In total, the minegenerated $160 million in direct and indirect economic benefits in2018. The award remains the nation's most prestigious recognition ofmine safety and has helped foster a strong safety commitment on thepart of U.S. mines.Office Of Surface Mining Reclamation And Enforcement (OSMRE),created in 1977 is a buruea within the United States Department ofInterior responsible for establishing a nationwide program to protectsociety and the environment from the adverse effects of surface coalmining operations, under which OSMRE is charged with balancing thenation's need for continued domestic coal production with protectionof the environment. The reclaimed area covers 854 acres with adjacentsteep red rock hills and low valleys. Use of the land today includeswildlife habitat, shrubs and woody plants. The Kayenta Mine ceasedproduction earlier this year and is currently in reclamation.Another of Peabody's operations, Vermilion Grove was alsorecognized by OSMRE for the successful reclamation of a former 88-acre refuse disposal area. The reclamation work included dewateringof slurry through the use of a filter press during coal production,effective grading and alkaline amendment to the coarse refusematerial and an enhanced soil coverage plan.
