Fortress Texas Raiders will be
headlining the 18 th annual Warbird Weekend April 18 th -19 th at the West
Houston Airport in Houston, TX. The B-17 Texas Raiders, along with the
For the past 18 years, Warbird Weekend has emerged as one of the most
entertaining annual World War II and 1940s themed events in Houston.
It is a can’t-miss experience for anyone who enjoys nostalgia, historic
aircraft and military vehicles and antique cars. Families will also enjoy reenactors
vehicles and an anti-aircraft gun mount from the Battleship Texas. Local
the Greatest Generation and educate all ages about the WWII experience
and the technology of aviation.
The admission fee is $20 per car at the gate. Proceeds from the event
help fund facility operations and the restoration and operation of the
Houston Wing aircraft. Join us on Facebook at CAF-Houston Wing or visit
